A completely normal teenager, just like every other teen in Homestuck, trust!!🤚

(Note that this drawing was made when I just returned to HS and haven't yet seen some of the amazing variations of their designs here on Tumblr, so my design for Dave will probably be changed, idk)

She lived with her Big Sister, they were Strider's neighbors from a floor down

They lived in hard financial conditions, her Sister overworked herself to provide for them both and was almost never home to look after Cindy, which forced Cindy to fend for herself most of the time when she was little

She met Dave on the roof once, the meeting involved spying on his Bro and her Sister talking about some secret Older Sibling Stuff or something. It looked like her Sister was crying? Overall a pretty awkward first meeting

Cindy felt guilty often about their situation for some reason, so she helped with whatever she could in the house

But her relationship with her Sister was.. not ideal, it was very strained and painful for both of them, Cindy felt hurt from her Sister not being around much, even if she understood why that was

Even so, she still felt cared for and appreciated her Sister and her sacrifices

Cindy was bullied in school, I know, shocker, she was considered weird, dirty, ugly, scary, and was avoided most of the time. Some kids called her "Dead-Eyed Cindy", because of how her eyes resemble the ones of a dead fish, but she reclaimed that nickname for herself, because she thinks it makes her sound badass. She didn't know what friendship was supposed to be like, and convinced herself she was better off without anyone, but she desperately wanted to have real friends she could trust one day

She was very stiff emotionally when she first started chatting with Dave, but with time became more sincere and open thanks to also getting to know Rose, Jade, and John

She and Dave are both weird dead thing collectors, but Cindy prefers to collect animal bones and skulls. Their music preferences don't match like. In any form, but Cynthia greatly enjoys Dave's mixes and tunes, and always encouraged him to do more

She adores gothic rock, punk rock, heavy metal, screamo and any other "edgy" music genre you can think of

Of course she didn't have money to go to concerts and buy merch of her favorite bands, so all the posters in her room were home printed

She's all about that messy grungy look. Her hair? Intentually cut like that by herself. Smeared makeup? Her favorite style. Her clothes? Ripped and modified by herself. She wanted to ward off normies away from her this way, not caring about what other people think of her, and also just because she likes the style

She didn't like Rose's overly posh way of wording things at first(so pretentious), but they quickly clicked over shared interests in goth culture and the paranormal unknown, Cindy cares about her greatly and comforted her through the hardships Rose had to endure

Cindy didn't know what to think of Jade's strangeness and, quite frankly, didn't like her vibes at first, but warmed up to her greatly with time and really sympathized with her, Cindy really believes Jade deserves so much better, and is determined to let her know they care

John was very intimidated by Cindy at first, and Cindy assumed he just didn't like her, so she acted more coldly towards him, and it continued to be like that for a pretty awkwardly long time, but of course his dorkiness hooked her up quick, as it did his other friends, and they slowly but surely became very close; Cynthia became very protective of Egbert fast

Cindy always tries to put in work into her friendships, as she naturally doesn't want to be alone again, but also because she doesn't want her friends to feel left out or ignored, cause she knows what it's like

Which also seems like overcompensation, as she feels like she's not the best person to be around, so she tries to be helpful, even when she no longer has any mental resources for that

She had no clue about what kind of game Sburb even was, and she definitely didn't have time to ask when meteors suddenly started raining from the sky

No fucking way was she going to die if she could help it, so she fought for her and her friends' lives with all she had

How was she able to godtier and whatnot without entering the game? Beats me, you're asking as if I should know and write some good explanation for it and make it make sense🙄🙄💅 I just wanna play touoys, hope you understand💓

Cindy started questioning her identity along the way of their adventures on the meteor, and started using she/they/him pronouns

If I had to write about her relationships with all of the trolls we'd be here all day, so let me just point out the most relevant things here <3

Gamzee had a pitch crush on her, and they entertained the idea for a while, but she quickly recoiled from that when Gamzee, uh, started doing Stuff. She actively maintains friendships with Aradia, Kanaya, and Tavros, and is on good terms with Terezi, Sollux, and Nepeta. It's a bit more complicated with the others, though.. Their relationship with Karkat was very murky and tense at first, she wasn't having his bullshit, but he grew on them with time, when Cindy realized they both have similar goals and wants. She can't tolerate Eridan's bullshit and mostly avoids him, doesn't like Equius for his attitude and hates him for what he did to Aradia, Feferi.. well, they just can't find a common ground, especially because Feferi's royalty, and Cindy holds no respect for them. And Vriska.. he justifiably doesn't like her, at all, but is somewhat sympathetic of her issues.

She is a Page of Blood, and their journey of self-realization had to teach him that she can't win and please them all, that they can be their true self around her friends, and that he can also depend on others for help when she needs it

She learned to make chains from blood, his or otherwise, and use them in battle, and at their highest potential she can bind someone's body to another's and adjust what it means according to situation.

You're badly injured and there's no one else to help in sight? She can bind your body to hers and share their life essence with you, practically making it so you both share an internal system, and if she's healthy enough, then you'll be too in a second

He can drain someone's blood and give it to another if they need it, she can solidify blood inside someone's veins to make it hard to move

She can make a dying person's heart beat via a blood bind, but it's very draining for her and can be quite deadly if done hastily and improperly, and he can't do it when a body already went cold, at least they didn't learn how to, maybe with enough conviction and training she could one day🤔

Maybe with time she found even more uses and possibilities for her chains

She's a great motivator, especially if it's his friends that need morale, they always have their friends' backs

She's not a fan of being a leader, but can be if the situation calls for it

Overall, Cynthia is a person with an intimidating exterior, and warm and genuine interior!🥹

You picked the razor up, "Let me".

You shaved her thin, weak hair, occasionally kissing her cheeks to wipe away her tears. Once you were done she stared at the mirror, as if in a trance.

You sighed and raised the razor to your head, proceeding to shave off your hair as well.

Elesa is a bit of people pleaser (her job definition) and a huge fan of diverse opinions and ideals! However, she is also affected by the constraint TRUTH puts on her, and the commotion/confusion IDEALS causes. TRUTH, for her, is to be attained and it connects her to others, while IDEALS are born from her connection to others, and she attains self-discovery through the clash of ideals.

I think, this leads her to enjoy the soft, nurturing side of IDEALS through Ingo who represents IDEALS, and takes time to hear out new ideals while holding onto his own and reinventing them if necessary. Elesa also is inspired by Emmet’s TRUTH, where Emmet is TRUE to his own self, to his own inner voice, and Emmet thrives by making worthy IDEALS into reality, which makes him a happy place to confide in.

Elesa can confide in Ingo when the constant clash of IDEALS overwhelms her, and Ingo offers a calm approach, while hearing her out and being a great listener. Elesa can freely tell Ingo she is only there to rant, and Ingo is fully on board.

Elesa can stay her ground when the expectations are too much and clashes with her own TRUTH, and she can speak with Emmet for that confidence boost. Emmet believes some people are perfect the way they are, and Elesa is one of them. Emmet’s confidence helps Elesa to set boundaries. Also, Emmet adores helping Elesa achieve her dreams, however wild they can be. Elesa can inspire Emmet and recruit his help in her projects with right amount of confidence, excitement and passion! Alright, the rest of the character study was related to my Trans Submas headcanons and childhood Submas headcanons, so I will end this study here! BUT… *pulls a cardboard and pats on Emmet and Elesa’s parallels with their ambitions, competitiveness, confidence and self-discovery themes, nosiness and love for juicy info* THEY MAKE SUCH AN INRETESTING AND CUTE COMBINATION.

oh wow, she really blew up! i don't have that much information about her, i haven't come up with a lot beyond a pretty loose backstory. she doesn't even have a name lmao. i can change that rn (spins wheel) let's call her adhara

the idea i had was that she crashed on pokemon earth and made friends with the locals who were helping her rebuild her ship, but like all of us she fell in love with the people and the world and those wonderful creatures we call pokemon so she decided to stay and make her own life there.

i always like to think of gym leaders as community leaders, like they're generally one of the most looked-to and respected people/trainers in their local area? like lenore in black/white is iirc a museum curator and elesa is a model, so i like thinking that adhara became a pillar of the community while she was rebuilding her ship. she's a philosopher and a big advocate of like, cleaning up litter and building schools and libraries. i'm not sure what she does now other than vibe. maybe she's a teacher!

i'd have to think more about her team but i don't imagine she's terribly competitive, very first-two gym leaders energy. she just likes to be friends with pokemon she's not out here stacking her team with monsters like someone like cynthia.

Cincinnati Was Enchanted By The Weird & Mysterious Spell Of The Ouija Board

Every so often, a compulsion to contact spirits from beyond the grave possesses Cincinnati. For a time, séances were as common as church festivals here and the mainline churches fretted that Spiritualist cults would siphon away congregants. Card readers and crystal-ball gazers have occupied veiled storefronts as long as our city has had storefronts. From 1890 to 1920, the preeminent supernatural fad in Cincinnati was the Ouija board.

Although homemade “talking boards” had been employed in Spiritualist practice for many years, commercially produced Ouija boards did not became widely available until the 1890s.

From its first introduction, Queen City media tut-tutted about the talking board craze, predicting only two possible outcomes for participants: insanity or damnation. The Catholic Telegraph [19 August 1920] claimed both:

“‘Ouija’ is sending them to St. Elizabeth, the national hospital for the insane, by the score. At the Washington Asylum hospital, fifteen devotees of the spook board are now being watched by the alienists. ‘If Washington residents continue to ‘monkey’ with occult Ouija,’ said one of the physicians, ‘we will have to have an addition to the local staff.’ Do not imagine that manipulation of the Ouija board is only a harmless method of recreation. It is playing with fire—Hell fire.”

One of the first Ouija incidents recorded by the local media seemed to bear out at least the insanity option. The Cincinnati Enquirer [9 May 1892] spotlighted Mr. & Mrs. John Chapman from Liberty, Indiana and their outrageous, Ouija-inspired, misbehavior. Alarmed by screams and pounding noises, neighbors discovered the Chapmans carving circles on the walls and floors of their house, using hedge knives and scythes, while threatening to kill their own children and various relatives. They had chopped all their carpets to ribbons and smashed most of their furniture.

“Mrs. Chapman’s great delusion is that she wants to make every body a Mason. She claims Horace Greeley ordered her to do so and the Ouija board also tells her too. It is this Ouija fad that has caused the crazed condition of Mr. and Mrs. Chapman. Hundreds of these boards have been sold in this county and it will not be strange if there are other cases of insanity from its use to be reported from this city soon.”

A couple of years later, a whole community just outside Harrison, Ohio went on a treasure-hunting rampage, all because of a Ouija board. One evening, according to the Enquirer [23 February 1894] an apparently persuasive “prominent gentleman” of the area consulted his brand-new Ouija board and learned that substantial treasure was buried in Southgate, Indiana, just north of St. Leon.

“So impressed was he by the answer that he called a mass meeting of the citizens of that hamlet to organize an expedition to go to Southgate and endeavor to find the precious stuff. They started about three days ago, 50 anxious men forming the company, and from a report received here this morning, they have dug over a field covering seven acres, but without success.”

The Ouija craze produced celebrities and they visited Cincinnati. Among the most famous was Pearl Lenore Curran, who stopped by Cincinnati’s Grand Hotel, bringing in tow a spectral visitor named Patience Worth who claimed – through Ouija sessions – to have lived in England from 1649-1694. Dutifully transcribed by Pearl’s husband, John H. Curran, Patience Worth transmitted hundreds of poems, seven novels, some short stories and even a couple of plays via an apparently frenetic planchette. Cincinnati Post reporter Cynthia Grey published [13 November 1915] a “conversation” with the spirit of Patience Worth:

“Mrs. Curran is young and good-looking. There was nothing mysterious about her or the way she ‘talked’ with ‘Patience.’ She simply laid the Ouija board across our knees and told me to put my fingers on the pointer with hers. I felt a thrill when the pointer began to move swiftly from letter to letter.”

The Ouija fad really took off in 1920, apparently because many people wanted to contact relatives or friends who had died during World War I or during the 1918-19 “Spanish Flu” pandemic. Regardless of psychic potential, young people discovered that the Ouija board gave them an excuse to sit knees-to-knees in dimly lit rooms.

Cartoonists had a ball with Ouija-themed gags. Rube Goldberg portrayed people paralyzed with indecision until they consulted the Ouija board about purchasing formal attire or ordering dinner or making a telephone call. Walter Allman’s “Doings of the Duffs,” portrayed a sleepwalking wife frightening her husband by interrupting his Ouija session. Roy Grove’s “The Boys In The Other Car” portrayed a gang of commuters trying to get a Ouija board to tell them who among their fellow passengers was hiding some booze. All of these strips were syndicated by Cincinnati’s E. W. Scripps Company.

Throughout 1917, with the United States entering World War I, Cincinnati Post writer Alfred Segal invited readers to send reports of their Ouija sessions to be printed in his “Village Gossip” column. He ran dozens of reports, most suggesting a quick end to the war, a United States victory and horrible consequences for the German Kaiser. One of his correspondents claimed to have chatted with Abraham Lincoln.

Foremost among Ouija’s detractors, surprisingly, were the Spiritualist churches. After a century trying to gain respectability for their beliefs, the thought that their religion should be reduced to a parlor game was infuriating. The Enquirer [24 June 1920] reported high dudgeon at a Spiritualist convention:

“Inference that the Ouija board is controlled by spirits was resented by the delegates. Discussion today developed strong possibilities of a nation-wide movement to put down what one speaker referred to as a ‘slander against our religion’ for which the Ouija board was held responsible.”

It may have been too little, too late. The Cincinnati Post [7 August 1920] quoted eminent authorities assured that the Ouija board and similar activities were heading toward the dustbin of history:

“The popularity of the Ouija board and other forms of spiritualism is waning. Institutions for the feeble-minded have fewer ‘spook’ patients and fewer books on occult subjects are being circulated by libraries.”

If the Ouija board had anything to say about that, it went unrecorded.

The Post-Scratch Cynthia knew that she would not survive the rebellion against The Condesce, but he wanted his potential sibling to live and maybe save what they have already lost, so they begged Dave for one last favor, to first send her blood binding chains through time to Jade with the instructions to bind whoever had Cynthia's blood in the future to wherever it would guarantee their survival

It was a suicide mission, as Cynthia wanted his sibling to Live, so along with her blood, she wanted to send her heart

Dave was vehemently against the idea, but he knew he Had to do this, for his friend... It was the least he could do in that situation

So through time and space Cynthia's chains went, finding Cinthra and binding them to Derse, increasing their chances of godtiering and surviving, and consequently to their residence in the real world, a.k.a. under the Strider's apartment

A.k.a. the ocean now

Why? Ask Jade, not me, she found that to be important, probably through her foreseeing powers or something🤷

The first thing Cinthra remembered seeing was complete darkness, they were very young so of course they were scared, and tried to find someone, or something, but all they saw was dark purple for miles as they flew up and up and up, until they finally reached the surface, only to find the land of Derse to be even scarier, and hostile because of her yellow pajamas?, so she hid back into the void

But not for long, as they became less scared and more curious about the world they were in, so they sneakily flew through the kingdom, searching, watching, observing, out of sight

Some kind residents of Derse found them and taught them how to talk, write and socialize, but ultimately Dersian culture was different from human, so they were still unsocialized to humans, and they pretty much didn't know what humans even Were as she hadn't seen any around yet, they only heard about them from Dersians

Somewhere around 13 they started phasing out from their dream self, manifesting in an unfamiliar flooded city, with a chain attached to their ankle not unlike their dream self, but with it going into the depths of the ocean somewhere far away

It was very scary and unfamiliar for them

They felt... weird in that state, not quite there, as usual, but with a constant tug in their heart, at least on Derse they felt more light and free, but here... It felt painful to see the ruins of that city for some reason, like they had some sentimental attachment to that place

They explored the ruins underwater and above, seeing most of the valuable cultural valuables rotting and deteriorating, she didn't really understand why that was happening, but it wasn't bringing her hope

Were they destined to wander this flooded area until the end of time..? They didn't know how to return to Derse at will, as they were constantly awake and couldn't get tired in that undead ghostly state

They wandered the seemingly endless waters, they tried to leave a lot of times, but it seemed like them being bound to this place meant she couldn't fly off too far away

To pass the time, and because they were curious, they tried to track where their chain starts and to what it's attached, to maybe think of a way to break free somehow, and... They found a.. strange, tall, structure, with just the top floor still standing..? That made their curiosity skyrocket, and they wondered if there'd be something interesting in there?

There really WAS something interesting here, similar in structure to theirs that they saw in the mirror on Derse once, but completely different from her, was this a so-called human Dersians spoke of?

So they attempted to communicate with him, to try to touch him, but it only resulted in him shivering and looking around briskly... Could he not see or hear them..? That was devastating for Cinthra, she really wanted to get to know this human better, but it looked like it was going to be hard...

This human was weird, at least to Cinthra, but he watched interesting things sometimes and made some really cool things with his hands that made Cint's head spin, they learned so much from observing Dirk's life(probably not the best learning material)

They tried to communicate with him when he still couldn't see or hear them, by making things in his apartment move, switching lights on and off, not knowing it was a stereotypical thing ghosts did in some movies, and it naturally freaked Dirk out, to put it lightly, making him more alert and paranoid, which made Cint stop, as this wasn't their intention. Dirk just honestly thought he has lost his mind completely in this solitude and started hearing and seeing things

What made Dirk aware of them was his awareness of his dream self, and seeing... another dreamer, beside him and Roxy..? And in Prospit's robes..? Calliope never mentioned this to him? What the fuck? Cinthra wasn't awake on Derse at the time, but she Was There, laying on his tower's balcony, chain dangling over the railing and down like freaking Rapunzel's hair

From then on Dirk tried to find ways to communicate with them too, and Cint couldn't be more happier! He briefly considered letting them inhabit one of his robots, but didn't want to risk breaking them. Lil Hal and Cal were naturally off limits too, so he tried to make an interpretator for Cint to communicate through

Which did help for some time, but their communication wasn't the best, as Cinthra had little context of human etiquette and the like, so Hal decided to teach them! Who knows how much intentional misinformation he fed them ^_^ but he did teach her the gist of it, before Dirk banned Hal from teaching them anything for a time being

They then used the modified interpretator in their future adventures to communicate while apart, as it seems Cinthra left a mind link to this device when they inhabitated it for a while in the past

A year later Dirk started hearing them, but still not seeing them, which still was an improvement in their eyes. It was very weird for him to hear another human voice besides his own, even if this voice came echoing through the whole room from a ghost(..?), they talked, but not a lot, because Cinthra genuinely knew little about human interests, but was willing to learn, so they both explored the internet(good idea? no. but what else was there) and watched shows together, Cint pointed out interesting things they found that Dirk could salvage from the ruins, and Dirk talked about his friends and their interesting lives: Cint really wanted to meet them herself one day!

Cinthra genuinely felt awful that she couldn't help Dirk in any meaningful way, they couldn't control the environment enough to make a difference, and it was eating them from the inside when Dirk looked like he'd need help, no matter how many times Dirk told them he was fine on his own

With time and guidance from Dirk on Derse, Cinthra figured out how to semi-materialize in the real world by Waking Up completely, and she pretty much looked like a glowy semi-transparent ghost now irl, which was better than being just a detached voice I guess

They modified their appearance based on trends and fashion they liked online, and Dirk's and Roxy's advice

They also couldn't really understand gender and its importance to people, but she does consider herself queer, they generally use whatever pronouns they feel like, but more or less prefer "they", and they genuinely don't care about what you call them

From that time on Dirk established more boundaries, because seeing them inside his house so often was Different than just hearing them, and they tried their best to abide by them, even if they didn't really understand why at first

Were they friends? Just codependent teens in a bad situation? It was hard to tell, especially because of how bad their communication was sometimes

When Cint learned that Dirk was neglecting himself(they couldn't tell because they only really have context of human beings through Dirk and shitty shows, so Hal told them), they were devastated. Why didn't Dirk look after himself properly? Doesn't he know better?? So they made it their job to remind him to eat, drink water, take breaks and whatever else he was neglecting himself on. Dirk found their "nagging" pretty annoying and meddling, and sometimes wished he could learn to exorcise ghosts just to have some peace: he knows what he's doing and he's fine, surely🙄

But at the end of the day, Dirk thinks that, if not for his friends and Cinthra's company, he would probably not be here anymore.

In his fucking insane plan to save everyone, he had to include getting Cint out of these chains(good call that Jade bound Cinthra to Derse, huh? it's as if she knew💅), which he succeeded in doing, because he's Dirk Motherfucking Strider and he's fucking insanely cool💪‼️

It was very, very, very unusual for Cinthra to actually Be Alive, they had to manually breathe, eat, drink and rest, and they had to learn to walk normally and everything... They understood Dirk's struggle with it all now, but probably not completely... Eating and resting was awesome!!! They became a quick fan!!

And to say they were grateful for Dirk saving them would be a real fucking understatement, it would be like saying nothing. They were forever grateful for him, they would fight for him and protect him till the end of time, he literally gave them a real chance in life, no one could ever compare to him for her, no matter how many times Dirk told them it wasn't a big deal, that they're overreacting, that he didn't deserve to be thanked so much; they'd forever be indebted to him

They were really happy to finally meet Dirk's friends!!! If only it was under better circumstances though..

Cinthra became friends with them all quickly, as Cint's really sympathetic, emotional and very curious about everything and everyone, it was really a mystery how Dirk and Cint even coexisted with such different attitudes for so long

Cinthra really respected Jane, as she seemed mature and put together at first, but turned out to be an oddball herself! She finds her funny, sweet and dependable, and cares for her a lot, and will Never forgive The Condesce for what She did to her

Oh Roxy.. these two quickly befriended each other, both their excitable natures in harmony together, they talked and bonded a lot! Cinthra is really sympathetic towards her struggles and comforted her through a lot of stuff. Cint respects her a lot, and will protect her with her life!!💪 It seems like Roxy has a crush on them, and they like her too! Maybe when the dust settles down they'll be able to explore their relationship further🥹

Cint is really understanding towards Jake, as his struggles really resonate with her own feelings. If nobody got Jake, Cinthra got him!!🙏 Cint actively asks him about his adventures and interests, and hopefully helps him out of that persona he's playing up with patience and care

They... don't know how to feel when they meet Cynthia. Cindy can't have her chains out in front of them, as they get scared from how familiar they look and feel, but overall, they try to reconcile, even if Cinthra never knew they even have a sister in the first place, but Cynthia was 100% hyperventilating about it(Cinthra really looks like her Big Sister that died before her eyes, give her a break)

It's easy for them to become friends or at least good acquaintances with almost everyone, but even he has a limit of course, especially if someone harms their close friends

Cinthra is a Prince of Mind, and they're great at pointing out and untangling logical and emotional inconsistencies in people's opinions even though they don't realize they're doing exactly that most of the time

They and Dirk both felt quite weird about them both being Princes, have they rubbed off on each other too much(in different directions)? Cint modified their outfit to differentiate from Dirk to the point of not looking like a Prince at all, but they were more comfortable like that! They don't even think it matters, like, at all

Most would call them naive and oblivious, but they're very observant and sensitive to people's feelings and motives and can adjust their approach to them accordingly

She can generally find an approach to anyone, just give him a goddamn second; they have a pretty high emotional maturity, considering they grew up next to Dersians and the most emotionally constipated guy ever

They're able to leave mind links to objects that have sentimental value to them and others; is Lil Hal considered an object? Probably not, but they're able to communicate with him through their mind link with the glasses, sort of like a virus but harmless; with a mind link she's able to track and locate said objects, even if they're somewhere in the Void or something(not like they'll be able to retrieve said objects from that Void themselves ofc, but some navigation never hurt anyone)

They can also create mind links with people and other living beings, and yes, it's weird for both parties, and it's a lot harder for Cint to locate a person, their link jumbled because of the other person's complex thoughts and feelings; it's a lot easier if they're close friends and trust and know each other well though

They accidentally realized that they have the power to make someone forget certain things, and quickly regretted this and felt extremely bad and guilty until they were able to undo it, and even after they continuously apologized to the affected person

They can break convictions by empathetic and emotional conversations and ruthless facts at the same time; they'll call you out on your bullshit and tell you you're only human and that they understand where you're coming from

They're easy to manipulate if a person fakes good intentions to make them believe or do something, especially if said person is close to them, she has complete faith in her friends and never doubts them

They were probably mind-controlled by The Condesce at some point because of their capabilities of mass memory erasement used in propaganda

They're always curiously exploring different worlds, cultures, people's emotions and feelings, finding deep sentimental value in learning and preserving knowledge about living beings and their influence on the worlds they live in!

Overall, Cinthra is a very curious and loving soul that's learning how to Human!!🥹

Joan Ringelheim, scholar of women during the Holocaust, dies at 82

Joan Ringelheim spent nearly two decades on the staff of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, where for years she oversaw its oral history archive, one of the most significant collections of Holocaust testimonies in the world.

Her study of the Nazi murder of 6 million European Jews, she once remarked, had taught her that “nobody experienced ‘the Holocaust.’ ” Rather, she said, each person present lived one piece of it, and only through the study of those many pieces would the vast whole become visible.

But for years — decades, even, after the liberation of the camps — an entire category of experiences, in Dr. Ringelheim’s observation, went overlooked in the scholarly community.

“It was my position that the lives of women had been obscured or erased from Holocaust history,” she wrote in an essay published last year in the volume “Her Story, My Story?: Writing About Women and the Holocaust.” “Women’s experiences had been neutralized into a so-called ‘human perspective’ so that issues related specifically to women were excluded from Holocaust history.”

Beginning in the 1970s, Dr. Ringelheim led a small but insistent group of scholars who forced historical attention on the female victims of Nazi persecution — the women who muffled their babies’ cries in hiding, comforted their children on overnight trains to Auschwitz and endured sexual violence and exploitation, often to survive.

“Jewish women and men experienced unrelieved suffering during the Holocaust,” Dr. Ringelheim wrote in the volume “Women in the Holocaust,” edited by Dalia Ofer and Lenore J. Weitzman. But “Jewish women carried the burdens of sexual victimization, pregnancy, abortion, childbirth, killing of newborn babies in the camps to save the mothers, care of children, and many decisions about separation from children.”

“If in the gas chambers or before the firing squads all Jews seemed alike to the Nazis,” Dr. Ringelheim continued, “the path to this end was not always the same for women and men. The end — namely, annihilation or death — does not describe or explain the process.”

Dr. Ringelheim, a scholar credited by colleagues with leading historians to a deeper understanding of the Holocaust in all its dimensions, died Oct. 22 at her home in Columbia, Md. She was 82 and had breast cancer, said her spouse, Ellen Carr.

The daughter of Jewish immigrants from Poland, Dr. Ringelheim lost numerous relatives in the Nazi slaughter and entered academia in the 1960s, just as the field of Holocaust studies began to take shape.

She brought to her scholarship a background in philosophy as well as feminist theory and by the mid-1970s found herself asking a seemingly simple but ultimately provocative question: What did it mean to be a woman during the Holocaust?

In 1983, she and Esther Katz, both then affiliated with the Institute for Research in History in New York, organized a conference titled “Women Surviving: The Holocaust.” They invited participants including Cynthia Ozick, the writer best known for her short story “The Shawl,” about a mother who tries to conceal her young daughter in a concentration camp by hiding her in the mantle of the story’s title. A guard ultimately discovers the child and tosses her tiny body against an electrified fence.

Ozick rejected the invitation to the conference and replied, according to Dr. Ringelheim, that by examining the specific concerns of women, the organizers were “asking a morally wrong question, a question that leads us still further down the road of eradicating Jews from history.”

“Your project is, in my view, an ambitious falsehood,” Ozick wrote, according to Dr. Ringelheim’s account. “The Holocaust happened to victims who were not seen as men, women, or children . . . but as Jews.”

But for scholars who supported and built on Dr. Ringelheim’s scholarship in the succeeding years, the conference was a revelatory event.

“Until 1983, with the first conference on women and the Holocaust, we did not have a dedicated study into how women specifically navigated aspects of their lives in these moments of crisis,” Jennifer V. Evans, a professor of history at Carleton University in Ottawa, wrote in an email.

“We didn’t study how women navigated adolescence and coming of age in the shadow of mass death, how they fought to keep family together, care for children and elders in ghettos, how they experienced pregnancy, childbirth and menstruation in the camps, how young and old experienced sexual vulnerability, abuse, sexual barter and rape.”

Dr. Ringelheim’s scholarship, she added, “opened the door to future histories.”

Over two days, 400 scholars, survivors, students, children of survivors and others gathered at the Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University in Manhattan for a gathering covered by the New York Times.

Some survivors recalled that domestic skills, such as the ability to sew uniforms, allowed them to survive in the camps. Those who had fought in the resistance reported that they often took on the most perilous assignments because they were perceived as less suspect than their male comrades.

“People couldn’t imagine that a nicely dressed young woman could be up to mischief,” recounted Vera Laska, a Czech resistance fighter.

Jolly Zeleny, a survivor of Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen and several other camps, recalled the contrast she noted between male and female inmates. “Both men and women were skeletons, in identical stripes, yet there was such a difference,” she said. “The men’s bodies reflected so much more pessimism than did ours.”

Aside from its academic value, the conference offered female survivors a sense of community and the assurance that they were not alone.

“It was a way of, first of all, bringing attention to the issue, but also making the women feel comfortable,” said Katz, a scholar of women’s studies who later founded the Margaret Sanger Papers Project at New York University. “The more women who talked about it publicly,” Katz said, “the easier it was for other survivors to come forward.”

Joan Ringelheim was born in Brooklyn on May 29, 1939. For a period of her adult life she used the middle name Miriam, after her paternal grandmother, who was murdered in the Holocaust. In the United States, Dr. Ringelheim’s father owned a restaurant supply business, and her mother worked as a department store clerk.

In her contribution to the book “Her Story, My Story?,” edited by Judith Tydor Baumel-Schwartz and Ofer, Dr. Ringelheim wrote that she first met Holocaust survivors when she was 11 or 12 years old.

“At first, survivors frightened me,” she wrote. “I felt that they might have done something terrible in order to survive. In retrospect I think that I didn’t want to hear how awful it was for them because it was too much for me.”

Dr. Ringelheim enrolled at Boston University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in history in 1961, followed by a master’s degree in 1965 and a PhD in 1968, both in philosophy.

She taught at several colleges, including DePauw University in Indiana, before joining the Holocaust museum in 1989.

Sara J. Bloomfield, the museum’s director, credited Dr. Ringelheim in an interview with playing “a very critical role in the creation” of the permanent exhibit before the museum opened in 1993. Dr. Ringelheim later served as director of education and director of oral history before retiring in 2007. She personally conducted many interviews, sometimes spending entire days with survivors in their homes, recording their unsparing testimonies.

She and Carr, who were partners of 13 years, were married in 2018. Besides Carr, of Columbia, survivors include a brother.

In the early years after the end of World War II and to this day, perhaps the most famous victim of the Holocaust is a woman — a young one, Anne Frank, the German-born diarist whose account of her family’s time in hiding in an Amsterdam annex became an international bestseller, the basis of a Pulitzer Prize-winning play and the subject of a 1959 Hollywood movie.

Anne died of typhus in 1945, at age 15, at Bergen-Belsen. Over the years, millions of readers have drawn inspiration, even hope, from her posthumously published diary, and her declaration that “in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.”

Speaking to the New Jersey Jewish News, Dr. Ringelheim once said that “there is no redemptive meaning to be found for me in the Holocaust.” The event could be repeated, she feared. “Our obligation,” she added, “even if it does no good, is to remember.”
