I feel like for the first few years of guardianship Darius and Hunter really struggle to figure out how to refer to each other.
Like it's easier for Hunter, he pretty quickly settles on "guardian" for explaining their relationship to other people and just referring to Darius by name when talking to the man himself. Overtime the phrasing gradually warms, becoming "foster parent" and eventually, once Hunter's already an adult old enough to move out, "Dad".
(Sidenote: he doesn't move out til he's in his mid to late twenties, bc he's under no obligation too, Darius low-key doesn't want him too, and the two of them want to make up for lost time in a sense, since Hunter only had 2 years of legal dependency on Darius before aging out of the system. Darius adopts Hunter retroactively as an adult)
Darius on the other hand has a real conundrum on his hands for those first few years. He has a lot of options! But "ward" is too formal and makes it sound like Darius picked him up off the street like after his parents were murdered, "apprentice/student" isn't really accurate considering the focus of Darius and Hunter's relationship has less to do with Hunter learning magic and more to do with Hunter being housed and fed. "Kid" and "foster son" are there...but...
Look, Darius isn't going to refer to Hunter more familiarly than Hunter refers to him! He's not gonna make it WEIRD. He's not a dad, because Hunter doesn't want/need him to be (and also parenthood is scary <3). Darius doesn't know the first thing about being a dad, despite how his friend group teases him.
Eda and Eberwolf are the two who are worst about it. They torture him with how 'fatherly' he's allegedly being (allegations Darius will DENY til his GRAVE!!!) And Eda specifically compares his journey to hers, saying it always starts off with you referring to them as your apprentice (again, Darius doesn't plan on doing that), as your roommate (...kinda weird in Darius' opinion? But okay Eda), or even your pet (????HELLO???). But eventually, they always become your dumb kid when you least expect it.
She's had a couple cups of appleblood by this point, but Darius knows on some level she's right and he's steadfastly ignoring that fact, even as Eber continues to refer to Hunter as his "cub" (kinda cute but Darius doesn't know how Hunter would feel being compared to an animal). The only people who are even remotely reasonable about all this (besides Lilith who's a bit disinterested in kid talk) is Raine and Alador, who both sort of neutrally, a bit awkwardly refer to Hunter as Darius' Boy.
Darius referring to Hunter as "my boy" is funnily enough what sticks the longest before it evolves to son boy. Hunter's crushing it at a derby match? Darius is whooping and cheering, yelling "THAT'S MY BOY!!!" At the other parents in the stands. Hunter is doing something dangerous or inadvisable where others can see him? "Darius, your boy-" "AHH! MY BOY". Hunter, a year into his stay with Darius finally comes clean about everything to do with him being a grimwalker, and is afraid that he's going to go back to seeing him as just an inferior replacement for Darius' beloved mentor? Darius (who has just had to process some of the most bonkers, emotionally heavy information in his life) gently, hesitantly puts a hand on his shoulder (the 'good' one Hunter doesn't mind people touching), and says that Hunter's much more than that. He's Darius' Boy and he's not going to kick him out or get angry or love him any less for things out of his control. It's good. They're good.
Like I said, it evolves over time and 'boy' becomes somewhat obsolete as the two get caught up in the joy of finally feeling able to explicitly refer to each other as family. But unlike "guardian" or "ward" the word never gets fully retired. Even when Hunter is 30 and is arguing that he's more of a man than a boy now, he is still getting referred to by Darius as "his boy", the way some parents never really stop calling their adult kids baby or kiddo (Camila and Eda respectively btw).
Hunter makes one of those corny matching shirt sets at some point for a father's Day gift when he's 17/18, where the two shirts say "if lost, return Boy to me" (Darius) and "I'm Boy" (Hunter). Hunter mostly did it so he could own a funny shirt that says "I'm boy". Darius openly weeps upon seeing them. Like Oh my Titan he's boy. He's my boy. Oh wow
#ramblings of a lunatic#the owl house#toh#hunter toh#darius deamonne#dadrius#made this instead of finishing my dadrius week day 1 comic. it's okay i have time#i think this post dips it's toes into being one of those 'part writing drabble/part textpost analysis' posts#which I'm okay w/ tbh i love those#i just hope it reads well#the important thing about dadrius + eberwolf to me is that it's just as unlikely a trio as King Eda and Luz are#just as weird and has just as gradual and retrospectively funny a journey as them#i also specified foster parent instead of adoptive parent just bc i read it in a fic once where Hunter was placed in isles foster care-#-post canon and he had a social worker who was a gargoyle named Chantelle. it was delightful#this is my homage to that. the fic was 'the titan laughs in flowers' i think (thank you user yardsards for the rec)#alador still gets the instinct to refer to Hunter as the golden guard and amity gets on his case about it#so referring to Hunter as darius' boy grew out of that and spread to raine who finds it kind of adorable#darius refers to hunter as his foster son for the first time when his (darius' i mean) family comes to visit#not as like a statement of anything they don't deny Hunter as a deamonne. they love him like they love a scraggly cat#but just like. it felt right for Darius in the moment and Hunter got emotional about it#anyway happy early dadrius week I'm rotating them in my mind I'm biting down on them like a chew toy etc etc

This week on "Dadrius can still win" I bring you:
Dana's newest art of the Hexsquad & Hagsquad, focusing specifically on Hunter.
Tumblr media
1. That outfit is FAR too fashionable to be clothes Hunter picked himself, or any other adult in his life would've for that matter (no offense to Camila, offense to Eda tho). From the nice dress shoes, to the fitted yet baggy jeans, the sleek jacket, sunglasses, and slicked back hair, this entire look screams "Darius picked it out for me :)"
2. Patches on the jeans & jacket, both a reflection of Hunter's current obsession with mending clothes but also that sewing is a part of his relationship with Darius, being the one who initially taught him & that Hunter observed enough of his handiwork to notably recall details of how it looked vs the sewing machine.
4. Hunter's demeanor. Hunter's a dork, that's what we love about him. Yes he's a competent fighter & has decent parkour moves & has confidence in his abilities, but he's not exactly suave or cool. That air he's got feels so much like Darius', with it being even funnier that Darius is also putting on fronts a bit with it.
3. The patches themselves!!! We got a King face, one polkadot patch & two striped patches (patterns are another fashion thing, aka something Darius cares about), a flower (that looks similar to the ones Willow has all over her jeans), the "Quitter Badge" that Eda made for her Bad Girl Coven that she offered to Luz back in "The First Day" (it took me FOREVER to read it before I realized it was a show reference. Also there's a second connection to the Clawthorne fam on his jacket), a Cardinal wing in the center of his back (rip Flapjack my beloved), and last but not least an abomination coven logo. Hmmm, that's a bit random isn't it! He's never shown a particular interest in abomination magic -- unlike how he has for wild magic -- but also the Coven system was a product of Belos, someone Hunter has finally cut off from his life. So. The abomination logo can only be a reference to Darius, otherwise Hunter has literally no ties to it so it'd make no sense being one of the patches on his jacket. And the fact he has that patch that can ONLY be for Darius feels like an extremely blatant reference to their relationship.
Edit: 3.A. The abomination patch is actually not the exact coven logo, it has a ponytail added to it, which is Darius' signature style. Further points to Dadrius with the abomination patch
Tumblr media
Anyway here's teen Darius to match because omg he's so fucking cute & a GOOBER. DARIUS HAS BEEN A LIFELONG GOOBER.
Tumblr media
Perry really cuts into the way Darius' cloak elegantly swishes behind him. But he can't be bothered to care when he has to Strike A Pose ✨ And All rn. His giant smirk with his hand cupping his chin is the best detail

Someone interrupted spa night. It's okay, Darius doesn't mind.
This is just a bunch of headcanons mashed into one art lmao
I saw this one comic where Darius helped dye Hunter's hair red (like Flap) and I think he would!! Especially after his death to honour him. (If someone can tell me who drew that would be much appreciated! Would love to credit them)
Hunter likes to sew plushies a lot when he found out how to. He started out with a very messy looking Flap plush but Darius helped clean up the messy parts
Hunter has night terrors (because with all the stuff he went through, yeah) so he goes to find Darius often. Not a very uncommon scene.
Do you know that I love Dadrius and his son? I love them a lot.

A little silly dadrius headcanon:
At first Darius had doubts that he could be an efficient parent to Hunter and doubted that Hunter wanted to stay with him bc the dynamic may have reminded him of being in the coven so he sets out to find suitable family unit that would take Hunter in.
Cue comedic montage of various couples that hunter goes through until they find one that believe would be a good fit. During this, darius still states that he wants to mentor Hunter and be a part of his life no matter where Hunter ends up.
Internally, Darius very much wants to take Hunter in but is so scared that he firsts asks Eda for advice of taking in a teenager then consoles Camila who has actually watched over Hunter.
Not even a week after Hunter giving a trial run of a new family, the couple get into a spat with each other (a kid doesnt fix marital problems?! Who knew!?).
Hunter runs back to Darius' house and asks if he could stay for the night, to that Darius makes the brave move and responds "do you wanna stay here forever?"

Hunter's Room (Fan Design)
It is about time I finally did this, now I can make so many drawing ideas come true with a room for Hunter designed. Also, for those who read my "Timeskip Watching and Dreaming AU" series of fanfics on A03, this is what Hunter's room looks like. This room is a room in Darius' house, so yippie Dadrius.
Alright, I know the doors can be confusing to let me break this down.
The door on the south wall with the small cuckoo clock like doors is the door to exit the room. I put cuckoo doors on the door because it's for Waffles.
The door that's on the wall that's jetting out is the door to the walk-in closet
And the the door on the west wall is the door to Hunter's private bathroom.
I originally wanted to do the entire Deamonne household at once, but, no way that would take forever. Maybe I'll do parts of it in the future but for right now, NO. If I did, I'd probably do Darius' room next and the living room after that.
This took such a long time to design, and it was my first time ever designing a background completely on my own. I needed to take off the training wheels and design my own background for once, and for my first attempt, I think I did a decent job.
The only thing that I couldn't add is a ceiling fan, but that was only because of the angles I had. I'm sure I could've if I had a different angle. Im going to have to design that separately.
This took since October 20th to finish, I probably could've got it done faster, but uni kept me busy and such. Either way, now that I've finished this, I can't wait to make drawings with this room. Yay!
Alright so: Tumblr exclusive content from here on out since insta has a stupid character limit, and their cropping system sucks
I'm gonna go on an infodump to why I decided to put almost everything here in Hunter's room.
North Wall:
Bed: I decided to make the headboard and footboard a cherry colored wood because Hunter would definitely like cherry wood because it's reddish. Referencing Willow's headboard that has a flower, I changed that into a bird for Hunter. I gave him a blue blanket in reference to Waffles. I headcannon that Hunter LOVES plushies, so I gave him some plushies I'd think he'd like. He'd definitely like squishmallows, so I gave him a blue-jay, cardinal, and wolf squishmellow. I also gave him a small wolf plush, as well as a small parrot plush and a peacock plush. The Sprig plushie is special, as it's not the same one as he had in the castle. It's a life-sized one Willow won him at a carnvial. (Reference to one of my fics).
Nightable: Nothing much to say here outside of the fact that I felt like Hunter would need one. I gave him a crystal ball because I felt like he'd like one.
Desk: This is where Hunter does work, from designing clothes to sew to studying for school. He has a log of regluar wood to practice carving on. (This room is set when Hunter is still a kid early during the WAD timeskip) He also has a punch a pencils, a desk lamp, and some books on there.
Corkboard: Hunter keeps notes for his school studies, and personal projects here. Sometimes he doodles things and puts them up there, such as the wolf and birds doodles.
Wall: Hunter would 100% be that person to have a trillion posters. I gave him a Flyer Derby poster, and a hummingbird poster. The Ruler's Reach poster is actually signed by King himself. Here's also a wolf calender, since I'd figured he'd like that, and a cuckoo clock that I headcannon Hunter and Dell carved together.
Bookshelf: On the bottom shelf, Hunter keeps a bunch of random books he likes.
On the second shelf, he has a photo of Flapjack, textbooks for his abominations and potions classes, and a photo of Willow
On the third shelf, he has textbooks for his illusions, construction, wild magic, plants, beastkeeping, and runes classes.
On the forth shelf, he has a photo of Darius, textbooks for his bard, oracle, and healing classes, and a photo of Waffles.
On the top shelf, he has his two favorite books of all time, Cosmic Frontier and Ruler's Reach, specially displayed with them propped up.
Jesus, that was by far the longest description we'll have.
East Wall:
Window: Hunter has a basic window with blue curtains. I originally wanted to make the curtains space themed for Cosmic Frontier, but then realized that would be a pain to draw over and over again, so I kept it blue. Maybe I can make Hunter's shower curtain space themed instead.
Other then that, there is nothing new on this wall that I'd like to cover. (I'd rather cover things that appear on other walls in their sections)
South Wall:
Wall: Hunter has two more posters on this wall. A Cosmic Frontier Poster. This is a reference in itself, where in Star Trek, the equivalent of O'Bailey has an asian wife that is a Bontonist, and that is sorta a parrel to Huntlow. So I decided to make a headcannon design for both O'Bailey, and the Bontonist I decided to rename to Aiko. So boom. Huntlow reference. The other poster is simply a wolf poster.
Box: This is pretty self explanatory. Its a box with sewing supplies.
Mannequin: Since Hunter sews, I'd imagine he'd like to have a mannequin to help make the clothing design process easier.
Table: This is the same sewing Machine from Thanks to Them, as Camila gave it to Hunter as a gift.
West Wall:
Outside of the door of the bathroom, there is nothing new on the west wall that I haven't already covered.
Bonus:

Here is the original blueprint for the entire Deamonne household. I could go from here and design every last aspect of the house, but that would take ages. I'd definitely like to, but its just so much work. Like I said, the next two rooms I'd design are Darius' room and the living room. Plus, Hunter's room was by definition going to he the hardest, since he has the most stuff and therefore detail in his room.
Tumblr media
For when I wanted to focus solely on Hunter's room, I referenced the upstairs blueprint snd made a more detailed blueprint just for his room. As you can see, A LOT ended up changing from this to the final version.

(So sorry if you got this already tumblr has been eating my asks recently gahhh)
In my head, there's this very angsty scenario of how things would play out between Darius and Hunter in the aftermath of All The Shit, where Darius basically pushes Hunter away because of his own internal guilt over how he treated Hunter during his time in the coven, not necessarily because he just feels bad about it, but because he recognizes that if he and Hunter get closer, Hunter would not allow himself to get mad at Darius for his bullying and dismissal -- the same way Hunter never allowed himself to get mad at Belos. And Darius would think Hunter deserves to be able to get angry at him, (projecting his own anger at himself, of course), so he puts distance between them in the hopes that Hunter would eventually be angry at him for the things in the coven. And poor Hunter would be so lost and confused about it -- he thought they were getting closer, that they were friends. It would take a stern talking to from one of the unexpected parents (Eda, probably) or just a smack upside the head from Camilla to set him straight again. "Darius, it doesn't matter what you think might not happen -- he's made his choice already. He wants you. And if you make him feel safe enough, whether he gets mad at you initially won't matter either, because he'll feel safe enough to deal with it eventually."
(No worries!!! Tumblr is so wonky sometimes)
Oh, my goodness, I love that.
Something I really love to play with when it comes to Dadrius early dynamic after the finale is that it can be such a mess of misunderstandings because Hunter doesn't feel like he's quite enough (right enough, worthy enough, normal enough) to be someone's child, while Darius doesn't feel prepared to be someone's parent, let alone Hunter's, which is so ironic because I think for Darius part of that doubt would come from the fact he's perhaps the adult who knows the best how much help Hunter will need and the one with the best idea of the extent of the trauma he suffered while at the castle, which means to him it feels like a more daunting situation; he does NOT want to mess things up when Hunter is currently in a bit of an emotionally fragile estate.
This would definitely play a big part here because Darius, who knows Hunter used to justify what Belos did to him because they were family —for the most part Hunter probably didn't realize some of the treatment was messed up, but when he did, he learned well to find excuses for Belos—, knows very well too how Hunter tends to let authority figures he even just remotely admires or respects walk all over him (he did that himself once, after all), and while that's definitely something that can be unlearned, he would be afraid that his own actions back then might influence too much how things go now. Especially because I think that while obviously he made up for that, at the time Hunter was a bit like a wild animal you don't want to scare by offering too much human decency at once 😭 He couldn't say "hey, Hunter, it was a bit fucked up of me to project my grief on you and insult you, you are not responsible for other people's, especially adults, emotional troubles" or else Hunter would have been jumping through the window.
So because he had to work slowly through Hunter being comfortable and not weirded out by being treated kindly and taught some level of boundaries, Darius could feel like Hunter might have a skewed vision of things and might think it's okay if Darius mistreated him, and while that might be sort of true, it's no more so than how Hunter is with any other adult with power over him.
Poor Hunter just feels like Darius was kind to him to the extent of making sure he was safe and out of Belos' reach and now he doesn't give a damn about him... and why would he when Hunter has nothing to offer? 😔 With Camila things were temporary, and with Belos he had to earn his place, so he can't just expect Darius to want him around forever or at all without doing anything for him, right? So he probably wouldn't even try to insist one bit to Darius, he would respect that distance.
Hunter and Darius are truly such a pair, out there thinking the worst of themselves and creating a conflict where there's none.
I figure Eber would be the first one to try and talk some sense onto Darius, and then probably Eda or Camila or whoever Hunter is staying with for now, since then Darius would not only have the objective view of things from Eber, but also a glimpse of how Hunter is feeling, which is very important if he's assuming that Hunter is just gonna forget their bond and thrive somewhere else if he just tries hard enough.
There's definitely going to be such an awkward period after this too, I think the whole "you can be angry at me" matter would have to be one of the firsts they tackle considering how much it escalated. Darius might not be so convinced at first, caught up as he is in his own self-doubts, but it would be very good for Hunter for his parent to say that to him, since it already shows from the first moment that this isn't going to be any kind of dynamic of servitude or anything of that sort. And you know, Hunter might not even mind that much what happened at the coven because he understands how that environment can make you angry and spiteful, and the kindness Darius showed afterward was very significant to him more than a simple apology would, but ironically he might be upset at Darius pulling his whole distancing himself move.
Not exactly how either of them expected things to go, but they can work with it, and seeing that it won't be a deal breaker will help them form a stronger bond because they know they don't have to walk on eggshells around each other... as far as it comes to this matter at least. There's quite a lot both of them have to learn.

please ramble about your ao3 fics!
Not sure if you had a specific fic or topic in mind, but I'm just gonna talk about Effortlessly My Baby since it's my most popular one.
When I get writer's block, I like to take a step back from my current project for a day or two to recoup, and during this time, sometimes I like to write something else entirely to keep up the creativeness. I was working on another longfic as my main project when I started writing Effortlessly My Baby on the side, just as something to do when I got stuck. So, in a way, we can thank my writer's block for EMB.
At some point I'd written so much of it that I just decided to start posting it, because why not? It might have been a side project, but I was still proud of it. At this point in time, I was still not super immersed into the TOH fandom, so I had no idea how big the Dadrius side was initially, and so I was not expecting my fic to get a lot of readers. To my surprise, it did, and I can never express how thankful I am for all the positive reception it received. It even quickly got to the point where EMB was getting far more traction than my main fic. New chapters of my main fic would rarely get any interaction but every new chapter of EMB brought in even more comments and kudos. Writer's aren't lying when they say comments help with motivation. Writing the fic would have been fun for me regardless, but it was made even more fun by the fact so many people were talking with me about it and I got to interact with so many Dadrius fans at once. Eventually, my focus shifted from my other fic to EMB, because why wouldn't it? The praise made me feel good, but not only that, I was giving something to people that brought them a lot of joy and comfort. The fic was originally around 25-30 chapters but because so many people ended up liking it, I ended up with the motivation to squeeze even more chapters into it, making it what it is now.
Anyway, on to the fic itself.
I was always a big fan of Darius and Dadrius, even before I immersed myself in fandom. It was inevitable I'd write about it eventually. The only surprising part is that it wasn't the first type of fic I posted.
The AU itself was something that kinda rotated around in my brain for like a solid year before I actually wrote it down. I wondered what their dynamic in canon would have been like if they'd known each other for longer than a few months. It's unknown how long they've known each other in canon, but I was running off the assumption that it hasn't been that long. Even if they knew of each other, I don't think there wasn't much, if any, non work related interaction before Hunter became Coven Head. It would make sense if Belos was keeping him isolated, after all.
Hunter's isolation was kind of the driving point for the overarching plot. He surely didn't enjoy not being allowed to make friends, and so a lonely kid with a desperate need for socialization with someone other than his emotionally distant uncle would be the perfect set up for a story about found family. Hunter needed someone in his life who actually cared about him, and Darius needed someone who could make him realize he wanted to love again after the death of his mentor.
The "mute" nephew idea was mostly because I thought it would lead to funny misinterpretations on Darius' part, but it also does have more significance. Hunter basically has two sides of himself under Belos: Nephew and Golden Guard. With Belos, he only knows how to be one or the other. Hunter wants to be taken seriously as Golden Guard as is worried he won't be if people knew who he was. (Nvm that it doesn't work.) He'd just be a nepotism kid to everyone. So, he never takes off the mask as Golden Guard and never speaks as Hunter so no one can recognize his voice. This means, however, that no matter who he is in the moment, he can never fully be himself. No matter what, he's lost some aspect of his identity.
After meeting Darius, Hunter's priorities get flipped. Darius already hates the Golden Guard, so now Hunter's goal is to make sure Darius doesn't find out Hunter is the Golden Guard. With everyone else, he was craving a sense of authority, but Darius ended up giving him a taste of what it was like to have a friend, and he was more terrified of losing that.
On Darius' side, I wanted to write about a man who lost someone he loved and in response, chose to give up. His mentor's death made him into a repressed shell of a man who was too scared to get close to anyone new ever again. Then, he meets a random kid who won't leave him alone and ends up worming his way into his cold, dead heart enough to slowly warm it back up without Darius even realizing until it was too late. The thing is, it didn't even take all that much for Hunter to do that. I like to think Darius likes to act tough and nonchalant a lot of the time, but he's inherently a very soft and caring person, even if he doesn't want to be at first.
The fic (and my writing skills) are far from perfect but despite that, Effortlessly My Baby is always going to have a special place in my heart. I was very sad to have to end it but at the same time, every story needs to end eventually. I can't just keep them going forever. I'm always grateful to everyone who read it and I hope it brings people joy for years to come.

Hey so like, I'm looking at your post about still believing in Luz and Hunter as siblings. I'm on board for that too obviously, and am thinking of the part where he's in The Collector's palace and feeling like no one is waiting for him. I guess I'm trying to rationalize somehow...why he wasn't thinking of her words "You're family now" right after he sent Willow off to her parents. I get why the writers wanted to include Luz's narration of "And if someone thought they had no one waiting for them, well, they were in for a nice surprise", yet I'm sort of telling myself that perhaps Hunter didn't want to burden Luz and Camila at that time or something. If he's Luz's sibling he could just walk to Eda's house and join them there after making sure Gus and Willow are reunited with their family. Maybe that's what he, Darius and Eberwolf did offscreen after they reunited. Hm..
Honestly, I almost don't get the point of them including the "You're family now" line in TTT if they weren't going to follow it up with something a little more solid. Then again, one of my major gripes with the last three episodes in general are them constantly bringing up plot points that don't ever get any real follow-up("You're family now"; Hunter's flashstep powers(why did he even get them if they weren't going to be used in the finale in a major way? Seems like an odd writing choice so late in the game. And I am a FAN of him still having the flashstep, but I'm still pointing this out as a weird choice); Hunter not getting time to grieve at ALL; no Wittebro/Evelyn lore(I think TTT should have done a proper delve into their past. I don't necessarily think it's a good choice to leave it unexplored, but I'm kinda torn); Hunter's fear over the others finding out he was a Grimwalker getting glossed over with two lines when it was SUCH a Big Deal to him and he needed a proper conversation about it - that one's a BIG beef; probably several more I'm forgetting).
And like, back on Hunter and Luz Siblings, as I've said, it doesn't have to be straight up adoption papers or anything, it's found family, it doesn't have to be traditional anything. I just think it's so weird to have this really significant moment where Luz calls him that and he literally bursts into tears over it because he has no one at that point, but then there's not like, any other pay off or mention of it? (Camila also called him 'baby'.)
Imagine if Hunter had been looking sad after Willow ran to her dads, then Camila(and Luz maybe, even though she was still with Eda at the time), came up and smiled at him and hugged him? Really cementing that found family thing that was brought up with them. (And just to be clear, none of this means I would have wanted Hunter to live in the Human Realm, I was never a fan of that idea. I just want him to be Luz's sibling and visit the Human Realm often because he has a PLACE there that will always be there for him when he needs it.)
I pretty much figured they'd go for Dadrius, and I'm not like... livid about it or anything. I just think if they really wanted to go that route then they should have built it up more, and I personally would have also needed an apology from Darius to Hunter about how he treated him in ASIAS was wrong and how he's going to be better from there on out, etc, before I feel like that scenario would have any actual meaning or pay-off. (I am not bashing Darius, I like Darius, but he treated Hunter like shit in ASIAS.)
All this being said, I don't think the ending negates Hunter being Luz's sibling, even if Darius straight adopted him(I don't think he did), it doesn't mean he's lost his place with other important guardian/parental/mentor figures in his life. I think that's the most beautiful thing about found family. I think most of my salt just comes from them not really following a thread that was seemingly started in TTT and seemed like an awfully Big Damn Deal to the boy, considering how hard he cried.
I'm being salty and I have my critiques, but don't mistake this for me hating on the show or anything. I still really enjoyed the finale, but as a fan I have issues and things I didn't like.

i love /s how dadrius haters always bring up that dadrius fans never discuss or deal with how he used to behave which just tells me that they havent read a single fic about them
we put that man through it with his guilt over his previous behaviors, not just with hunter but with other characters too
and then the even bigger irony is that some hunter noceda fans go and critize us, but then don't look at the issues in their part of the fandom aka how camila is treated like she is mom first, anything else second, and how her relationships with her other kids, and the hexsquad in general, are pushed to the side in favor of hunter
the fact that vee & camila has less works on ao3 than hunter & camila tells you all you need to know so maybe all of us should stay in our own lanes
(and amity & camila has even less fics, eventho that's her future daughter-in-law who also lacked proper parents and was also shown to have bonded with her, to the point camila has an arm around her in the finale shot)

I want something just like this
Fandom: The Owl House
Rating: G
Relationships: Hunter & Darius, Hunter/Luz (romantic)
Characters: Hunter, Darius Deamonne, Luz Noceda; MENTIONED - Emperor Belos | Philip Wittebane
Summary: Hunter wants his first Grom to be perfect. He just doesn't know how Darius is going to react.
Word count: 1.336
AO3
A/N: I bet I'm going to get hate for this lmao. The focus though isn't the romance, so if you can still tolerate Lunter then I guess you'll be able to enjoy the Dadrius. This is my first time writing Darius/Dadrius though, so I hope it's good enough, at least.
TRIGGER WARNINGS - past child abuse and trauma
HUNTER AND LUZ ARE NOT CANONICALLY SIBLINGS. HATE AND ANNOYING COMMENTS WILL BE BLOCKED.
P/roship DNI.
--
“Your carriage still awaits, little prince.”
“Just a second!” Hunter replies, trying to tie his hair and failing miserably. Multiple times.
There’s an impatient sigh.
“You know it’s rude to keep your girlfriend waiting, young man.”
“I just need a minute!”
“No, Hunter, you’re late.”
“You’re not helping me get done!”
“What are you possibly doing in there?” Darius questions, annoyed. “I’ve taught you how to dress fittingly, it shouldn’t be hard at this point.”
“It’s different this time!”
“What do you mean?” The door handle moves, but it can’t get through the lock. Darius knocks again, firmer this time. “Hunter, let me in.”
“I just need FIVE MINUTES!” Hunter snaps.
“If you don’t open this door on the count of three, I’m tearing it down myself.”
The boy freezes.
A sensation he hasn’t felt in long.
Maybe it’s Darius’ tone, maybe it’s the reason why he’s taking so much time to come out, maybe it’s the fact he doesn’t know what’s going to happen if the door is indeed torn down.
Regardless, Darius starts counting.
“One…”
Hunter stares at himself in the mirror. He knows it’s almost done, but it’s not perfect.
“Two…”
Fearing what will come next, the teenager quickly opens the door and turns his back to Darius. He can tell the man is already crossing his arms, disappointed.
“Well?”
Gulping, Hunter holds his homemade cloak, hiding most of it from his mentor. He’s shaking an awful lot and he tries not to make it obvious, but of course, Hunter is a mess and he’s terrible at hiding things.
“I…” he sighs. “I tried…”
Finally, he gives in and turns back to his mentor. Noting the heavy silence in the room, Hunter can’t look at the other’s green eyes, for he wanted to look exactly like him: the cloak covering part of his body, only it’s on his right arm instead of the left. The blond hair tied in a bun with longer sideburns. The difference being that Hunter wears a dark gray suit, besides the cloak being red in honor of Flapjack.
As he gets no response from Darius, Hunter’s brown eyes blur.
“It’s bad, isn’t it,” he assumes.
Darius takes a while to respond.
“Hunter–”
“I’m sorry, I- I tried, I wanted to be good”– Hunter’s lips quiver and his legs shake so much that he’s on the floor, begging for the other’s mercy –“but I failed, I’m a failure.”
“Titans, Hunter, no.” He senses another presence kneeling down in front of him.
“Forgive me, I’m- I’m a mess, I’m not right!”
“Hunter,” Darius begs, “Hunter, listen to me. Can you listen to me?”
The boy nods.
“Can you look at me?”
Hunter, hesitantly, obeys, face wet with tears.
“None of that is true,” Darius tells him. “You’re not a failure. You don’t need to prove that you’re good.”
Hunter sniffs. “I just… I just wanted to be like you.”
“You don’t need to be. You’re enough just the way you are.”
Waffles has flown to Darius’ shoulder, trying to reinforce his mentor’s words. Hunter’s dread slowly quiets down.
Darius doesn’t act superior to him. He doesn’t control Hunter with the use of fear; he’s here, on the same level as his, gently reassuring him in a way Belos would never. Darius is nothing like Belos.
Hunter knows at this point he should be able to tell the difference, but sometimes it feels like he’s back to square one, and it’s scary and painful, fearing for his life ending at any wrong step. Hence why he’s so surprised that Darius is… actually safe. Has always been safe.
The teen dries his face.
“I… I still want to be like you, Darius,” Hunter concludes. “Not because I want to please you… but because I’m really proud to have your guidance.”
Darius looks… emotional.
Before Hunter can look further into it, he’s being pulled in a hug, strong arms soothing him from the evils of the world, even the ones that aren’t out there, but inside Hunter’s head.
The latter freezes again, but… it’s the good kind.
Darius doesn’t usually show affection other than head pats. Sometimes he goes for the hand on Hunter’s shoulder. But never a hug.
And it’s not a quick hug, for that matter.
It lasts a long time. Saying so many words that will never be spoken.
But Hunter can definitely hear “I’m sorry” and “I would kick Belos’ butt myself if I could.”
And he can’t help smiling, ultimately calming down in the embrace.
Finally, Darius clears his throat nervously and lets go, patting Hunter’s arms.
“Now, we can’t keep your girlfriend waiting,” the former insists. “You could’ve asked for my help, you know.”
“I wanted it to be a surprise.” I wanted it to be perfect.
“Sure you did.” Darius smiles.
He helps Hunter with the hair bun, as well as adjusting the clothes since everything is a mess. But for the most part, he doesn’t have to change anything else about his looks.
“Alright, this should do,” Darius sighs.
Hunter hums at the mirror. “Do I look okay?”
“You look… like you.”
“And is that good?”
“Obviously.”
He blushes, unsure what to say.
With this, Darius is guiding him to the front door, where Luz awaits, wearing a dark purple and red suit, her brown hair slicked back. She gasps and grins widely, eyes sparkling like light spells, and she runs all the way to Hunter to hug him.
“Oh my gosh! You look so handsome!” Luz exclaims.
Hunter’s cheeks burn as red as his cloak. “Heh, I… had some help.”
He smiles cheekily at Darius, who winks at him.
“Wait, hold on,” Luz lets go, taking her phone. “I gotta take a picture of you guys!”
“Of… us?” Hunter and Darius look at one another, surprised.
“Yeah! You look so much like father and son!”
Hunter is taken aback by the word choice. Darius, his… father? Would he approve of that?
Before he can actually ask, Darius is putting an arm around him and pulling him close, posing rather happily for the photo. Hunter is frozen for a while, not believing this is really happening. But once Darius gives him a trusting look, the boy loosens up and puts his own arm on his mentor’s back.
When Luz shows them the picture, it doesn’t look awkward in the slightest. It looks natural, it looks… right.
“Could you send it to me later?” Darius requests.
“Sure!”
“Alright, now it’s my turn to take pictures of the love birds.”
Waffles appears the moment the word “birds” is said. Hunter and Luz pose for the camera. Only he doesn’t look at it – he’s staring at his girlfriend with the dumbest smile of all. The blue jay palisman is lying on Hunter’s head, much to Darius’ enjoyment.
“I’ll be sending these to you two and your mother, Luz,” Darius tells them.
“They look awesome!” Luz slides through the pictures. “Thanks, Darius!”
“Yeah… thanks.” For everything, Hunter wants to add.
He has never seen Darius this happy and proud.
“Now, go have fun, you’re rather late,” he says, making a shooing gesture. “I’ll be picking you two up later tonight.”
“Okay! Bye!” Luz waves excitedly at him.
“Bye, Darius,” Hunter says rather shyly, but with so much feeling.
The man is waving back, looking like he’s going to cry of joy at any moment.
Finally, Luz is offering her hand to Hunter, who takes it gently and confidently. She looks at him like he’s the most beautiful person she’s ever met. He could say the very same about her.
His first Grom night is fun. It’s filled with life and love. It’s when Hunter realizes he’ll always be loved and supported, even when everything seems to turn against him. Today, he gets to be a normal boy, enjoying his night with his girlfriend and all of his friends, and knowing his father figure will be waiting for him later.
Hunter knows now… he has a home to return to.

ALSO after careful consideration (some light googling) I've come up with middle names for the hexsquad
Luz's middle name is Manuela. It's a feminine form of Manuel which I figured could very well be her dad's full name. Luz's connection and similarities to her dad are very important to her and to the story overall, so an homage to him feels sweet and fitting!
I was torn between Amity's middle name being either Regan or Cordelia. Regan because I thought "little ruler" sounded EXACTLY like something odalia would've chosen for one of her kids, but I think overall I prefer the verbal flow and meaning of Cordelia (which means "heart" btw). I just think it'd be nice if Amity had this imposing last name with a threatening legacy and then a first and middle name that represent the things actually important to her
Back when the toh "next time on..."/"pilot" was released and we all found out that Willows pilot name was Paulina/Polleena (I prefer the latter spelling since it's plant themed! Pollen and whatnot), I saw some people suggest Polleena as her middle name, and the hcs just stuck ever since! It fits since (going off the spelling I decided) pollen helps things to grow, and Willow not only has a very fleshed out arc, she's also the catalyst/important to many others! Also again, it just rolls off the tongue well. Can very clearly picture Harvey or Gilbert saying "Willow Polleena Park >:(" in their Dad Voice.
Since Gus' full name is Augustus, I immediately thought of the Roman emperor and started looking at other Roman names for him, before settling on Antony. The most obvious reason for this is alliteration and the fact it sounds really nice to say "Augustus Antony Porter". His first name means "venerable" or "sacred", and Antony means "priceless". Hence, I think it'd be cute if (consciously or unconsciously) when Perry named him he was just hammering home how much he fucking loves his boy. Alternate ideas with the same scheme though is Julian (comes from Julia which means "youthful", Gus' age is relevant to his character in many ways.)
Hunter...doesn't even have a confirmed last name. In demon realm paperwork? It's probably Deamonne. But as much as I love dadrius, I am also a fan of the "it takes a village" approach and you can pry Hunter Noceda from my cold, dead hands. So no matter who he lives full time with, I hc hunter sees a lot of different people as "family". He'd be excited about it! He went from no parents to, like, 4! That's counting Darius, Camila, Eda and Raine (though tbh I hc the latter as more "cool aunt and her cool partner" in hunters eyes but Dells like a cool grampa to him. He's not gonna turndown the clawthorne name!) All this to say, I think Hunter is an elusive tripple-barreler for last names. So I hc he takes part of his alias from ASIAS and uses that to complete his silly, dramatic name, officially crowning himself "Hunter Jasper Bloodwilliams Noceda-Clawthorne-Deamonne". What a guy. I love him
In conclusion I love giving characters middle names so FUCKING much. Get birth certificate-ed idiot!!!

Whispers Of Uncle's Ghost
This is my work for the dadrius week prompt "Uncle Eberwolf"
@sergeantsporks
I hope you all enjoy this ♡♡
Hunter had his arms wrapped around his legs and sighed for the third time in just a minute.
The day had actually started quite well. Darius, Eberwolf, and he had had their usual calm breakfast and then they all had gone for a walk in the woods. Since Eberwolf had found out that Hunter had never had a chance to really see nature and all its facets during his time in the coven, he had suggested some of his favorite places in the forest, to which the whole family now regularly took short hikes.
Hunter loved spending time with his family and all morning he had been filled with joy and happiness. However, it had come to an abrupt end when Darius had said something that made his blood run cold.
Eberwolf had unpacked some of their bags for hiking and Darius had said with a grin to Hunter, "Go help your Uncle Eberwolf, I'll make some hot tea and get some cookies from the cupboard."
The problem had been neither the cookies nor the tea, no, Darius had called Eberwolf Hunter's uncle. And even though Hunter definitely saw the little demon as a family member and he was incredibly fond of him, the word 'uncle' awakened a queasy feeling in him.
He had become quite dizzy and without another word he had disappeared upstairs in his room, where he now sat in a corner and had to hold back his tears.
Did Eberwolf expect him to address him as uncle? Did Darius expect him to do it?
Hunter didn't know if he was ready to call someone else uncle. Not after everything that happend. The last one he had called that was Belos and whenever he thought of him he got scared and his knees started to shake.
But would Eberwolf be disappointed in him if he didn't call him uncle? Especially now that he started to call Darius Dad from time to time? Would Eberwolf feel bad or left out? Hunter didn't want to be the reason he felt hurt, but he didn't think he was capable of saying it without panicking.
He tried, but as soon as he just thought of the word, his throat seemed to tightened and he was unable to say it. A tear ran down his cheek.
Would Eberwolf and Darius be disappointed in him that he couldn't even say that simple word? It was just a word. It shouldn't be so hard to say it, right?
There was a sudden knock at the door. Hunter let his face sink into his arms and sighed a soft, "Come in."
The door was gently pushed open and from the footsteps Hunter knew it must have been Eberwolf. He toddled over to him and gently placed one of his small hands on his upper arm.
Hunter sighed and sat up straight. He raised a hand, wiped the tear from his cheek, and looked over at Eberwolf with sad eyes.
"Darius has been worried ever since you ran away," Eberwolf said softly, gently brushing another stray tear from Hunter's cheek as it escaped his eyes, "What's wrong?"
Hunter tried to look at Eberwolf as he said it, but was unable to. "Darius- Darius said something. Nothing- nothing bad or anything, but well, I- I don't know- it felt- weird."
Eberwolf waited a moment to see if Hunter had anything else to add before saying softly, "I heard what he said. Do you want to tell me what didn't feel good about it?"
"That word Darius used," Hunter said, frustration in his voice. Frustration that he still couldn't say uncle.
"Uncle?" Eberwolf asked softly, giving Hunter one of his typical smiles. Hunter nodded slowly and looked to the ground.
"Belos was the last one I called that." he admitted, "I- I see you as part of the family, I really do, but that- that word just feels wrong. But I don't want to disappoint you or exclude you from anything really."
Eberwolf slowly spread his arms and Hunter had to smile softly as he stepped closer to him, climbing onto his lap and snuggling gently against him. "You don't have to give me a fancy family name to show me you love me, cub. I know that just the same. I'm sure Darius wasn't fully thinking when he said that. We both just want you to be okay."
"Okay, " Hunter said whose heart was now so full that tears came to his eyes again. He nuzzled his face into Eberwolf's incredibly soft mane of hair and sighed, but this time out of relief.
When Darius came into the room a few minutes later, presumably to see if he was all right, he smiled softly as he found the two of them snuggling.
"Hey," he said to Hunter, "is everything okay?"
Hunter nodded. "Yeah. Love you Dad."
Darius smiled softly and came over to them briefly to give them both a gentle kiss on the forehead. "And I love you guys. You are the best family in the world."

Thinking about how Hunter probably thought he'd just live in the human realm forever.
He was probably looking at how everyone treated Vee in relation to her traumatic history and thinking "hey, maybe they'll understand that I'd rather come back here after we defeat The Collector." He was helping them finish the portal so he could help them all get back, help them defeat the collector, but thinking of spending his time after that living in the human world.
He was probably thinking of his future for the first time in his life, thinking he might have one among humans, who have no magic ability, like him. In the human realm where book-smarts and theoretical knowledge are the standard, where he can excel as a lover of learning.
Sure he had a couple things that would have made him want to go back, too - but those things are people. And although being with the people you love (and who love you back) is good for you, I'm sure even he knows it's best to just hope they can visit each other (especially knowing they would if they could). The human world offered him a safe place, a home, and a mother who had spent months being able to prove to him he's worthy of parental affection.
Now, everyone says the death of flapjack means he won't see the human world as a home anymore, but I very strongly disagree. I think he's spent all this time thinking and realising Belos is the root of all his issues, and Belos killing flap only serves to teach him that the Boiling Isles aren't a bad place, and that he has a choice for his future in either world, so long as Belos is gone.
He didn't say "time to go home, Flap" because he no longer sees the human realm as a home, but rather because the Boiling Isles are also his home. He's probably going to go on a revenge mission and act a little off (I'd like to see him taking that route just for once and for the others to be on board tbh) - but Flap's murder isn't something that'll paint the human world as unsafe or not-home, the problem is Belos. His home is wherever Belos is not, and Belos evidently won't leave him alone. So, simply, once Belos is gone For Good, he can rest, find a home, and maybe even travel around, maybe recreate portal technology that's ethical and usable so he can explore even more because the whole universe can be his home (he spent his childhood practically locked up in his room, why wouldn't he want to go exploring? Maybe even with Lilith, his fellow nerd/historian! Actually I really love this idea and I'm going to think about it so much: not dadrius or camumla, but a secret third thing; cool aunt Lilith)
Sure, the little guy may choose to become an ambassador for humans/witches along with Luz and Gus in future, but first: he gets to finish school and carve a palisman and be part of a cool sports team and do all the dumb kid stuff he wasn't allowed to do. And he can do all that before he even has to think of a future, because I think actually he'd be able to see anywhere as home so long as Belos isn't around to hurt him. A boy whose world was so small, becoming a boy whose home becomes the whole universe. That's my take, at least!

I swear by my hateful father that Darius will explode with hatred for Philip when he sees the Hunter's new scars. I urgently need something cute and preferably by Dadrius to move away from the first series. The hunter even started sewing as his hobby. I hope he will teach Darius how to use a sewing machine. I also hope that this man is alive in principle. Dana has already taken one important part of the Hunter's happy life, and if she also takes one parent figure in his little traumatized life, I will open the fuck up.
