DT and His Appendicitis Scar: So When Did That Happen, Anyway?

I think I've mentioned in previous posts that I come across quite a few personal tidbits about a young DT while doing research for my sloooowly developing podcast. I think - well, I certainly hope! - I've also mentioned those sorts of tidbits are not going to be in the podcast? Well, if I haven't mentioned it before, I'm mentioning it now.

I see no reason to include these sorts of things because the podcast won't be about David's personal life (either then or now) but about his professional life. But while I tend to consider most of the theatre work he did between the time he entered the RSAMD Junior School at age 11 (and then got his Equity card and went on to drama school) and prior to his move to London in 1994 part of his professional life, technically they're really not -- because up until he took his first job in the 7:84 in 1991 for The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, he hadn't been earning a wage. And he's said in interviews Arturo was his first professional gig.

But I'm choosing to split hairs here. For the purposes of my podcast, I plan to treat his drama school years as if they were part of his professional career. I do this because I want to give them the same consideration and respect as the rest of his career, and feature them as the seminal experiences they were. They helped build the foundation of his professional life. Besides, he himself has said that attending drama school was essential for him to become the actor he wanted to be.

Because I consider them professional experiences (and because I'm acutely aware of his desire for privacy) the podcast will stay as much in the professional arena as I can possibly make it. He's talked quite a bit about this period of his life before, and I don't feel uncomfortable highlighting anything he's mentioned which happens to coincide with information I've discovered. Anything of a more personal nature which gets included in the podcast will have been measured against all of these factors before it gets added in. So all of that said, we come to an interesting bit of information about something David has definitely talked about and shared about it before - but which has no place in my podcast. So let's talk about it!

The lovely mizgnomer did a great little post a few years back which featured a photo set of David chatting about the near-death experience with appendicitis he had when he was a child (see below):

David's mentioned his appendix scar a few other times as well, and each time he speaks about it, the range of his age at the time of the attack varies by a few years - usually from age 8 to about 10. That's not surprising at all, of course, because for most of us, trying to narrow down some of the events in our childhood to specific time ranges can get a bit fuzzy. But I'm pretty sure I know when it happened.

Back in 1980, a society/organizational newspaper column entitled "Church News" appeared regularly in the Paisley Daily Express. This column often featured prominent figures in churches all over the community and were often framed as "One Week in the Working Life Of" these certain figures to debunk the myth that ministers only work on Sundays. One of these columns, published on 1 May 1980, featured a certain Rev. Sandy McDonald, the minister of St. Marks Oldhall.

That week, Sandy was busy recording a series of short services at his church which would later go out on STV. These were likely part of one of two religious television broadcasts he was a part of at the time: Late Call or That's The Spirit (both programs David has mentioned over the years).

The article goes on to document Sandy's busy week, speaking about his duties chairing festivals of praise and being principal speaker at church rallies and charity events. In between these duties, the article mentions, Sandy has to attend to all his pastoral duties, including meetings with his own church groups, and - and here is the important part - "visits to hospital patients (including his own son)."

The time at which this article was written implies one of Sandy's children was in the hospital in late April to early May of 1980. It's probably a safe bet to assume it was David: while it could have been either his elder brother or his elder sister, this does happen to fall pretty splendidly into the age range of "9 or 10" for his appendicitis scare which David has given in the past. David would have just turned 9 years old in mid-April of that year.

So there you have it. David was 9 years old when he suffered the bout of appendicitis - which burst, and brought him near death.

Thank goodness he made it!

Arturo wears contacts because he was originally given glasses but didn’t like how he looked in them

Min is always cold, she covers herself in sweaters and heated blankets to get warm

Master procrastinator, David, waits till the last moment to do/finish any project. Bad habit he can’t drop

Veronika can run and fully sprint in up to ten inch heels, she thought it was a skill she needed to have

J wasn’t allowed to get her hair dyed but she had gotten a friend to secretly give her streaks

Whits bed is covered in stuffed animals and pillows for extra softness and comfort

Nico, like a lot of people, will see a text from someone, say they’ll respond later , and then completely forget about it

DRDT CH2 Daily Life Protag Swap

Aight, I'mma be blunt about something.

As much as I love Teruko as a protagonist, after rewatching DRDT CH2 recently...she doesn't work as the protag in this scenario, at least not in the Daily Life portion.

Considering how annoying her constant distrust, while justified, can get, it makes her interactions with the characters very limited, and we can't learn too much about them because there are some things we don't get to see. She doesn't fit the Daily Life atmosphere, and it makes things feel less on edge and more pesturing at times. However, I think she works better as just the protag in Deadly Life. That's an environment where her personality feels more fitting. It's where she feels in place, where her distrust feels in place. It's where we truly see her shine as the protagonist.

You may be wondering where I'm going with this. Wellll, I actually thought about who I would choose to replace Teruko as the protagonist for the Daily Life. So, I'mma talk about that!

Would Not Work In Terms Of Daily Life's Environment, Current Roles, Or Just Their Character

(These are the characters who wouldn't work / I'm erasing the thought of immediately either because them as protag wouldn't feel right with the atmosphere, because of their current role in the story, or their character just not working as a protag.)

Ace - He wouldn't work as a protagonist at all, especially not in Daily Life. Yes, we see him very often, but the way he comes off in CH2 would not make things too pleasant. We already get enough distrust from Teruko, we don't need it more from Ace. The only way I could see it working is if it's before the scene where Nico attempts to kill Ace.

Arei - She's the victim of CH2, and so, it wouldn't make much sense to make this sudden change of her as the protagonist for Daily Life, only to hecking kill her off.

Arturo - Similar to Ace, Arturo's personality is not enjoyable, let alone during the CH2. We'd really only ever see him interacting with J or Veronika, which very much limits character screentime and interactions.

David - His role as being the possible antagonist is already out there. Plus, before episode 4 of CH2, we did not see this man for most of the chapter. His whole reveal also just throws the idea kinda out the window. He also just overall clashes with the Daily Life's environment.

Hu - We don't see Hu this much during CH2. Again, similarly with David, with how episode 11 of CH2 plays out, she isn't fit for the role entirely.

J - Similar to Arturo. Limited character interactions due the poor gal being followed by him for the majority of CH2.

Levi - He had a good appearance CH2 episode 1, and made an appearance in episode 2 of CH2. Other than that? He literally disappeared. He just wouldn't work considering he rarely saw him during this chapter at all.

Min - Died in CH1.

Rose - She appears a bit during CH2, but it's hard to picture how she'd work as a protagonist due the atmosphere. While she does show more signs of being more than just a tired artist, it's hard to pinpoint what would make her an enjoyable protag for Daily Life.

Xander - Died In CH1.

Would Be Possible, But Not Quite There

(These are the characters who could possibly make for good protag material during the daily life, but haven't fully hit the mark yet.)

Nico - They have a lot of screentime during CH2, and even contribute to some possibly interesting things to see in their POV, such as the fights in episode 4, as well seeing their perspective with Ace's attempted murder. However, they do also seem to be limited in character interactions, as the characters we only see them with most of the time are Teruko, Rose, or Ace, with David & Hu being minor ones that come out later on.

Veronika - She fits the environment of CH2's Daily Life quite well, as she is both dark yet silly. Seeing her perspective during the scene with her and Teruko at the playground, or her talk with Teruko about boredom could be really fun. Though, with how her personality is, in which she can be very creepy and sometimes borderline obsessive, she probably wouldn't be too enjoyable as time goes on.

Whit - We don't see him as much during this chapter, but it'd still be nice to see his perspective of things after CH1. How did he react to David's secret? What happened after Teruko and David left with their food? It'd be nice to see where he was, or what he thought during this chapter. Though, again, his character interactions could possibly be limited.

The Best Candiates

(They could take over the protagonist role easily, either because of their character, or because they have a role that could easily be slid into.)

The candiates are....BABABABA....Charles or Eden!

Okay, I know it's not surprising that these two would be the best options for a protag switch, but I'll explain em' separately!

Eden - She appears so much during CH2. Not only does Eden have a bunch of scenes that could be interesting to see her perspective of, but she has many character interactions we could get more of. Seeing her POV of where she went after Arei yelled at her, her POV of her and Teruko's talk during the end of episode 3, there would be much to go off of for her in terms of being a protagonist. She even fits the gloomy yet goofy environment too.

Charles - While he doesn't appear as much as he did in CH1, if anything, unlike other characters, that's what would make it work. We could get scenarios of his POV after the CH1 trial, see his perspective of his talk with Teruko during episode 3, learn what he and Whit were up to with the computers, etc. He also has some positive character development of being more open about working alongside others, which would make him as a protag more enjoyable than if it were Teruko's constant distrust.

@asongofstarkandtargaryen Me watching casually an advertaising on the TV of a new soap opera (I will not watch it because it will be very long and an episode airing daily almost every afternoon) then reading the plot and finding that the main pairing and their relationship is basically a Character swap AU of Julio and Alicia from Gran Hotel, but instead of 1905 it's 1913.

Synopsis: "1913. The whole world is on the brink of the abyss, but there are havens of peace isolated from conflicts. Like the La Promesa Palace, in the Los Pedroches valley, owned by the Marquises of Luján, one of the largest landowners in the country.

The day the Palace is preparing to celebrate the wedding of the heir, Tomás (Jordi Coll), is interrupted by the appearance of an airplane that attracts everyone's attention. In some kind of sense also La Promesa is something like Downton Abbey and Gran Hotel had a child together in a soap opera format😂 (Also Gran Hotel and La Promesa both are from Bambú Producciones)

WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE :

the idea started small. the first person to float it envisioned a few local quidditch players on a local quidditch pitch, tickets for a galleon and a tacky, plastic trophy enchanted to sing something annoying for the winning team to take home. they didn't know it at the time, but someone at that meeting knew someone who knew someone, and eventually, their idea for something small to raise some humble funds for some good causes snowballed into something much, much larger. by the time the minister of magic and his wife pledged their personal funds to sponsor a team each and some BIG NAMES in the industry had started to reply postively to their owls, the group organising the game had realised they were going to need to do something truly spectacular to make it worth everyone's time - and against all odds, they've managed it. the HOGSMEADE HIPPOGRIFFS are sponsored by eulalia karkaroff, madam rosmerta of the three broomsticks and the wizarding wireless network. they'll be playing in green and under the guidance of fabius watkins of the montrose magpies, and all the money that they raise is going to st mungo's hospital.

neither team will be entering the league, of course, but the wix on each have gotten a hell of a lot of good press in the last couple of weeks for taking the time out of their busy lives to partake - regardless of the key fact that no one on either team actually chose which team they were going to be placed on. THAT was all down to the luck of the draw, quite literally. so many people answered the call that they ultimately got pulled out of an actual hat - or at least, that's what organisers are going to be saying in the opening interviews with the wwn. a few of the participants might've had an edge on many of the others, but for the most part, they managed to do it fairly. the burren quidditch grounds themselves aren't used for much outside of the quidditch league, but are kept maintained year round by a dedicated staff. the sports department of the ministry of magic organised everything down to the ministry ran security, the surrounding campgrounds and which wixen businesses, exactly, got invited to set up food and beverage booths for the duration of the event. wix could buy low level tickets for 5 galleons apiece with the prices increasing, depending on how high the rows are ( or how private the area is ). camping spaces for anyone who wants to stay overnight - be it because it justifies the traveling or because they want to stay for the rowdy post match celebrations - can be rented for an additional fee, though wix also have the choice of booking a room at any of the surrounding muggle towns. it started small, but by the time march 1st rolled around, the charity quidditch game between the hogsmeade hippogriffs and diagon dragons has already put itself in the history books !

OUT OF CHARACTER :

our first ever - and i'm sure a lot of people set to benefit from the generosity of the organisers hope one of many - charity quidditch game hits the dash and takes us back to ireland ! the burren quidditch grounds were last used for the 2020 uk & ireland quidditch final and is a pitch that a few of our players are overly familiar with, given that the holyhead harpies were the winners of that particular league ( though non players in either game might remember the hangovers they nursed in the days following the win, with the surrounding grounds being party central night of ) ! quidditch mightn't be everyone's cup of tea, but there's no denying the fun to be found in the build up to a big game or the fun to be had after it's all said and done, with one team celebrationg their win and the other commiserating their loss ! even if the point of this particular game is to raise money for two good causes, there's nothing that says people can't have a good time while doing it. you're welcome to throw anyone in wherever you'd like, with the first half of our event covering the pre game and our second half - to be led into at the end of the first week - covering the afters !

this event starts with the posting of this message and will run for two weeks, ending on the 18th of march, though it will transition to the celebration half of the quidditch match on the 10th ! you'll be reminded in the discord, when this happens !

no character is required to attend this event and you are not required to take part, but you are heavily encouraged to find a reason to do so ! whether your character is into sports or not, the social aspect of the game and the following celebrations are not to be denied !

both halves of this event will be hybrid, and starters can be posted on the dash or in the discord depending on your preference ! if you're hitting the dash, you can tag with nox.event040 and nox.charitygame ! the location for anyone who tags it is the burren, ireland.
