First there was a protest against Femicide in Kenya that American news media barely covered. Now there was a protest in Honduras that was barely mentioned.
February 7, 2024
Dressed in black as a sign of mourning, about 300 women marched on Thursday in Tegucigalpa to the National Congress, on Honduran Women’s Day, to protest the increase in femicides.
“We come to demand that the lives of Honduran women be respected, that’s why we come to this National Congress,” an activist who covered her face and hair with black scarves said through a megaphone.
The police placed barriers around Congress as a new legislative period began with the attendance of President Xiomara Castro, but the protesters managed to jump over them and reach the lower part of the building.
“We are marching today against all violence, from domestic violence to femicide. We demand the approval of the Comprehensive Law against Violence that the president promised; we can’t wait,” said Sandra Deras.
According to the Women’s Rights Center, violence against women is on the rise in Honduras. In the first 15 days of 2024, at least 16 women were murdered (according to preliminary police reports there were 15).
According to the National Autonomous University of Honduras’ Violence Observatory, 380 femicides were registered in 2023, compared to 308 in 2022.
According to UN Women data, Honduras is the fifth country with the highest rate of femicides in the world, 6.47 per every 100,000 inhabitants, making it the most dangerous country for women in Latin America.
Congress established January 25 as Honduran Women’s Day because, on that date in 1955, women were granted the right to vote and participate in the country’s political life.

Prompt 25 - Bathroom
@jegulus-microfic January 25 Word count 979
Previous part First part
Regulus had disappeared into the gloomy house. But James could guess where he’d gone. There was only one room in this entire house where any of them could stay for more than a few minutes, and that was the kitchen.
He found them all crowded around the table. Sirius looked grumpy. Remus was pinching the bridge of his nose. And Regulus was cackling at something he must have said. They hadn’t even lasted a minute before one was winding the other up.
“What did he say?” James asked Remus, thinking he’d get the straightest answer from him.
“That he was sorry you were late but that you’d spent the afternoon on the sofa one step away from shagging.” Remus said matter of factly. James couldn’t hold in the groan that escaped him.
“Reg, what did I say before we came in?”
“Not to rile him up.” He looked at James angelically. “But in my defence, he did ask.” James wandered over and pecked him on the cheek.
“You know that’s not what he meant, love.” He raised an eyebrow, imitating Regulus’s patented look.
“Oh, so this is just happening now, then?” Sirius gestured towards them both, interrupting their moment. Regulus glowered at Sirius.
“Yes. So deal with it.”
“So, not just a one-night stand?” He said, glowering back just as fiercely.
“Not that it’s any of your business, Sirius. But just for your information, nothing even happened last night. We kissed out in the garden and then went up to James’s bedroom and slept.” He narrowed his eyes. “Happy now?” Sirius didn’t look overly happy.
“I suppose at least now I don't have to kill James.” He said nonchalantly as he leaned back in his chair as though completely at ease.
“Hey, what the hell, Sirius? You were plotting my demise?” James feigns outrage. `this was how Sirius and he sorted things out.
“What can I say, big fella, bro’s before hoe’s.” Remus snorted, setting them all off into fits of giggles.
“Okay, let's start eating the food before it goes cold,” Remus said, wiping his eyes as he took the bags from James’s hands while Regulus grabbed plates and cutlery from the draw.
They sat down and enjoyed the meal, laughing back and forth like normal.
They were so close to being finished when Sirius opened his big mouth.
“You should be thanking me, you know. If it wasn’t for me literally dragging you out of here yesterday, Reggie. You wouldn’t have whatever this is.” James stood up before Regulus could retaliate. They’d bicker for a bit, and he’d stop them, but they needed to get a few jabs in at each other before they’d let him.
“Just popping to the bathroom,” He told Regulus when he looked over at him mid-jibe.
“Yeah, and if it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t have even been allowed in his house.” James winced. That was a sore spot for Sirius, and Regulus knew it. Sirius’s parents had tried to disinherit him when he came out, and Regulus had said they’d have to disinherit him as well.
Of course, Walburga and Orion hadn’t taken that well, so the Black brothers had gathered a few belongings and left together that night.
James stopped. He’d gotten lost in his thoughts, remembering the night Sirius turned up on his parent's doorstep, dragging Regulus along behind him, and gotten turned around in the vast house. It didn’t help that everything looked the same, gloomy and old.
He wandered up and down, opening and closing each door, unable to find what he was looking for.
“Lost?” A familiar voice whispered in his ear, and for the second time that day, James had his arse grabbed, and he jumped into the air, squealing.
“Christ, Reg!” He yelped. Regulus gained at him cheekily, taking his hand and pulling him towards the right door.
When James reemerged from the bathroom, Regulus grabbed his hand again and pulled him up the next flight of stairs, and into a room James had never been into before. Regulus’s bedroom. He’d been in Sirius’s hundreds of times—it was chaos. Regulus’s, on the other hand, was neat and orderly.
Why did you bring me in here?” James asked as he picked up a photo frame with a picture of Regulus and Sirius at the beach. He thought it was a really sweet photo until he saw what was in the background.
“Seriously, Reg. All the photos from that day, and you frame the one of me being attacked by a seagull?!”
“It’s a nice picture of Sirius and I. It’s hardly my fault that you decided to fight a seagull at the exact moment it was taken.” He smirked at James, eyes crinkling. “And to answer you’re previous question. 1. I’m returning the favour from yesterday. You showed me yours, and I’m showing you mine. 2. I’m keeping you up here long enough for Sirius to think we’re up to no good.” He told James as he checked his reflection in the mirror. James let out an exasperated sigh.
“Are you actually trying to see how much it takes to make your brother’s head explode?” He asked, already knowing the answer Regulus was going to give.
“Yes!” He grinned mischievously, pushing his sleeve up and checking his watch. “I think it’s been long enough. Let's go back down.” He reached up and kissed James deeply, bruisingly. Running his fingers through James’s hair, making it stand up. When they broke apart, Regulus looked over James’s bruised, spit-wet lips, slightly flushed complexion and wild hair and nodded.
“What was that?” James narrowed his eyes, feeling that Regulus was plotting something.
“Nothing. Just wanted to kiss you.” Regulus said, brushing his fingers through James’s hair again. James sighed, not entirely placated. But he was sure he’d find out what Regulus was up to once they went downstairs.

Oyster shuckers at Apalachicola, Fla.
Record Group 102: Records of the Children's BureauSeries: National Child Labor Committee Photographs taken by Lewis Hine
Oyster shuckers at Apalachicola, Fla. This work is carried on by many young boys during the busy seasons. This is a dull year so only a few youngsters were in evidence.
Black and white photograph of about a dozen African-American men and adolescents on a large pile of oyster shells. Most sit on stools or overturned buckets.  The oysters are piled against a large barn-like structure. A train car is visible in the background.

Ladies today do something just for you or your education.
A Room Of One’s Own Day is a momentous occasion that falls on January 25 each year, and we’re going to help you celebrate. Do you know that the book by Virginia Woolf which was the inspiration behind this holiday is more than 93 years old? A Room Of One’s Own Day celebrates the privacy of having one’s own room and is also symbolic of independence. It also reminds us that it is the privileged who have their own rooms and that we can appreciate and look after what we have. It also reminds us of the ongoing struggle for females to receive an education.
HISTORY OF A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN DAY
Adeline Virginia Woolf, one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century, was born on March 25, 1882. She was the seventh of eight children born to Julia Prinsep Jackson and Leslie Stephen. Her father is said to have been the one who inspired Woolf to take up writing as a profession.
Woolf began writing in 1900. In 1912, she married Leonard Woolf, and the couple set up the Hogarth Press, which would in the future be the publishing house that released most of Woolf’s works. Her written works are said to be the inspiration behind modern-day feminist movements, and it continues to inspire young women to be independent. Though Woolf has written several masterpieces, her most famous essay is “A Room Of One’s Own” which came out in 1929. It dealt mainly with the lack of freedom of expression of women in those times. It advocated access to education for women. This novel played a key role in inspiring the feminist movements of the 1970s.
Though the exact origins of A Room Of One’s Own Day are not known, this day has been celebrated annually by millions as a day to celebrate independence and self-sustainability. Some might take the day in a literal way and celebrate it by decorating one’s own room or simply enjoying the comfort and privacy of one’s own room. Others might take it figuratively and observe this day by shutting the metaphorical door to things they are no longer interested in and celebrating independence.

Read a good book about women. Many of the rights and freedoms today’s women enjoy are new. Read a good book about the struggle and the amazing women who led the fight.

WHY A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN DAY IS IMPORTANT
It allows us to appreciate the freedom of having our own room. Having a room of our own is a luxury that we often take for granted. Many people in this world either don’t have a roof over their heads or are sharing a house with others. This day allows us to appreciate the luxury of having our own rooms.
It is symbolic of independence. A Room of One's Own Day is symbolic of standing on our own and being independent. This day figuratively reminds us to have our rooms, that is, to be self-sufficient and not be dependent on others.
It reminds us to close the doors to things that are detrimental to our well-being. A Room of One's Own Day is a reminder that we need to close the door to people, and also things, that are toxic and hinder our growth and success. It is a day to be introspective and clear out the junk from your metaphorical “room”.
