For her graduation, Juleka's mother throws her a party in a secret location beneath the streets of Paris, but it can be dangerous to stumble through the dark underground corridors alone. To remedy this, especially for her most klutzy friend, Luka is sent to escort her down.

After having not seen her old friend of a year, Marinette is more than happy to catch up with him as they venture underground, pleased that he hasn't changed from what she remembers. But a single dance and a few choice words make her realize that she missed him more than she usually would and may be hoping for something more than being just friends.

Do I ever! Some of these have already been recced in my AU rec list, but since this isn't part of my "undiscovered gems" series, I'm going to let myself rec all of the popular enemies to lovers fic I've been enjoying too 😊

A Series of Meets: Reach by @damagectrlwrites

Paris is safe, except from the rivalry of its two superhero guardians: Ladybug and Chat Noir.  Since they were teenagers, the two have raced around Paris, trying to out do-good each other.

After Chat Noir saves a bus of people from falling into the Seine before Ladybug can even get there, Adrien is in high spirits.  He helps a young woman reach some chips high on a shelf, kicking off a friendly conversation that ends with a coffee date.

It’s a terrible day for Marinette.  First she had a hectic day at work, then Chat Noir gets all the praise for saving a bus of people, and then she nearly topples over trying to reach some chips.  At the very least, a nice guy helps her and asks her to coffee. Surely, things will get better, right?

Ladynoir Enemies AU. Never met AU. This one is absolutely amazing and hilarious and YOU NEED TO READ IT!! Ladybug and Chat Noir are superhero rivals, always trying to outdo each other, and being annoyed at the other. Marinette and Adrien get a meet-cute and fall in love. The juxtaposition is perfect and ridiculous and THAT IDENTITY REVEAL OMG.

Dearly despised, (I love you) by @snacc-noir

Marinette could go on about why she hated Adrien Agreste—to his pranking tendencies to ineffable attractiveness—ever since he had the audacity that day with the umbrella.

And yet, here she was fake-dating him while in love with a superhero.

Adrienette Enemies AU. Warning: This is a WIP! But it's so much fun. Basically Adrien and Marinette never sorted out the misunderstanding with the gum and instead just dug themselves deeper and deeper in hate with their miscommunications. Meanwhile ladynoir are totally in love with each other. Add in a whole bunch of sexual tension and seeing just where the author teases out these missed chances and it's beautiful.

When Adrien agreed to this line of work, he thought all his focus would be on the job of catching the elusive Lady Luck. It never crossed his mind that someone else would catch his attention.

Ladynoir Enemies AU. Although this is a ladynoir enemies AU, this dynamic change bleeds into all of the different sides of the love square and it's so different and interesting! I loved how the changes made actually affected other aspects. The story feels very real and believable.

Ladynoir Enemies AU.  The enemies dynamic here is AMAZING!! Adrien is so in character even when he’s a “bad guy”, and the backstory of how he ended up working with Hawkmoth is perfect. (Also, how is Gabriel even worse??) I love the way the identities are played with, and especially the repercussions of Chat working for Hawkmoth on what Adrien is allowed to do.

Heart pounding, Chat pins Marinette’s wrists to the balcony. She stares up at him, her blue eyes kaleidoscopic from the lights hanging overhead, her features twisted into a scowl.

“Why are you trying to take my Miraculous?” Chat hisses.

“Because—you—I—” Marinette splutters, her eyes dipping down below Chat’s face. “Why is your suit unzipped?”

“I—well…” Chat sighs. “My zipper got stuck.”

Ladynoir Enemies AU featuring Marichat. I'm an absolute sucker for villain!Chat who just needs someone who's willing to care for and believe in him. And, even as a villain, he's still so recognizably Adrien here. My hearttttt!

To his credit, he genuinely sounded a little remorseful. She even resented him a little for it, because she had so much more to lose than he did, but he just wanted to stay in Daddy’s good books.

She grimaced. Marriage, for one year, they agreed. And a painful few months of “courtship” to convince the press of the authenticity of their “marriage”.

In eighteen months, her father would be hale and hearty, and she’d divorce Adrien Agreste and be nothing more than his business partner.

(...In which Gabriel is an asshole, Adrien is trying and Marinette's stubborn but gives in eventually.)

This is a 2-part series that isn’t finished and that I desperately hope is continued. It’s not EXACTLY enemies AU per se, but it hits the same sweet spot. Ladynoir are in love, but can’t be together. Adrienette are forced to marry because of circumstances and Marinette resents Adrien for it. It’s got Enemies to Friends to Lovers vibes, even if we haven’t gotten that last part yet, and I love it!

Sort of a Never Met AU in that Adrien doesn't start attending school until after he's been a villain for some time and after he's gotten to know (and fallen for) Marinette as Chat. I love it when Chat's a villain and his love for Marinette/Ladybug helps him make better choices!

In another world, he loves her. Would lay down his life for her without a second thought. Would be devoted only to her. In another world, they are partners, fighting side by side to keep Paris safe from Hawkmoth. Ladybug and Chat Noir, heroes of Paris. Below you will find some incredible fics written by insanely talented individuals in which some (if not all) of the fic was written in 2020. Rather than give a summary of each piece, I basically just gush about why I love them and why you’ll love them too.

new marinette by maketea @rosekasa Complete-3 Chapters/Teen/12,323 words This is a story for people who are okay with having their hearts torn apart and then stitched back together. It will hurt you—but in the best possible way—and you will thank the author when you’re done. Marinette has amnesia and doesn’t remember her relationship with Adrien, but it doesn’t stop her from loving him. What really makes this fic so special is all the tiny details that make it come alive. It had so many sweet and soft domestic moments and the way it portrays characters falling in love is so heartbreakingly beautiful, you can’t turn away once you’ve started.

Those Benevolent Stars by peachcitt @peachcitt Incomplete-2/3 Chapters/Gen/14,012 words I would probably sell my soul for the final chapter of this fic (coming soon!) It follows soulmate-less Adrien who sees the world in various shades of grey finally seeing color when his house is being robbed by a thief who calls herself Ladybug. The relationship developing between them is so push-and-pull, Ladybug tries to keep the distance between them but even she can’t stay away. Seeing the world through Adrien’s eyes—getting to experience color for the first time with him—is incredible. Adrien is an artist who’s always been told which colors to paint where, but seeing him finally having the knowledge and freedom to express himself with color in a way he’s always been denied is stunning. The writing is absolutely gorgeous, each emotion described so viscerally it’s impossible to not fall in love alongside him.

comfort food by Reiaji Oneshot/Gen/9,715 words Marinette and Adrien cooking together has never been expressed so beautifully. Once you start reading, you are basically incapable of stopping, each scene flows so easily into the next (and there’s some lovely art interspersed throughout!) Every one of Marinette and Adrien’s interactions is written so truthfully and lovingly, the relationship that develops over 9.7k words is so natural you feel like you’re falling with them. This piece showcases Adrien so excited to learn while also incorporating some failures and not shying away from the emotions cooking side-by-side brings out in both of them. The writing is like poetry, so evocative and imbued with details that make it impossible to not fall as deeply into the story as possible—you just melt into it. It’s the kind of story where reading certain lines will make you actually tingle and you wonder if the writer can see inside your mind.

Chapter 3 of A Series of Meets : A Collection of One-Shots - Love Square: Reach (LadyNoir/Adrienette) - February 14, 2020 by damagectrl @damagectrlwrites Oneshot/Teen/12,674 words This is a series of oneshots (as the title suggests) and they’re all long enough to be full stories in their own right. I would honestly recommend reading all of them, but this one in particular is my favorite from this year. Ladybug and Chat Noir are both the saviors of Paris, but they have a serious rivalry between them due to how Paris recognizes their good deeds and their styles of heroing. Marinette and Adrien meet at the grocery store when he helps her reach a bag of chips from the top shelf. So I’m just...such trash for good meet-cute. And this is definitely one of the cutest. The romantic relationship that builds between Marinette and Adrien is so playful and fun and beautiful and the way it contrasts the competitive edge in Ladybug and Chat Noir’s relationship is incredibly well-written. It straddles the line of ugh-I-hate-my-coworker and begrudging-respect really perfectly. And the ending is just ahhh, magnificent.

Come Roses, Come Thorns by emilieee @e-milieeee Incomplete-9/? Chapters/Not Rated/30,904 words I really adore fairytale AUs and there have been some Beauty and the Beast ones in the past, but they never really felt true to character to me. They often have Chat Noir be cruel or harsh and that’s just not a characterization I jive with. This story takes a completely different approach. Chat Noir is still under a curse and Marinette still takes her father’s place in the castle, but he’s never vindictive or rude to her. Everyone in the castle except for Marinette is inflicted with the curse and it strips them of their memories, so rather than feel like everyone is hiding information from Marinette, it feels more like a mystery we get to solve alongside her. She also meets a beautiful golden-haired boy in the night and we’re left to wonder about his connection to the rest of the castle. The story is anchored by some of the most beautiful descriptions you will ever read (seriously, I want the author to narrate my life, it’s gorgeous) and a page-turning plot. 

Margins of Error by merridiem Oneshot/Teen/2,238 words Told through Adrien’s perspective, we get to see a conversation about love between Chat Noir and Ladybug. The way Adrien’s structured life and his predictable studies of physics and calculus contrast the anomaly that is Ladybug and the impossibly deep feelings he has for her is brilliant. Their conversation feels hauntingly honest, and when Ladybug finally asks the question “Do you want me to show you how I think they should write our kiss?” you’re blushing and sputtering just about as much as Chat Noir is.

state of grace by dragonsinparis @dragonsinparis Incomplete-10/? Chapters/Teen/42,964 words For those of you who are fandom grandparents like I am, you might remember this fic from when it began way back in 2016. After not being updated since 2017, another brilliant chapter came out this past April. And I completely flipped my shit for it. Chat Noir is fatally wounded during battle and Ladybug risks everything by going into the underworld to save him. This story has some of the most incredible world building you will ever find, and a Ladynoir dynamic that is so ride-or-die you can’t help becoming emotionally invested. 

the way you said “i love you” by bakerblake Incomplete-8/? Chapters/Gen/9,484 words A lovely collection of the Lovesquare confessing their love to each other. Literally, just the first chapter/prompt absolutely wrecked me, I have to consciously space out my readings of this fic because otherwise I will die of how breathtakingly perfect it is.

i'm out of my head and i know that you're scared (because hearts get broken) by serendiptitty @multibug Incomplete-18/? Chapters/Teen/49,629 words This is a streamer/long distance friendship AU and while I have literally 0 experience in the gaming/streaming community, it definitely rings true for my long-distance friendships. The buildup in Chat Noir/Ladybug’s relationship is so realistic (and BOY the amount of times Adrien tries to convince himself he doesn’t have romantic feelings for Ladybug absolutely killed me, rip, I was too young to die.) I can be really picky about chat fics, but what I love about this one is how it combines chat text (over discord) to standard prose/dialogue. The transition is effortless and gives us the most complete view of the story, with all the messy emotions and real-life difficulties that make Miraculous Ladybug fanfiction great.

We Break Down, To Make Up by BreG21 Oneshot/Teen/10,796 words An alternate ending to Chat Blanc, when Marinette is threatened to break up with Adrien by Gabriel Agreste, she confides in her partner. They work together to beat Gabriel at his own game and it’s a joy to watch. I love that this fic has all the fluff and goodness I crave in a fic without hesitating to explore the implications of their plan. It focuses on Marinette and Adrien’s relationship, but it still portrays very in-character interactions with their friends and family and the way Marinette and Adrien manipulate the media to their advantage is extremely fun to watch. It’s a really lovely telling of “what if?” that I too had been craving since Chat Blanc aired and the perfect to reread after a long day.

There have, of course, been lots of other incredible fics updated in 2020, these are just some of my favorites. But I encourage you all to make your own rec lists!

The question surprises me.

It is not so much the question, though, it is the word 'friends'.

I don’t know… I am not used to having friends. I… I don’t think I am… someone easy to befriend. Or to remain friends with. That is what I want Katara to understand.

It is scary for me, and I clench my fist in the jacket on my arms to ease the anxiety.

I don’t want you to become disappointed in me, I think. I don’t want you to think I am not good enough.

I stay silent, overthinking, and I leave Katara’s question unanswered. (Not that I think it would have been much better if I spoke.)

Disappointment and hurt wear her features down, making her face almost as dark as the night. My fist clenches harder.

“I consider you my friend.”

My eyes dart back up to her after her words, but it is too late. She already left for her tent.

This is from one of the latest chapters of my Avatar!Zuko AU, Book One: Wind. I like it because I made a great effort to portray Zuko's mental health and his feelings for Katara and friendship in general, but it also shows Katara's sincere wish to be friends with Zuko. I'm trying to make them just two teens that happened to have a sort-of instant, not explicitly romantic, but that are trying to form a bond despite the circumstances they are in. Say... like that semi-crush you have on one of your friends but still keeping things strictly platonic? Keeping them platonic for now? 😅

I: Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)?

I don't know if it counts as guilty pleasure, but I kinda have a thing for dark!fics. I have never gotten to write one, but I really like exploring deep topics and their possible outcomes if inserted in an already existing story.

And also, if done right, on-and-off relationships.

S: Any fandom tropes you can’t resist?

I think enemies to lovers and mutual pining are kind of no-brainers here 😅, but also the mistaken by a couple/she's not my girlfriend (he's not my boyfriend) trope. Can you tell from where I got it? 😅😅😅

Oh, and you know that trope of 'Character A has lots of scars and Character B gently caressing them and Character A is nervous and shaking and more because they don't know how to react to affection'? Yeah, I'll eat that up any day at any time.

@damagectrlwrites: The author of one of my first Zutara fics, which has remained as one of my faves till today, Dancing in the Dark. I love the way they write Zuko and Katara, the emotions are so vivid, and the way the characters feelings develop is realistic and sweet 💖

@markedmage: The writing in Mage's fics is very fluent and soft and you follow so effortlessly while reading! The choices of words is also stellar!! 💖

theadamantdaughter: I know they deleted their blog and their writing from AO3, but theirs was really one of the best Zutara fluff I've seen 💖

The war of conquest comes to a crashing halt when the death of Azulon puts brother against brother, with anti-war Iroh claiming victory. A young Zuko escapes capture and flees to the former colonies, hiding out for ten years, evading his uncle’s men.

While Zuko was prepared for any Fire Nation detectives and soldiers after him, he finds himself grossly unprepared for a waterbending prodigy turned bounty hunter who has yet to fail to bring in her target.

Notes: Chapter 2 and both are disappointed in each other.   Sorry for the delay; life is emotionally draining and I’m a bit busy right now as such.  At the very least, this is only 3 chapters.  One more to go!

November 8th - “Snake in the City” (Viperionette)

When there is trouble in Paris, Luka helps save the day as Viperion, a member of Chat Noir’s team of Miraculous heroes. During a particular battle, Viperion pulls a young woman out of harm’s way and finds himself taken by her kind and protective nature. Every. Single. Time.

However, while he’s taken with her after a series of meets over the course of one rewound battle, as far as she is concerned, she’s only met Viperion once. Knowing he’s unable to tell her who he really is, he resigns himself to never really knowing the girl.

Except Marinette Dupain-Cheng won’t just let her knight in a snake costume go without a fight. When Viperion appears to save the day, she begins to appear to catch a glimpse and he tries to put a stop to it before she gets hurt.

As she readies herself for the end, Paris’ favorite cat themed hero appears in front of her for the first time. Neither know it then, but his days of fighting alone are coming to an end.

Chapter 13 of my very first Miraculous Ladybug fanfic that I haven’t updated in over a year because I decided to write a bunch of one-shots for fun and practice.   Now, I’m trying to finish it before the end of May because I just want it done.  It won’t get done until I sit down and write it, so here we are.

The moment Emilie Agreste watched her precious only son collide with one of her husband’s new employees, she knew that they were made for each other. And while it wasn’t as if she thought Adrien couldn’t get a girlfriend on his own, it didn’t seem likely that he’d pursue this particular girl.

With her papillon dog, Marguerite, at her side and Nathalie helping orchestrate her plans, Emilie embarks on a not so secret mission to not only introduce Adrien to budding designer Marinette Dupain-Cheng, but to set up their romance and secure herself (and a somewhat concerned Gabriel) a daughter-in-law.
