RU NYC Crew 📷: @ebzden ✨ WEDNESDAY, JULY 7, 6-8 PM: STORYING CLOSING RECEPTION & PERFORMANCES ✨ Andrew Freedman Home, 1125 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY  ✨ 🚇 B, D, 4 to 167th Street ✨ FREE and open to the public. 🌺 Please join us for the closing reception of Storying with performances by exhibiting artists Damali Abrams the Glitter Priestess, Elvira Clayton, Zachary Fabri and Helina Metaferia. 🌟 Performances will begin on the front grounds of the Andrew Freedman Home with Rice and Cotton Hands, an audience engagement work by Elvira Clayton. Expanding on the research of his temporal installation Jimmy's Hands, Zachary Fabri invites visitors to experience a new sound score performed in the interiors of the Andrew Freedman Home. On the lawn, Helina Metaferia will facilitate a participatory performance, which considers embodiment, intimacy, and vitality in our current screen-dependent, tech-obsessed era. The evening will close inside the exhibition where Damali Abrams the Glitter Priestess, embodying Afro-Caribbean expressions of the Divine Femme, will collage alternate realities live to The Glitter Priestess 90s Girl Reparations Playlist. ✨ Storying is organized as part of the 2021 NYC-Based Artist Residency Program. Through oral histories, the epistolary form, ritual vessels and a performative time capsule of our current moment, the works in the exhibition recall lesser-known events and accounts that have yet to be written through processes that yield solidarity while honoring the past. Curated by Minkie English, this exhibition will be at Corridor Gallery, located at 334 Grand Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11238. As we journey through life we are forced to face, or hide, our wounds. Our traumas, which are the results of physical and psychopathological phenomena threatens our mind, body, and spirit-our wholeness and existence-leaving us unbalanced, even on a cellular level. Healing is about connectivity, physically and/or meta-physically. It is our reconciliation of our ephemeral and unforgiving reality. Healing and its complexities can be arduous at times and undeniably poetic during others. It is an ode to our existence and our presence in the here-and-now. Like an ode, healing is an exalted and inspiring journey guided intensely by emotions. It is the light that enters the wound, 'fostering positive opportunities for self-knowledge, growth and resilience'. An Ode to Healing: A Poetic Exhibition for Those in Recovery is a lyrical poem for those in recovery from the challenges they are forced, and/or choose, to face; recognizing and celebrating the process of achieving wholeness. Eight artists-five visual artists and three performance artists-whose work has continued to uplift and heal others are featured in this exhibition. I'm super excited to share this project about artists in Southeast Queens, and so grateful to all of the artists who shared their oral histories with me. #linkinbio (Super long post warning⚡.) This piece was created during the quarantine lockdown so we had to use Zoom, snail mail and email to get it done. Women's Studio Workshop has been so supportive, with @chrismpetrone handmaking these gorgeous paper sleeves based on email communications and making them more beautiful than I could have imagined. The graphic designer @zaldi.var was also able to perfectly capture my vision for the aesthetic of the scroll. Next up is a short documentary funded by @qnsarts about Southeast Queens artists. This research was originally used to create a collage for @jamaica_flux that was exhibited at The Colloseum mall, and at Andrew Freedman Home for my @residencyunlimited Residency. #abundance 🎥 📒 🖤 Reposted from @wsworkshop A Brief People’s Art History of Southeast Queens is an alphabetical art history of artist @damaliabrams Southeast Queens neighborhood.
