A story about being petty

Now, for this story we need to go back. I remember I was in fifth grade, and my mom was my Physical Education teacher since I was in kindergarten. As you may have guessed this meant that I was...allowed certain privileges.

Another important note is that there was this one other girl in my class that I hated. She was popular, everyone wanted to be her friend and boys wanted her as a girlfriend. I suppose from my history of being bullied and teased by my classmates I was rather jealous of her, but that is another story. Let’s call her Sue for this story

I remember it was the last week of school and the school rewarded their fifth graders by giving each one a ‘special prize’. The exciting part of the whole thing was that each morning of that week they would draw 10 names from a cup, and those 10 would be announced over the intercom. The winners would get to leave class and collect their prizes. The task fell to my mother to draw the names the day before. Naturally my mom let ME draw the names so I had the insider advantage to know who won. Being the responsible child I was I decided to have my name be called very last as to show I was not ‘cheating’.

Day 1, everything went without a hitch. The first 10 winners of course had first pick of the prizes and I felt some joy knowing I somehow caused this. I went to the gym after school and began to draw the names for the next day winners so the office had everything ready to go. All was well until I picked Sue’s name. I felt a sense of ‘this bitch wins again’ and it made me awful. Not in a ‘feel bad’ way but in a ‘I cannot believe’ way.

That is when an idea hit me, a terrible, horrible idea. I looked around to see if mom had come back yet, then put her name BACK IN THE JAR and picked someone else’s name. It felt right. The next morning went similar to the morning before and I felt joy for those who one. Same thing again, I went to the gym after school and picked names again. There is was, Sue’s name again. Now everyone has that Angel/Demon sitting on their shoulders debating on what was right and wrong. I didn’t have that growing up, so again I put her name back in the jar and picked another name.

The next morning the morning announcements went on and 10 more winners were called. I could hear Sue from the other side of the class room when she said “I can’t believe I haven't won anything yet!” and I remember just looking to her with a confused look on my face being all ‘yea I know it’s crazy huh’ knowing damn well why she had not won anything.

It went on like this until Friday, when it was our turn to ‘win’. I felt satisfaction in knowing that finally, for once Sue was not going to beat me. I developed a God complex over picking fucking names out of a jar at 10 years old and I never felt more alive than I did that day.
