#dan and phil crafts analysis
Text
okay buckle the fuck up because I've got a lot to say and not much time to say it.
the central theme and purpose of dan and phil crafts, at least in my opinion, boils down to trust.
the trust that they have for eachother and have had for years, and the trust they place in us as an audience.
for example, the sheer amount of trust that (crafts) phil had to have in (crafts) dan to let him sacrifice him multiple times, and believe that he would be able to successfully complete the ritual and bring him back to life, in a way mirroring the fact that (real) phil willingly went back into the closet after living somewhat openly as a gay man for several years in university, for the sole purpose of letting (real) dan process his sexuality in his own time, therefore "sacrificing" that part of himself for a time and trusting that dan would eventually get to a point where he would be more comfortable being out.
PART II: THE HAND HOLD
of course, now in the present day with both of them firmly out of the closet, having lived together for over a decade and built their "forever home" from the ground up, they understand the implications that can be drerrived from their more "coupley" actions, especially knowing how the phandom used to be.
if you have been in this fandom for any sizable amount of time you might remember how any "sighting" of them possibly holding hands was prone to much speculation and excitement,
images such as the ones presented below were posted and reblogged many times, with varying amounts validity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[images taken from pinterest as I couldn't find the original posts, if you know who posted these please do let me know]
so, them standing front and centre, unabashedly holding hands symbolises this new era that we have been entering since the revival of dan and phil games, this era of acceptance and the trust that they are placing in us as an audience by letting us see a bit more of this side of them.
"we know you know" and all that.
so then, devotion, to a god, to an influential online figure, or of course devotion to a partner.
and what is devotion if not trust? and then again what is trust if not love.
thank you for coming to my ted talk, I have no idea if this makes sense to anyone else, I wrote this whole thing in about 15 minutes while slightly delirious from the heatwave currently boiling my whole city alive.
so long and thanks for all the fish
-fagus.

As you may have seen in a previous post by collaborator @danandfuckingjonlmao we are currently looking for artists who want to explore the themes of dnpcrafts through art! We already have essayists on board, but more are always welcome, so if that's something you're interested in we'd love to have you. please join the discord or send us an ask/message if you'd like to be part of this project. Of course, we'd also love to hear the response from people who are not interested in working on the zine but are (hopefully) interested in reading it.
This project is currently in the planning stage, with some people working on writing their analysis already, so follow this blog for progress updates!
Remember, creativity is nothing without friendship!

I truly think the strongest evidence that dnpcrafts!dan and phil are meant to be different characters than their real lives/youtube personas is the way they handle Dan's "don't drink the glue!" comment in the tutorial. Like. When has irl Dan ever passed up the chance to poke fun at Phil for eating the glue? But crafts!dnp just carry on as if they are giving normal safety instructions. Consuming glue holds no particular meaning to them.

DanandPhilCrafts + Fucked Up Queer Devotion + Christian Homophobia: An Essay
We’ve all been talking about the willingness of Dan and Phil to perform the ritual, we’ve all been talking about the intimacy of carving out your lover’s heart, but I have not heard anyone talk about the fucked up side of Dan and Phil’s (fictional) relationship with each other, and with Him, so here goes.
On the craft channel, Dan and Phil act overwhelmingly positive, like satanic children’s show hosts, but this is clearly a farce. We see them drop their smiles quite a few times during the crafting- most notably in Glitter Faces when Dan’s craft turns out wrong, and when Phil cuts Dan’s hand. “Don’t cry, craft” is directed towards the audience, but it seems Dan and Phil are following their own advice. Cults, after all, prey on vulnerable people. While they do seem scared of doing the ritual, and their involvement with Him, they are, however, definitely willing. In
The blood on Dan after he kills Phil is interesting; The handprint on his shirt isn’t a sign of a struggle, but rather Phil just grabbing his shirt- that’s pretty intimate, honestly. The blood on his face could’ve been caused by a bunch of things: blood splatter he wiped at? wiping at his face (eyes?) with a bloody hand? or Phil holding his face? (I like the third option) The blood on his nose might totally have been accidental, and just a thing that happened, but it could also be an allusion to the cat whiskers, in the spirit of bringing things back to the beginning and whatnot.
After the ritual is complete, there’s the obvious tarot symbolism. @freckliedan has a great post about this, but I’ve got more to add, so bear with me. Yes, Dan and Phil are framed as the lovers, but that’s not all. While the sexual deviance associated with the devil card has clear connections to queerness, it’s main association is usually unhealthy relationships and dependence. From this, and the obvious devotion displayed in the video, the craft versions of Dan and Phil are implied to be unhealthily dependent on each other, and devoted to the point of obsession. While the relationship certainly isn’t abusive, this obsession just isn’t healthy.
Furthering the unhealthy relationship idea is when Phil calls Dan “Sampson”. In the Bible or whatever (I’m not Christian sue me) Sampson topples these pillars, killing both himself and his enemies, which has a clear parallel to Dan’s stacked ingredients falling over, but the use of “folly” is interesting, and suggests a further connection. Sampson had married a prostitute, and she sold him out, basically, leading to his enslavement and later death. In this story, this is the clearest and most obvious act of folly by Sampson: marrying someone who he shouldn’t have, someone who it was taboo for him to be with. Connected to Dan and Phil, it suggests that their relationship is dangerous due to the social taboo, but it’s also implied that Phil will betray Dan. Perhaps we’ll see that in a 5th crafts installment, or perhaps it’s simply a commentary on being in a relationship with someone considered unacceptable.
Speaking of unhealthy relationships, that’s sure what they’ve got with Him! Leading up to the ritual, Dan and Phil are shown to be scared of Him, even though they call Him their friend. Dan’s head shake when Phil says “crafting has improved my life in numerous ways” is very telling. At the end, Dan’s shoulders tense at His first footstep, however, when He actually touches Dan, he doesn’t seem scared at all- forgive me for this next point, but from the way he kinda leans into the touch and tilts his head back, it seems more like he’s going for “turned on” rather than “scared”.
“Okay, cool” you say, “but what does it mean?” Well, Dan and Phil’s relationship in this series is not just about homoerotic undertones- this is an allegory for toxic queer sexual relationships. Why would they make something about toxic relationships when they’re in a healthy relationship? With the toxicity, and the power imbalances, and the satanism, Dan and Phil’s (fictional) relationship is a representation of Christian fears of queerness, and the supposed immoral/corrupting/anti-Christian effects of being in a queer relationship. The fear Dan and Phil show throughout the series is representative of internalized homophobia. They’re scared to align themselves with Him because it means accepting their own queerness. Dan shows more fear than Phil throughout the series (like after his glitter face turns out to be a pentacle) which parallels his real world internalized homophobia that he’s experienced. By holding hands with the devil (or baphomet?) standing behind them, Dan and Phil have embodied every conservative fear about queerness, but have come out on top. Through their YouTube channel, we get to do the same.

collaborative danandphilcrafts analysis
okay hi phannies. so i made this post and people seem very interested. i also shared my own theory. however i have seen so many people analysing and theorising and noticing things about the series (some are definitely /j or /s or /hj but oh well) that i think, if we do anything, we should do something collaborative.
we could present different theories or analyse different parts or something. don’t know how we’d go about that so if anyone has ideas let me know. and if anyone would be interested please say something!

Handedness in DanAndPhilCrafts - Slime
A documentation and analysis of the hands that Dan and Phil use in the new Crafts video. Obviously some of this stuff is just due to filming and seating angles, but as with so much else about this video, I think some really interesting things can be intuited from it. Sorry if anyone has already done this!
This whole idea came from a post @lesbaurinkos pointing out that Dan - who's left handed - uses his right hand to sacrifice Phil, and comparing it to this exchange from Glitter Faces:
Phil: If you're left handed, ask a friend. Dan: Why am I left handed? Phil: Everybody makes mistakes.
This implies that there is something wrong with Dan's left handedness, and I've seen some suggest that this is what leads him to do rituals with his right. Others still say that perhaps this shows a transition of some sort, so that he is not the same person. While these are valid and interesting readings, I'd like to put forward a different theory.
Traditionally, the left hand has been seen as sinister (literally the Latin word for left, while the right was 'dexter'), so one would think that Dan's left handedness would actually be a boon for a Satanic ritual. It's a mark of otherness, of queerness, that was historically punished by a Christian society who saw it as deviant and wicked.
Indeed, it isn't just Dan who uses a hand different from his dominant one for ritualistic practice. Although we don't see Phil make the cut on Dan's hand, when he holds the knife, he holds it in his left hand.
Tumblr media
Likewise, once it cuts to the next shot, the knife is at an angle that suggests it having been put down from his left.
Tumblr media
Dan's wound is on his right hand, and he uses this hand for many of the ritualistic elements to come, including - while still in Crafts mode - anointing himself and Phil in slime and holding the knife while telling us that He wants it 'straight from the source'.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This might be because his left hand is out of action due to all that blue slime on it. How did that blue slime get there? First, a word on the slime itself.
The two slimes serve different purposes. Dan's slime is intended to be a vessel and Phil's will be 'fun to touch'. Thus, while the red slime is only for Him, I would argue that the blue slime is for Them. After all, creativity is nothing without friendship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That homoerotic hand grab with Phil - which squishes together the friendship slime, the same colour as Phil's eyes, as Dan points out - represents 'friendship' as the other force alongside Him. In this hand grab, Dan's dominant hand becomes covered in slime, leaving only his non-dominant hand for ritual purposes.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, Phil is using his left hand here (his ritual hand), perhaps a sign of their differing priorities. I won't go into too much detail here, but I've seen others make interesting posts about Phil doing things for Him, and Dan doing them for Phil. This isn't too important here, as it's Dan's deliberate choices after this about which hand to use that become particularly interesting.
Indeed, after this, Dan draws the sigils on the walls with his right hand, and he also walks into the room to complete the sacrifice holding the knife in his right hand. If his right hand is his ritual hand, this makes sense.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, and I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, he leaves the room with it in his left hand.
Tumblr media
I think this is fascinating, since - as with the cut in Dan's hand - we don't see what happens between these two shots. We hear Phil scream and assume Dan has stabbed him as planned, but we don't get to see which hand he actually wields the knife with. Going with my above thesis, perhaps this is because it is muddy and unknowable to what extent Dan is doing this for Him (the right hand) and to what extent he's doing it for Phil (the left).
We can also view this in contrast with the hand cut from earlier, where the discarded knife indicates that Phil completed the whole thing with his left (ritual) hand.
Dan also has a bloody handprint on his shirt, presumably from Phil in his final moments, and it's a right hand print. This is Phil's 'friendship' hand. Despite Phil's ultimate devotion to Him, during the moment of his greatest sacrifice, it is the deep intimacy of this act between the two of them that is most important.
Tumblr media
In the final ritual scene, Dan begins by holding the knife in his right hand (his ritual hand).
Tumblr media
However, he then holds it in both hands, just as he holds Phil's heart in both hands a moment later. Both ritual and friendship are working together here, and he continues for the rest of the scene to use both hands to anoint them in Phil's heart's blood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the final shot, they are stood in their usual formation (Dan on stage right, Phil on stage left) and they each hold an item of ritualistic significance in their non-dominant, ritual hand. Dan holds Phil's heart in his right hand; Phil holds the knife in his left. What they each hold in their dominant hands is each other.
Tumblr media
As a few others have pointed out, the rope of Baphomet behind them also evokes imagery of handfasting. That suggests that this is not just a summoning of Baphomet, but also a marriage ceremony of sorts. They are bound not just to Baphomet, but to each other.
A lot of this is, of course, because of their standard way round of sitting, so that their dominant hands are always between them, but it is fascinating that they made the choice to continue with this motif even once they were roaming free.
This is my final thesis, then, that throughout the video they both use their non-dominant hands for acts of ritualistic significance, while their dominant hands become important for their relationship. This is especially true for Dan, whose devotion often seems split between Him and Phil. Dan's left handedness could additionally act as a metaphor for queerness, so it's especially notable the way that this hand is reserved only for Phil.
Basically:

wrt the whole loss of innocence thing and ppl perceiving phil as being "betrayed," i hope my and a lot of other ppls comments arent being misinterpreted as, "therefore dan is innocent and was pulled into this by a leader." no, the point is they are both on equal grounds. in terms of behavior, they both act exactly the same with the main difference being phil acting as dan's (and subsequently our) guide. they are hand in hand at the end cuz they are one and the same.
wrt actual dan and phil AS Dan And Phil™, their differences are not as exaggerated as they once were and instead theres a lot more focus on their similarities and the bizarre idiosyncrasies that they developed alongside each other and influenced by each other. even in little ways like, phil obv talks more with a slightly southern english accent bc hes been living in london, but dan also says a few words with a more northern accent that he used to say southern (eg, bath).
dan being the one who sacrifices phil is not at a higher position than phil being the sacrifice itself. phil being the guide is seemingly at a higher position than dan at first, but in the end they are exactly the same. thank you for coming to my ted talk

Okay, as someone who has always been obsessed with everything related to horror, I loved the new Dan and Phil crafts video so much. Like, don't get me wrong, I liked the other videos on the channel, but they always kind of lacked something for me, but THIS ONE?! SO FUCKING GOOD. They did such a amazing job with it. I loved this kind of found footage style so much it's genuinely so fucking cool I would love to see more of horror related stuff from them because it was so incredible. I already watched it twice, but I will probably rewatch just so I can slowly analyze it.

hello, analysis question. what do you think about the fact that in the slime video dan is the one whose blood is spilled first? the only wound he has is on his hand, as opposed to phil's much more severe one. does this mean anything?
okay, this is going to be based more in personal interpretation than something with references and sources because off the top of my head i can't think of situations that mirror this in horror. I will, however, be sourcing from other people's anlysis on here when it's relevant.
The first blood spilled in a piece of media heavily relating to horror or death is most often the inciting incident. However, I don't think that's relevant here. I think the inciting incident of danandphilcrafts is something that happened off screen. As is very well explained in this post by @dapg-otmebytheballs, everything that happens in these videos is a joint and agreed upon act created by a joint belief system. BUT...there's a clear pattern from all the way back in Squareflakes that Phil is the ringleader in what they're doing. He explains the crafts to Dan and the Audience, he tells him and us what to do and chides Dan if he's not doing it right. It's my personal interpretation that Phil was the original believer and the one who brought Dan in.
That makes Dan's blood something else–the blood of the innocent. The spilling of innocent blood is an inciting incident in itself. It's a point of no return. and can be tied back to its importance in rituals. Rituals (at least in media, i don't claim to speak on real practices) often ask for virgin blood. virginity = innocence. This is often interpreted as a sexual virgin, as that is how the world is most often used today, but (from what i've read) it actually refers to someone who's blood has never been used in a ritual before. Phil has already been sacrificed once, in Potato Prints, so perhaps part of the reason Dan's blood was used is because just Phil's was no longer viable to summon Him.
Back to Phil being the leader of the two of them, I believe the reason Dan gets off with a much smaller wound is, perhaps, a matter of responsibility. If Phil got him into this, then it's only right that he take the brunt of the sacrifice. Dan's sacrifice, all along, has been his innocence, not that either of them know that. By spilling innocent blood, and using it in a ritual, that virginity/innocence is lost. and it only continues to be lost even more as the ritual progresses, resulting in the biggest lost of innocence of all, killing another human being.
Dan's blood being spilled is the point of no return. With Phil back alive again after the events of Potato Prints, they could have made a fresh start. But they're devoted to eachother, and to Him. There was no hope for them, but maybe before this moment, if things had been different, there could have been.
So, in summary, my personal interpretation of the significance is this piece by Jenny Holzer
Tumblr media
and this quote by John Darnielle:
This is why people cry at the movies: because everybody’s doomed. No one in a movie can help themselves in any way. Their fate has already staked its claim on them from the moment they appear onscreen.

Summary: Dan let himself fall into a trance, no longer thinking and instead just doing. Dan reached into the wound in Phil’s chest and wrapped his hand around his heart. Phil was already dead, yet the inside of his chest was still warm. Dan swore he could still feel Phil’s heart beat faintly as he began to pull the mass of muscle and blood out of his chest.

Slime in Slime (2024): An Analysis
Dan and Phil could’ve chosen literally any craft for the fourth installment in DanandPhilCRAFTS, and they chose slime. Surely this has to mean something, right? Right.
For any young person in 2015-2017, slime should bring back memories. It was everything and everywhere. Literally every single time I hung out with friends, they’d want to make slime. The use of slime in DanandPhilCRAFTS, and the age group of the majority of their fans, forms an association to this time period. 2015-2017 also happens to be when The Amazing Book is Not on Fire and Interactive Introverts were created, and one of the peaks of the DanandPhil™️ brand. It also happens to be around the time DanandPhil crafts was birthed. By calling back to this era in a craft video, and using the slime for ritualistic sacrifice, Dan and Phil are acknowledging the harm of the DanandPhil™️ era personas and the phandom perceptions. By pouring the slime into the fire, Dan is firmly establishing this era as a thing of the past, representing the authenticity of Dan and Phil in this new era.
Slime also has a clear connection to Slime and Sadness Cinnamon Rolls. This video shares satanic imagery with the craft videos, of course (Lucifer Lester moment) but the theme of authenticity is also present. The way Dan acts as Sister Daniel in this video was the largest display of gender nonconformity and horniness by Dan and Phil at this time. Halloween baking and authenticity also brings us back to Monster Pops, and the aftermath: the post-baking universe. This marked a shift in Dan and Phil’s content, where they began to cut less gay shit and horny shit from their videos (like Dan’s fake orgasm during the video). If you really wanted to, you could even consider post-baking to be the beginning of the softlaunch. Both of these are events in which the horniness of Dan and Phil’s content was ramped up, and honestly the slime video has so much phallic imagery with the knives, but it’s also a representation of less censorship (if you’d like to call it that) by Dan and Phil.
Through both of these associations to slime itself, Slime invokes moments in Dan and Phil’s history where their performing personas were dropped in favor of a more authentic representation of self, like when Dan and Phil drop the craft channel personas to perform the ritual. This does, of course, connect to their coming out, and the handholding in Slime- slime as an object is connected to their authenticity, and so is the video Slime.
