Side note: Since I have been writing a lot, I haven't really had the time to read fanfiction - which I really miss doing. I have forgotten what it felt like to read it. To be blown away by someone's words and wonder how tf it's not canon. To grin into my pillow. To fall in love with my faves a little bit more.

Comics Read 7/18- 31/2022 

I recently read two trade paperbacks I have had for over a year. I got them for familiarity with the authors and brand loyalty reasons. It’s harder to draw a direct notes of autobiography to these than what I read in the past couple of entries. So I am going to go straight into a discussion.

First up is Tomorrow written by Peter Milligan with art by Jesus Hervás and colors by James Devlin. I know Milligan is pretty controversial writer, but I often find myself surprised by how much I like his work, so I keep seeking it out. The plot involves a virus that leaps from the internet and kills almost all the adults in the world. But the book seems uninterested in the virus and most of its online origin. At first I was disappointedly comparing it to Milligan’s earlier, (sadly truncated) comic New Romancer, about a modern day computer programmer for a dating site accidentally bringing Lord Byron, Ada Lovelace and Cassanova into the modern world. There is a video game called Tomorrow within the comic, and the game’s creator is one of the main characters. This seems like something that would tie into the larger “how did we get here?” plot, but it doesn’t.  But then I thought maybe Milligan wanted the readers to just bring our own online experiences of dehumanization and outbreaks of violence. The larger question of how are we rearing children by rearing them online? From my time on Twitter, there I often see an oscillation between “the children will save us!” and “the children really don’t know how to screen for misinformation and it’s getting worse!” By the end of Tomorrow, thinking about this was really resonating to me. 

Even with this interpretation, I don’t think the comic really works. The scenes of violence often feel gratuitous. There are too many characters with too little interaction to really get invested. And there are just too much dialogue about race and sex that is cringe inducing. Its depiction of neurodiversity, which is tied to the plot, is also bad. It feels like it was created for some kind plot points, but little sense of lived experience. Two the the characters are a set of fraternal twins. The boy is portrayed as being on the spectrum. The girl isn’t. They are physically cross country from each other  when the plague hits, but they have a real twin psychic connection. This gets severed by the social events that happen in the plot. It feels like there is an idea there worth exploring. But it isn’t really done in this comic. The plot here sort of stops. There isn’t even rushed wrap up like there was in New Romancer. I don’t know if there were or are plans for a follow up arc, but I don’t really want more. There was a plot involving a corporate retreat that I just couldn’t care enough about to remember from issue to issue. I also really disliked the art. It’s over detailed in a way that keeps things from coming together. I read in the the bio that Hervás trained as an engineer. It reminded me of some architects vs. engineer debates, with engineers likely to dismiss architects as just there to pretty up their scientific work. I am familiar with the work of a couple of trained artists turned comic book artist, Gabriel Rodríguez and Mikel Janín. Based on these comparisons alone, architecture is better training for switching into comic book art.

My next read was The Low, Low Woods, written by Carmen Maria Machado, with art by Dani, and colors by Tamra Bonvillain. This, like The Dollhouse Family, is another example of comics under the Joe Hill curated Hill House Comics published under DC’s Black Label imprint. Now that I have read three of the titles, I have to say how impressed by how different these horror comics all are in their styles, settings type of stories they tell. I also have to start by saying I really like Dani’s art. This isn’t just in comparison to having read a comics where I hated the art, directly before it. That comparison really made me appreciate how Dani knows when to leave things more suggested than filled in. The art is evocative and moody. In some ways it reminds me of Eduardo Risso, though with a fair helping of early Sandman artists like Mike Dringenberg. This befits the mid nineteen nineties setting.

The  comic takes place in the fictional coal mining town of Shudder-to-Think, Pennsylvania and concerns two teenage girls trying to figure out about some lost time at the movies as well as the other strange parts of their town such as the skinless men in the woods. Things that everyone knows about but no one talks about. Starting with the town’s name there are a lot of places with names that would be too on the nose if it wasn’t about familiarity creating blind spots.

Last year I read Machado’s memoir, In the Dream House, about recognizing that she was in an emotionally abusive lesbian relationship and the need for representation of the bad aspects in life. There are similar themes here, with less academic citing and more supernatural occurrences. In part of the In the Dream House she discusses how the stress of that relationship affected her writing style, making her out put mostly fragmentary. The initiating incident of known memory loss does create a stress in the characters life that complements the one she described in her memoir. I definitely intend to read more of her writing.

it’s been approximately five hours since the submit closed, i’m coming out of a bit of a coma, and i’ve FINALLY come to my final decisions regarding acceptances. not only was this time dedicated to choosing between apps in the same skeleton (which, trust me, you guys did not make it easy), but also dedicated to giving those i didn’t accept solid and objective reasons why they were rejected. after all the work you guys put into your apps, i owe you that much. if you weren’t accepted and want to know why, just hit me up and i’ll tell you !

dani’s harrowing story had me hooked from the very beginning, literally on the edge of my seat. not only that, but i can already tell dani is going to be an incredibly active character, an unstoppable force, and i’m so excited to see what becomes of her. 

cameron lamb as THE BACKUP 

we love a man who says “direct action”, truly. i love to see his motivation to expose the unjust continue throughout the application, all the way from the growth in his interest in hacking to his motivations for finding sam. 

skip mun as THE BREADBASKET 

skip delivers everything i expected of the breadbasket, and so much more. from being self-conscious of his lack of book smarts, to his accidental slide into becoming a drama kid, skip is fun, kind, and far more complex than i truly gave this skeleton credit for. 

leigh hallewell as THE CHRYSALIS

again, animal handling was one of those skills i expected a muse to just be born with, but the fact that leigh actively nurtured this skill to combat her lack of human connection ? owie. i also love how a part of her tragic backstory bleeds into her need to find sam, to give him a voice, even if she’s not exactly noble herself. 

emmet ericson as THE CLEAN SLATE 

every time i read emmet’s application, it haunts me more and more, especially the line “she’s got to prove to someone, anyone, herself, that people are worth looking for.” i can’t wait for her to break my damn heart over and over and over again. 

saaleha davis as THE EBULLIENT 

just the fact that she was too much of a team player to excel in gymnastics is just... a fucking god tier interpretation of the ebullient skeleton. saaleha won my heart over easily, as she does with so many others, i’m sure, and i can’t wait to make her suffer see her thrive !! 

cyrus blackwell as THE GAMBLER 

cyrus is a fucking incredible mixture of both brashness and low self-esteem, and by the time he was being shuffled off to wormwood in shame, i was absolutely in love with him. at least to me, he’s too much heart and too much loneliness, and i can’t wait to see how he develops. 

nigel giocondo-jones as THE GRIFTER 

if you were to peek at my notes for this app, the first thing you’d notice are the words “THIS FUCKS”, underlined three times. nigel’s story had me reeling from the very beginning, and he is every bit as broken and devious as i could wish for him to be. 

cain jacobs as THE HELLION

you had me at “loan sharks”. no but seriously, cain’s lifelong struggles and distrust of the justice system ( his shitty father being the chief of police ?? fucking oof ) makes him the perfect hellion. also the fact he was a loan shark’s foot soldier, that’s just... zoinks, is all i can say. 

ava moore as THE INSIDER 

ava’s app left me out of breath just reading it, but honestly, that’s the kind of energy i want from the insider. she comes across so airy and light, and the visual of her rollerskating away from a tough conversation while popping a lollipop in her mouth is truly the most insider thing i could think of. 

natty darnell as THE LOVELACE

not only is natty kind of silly and just a little bit dramatic, she has some hidden depths to her that make her so much more intriguing. that fear of impermanence, the need to romanticize, and her almost cartoonish nature tie together so perfectly. i can’t wait to welcome her to wormwood! 

joshua min as THE METALHEAD

josh embodies both the single-minded focus and the overwhelming practicality of the metalhead so fucking well. even just how he ended up going to wormwood is perfect. also, don’t worry; i’ll be adding an auto shop for josh shortly. 

juno goulart as THE MISANTHROPE

juno captures the general alienation of the misanthrope skeleton so fucking well. everything from her penchant for numbers, to her distaste for rules and authority of all sorts. i also love how you went full kierkegaard and managed to weave questioning religion in with all the themes that make her up. 

daniel molina as THE RHYTHM 

empathy is one of those special skills i expected an applicant to say their muse was more or less born with, but the fact that daniel had to actually learn it after falling from such great heights is pretty incredible. i’m gonna love watching him grow. 

adrianna deveaux as THE SABOTEUR

this one was, by far, the toughest decision i had to make, but in the end, adrianna just fit the skeleton so fucking perfectly. she pursued finance out of spite, she went to wormwood because she didn’t want to be just another number in the ivies, and the fact she heard about sam going missing and thought “finally, something fun” ??? she’s the worst, and i love her. 

raf bensaïd as THE WISEACRE 

this was one of the tougher choices i had to make, but raf’s own hubris leading to his downfall ? and his downfall being wormwood ? pure chef’s kiss. also his ambiguous but incredibly intense connection to sam... brittney spears vc yeah.

De Gotham ao erotismo, site Minas Nerds participa da Virada Nerd

O Museu da Imagem e do Som, em São Paulo, além de receber a megaexposição “Quadrinhos”, foi também palco da Virada Nerd, nos dias 24 (sábado) e 25 (domingo) de novembro.

Na tarde de sábado, o site Minas Nerds promoveu duas palestras.

A primeira, intitulada “Sociologia em Gotham City de Christopher Nolan”, foi capitaneada por Laluña Machado e falou do desafio do diretor Christopher Nolan em trazer de volta a figura do Batman diferente a dos filmes dos anos 90, versão mais caricata (para não dizer, de “gosto duvidoso”) do Homem-Morcego.

Para tanto, Nolan bebeu da fonte de grandes referências dentro dos próprios quadrinhos do personagem para realizar a trilogia Batman Begins (2005), O Cavaleiro das Trevas (2008) e Batman – O Cavaleiro das Trevas Ressurge (2012), este com a atuação marcante de Heath Ledger (que faleceu antes da estreia do filme). Aliás, nas palavras do próprio diretor foram os vilões que definiram o sucesso da trilogia. Laluña comentou: “Esse último filme pode ser considerado um marco, pois lançou uma pasta na academia de cinema com mais cinco novas categorias de premiação no Oscar, graças a atuação de Ledger”.

A pesquisadora também levantou alguns pontos do personagem que passam despercebidos, como o lado corrupto e relapso de Brune Wayne causa prejuízos a Gotham City e seus cidadãos: “Wayne é o cara mais rico de Gotham. E não sou eu que estou dizendo, é a (revista) Forbes! E esse cara mais rico desvia dinheiro da própria empresa para fazer o seu uniforme, o que causa danos como aumento de desemprego na cidade. E isso é só uma ponta de uma série de problemas”, reforçou.

E prosseguiu: “Por conta desse descontrole em relação aos negócios, gera desemprego e vilões cada vez mais gabaritados. Já reparou que a maioria deles tem graduação? São psiquiatras, juristas, empresários; não são em todas as histórias de super-heróis que encontramos esse diferencial”.

Mulheres falam de erotismo e pornografia? Por quê não?

Já o segundo painel, “Erotismo e pornografia nas HQs: uma ótica feminista”, lançou luz a um assunto que mesmo com todos os avanços que a humanidade realiza, ainda causa muita polêmica: erotismo e pornografia. No caso, as integrantes Daniela Marino, Danielle Lhoret, Laluña Machado e Gabriela Franco fizeram o recorte não apenas na indústria cinematográfica do gênero, mas também nos quadrinhos. Lhoret, que é Mestra em Teoria Literária e estudou Grego, falou da etimologia do termo “Pornografia”, que vem do grego. Essas referências mostraram a visão do povo da Grécia Antiga ao papel da mulher na sociedade: “Infelizmente, isso ainda permeia nos dias atuais, ou seja, a mulher que não tem opinião própria, que deve ser apenas fruto para o bel prazer masculino, colocada em uma posição subjugada”.

“O que entendemos como sexo e pornografia é vindo de uma visão predominantemente masculina, que enxerga na violência uma maneira de a mulher sentir prazer”, completa Gabriela Franco, que usou como exemplo, o da atriz Linda Lovelace, que sofria ameaças e espancamentos do então esposo para realizar as filmagens.

Mesmo com esse cenário, as mulheres estão, sim, falando, consumindo, demonstrando o seu interesse, Gabriela destacou. E isso é estatisticamente comprovado: pesquisa recente do serviço Pornhub mostrou que, em 2017, elas fizeram buscas desse tipo de conteúdo. Confira a notícia sobre o assunto aqui.

Outro ponto interessante, levantado por Dani Marino, foi ainda a grande “neura” em relação ao corpo feminino e a constante procura por uma “perfeição”. “Para termos ideia, o Brasil é um dos campeões em cirurgias íntimas estéticas. Muitas vezes, realizada mais por uma questão de agradar o companheiro do que por parte da própria mulher”, disse a pesquisadora.

Ela também mostrou alguns exemplos de HQs em que a mulher tem o seu protagonismo, como em “Red”, de Chairim Arrais. Na publicação, extremamente delicada, com poucas falas e predominância de tons aquarelados, a personagem conta de forma descontraída a busca pelo prazer sem preconceitos ou tabus. Protagonismo e empoderamento, em suma. “O que chama a atenção é que a personagem não tem um padrão do senso comum de beleza, muito menos receio de aceitar o seu corpo como é”, arrematou Dani Marino em sua apresentação.
