well the whole plot of the movie is danny (rsl's character) going home to die (aids). so u see a lot of each char's reactions to the situation and u get to see how close or distant each of them are. janet (his mom) is very close and spends most of her time with danny, and his sister annie and his father martin are a bit more distant and sort of loving from afar. i dont wanna spoil too much bc u rly do have to see it, u can watch here :3

this is also just my propaganda to tell all rsl fans in any capacity to please watch this movie please its only an hr long

i know this is just entirely a coincidence, but it's interesting to me that wilson's brother danny is kinda like a combination of rsl's other roles. danny was his characters name in in the gloaming, and rsl played a schizophrenic character in the boys next door. it probably means absolutely nothing, but i love deluding myself so i'm gonna pretend it does

i also definitely wish it was longer, i think a lot more couldve been touched on in terms of annie and martin, annie especially. annie and dannys dynamic was super interesting especially with her (iirc) being a little hesitant to be around him physically bc of his aids. i dont wanna word this better than this i just woke up and i dont Care!!! anyway + i wanted to see her son!! i wouldve loved to see danny be uncle danny!!! theres a lot i wouldve rly liked to see tbh

im especially obsessed with the little daydream / nightmare sequences in b&w because good god. im young and healthy. the first one i dont talk abt much bc hes Coughing up Blood in the second one but theres something to be said about the fact that hes singing to a woman I Think. something something janet still struggling with dannys sexuality subconsciously but this woman in her daydream doesnt even have a face so something about still knowing that reality is long gone. idk im spitballing i could be reading way too much into it and it could just be Lol she was watching that show so we parodied it :3

i really enjoyed seeing all of the ways that people in this movie grieve as well, or i guess pre-grieve. janet by spending as much time with danny possible, martin by keeping himself busy +wanting to be involved but too apprehensive about the distance between the two to do anything about it (ME THIS HAPPENED TO ME. I UNDERSTAND YOU MARTIN.) annie by. MAN I WISH I COULD TELL YOU MORE ABOUT HOW SHE BEHAVES BUT SHES ONLY THERE FOR W MINISCULE AMOUNT OF TIME! annie by distancing herself even further? i guess? but even then she still tried to spend time with janet so idk Idk.

whoopi goldbergs character was also fantastic for the few moments she was there and god do i wanna know more about her. i wanna talk to her sooooooo bad. fuck.

what are your thoughts on it? it's been a little while since i've seen it so i might be forgetting some stuff

the overall feeling of like. family that you aren't close with and it's mostly fine but it's still uncomfortable and you're trying to make up for it but it's kind of hard was done very well. i think it's sometimes easy to make family relationships be either good or overtly bad (like i love it but dead poets society still kinda does this) so i really liked how they did it here

i do wish it was a bit longer, it's in a weird spot of being like. longer than a short film and shorter than an average movie, and i think it could've gone a little bit further than it did

Just saw someone call RSL homophobic because of his joke on some House q&a so I took deep dive into what is true

Alright first of all, results of what I have found, he's not homophobic yall can calm down :)

So I went through said interview where he said smth like "is everyone obsessed w homosexuality" honestly I can see why someone could think of it as something homophobic but turns out it was just one of his jokes, he has this interesting sense of humor I think that's common knowledge about him. Then I searched for more interviews on said topic and turns out he just really doesn't ship Hilson, and basically sees it as queerbaiting, which is why he doesn't like it. Also if he was homophobic I think he definitely wouldn't play gay roles in actually a lot of movies.

So yeah for peace of our souls, he's just a chill ally guy.

Dannymay Poetry - Day 10 Family

Danny wandered to the front of the room like a plastic bag dragged by a light breeze, his legs steady only because they'd disconnected from his brain. He still had that deer-in-headlights look as he turned to face the class, like his Pavlovian response to bolt to the bathroom was a hair's breath from kicking in and whisking him away.  

"Um," he said, voice cracking, "it's in free verse?"

Sam mimed a deep breath and smiled at him from the back.  Tucker gave him a thumbs up.  Danny locked eyes on his papers and let the hasty words swell up his throat and over his tongue like water, slowly finding his rhythm as the lines lapped against the walls.

I perch on the banister and look down into a still house, A living room in miniature, doll-like. Stale air smells like the summer I was 8, Something indelibly Us leeching from the carpet, or walls. The smell that can only emerge when we are gone, Our home shut up like a box.  This emptiness feels like you.  Here is a version of me, a tapestry, Of a moment, and a moment, and a moment Shuttled through time and bound in white string. A houseplant left to yellow and stretch from a dark end table As our furniture collects dust. You live in hypotheticals In equations and circuits and graphs— And perhaps I learned that from you And wove myself into myth. Now, the ghost of us sleeps below Encased in solder-smoke and chrome. You built a rocket ship inside-out. As I sit in our mausoleum, the orange gloam of sunset Grows from the window across the dingy floor. And a vision out of the past— my sister glows like fire in that light In cheap bangles and striped socks, Feet kicking in the air as she reads on the rug. She rolls her eyes at me, but I lay down next to her anyway. I use the cover of her book to pin my star map flat So I can trace the constellations. I will not break the silence, only feel the thud... thud Through the floor as she taps her feet, deep in thought.   We exist in a bubble of warmth. I used to beg you for stories of constellations and cosmonauts. That far-flung dark, beautiful and hostile and unknown, Was my siren's call, not so unlike yours. How strange it is to be spun from an essence That has become my opposite, To be made and destroyed in the same breath. Did Clotho weave my life backwards, a chiral pair to yours? For one instant I held the heavens in my left hand. My catasterism— blast shadows etched across the walls. Am I interesting to you now? If only the stars would catch us as we fall, And usher gently in that good night. Charon nor Orion saw their poisoned stings.  Atropos snipped, and they fell unawares. Now I ask, do you believe in the Fates? Ticking down in our clockwork universe. Does there exist a sky with no constellations? But here the whole menagerie is loose With Cetus in the lead. You build blast doors over my deepest place And see if they will hold. Come, dam up the infinity behind them. You think you can close the hole you made, But you only seal yourselves into our family crypt. See?  I have already stepped through. I go to the threshold and open the doors.  I stand on the shore to cast the ashes, Let them sink into the tide.  Loss is in our nature.  Now I know And I am trying to let go. I can't contain you. I am only an echo of your voice. I am only the parts of you that didn't hurt to keep. One thread at a time, I cut myself away. What white string is left, you can have.
