The second of Jane Austen’s novels, first published in 1813, is the most often adapted, inspiring various different takes on it. The ones pictures above are detailed below:

Starring Ashley Clements as Elizabeth Bennet, Daniel Vincent Gordh as William Darcy, Wes Aderhold as George Wickham, Laura Spencer as Jane Bennet, Christopher Sean as Bing Lee, Mary Kate Wiles as Lydia Bennet, Julia Cho as Charlotte Lu, Maxwell Glick as Ricky Collins, among others.

Lizzie’s videos amount to 100 episodes + 10 Q&A, but shorter series enrich the story by offering other characters’ perspectives, most notably Lydia’s (and also Georgiana’s). A playlist at Pemberley Digital’s Youtube channel features them all in order.

The series has also been adapted into a book, The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet (2014), and spawned a sequel novel, The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet (2015).

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016 Film)

Loose adaption inspired by the 2009 novel of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith, which adds zombies to Austen’s original story. The movie makes alterations from the zombie book as well.

Orgulho e Paixão (Pride and Passion) (2018 Telenovela)

Brazilian telenovela in Brazilian-Portuguese

162 episodes x 30-40min (original version) Loose adaption set in 1910s São Paulo state, Brazil

Starring Nathalia Dill as Elisabeta Benetido, Thiago Lacerda as Sr. Darcy Williamson, Pâmela Tomé as Jane Benedito, Maurício Destri as Camilo Bittencourt (Bingley), Bruna Giphao as Lídia Benedito, Bruno Gissoni as Diogo Uirapuru (Wickham/Willoughby), among others.

The story takes inspiration from all 6 of Austen’s major novels (plus Lady Susan), but mostly from Pride and Prejudice. Others stars include Chandelly Braz as Mariana Benedito (Marianne Dashwood) and Anajú Dorigon as Cecília Benedito (Catherine Morland).

Features 100 episodes in the International cut. The telenovela has been broadcast in other countries and languages (such as Spanish) but as far as I know, not in English.

I also enjoyed Atlanta and, while it’s been a while since I’ve seen Bride and Prejudice, it’s got Indian musical numbers so c’mon, one gotta watch it.

Back to the closer adaptions, despite its age, 1980 is also good! 1940 is...very different, but fun in its own way.

In fact, while I find some of these versions weaker, I could find enjoyment in all of them - but maybe that’s cause I’m a sucker for P&P.

Part One

PLOT: He might hate himself, but it feels too good to stop.

Alex knows he can't be thinking of her like this. Not anymore. She'd even had David's baby now, was a mother to a child that called him Uncle Alex. Well how would poor Darcy feel if she knew her mummy and Uncle Alex were up to no good?

Alex stares at her text, right on the edge of the bed raking a hand through his hair completely dismayed but equally some excitement was stirring in his gut. On top of that was the guilt for feeling excited. He couldn't escape the mixed bag of feelings that were forced down his throat everytime Tia popped into his mind.

Tia: Hey Al, Dave's gone to his parents for the weekend but we've had some trouble with the taps. Would you mind coming to take a look? X

The kiss was sending Alex's mind into a spiral. He felt heat creeping through his skin, his forehead growing clammy. He knew rationally that it likely meant nothing. But how couldn't it? He often thought about that moment in the bathroom. He'd never been able to meet Tia's eye since. In fact, he'd avoided her at all costs and it had worked for the most part. If he did see her, it was usually in group settings she had to behave in. This scenario she was painting sounded like a bloody porn trope rather than an innocent text. Yet if Matt's wife was to send him the same text, he'd think nothing of it. He shook the sordid thoughts from his head and sighed, deciding it would be weirder if he didn't help. And so reluctantly, nervously and guiltily excited, Alex got himself ready.

As Alex pulled up to the farmhouse mansion that the they had lived in for three years, images of the bathroom he knew he'd have to go in today flashed through his mind. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to diminish the memory of him trapped against the shower door while Tia had her way. She'd reduced him to a withering mess, a far cry from Alex's usual sexual endeavours where he was the one in control. Tia had took it from him unapologetically. He was sat there for so long, that he almost missed the sight of her opening the front door, peering out curiously wondering why he was taking so long. It was only when he heard the distinct squeal of Darcy cooing into the afternoon that his eyes tore open.

Tia stood at the front door, leant against the frame with that familiar smirk on her lips and her baby canoodled in her arms. Her lean legs were crossed over each other, her shoulders bare of anything other than the thin straps of the slip she was wearing. Alex gulped, trying to gather himself before he left the car.

"Hey," Tia called, waggling her fingers at him from the porch he was walking towards. He felt like he was walking into the devils lair with the way she was stood there, already possessing him with her sultriness before he'd even so much as uttered a greeting. He couldn't help thinking it may all be in his head. Tia hadn't tried anything in the three years it had been since the incident.

"Hey Darce," Alex smiles when she calls out to him, wriggling out of Tia's arms to run into his. She lands at his knees, hugging them tightly.

"Mummy says you'll fix the taps!" Darcy babbles, incoherently. Her age of two doesn't contribute to her speech very well but she tries anyway. Alex loves her like she truly is his niece, it only makes his guilt intensify when he thinks of where his mind goes toward her own mother.

"Did she? Mummy needs to not have so much faith in me," Alex muses dryly, slinging Darcy up on his hip as he glances humorously at Tia. She chuckles, gesturing him inside and he follows after them.

Their house smells exactly like Tia does, like vanilla and cotton blended into one fine mix and then a hint of Jimmy Choo perfume that she's worn since school.

"I'm not very advanced in plumbing," Alex says as he walks in behind her, waiting for her to open the door. She shrugs, looking over her shoulder with a smirk that makes his skin crawl, what is so attractive about disgust? Alex doesn't know, but as equally as he wants to be sick, he wants to bow to his knees too.

"Neither is Dave, hence why it's still broken. I think it only needs tightening," she says, emphasising the word with a glint in her eye, "but you'll know about that better than me."

"Jamie's good at stuff like this," Alex's voice is an octave higher, he visibly cringes at himself but luckily she's not looking. She ignores his comment, coaxing him through to the kitchen where the apparent broken tap in. Nothing about the space has changed bar the toys and books covering the dining table. He almost feels as if he's been trapped in here for years when the door swings shut behind them.

"I need to put Darce down for her nap," Tia says, swinging the cupboard door open, she gestures to the pipes. It might as well be rocket science for Alex, he gazes at them nervously, wondering what on earth she expects him to do. Subconsciously he knows that's not what he's here for, yet he'd ignored that inkling and came anyway. He hates himself.

"Night night Al!" Darcy waves at him, her little hand clumpy in its movements and he chuckles, waving all the same as Tia moves past him, her hip bumping his on the way.

"Nighty night Darce. Sweet dreams," he bops her nose, grinning at the sound of her joyful giggle.

Alex looked back towards the taps once she's out of sight, his face scrunching up in dismay. He'd have to fix it - otherwise he really has come here for no reason, and he can't have that. So reluctantly, he leans down, checking the pipes. Contrary to them needing to be tightened, they were actually loose, the water dripping down and dampening the hard wood of the cupboard. Alex sighed, it was an easy enough job, there wasn't a crack in sight nor a spanner needed. He merely twisted it back into place, and then slid out to find Tia gazing over him.

"See I knew you were a handsy man," she winks and Alex grunts as he gets up, his bones clicking on the way. At his ripe age of thirty, perhaps his body shouldn't be so sore, but life on the road has weakened him to those things. He rubs his shoulder, the pain easing as his fingers curve out the knotted muscles.

"Coffee?"

Alex nodded, albeit reluctantly. He started to question her motives, whether he'd read too much into it. Tia had always been this way, he'd known her for decades and only once did she ever try her luck. Who's to say she's trying it now?

Alex ponders for so long that by the time the fresh coffee is warming up his palms, he splutters out his thoughts;

"Why am I here?"

"To fix the taps silly!" Tia giggles, her back landing against the counter, legs crossing over the other. She's a true temptress, he's never known anything like it. Her eyes gleam with amusement when his gaze lingers a little too long on her bare legs, right down to her feet with her perfectly primed toenails. He wonders briefly how much Dave pays to keep her this in tact, to keep her around. He bets it's a lot.

"Me? You asked me of all people," Alex's voice portrays his disbelief and she chuckles.

"Is it so unbelievable?"
