WHACKING TEACHER CLEARED BY COURT
Tumblr media
Barnsley Chronicle and South Yorkshire News, 22 August 1959
'Punishment deserved, properly meted out'
THE decision of a 27-years-old school teacher to punish a boy by hitting him with a rubber gym shoe was upheld by Barnsley West Riding Magistrates on Wednesday, when they dismissed a case of assault brought against the teacher by the boy's mother.
Mr. W. Brown (presiding) said the Bench felt that the punishment was deserved and had been properly administered by the teacher, Leslie Albert Buttle, 49, Caxton Street, Barnsley.
Buttle had pleaded not guilty and was defended by Mr. V. Way.
The boy, Michael Allen, aged 12, of 22, Belmont, Darfield Road, a pupil at the Cudworth Roman Catholic School, alleged in answer to Mr. J. D. Driver (prosecuting) that after being sent out of class with another boy, he was taken to the woodwork room, where Buttle struck him six or seven hard blows with a rubber gym shoe.
He further alleged that his mother, who later examined him, found a bruise at the bottom of his back.
P.C. Finucane said he examined the boy and found a bruise three inches long and about an inch wide at the bottom of his back.
When he later interviewed the defendant, Buttle said to him: "I certainly didn't hit him where the bruise was. The punishment was merited and I told him why he was punished."
In Court, Buttle said that he entered the class and found Allen and another boy standing talking to a girl pupil. He told them three times to sit down and they took no notice, so he told them to leave the room, saying he could wait no longer.
He told them to report to him at break, but he had to go looking for them and when he asked them why they had not reported they started mumbling and were very truculent.
He took them to the woodwork room and made them, in turn, bend over, and he hit each boy six times with a rubber gym shoe.
Neither of them wept or showed any signs of distress and the other boy did not complain at any time of being bruised.
Asked by Mr Driver if he had tried to find out if Allen could have got the bruise in any other way, he replied: "Unworthy as I was, I pursued my profession as a teacher and not as a detective."
He had earlier told the Court that Mrs. Allen abused him when she went up to the school, and told him that he was not fit to be a teacher.
Mr. Way said a parent entrusted a child to the discipline of a school and a teacher was entitled to administer reasonable corporal punishment.
The Bench had to decide whether the teacher had exercised his discretion properly in this case, and he asked them to accept the evidence of a "perfectly honest and sincere man" who said that he had administered the punishment he thought reasonable.

Abstract
"The statistical analysis of the impact of the top 50 X-class solar flares (1997–2024) on global seismic activity as well as on the earthquake preparation zones located in the illuminated part of the globe and in an area of 5000 km around the subsolar point was carried out. It is shown by a method of epoch superposition that for all cases, an increase in seismicity is observed, especially in the region around the subsolar point (up to 33%) during the 10 days after the solar flare in comparison with the preceding 10 days. The case study of the aftershock sequence of a strong Mw = 9.1 earthquake (Sumatra–Andaman Islands, 26 December 2004) after the solar flare of X10.16 class (20 January 2005) demonstrated that the number of aftershocks with a magnitude of Mw ≥ 2.5 increases more than 17 times after the solar flare with a delay of 7–8 days. For the case of the Darfield earthquake (Mw = 7.1, 3 September 2010, New Zealand), it was shown that X-class solar flares and M probably triggered two strong aftershocks (Mw = 6.1 and Mw = 5.9) with the same delay of 6 days on the Port Hills fault, which is the most sensitive to external electromagnetic impact from the point of view of the fault electrical conductivity and orientation. Based on the obtained results, the possible application of natural electromagnetic triggering of earthquakes is discussed for the earthquake forecast using confidently recorded strong external electromagnetic triggering impacts on the specific earthquake preparation zones, as well as ionospheric perturbations due to aerosol emission from the earthquake sources recorded by satellites."

This episode of Bluey is called Shaking
The Heeler family holiday to Aotearoa is violently interrupted when an earthquake strikes near the city they're visiting. Bluey is thrust against her will into a new, terrifying situation, and must endure the anxiety and stress that results.
Notes: The earthquake that occurs in this story was heavily based on the real life Darfield earthquake which struck the Canterbury region of Aotearoa New Zealand on the 4th of September, 2010. This story takes place in an unspecified city based on the cities of Christchurch and Nelson.

Shattered Ground: The 2010 Canterbury Earthquake
On the early morning of September 4, 2010, the South Island of New Zealand was jolted awake by a powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake, now known as the Canterbury or Darfield earthquake. Striking at 4:35 am local time, it was one of the most significant seismic events in New Zealand's recent history. With a maximum intensity of X (Extreme) on the Mercalli scale, the quake unleashed a wave of destruction that reverberated through the region.
Tumblr media
Initial Impact and Damage
The earthquake’s epicenter was located near Darfield, about 40 kilometers west of Christchurch, New Zealand's second-largest city. At a depth of just 10 km, the quake caused extensive damage and left residents grappling with power outages. Remarkably, while there were serious injuries—two from falling debris and flying glass—there were only two fatalities. The timing of the quake, early in the morning, and the relatively modern construction of many buildings helped limit the death toll.
Tumblr media
The quake was followed by several powerful aftershocks, including a 5.8 magnitude foreshock just seconds before the main event. The tremors were felt across the South Island and even reached parts of the North Island. Despite the shaking, no tsunami was triggered, as the epicenter was situated inland.
Response and Recovery
In the aftermath, New Zealand's National Crisis Management Centre was activated, and a state of emergency was declared for Christchurch and surrounding areas. The New Zealand Army was deployed to assist with recovery efforts, and initial curfews were set for affected areas. The cost of insurance claims ranged between NZ$2.75 and $3.5 billion, with the total damage estimated to reach up to $40 billion, marking it as one of the most expensive natural disasters in recent history.
The Geology Behind the Quake
The 2010 quake was a result of strike-slip faulting within the Pacific plate’s crust, near the Southern Alps’ eastern foothills. The earthquake’s complex nature involved multiple faults and was linked to regional seismic activity. The peak ground acceleration (PGA) recorded was 1.26 g, an extremely high value for such a fault rupture.
Aftershocks and Ongoing Impact
The aftershocks were relentless, with over 11,000 recorded by August 2012. Significant aftershocks included a 6.3 magnitude quake in February 2011, which devastated Christchurch, causing 185 deaths and massive damage. Other notable aftershocks occurred throughout the year, continuing to affect the region and complicate recovery efforts.
Financial and Structural Aftermath
The financial impact of the earthquake was staggering, with estimates of total costs reaching up to NZ$4 billion. Insurance and reinsurance companies faced substantial claims, with the Earthquake Commission (EQC) covering domestic residences and private insurers handling additional costs. This earthquake was the fifth most costly insurance event globally since 1953.
The 2010 Canterbury earthquake remains a significant event in New Zealand's history, showcasing the region's vulnerability to seismic activity and the resilience of its people. The recovery from this disaster highlighted the importance of preparedness and the need for ongoing efforts to mitigate future risks.

I really have to be better at giving my ass a break when riding. Went from Lyttleton to West Melton then back via Rolleston and Templeton, through behind the Airport to Belfast, finishing up in Papanui. Dismounted and couldn't support myself, so had to drape myself on Despechá's seat until I could feel my knees again.
Good thing I didn't go all the way to Darfield.
