But you were always one to stay the same, girl I know you want to be the rain And I know that we would fall in there For a time and then unfall again For a while, I'll take you burying old bones Dawn's grey, the sign in the winter light And I know that you can feel the pain Your eyes speak one hundred million lies Don't tell me you've gone astray I walk in circles I've seen million things that tell me so But I was one to play the fool, girl Though rules were somewhat dark to me And I know that we could fall in there For a time and then unfall again For a while, I give you darium bound stones Grow through the roots of your mind set apart And I know that you can feel the pain Your eyes speak one hundred million lies

You mentioned you have a Tintin oc, do you have any art of them? If not, can you describe them, like how they look or their name and personality and things? I'm so interested in people's oc's ❤️
Unfortunately i stopped drawing a long time ago so i don't have and can't make arts about neither Tintin or my oc,but at least i keep her alive through my writing on my other fic in my native language.
And yes! I can describe her for you 😘
Appearance: her name is Aisha,an young adult woman between 18 and 20 years old, 1.65 tall (5'5, almost the same height as Tintin). Long black, curly hair, usually braided or loose. She has vitiligo (I simply think people like that are the most beautiful thing 🥹) and eyes with heterochromia due to vitiligo (one is brown and the other is light green). Her clothes are very simple, long cargo pants with several pockets and she either wears a top or a tank top. Not so thin, a robust body, but still feminine.
Personality: well, here we start with the fact that she is a thief,bisexual, have ADHD and is ✨️brazilian✨️ lol. She is self-centered and thinks she is the best, always wanting to attract attention as she has a reputation for never having been caught regardless of the robbery. Debauched and manipulative, but only when necessary.
She's not a bad person, since even though she's self-centered, she has a big heart and is very charismatic, the type who makes friends after 5 minutes of conversation (in the meantime, she would probably already know about your family and be planning a visit lol). She has the energy of a Golden Retriver, but provokes like a black cat.
Background : how she and Tintin met is fun because they are the "enemies to lovers" troup. She ended up in Brussels because her parents abandoned her there and ran away because they were fugitives, a old woman called Anastacia took her to raise with two other acquaintances of hers, Alexander and Darium (they are old friends),basically becoming her adoptive relatives and calling her Aisha.
Tintin and her met when they were between 9 and 12 years old and by his looks she thought it was fun to tease the poor guy and get in the way of whatever he was doing regardless of what. Talking wasn't an option since she didn't take it seriously just to keep disturbing him, but when he started to return it in the same way it became a competition to see who hated each other more lol.
With Tintin soon becoming the hero and traveling the world, Aisha stayed, became a thief and started traveling the world always aiming to make the most eye-catching robbery possible (As she never hurt anyone and would return it if the person seemed to need the money more, her relatives let her go without any problems lol).
Every now and then he joined Tintin's enemies just to continue disturbing and making the situation worse, but there was one that was the trigger for enemies to lovers that i'll keep it short because this post is getting long lol. In short, she had joined a gang that manipulated her and to get revenge she planned everyone's arrest but Tintin was also involved and this gang hated him.
Classic one helping the other, Tintin got into an ambush in which she blamed herself because indirectly she was the one who gave the location without knowing it, they fought and you know that moment when one of the two ends up kissing the other and then they ask for one more? yeah 😏... After arresting the gang, they didn't exactly become a couple, but something close (it's deeper than that but I don't want to take too long 🥺)
Overal is it,there's some other little things but i guess it's enough for now. Thank you for the ask tho! I never thought someone would want to know about my Oc lol.

Sooo I got home from work, sat listlessly drinking yet more coffee and then remembered that this week's Tanaka ArSen interview video had dropped and was instantly revived. I've only watched through once but here's some paraphrased points and a bit of commentary.
Loving the auto-generated closed caption translations of Daryun's name… Baruen… Darling… Darium… VALUE…
Some talk about the ending, this is obviously full of spoilers incuding character deaths so sit this one out if you don't want to know about that. He said 80% of the ending was already decided from the start and that he figured out the rest while writing (including that he decided only three characters would survive, and that although he already knew one of them, he decided on the specifics of the other two as he went…!).
OMG his cheeky little laugh as he tells you about deciding that [spoiler] and [spoiler] would die... I can't be mad, for whatever reason I found Tanaka in this video kind of endearing, he's certainly a bit more lively when talking about his characters and story decisions, and some of his comments about writing are surprisingly relatable as well
So uh Tanaka literally created Narsus for Daryun (well, as a counterpart to Daryun, who he didn't feel would be interesting enough on his own... likewise he said earlier that Daryun was created as someone who would support Arslan and make his development more realistic rather than having a young boy do everything on his own).
(Love it when he says stuff that unintentionally reinforces Daryun/Narsus. This is like when he said he writes comrades in arms working towards the same goal as an alternative to romance lmao. How was I meant to read that and not think 'well, maybe that explains it, he accidentally wrote them as a couple')
When thinking of a flaw for Narsus to have his first thought was to make him tone-deaf, but he thought that had been used too many times in other works so he opted for painting.
Elam offsets Narsus's weaknesses as a young nobleman who lacks ability in certain areas (presumably life skills like cooking etc), and although the captions conked out a bit at this stage it sounded like he's also saying Elam is there because Arslan doesn't have any friends of his age so Elam becomes his first real friend?
Alfarid shows how two people with very different social statuses can become friends, and is like a younger sister for Farangis. When creating her he considered which of the characters would be paired up with her and since Gieve and Farangis were already a "married couple" (I'm assuming that's a tongue in cheek expression here) he decided upon Narsus.
Video is here. This one was good fun but I'm still feeling wary of what he will say about Hilmes next week!

~ chapter warnings: brief mention of blood
~ ☆彡~ Tumblr's algorithm works from reblogs so if you like my work please consider It
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And so it was settled. You and Hongjoong would officially join the elves in their quest to unite the magical forces and reclaim the lands igoras usurped. The questions brought about from the revelation of Hongjoong’s relations with this Seonghwa swirl around your mind like a rainstorm. The second you’re dismissed from Fraijia, the floodgates open.
“How do you know Seonghwa? You don’t appear to think of him fondly.” You delicately pose the question, just as lightly treading down the staircase to reach the forest floor.
Hongjoong tenses lightly and sends you a tight lipped smile, he shakes his head as if shaking off a memory of great discomfort.
“My dealings with Igoras go far beyond our first meeting Arla. It was 4 years ago, Darium- king of Igoras himself the bastard- came to us and offered our group full pardons in exchange for bringing Seonghwa to him. He’d exhausted all his best assassins trying already, we were his last option. If we couldn’t accomplish it, we’d be out of the picture anyway, he had nothing to lose in retrospect. Anyway, he didn’t count on one of our own already having ties to Seonghwa- the friend I told you about. Though he would have never agreed of course. His father- our leader- kept him completely in the dark. Seonghwa got lured to us and was completely oblivious, under the guise of our healer requiring some rare enchanted herb. They’d planned to immobilise him whilst he slept before taking his leave in the morning… When my friend caught wind of the true reason for his being there, he informed me thinking I also did not know. It’s one of my greatest regrets, as a friend and as a person… Needless to say, that perspective shift led to us tipping Seonghwa off. He fled of course, but not before raising our camp to the ground, some of us didn't make it through the night. I took the blame and was banished the same night.”
You’re taken aback to say the least, the thought of Hongjoong willingly going along with something like that stirs nausea in your gut.
“You said you left?” Is all you can muster.
“same difference, I would’ve left anyway after that. The point is, Fraija thinks he will now view it as him owing me and will therefore consider helping us.”
You nod in understanding. Now at the bottom of the stairs looking out into forest. The stag from your first day in Reynyr is just visible in the distance.
“What was your friend’s name?”
Hongjoong meets your eyes and smiles, a mournful one containing years worth of happiness.
“San, Choi san.”
You return the smile and bask in the tranquility of the forest for only a moment, before being interrupted by Hongjoong’s favourite individual.
“As fascinating and revealing as your little backstory is Hong, if you two lovebirds are quite finished it’s time to get going.” Hyunjin swirls past you both in a flurry of sass and nonchalance- an infuriating combination for the newly named ‘Hong’.
“Hong?” the man himself questions, his head tilted in mild irritation.
“I- Where are we going?” You inquire, choosing to gloss over the later part of the elf’s nonsense.
“You, dear humans, are going to the wolves. I, am going to find snacks to watch the looks on your faces to.” He sniggers as Felix jumps down from whatever tree he’d been perched in for the past five minutes.
You gulp in anticipation, Felix stands behind you and Hongjoong, a hand on each of your outside shoulders before sticking his head between you both.
“It’ll be fine, they’re friends.” He chirps happily before lightly pushing you both forward to follow Hyunjin.
“Just don’t look the big one in the eye when he’s all big and scary, he won’t tolerate your face as easily as me.” Hyunjin laughs over his shoulder.
“Oi, Chan is lovely what are you on about?” Felix laughs back
Hongjoong huffs under his breath before muttering something about when he gets his (your) dagger back and you can’t help but laugh too.
~
After a while of walking through the forest, you all arrive at the clearing where the wolves first made their presence known to you. A shiver goes down your spine as you step carefully around a small puddle of blood on the ground. All other traces of the attack are gone, making the area all the more eerie. Felix gives your shoulder a reassuring squeeze before offering his hand to aid you over some large rocks at the edge. The foliage on the other side is trampled, bracken leaves pressed into the forest floor haphazardly; large paw prints confirming this to be the spot the wolves had emerged from. You wonder what to expect, what form they would be in upon your official meeting, if there are any dos and don’ts depending on which. Hongjoong jumping down from the rock behind you spares you from further thoughts though, you all begin walking again.
Not five minutes later you and Hongjoong pull yourselves up and freeze. A loud snap sounding to the left. Felix turns to you both.
“We’re nearly there. They always have a scout around their borders, today he’s here to escort us.”
Upon finishing his sentence, the tall foliage to your left begins to part. One paw steps out, then a snout. More and more of the wolf emerges, you try harder and harder not to back away. He surveys you and Hongjoong carefully for a moment before walking past you until he’s situated in front of the elves- they all bow their heads respectfully and you and Hongjoong exchange a quick glance before following along.  Hyunjin breaks the formal silence with a step towards the wolf.
“Hello Han.”
“Hyunjin, Felix. I see the time has come then.”
“Indeed it has.”
You’re stunned. He spoke? His mouth did not move? You look over at Hongjoong in shock, he looks back at you in confusion- yet it seems misplaced. In a hushed tone you ask him if he heard the wolf now known as ‘Han’ speak.
“No? You did?”
Felix chuckles lightly.
“You have elven blood in you, and more magic than anticipated apparently. You can hear any magical creatures words as well as I it would seem.”
“Wow…” you let out under your breath, now in awe.
Han looks at you directly then.
“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Arla.”
His words raise questions that fill your mind for the remainder of the walk to the wolves’ camp.
Thought I’d show who’s behind the stands I've been posting. These are mostly used for me in designing what they look like and acting as internal references for me; there not really ‘official portraits’ like the stands are. I may eventually due portraits like the stands with refined designs, we’ll see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
today we celebrate the lives of derek and mana quinn. mana passed a couple of days before derek, but they are now together once again. they leave behind they're beloved niece and nephew, eliana and alan as well as their great-niece, aina.
derek was born to cora and darium west and lost both of his parents at a very young age, leaving him in the care of his elder brother, carter. the brothers would share an inseparable bond for the rest of their lives and derek would eventually raise derek's children after his passing.
i don't quite remember how derek and mana even met but from the moment they did, i knew they were going to live the rest of their lives together. while the couple chose to never have children, they poured their love into their niece and nephew, alan and eliana, and would make it to meet eliana's daughter, aina.
derek and mana's love for their respective careers and family will never be forgotten and will live on in the family they left behind. they will be incredibly missed by the rest of the quinn family.
Assassins as Roommates: The Christmas Miracle of 2019
Altair made a mental note to thank Maria for her insistance on the red suit. It kept him warm, and thus gave him an advantage over the snow Shay and Liam were hurling at him. Bumping into someone, he tensed for battle on all sides, but found it to be Malik. After curt nods, they dueled back to back. Arno stepped out from behind a tree, recognizeable from his new cowboy hat, and pulling nerf pistols from his new hoisters.
“Where’s Darim?”
“Malik, now?” Altair felt his friend shrug, and cut a snowball in half before it hit him. “Travelling.”
“Again?”
“Malik!” Malik rolled over Altair’s shoulder and slashed at Arno’s foam bullets. They landed soundlessly in the snow. Altair was faced with Kassandra, and focused his frustrations on her. “We made him travel with us for work for so long when he was young.” He slashed at her sword, but she was strong and held fast. Creating a circle, she’d hoped to loosen his hold on his, but Altair was smart. He allowed her to do the motion, then sidestepped, pushing her until she ran into Connor, who was fleeing from Aveline and his mother. Kassanda landed in the snow, laughing, and Altair helped her up.
Shaking the snow from her legs and backside, she said, “I don’t fall in battle so easily.”
“Just out of your element, is all.” Altair assured her, and pointed to her brother. “Do you think Alexios would fair as well?” A mischevious grin on her face, Kassandra ran to her brother and Altair returned his attention to Malik who was, no pun intended, single handedly fighting Aya and Elise.
“He’s a good boy, Malik. I’m not going to force him home. If he wants to travel the world endlessly with his friends,” Altair encrouched on Malik’s battle, fighting through Elise’s guard, tossing her sword into his hand, and handing it back. “Then who am I to stop him?”
“It’s the holidays, Altair.” Malik watched his friend chase off Elise and Aya, and readied himself for Gerard and Adewale. Far away, Connor roared,
“Who gave my mother a hidden blade?!”
Haytham brushed snow from his son’s shoulders and assured him. “Think nothing of it, Connor. She can’t take us both.” Ziio undid her other blade and Haytham gulped, “On second thought...”
Adewale welded an axe, Gerard with duel cutlasses. “This explains so much.” Malik defended, sidestepping Adewale and shoving him into Jacob. The pair fell into a bank of snow.
Altair kicked Gerard down, then used him as a ramp to leap off, throwing a snowball at Evie’s face. “What does that mean?”
The snow made a wet slapping noise, and made Evie’s hair cling to her face. Jacob’s laughter filled the yard. Malik pushed Gerard away, and he and Altair headed to defend their fort. “This is why you’re like that this time of year.”
“I’ve no idea what you mean, Malik.” Altair said, when in fact he knew exactly what his friend meant. “Darim is welcome home whenever he’d like.” Altair handed Aya a sword and now it was she who ran into battle. Altair leaned against the fort, deep in thought. “Whenever he wants.” A shelf of snow was dropped on his head, and Maria danced away, laughing. Shaking the snow was his body, it already absorbing through the suit, Altair chased. “Maria!”
When the battle ended and everyone was cold, they all went inside for the fireplace and hot chocolate. When the night wore long and they were ready for bed, all that remained were Maria, Altair, and Malik. Each man had a head on one of Maria’s shoulders, and they talked and watched the fire. Neither aware of how their Christmas had only just begun.
Darim had been travelling, as he’d told his father, but that wasn’t all he was up to. You see, Darim had figured if the rest of his loved ones had found their way home, then there had to be some who’d gotten lost along the way. And, when his parents had called and asked him home for the holidays, Darim suddenly knew what he had to do. It broke his heart to hear his mother sad over his not visiting, but he hoped this would make it up to her. And he knew their family was not the only one hurting.
It took time, almost the whole year, but he’d done it. Now to execute the plan. Knocking on the Auditore door, Darim bid Happy Holidays to Ezio, and, when Ezio asked what he was there for, Darim asked him to step outside. There, hidden just out of sight, was the rest of the Auditore family. Ezio staggered, disbelief on his face, tears in his eyes as his father took him in his arms, and his brothers hugged him. Claudia, upon wondering what was taking him so long, screamed at the sight, and ran into her mother’s arms. Yusuf and Desmond watched with huge smiles at the door. Darim headed to the next house.
Demetri, one of Arno’s friends, opened the door, and Darim asked for both Arno and Elise. “What a beautiful, strong woman you’ve turned into.” Her father said, and Elise dropped Arno’s hand to leap into her father’s embrace. Burying her face in his neck.
“I knew you’d figure it out, Arno.” Charles Dorian took his silent son’s hand, and pulled him into a hug. “I am so sorry I wasn’t there to guide you, but I see you did just right without me.”
“Papa!” Arno cried.
Aya and Bayek were the scariest to face as Darim was nervous of how they’d take it. Aya pushed her husband out of the way when Darim knocked the door with her son. Bayek leapt to his feet, holding his wife and child. Darim had never seen him dance before.
Myrrine was a wonderful woman and kept calling Darim ‘lamb’. His own mother called him little sheep, on account of his curly hair, so the words were sweet to hear. Her husband said little, just shifted side to side, and Stentor entertained Darium was jokes and snide remarks. Upon opening the door, Kassandra and Alexios wrapped their mother in a hug, holding hands, then begged Darim to stay with their family for the night. Unfortunately, he had more work to do, he’d told them, and off he went.
This one wanted to do it their way. Knocking on the Kenway door, Edward answered. “What? Not going to invite me in, Kenway?” Edward stared, the blood drained from his face, his mouth agap. “After all I’ve done for you, you’re gonna muck up my sassy lines.” Mary Read’s voice carried amusement and Edward’s face went red as the tears began. Taking her into his arms, Edward lifted her off the ground and gave her a whirl. Connor, his parents, and Adewale peeked from the door, and then Connor ran down the steps.
Kanen’to:kon had barely time to brace himself before Connor tackled him into a hug. “Put me down, Kenway!” Mary complained, but Darim didn’t see her fight him off. “Put me down before I box ya ears!”
“Ratonhkhake:ton!” Kanen’to:kon was lifted a foot off the ground, and looked queasy. “You know how I feel about heights!”
The last house gave him the most pause. “Are you sure?” The young boy beside him asked, and Darim knocked. The glow of the fireplace told him someone was awake, but he couldn’t image who it could be until his father stood before him. “Darim?” A smile brightened his face when he saw his eldest, “Little Sheep, you came home?” Darim sidestepped, and Altair’s smile dropped.
Darim had never seen his father cry, couldn’t even picture it, so when tears ran like rivers down his face as Altair slowly descended the steps, Darim didn’t know what to do. “Sef?” Altair’s voice barely above a whisper, like if he spoke too loud the image would evaporate and his heart would be broken again. The boy looked awkwardly down, like a boy in trouble. “Sef?!” Altair collapsed at his youngest son’s feet and hugged him, held him close, and sobbed. His body racked, and Sef wrapped his arms around his dad, crying too. “Sef!”
“I’m sorry I didn’t come home right away. I thought you’d be mad at me.”
“I could never...” Altair couldn’t form the words. Sensing something amiss, Malik was next at the door and his face went from shocked to crying like Altair. “Sef? Tazim?!” Malik’s son rushed to him and Malik took him in, crying. “My son! My son!”
Maria had now appeared, and upon seeing Altair, ran, screaming, and threw her arms around Sef. Tears rolling down Darim’s face only fell harder as Altair pulled him down, bringing Malik and Tazim in with them. The family finally whole. It was a Merry Christmas indeed.
Calling Out to Assassins Creed artists lacking a muse!
I am in a pickle as I have no motivation to draw yet I still have the mischievous art bunnies attacking. I have noticed that there is a severe lack of Desmond x such and such art. Sure there is Desmond with his three assassin ancestors, and Desmond with Shaun. Nevermind Protocreed. But what about some of the rarer pairings? So below the cut I present a challenge. If you are interested keep reading if not then keep on scrolling.
For the remainder of August (and if this is successful maybe continue next year) I challenge you to draw any one (or more if you are interested) of the following:
Desmond X Shay (18th century)
Desmond X Claudia (15th century)
Desmond X Malik (12th century)
Desmond X Kadar (12th century)
Desmond X Leonardo (15th century)
Desmond X Kassandra (431 BCE)
Desmond X Evior (9th century)
You are free to draw them however you like. Modern day offers you the most freedom however if you want a challenge I provided the century in which the principle game the character features takes place. You are free to draw them enjoying each other's company, Safe For Work sexual themes (such as holding hands, kissing, and hugging), or NSFW Content (please label as such as well as adhere to Tumblr's rules regarding it.) please use the tag #DesmondMiles'summeroflove and @fromashesweriseuphiddenones (me) to participate.
Lastly, want some bonus points? Include any the following:
Desmond and his lover will exchange pendants instead of engagement rings, and then lace the wedding band on the same chain. This is because Desmond works in the food service industry and they are very picky about rings and other jewelry.
Desmond's symbol is a Phoenix. Shay gives the Irish tree of life, Malik a sword charm, Leonardo found a pendant with simiprecious stone pieces inside.
Remember that Desmond is not full on white. The fandom agrees he is biracial. His mother is likely as pure Syrian as you are going to get (Altaïr is already biracial himself and then Darium and Sef were as well.)
Read any of my fics from AO3 if you want specific secen ideas or inspiration (like Desmond and Malik laying together in bed in their sleepwear)
Regardless of the era, Desmond is going to wear as close to Levant Robes as possible (if he is with Evior, Malik and Kadar he's going to have tailor made robes)
Lastly just have fun with this. By the way, just because I challenged you to this, doesn't mean that it's just for Tumblr. If it turns out you really like a piece you did go ahead and share it! I want people to find art when they go looking for it.
Safety and Peace upon you my siblings of the Creed, and May the Father of Understanding Guide Us.
THE FIRST BOOK OF ESDRAS OR EZRA - From The Douay-Rheims Bible - Latin Vulgate
Chapter 5
INTRODUCTION.
This Book taketh its name from the writer, who was a holy priest and doctor of the law. He is called by the Hebrews Ezra, (Ch.) and was son, (T.) or rather, unless he lived above 150 years, a descendant of Saraias. 4 K. xxv. 18. It is thought that he returned first with Zorobabel; and again, at the head of other captives, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes Longimanus, with ample authority. Esdras spent the latter part of his life in exhorting the people, and in explaining to them the law of God. He appeared with great dignity at the dedication of the walls of Jerusalem. 2 Esd. xii. 26. 35. We have four books which bear his name. C. --- This and the following book of Nehemias, originally made but one in Heb. (S. Jerom, &c.) as the transactions of both those great men are recorded. The third and fourth are not in Heb. nor received into the canon of the Holy Scriptures, though the Greek Church hold the third as canonical, and place it first; (W.) and Genebrard would assert that both ought to be received, as they were by several Fathers. But they contain many thing which appear to be erroneous, and have been rejected by others of great authority, and particularly by S. Jerom. The third book seems to have been written very early, by some Hellenist Jew, who was desirous of embellishing the history of Zorobabel; and the fourth was probably composed by some person of the same nation, who had been converted to Christianity, before the end of the second century; and who injudiciously attempted to convert his brethren, by assuming the name of a man who was so much respected. Many things have been falsely attributed to Esdras, on the same account. It is said that he invented the Masora; restored the Scriptures, which had been lost; fixed the canon of twenty-two books; substituted the Chaldaic characters instead of the ancient Hebrew, Samaritan, or Phœnician. But though Esdras might sanction the latter, now become common, the characters might vary insensibly, (Bianconi. Kennicott, Dis. ii.) as those of other languages have done, (H.) and the sacred books never perished wholly; nor could the canon be determined in the time of Esdras. C. --- As for the Masoretic observations and points, they are too modern an invention. Elias Levita, Capel. Houbigant, &c. --- What we know more positively of Esdras, is, (W.) that he was empowered by Artaxerxes to bring back the Jews, and that he acted with great zeal. H. --- This book contains the transactions of 82 years, till A. 3550. The letter of Reum, and the king's answer, (C. iv. 7. till C. vi. 19. and well as C. vii. 12, 27.) are in Chaldee; the rest of the work is in Hebrew. Chapter 5
By the exhortation of Aggeus, and Zacharias, the people proceed in building the temple. Which their enemies strive in vain to hinder.
[1] Now Aggeus the prophet, and Zacharias the son of Addo, prophesied to the Jews that were in Judea and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel.
Prophetaverunt autem Aggaeus propheta, et Zacharias filius Addo, prophetantes ad Judaeos, qui erant in Judaea et Jerusalem, in nomine Dei Israel.
[2] Then rose up Zorobabel the son of Salathiel, and Josue the son of Josedec, and began to build the temple of God in Jerusalem, and with them were the prophets of God helping them.
Tunc surrexerunt Zorobabel filius Salathiel, et Josue filius Josedec, et coeperunt aedificare templum Dei in Jerusalem, et cum eis prophetae Dei adjuvantes eos.
[3] And at the same time came to them Thathanai, who was governor beyond the river, and Stharbuzanai, and their counsellors: and said thus to them: Who hath given you counsel to build this house, and to repair the walls thereof?
In ipso autem tempore venit ad eos Thathanai, qui erat dux trans flumen, et Stharbuzanai, et consiliarii eorum : sicque dixerunt eis : Quis dedit vobis consilium ut domum hanc aedificaretis, et muros ejus instauraretis?
[4] In answer to which we gave them the names of the men who were the promoters of that building.
Ad quod respondimus eis, quae essent nomina hominum auctorum aedificationis illius.
[5] But the eye of their God was upon the ancients of the Jews, and they could not hinder them. And it was agreed that the matter should be referred to Darius, and then they should give satisfaction concerning that accusation.
Oculus autem Dei eorum factus est super senes Judaeorum, et non potuerunt inhibere eos. Placuique ut res ad Darium referretur, et tunc satisfacerent adversus accusationem illam.
[6] The copy of the letter that Thathanai governor of the country beyond the river, and Stharbuzanai, and his counsellors the Arphasachites, who dwelt beyond the river, sent to Darius the king.
Exemplar epistolae, quam misit Thathanai dux regionis trans flumen, et Stharbuzanai, et consiliatores ejus Arphasachaei, qui erant trans flumen, ad Darium regem.
[7] The letter which they sent him, was written thus: To Darius the king all peace.
Sermo, quem miserant ei, sic scriptus erat : Dario regi pax omnis.
[8] Be it known to the king, that we went to the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which they are building with unpolished stones, and timber is laid in the walls: and this work is carried on diligently, and advanceth in their hands.
Notum sit regi, isse nos ad Judaeam provinciam, ad domum Dei magni, quae aedificatur lapide impolito, et ligna ponuntur in parietibus : opusque illud diligenter exstruitur, et crescit in manibus eorum.
[9] And we asked those ancients, and said to them thus: Who hath given you authority to build this house, and to repair these walls?
Interrogavimus ergo senes illos, et ita diximus eis : Quis dedit vobis potestatem ut domum hanc aedificaretis, et muros hos instauraretis?
[10] We asked also of them their names, that we might give thee notice: and we have written the names of the men that are the chief among them.
Sed et nomina eorum quaesivimus ab eis, ut nuntiaremus tibi : scripsimusque nomina eorum virorum, qui sunt principes in eis.
[11] And they answered us in these words, saying: We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are building a temple that was built these many years ago, and which a great king of Israel built and set up.
Hujuscemodi autem sermonem responderunt nobis dicentes : Nos sumus servi Dei caeli et terrae, et aedificamus templum, quod erat exstructum ante hos annos multos, quodque rex Israel magnus aedificaverat, et exstruxerat.
[12] But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he delivered them into the hands of Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon the Chaldean: and he destroyed this house, and carried away the people to Babylon.
Postquam autem ad iracundiam provocaverunt patres nostri Deum caeli, tradidit eos in manus Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis Chaldaei, domum quoque hanc destruxit, et populum ejus transtulit in Babylonem.
[13] But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon, king Cyrus set forth a decree, that this house of God should be built.
Anno autem primo Cyri regis Babylonis, Cyrus rex proposuit edictum ut domus Dei haec aedificaretur.
[14] And the vessels also of gold and silver of the temple of God, which Nabuchodonosor had taken out of the temple, that was in Jerusalem, and had brought them to the temple of Babylon, king Cyrus brought out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one Sassabasar, whom also he appointed governor,
Nam et vasa templi Dei aurea et argentea, quae Nabuchodonosor tulerat de templo, quod erat in Jerusalem, et asportaverat ea in templum Babylonis, protulit Cyrus rex de templo Babylonis, et data sunt Sassabasar vocabulo, quem et principem constituit,
[15] And said to him: Take these vessels, and go, and put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be built in its place.
dixitque ei : Haec vasa tolle, et vade, et pone ea in templo, quod est in Jerusalem, et domus Dei aedificetur in loco suo.
[16] Then came this same Sassabasar, and laid the foundations of the temple of God in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it is in building, and is not yet finished.
Tunc itaque Sassabasar ille venit et posuit fundamenta templi Dei in Jerusalem, et ex eo tempore usque nunc aedificatur, et necdum completum est.
[17] Now therefore if it seem good to the king, let him search in the king's library, which is in Babylon, whether it hath been decreed by Cyrus the king, that the house of God in Jerusalem should be built, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
Nunc ergo, si videtur regi bonum recenseat in bibliotheca regis, quae est in Babylone, utrumnam a Cyro rege jussum fuerit ut aedificaretur domus Dei in Jerusalem, et voluntatem regis super hac re mittat ad nos.
Commentary:
Ver. 1. Addo was grand-father of the prophet, whose writings are extant. C. --- Both prophesied in the second year of Darius. M.
Ver. 2. Them. Aggeus had rebuked the people for building houses for themselves, while they neglected the temple. The work was hereupon resumed without any fresh order from the king; as the edicts of the usurper, Oropastes, were considered as null, and the Jews only answer the governor, that they had been authorized by Cyrus, v. 13. 17. Josephus, and 3 Esd. iii. and iv. 47. assert that Darius had given leave. C. M.
Ver. 3. River, over all Syria, &c. This man had not been bribed, but acted with great moderation, and in compliance with his duty. C. --- Counsel. Chal. "order...to make up this wall."
Ver. 4. In. Sept. "Then I (or they; eipon. The Syr. and Arab. declare for the latter) said thus to them: What," &c. --- We gave. Chal. "what are the names?" H. --- It seems Thathanai asked this question, v. 10. The Jews might give in the names of Zorobabel, Josue, Aggeus, &c. C.
Ver. 5. Ancients. Sept. "captivity of Juda." H. --- Divine Providence favoured the undertaking. Delrio adag. 216. M. Ps. xxxii. 18. --- His eye sometimes threatens ruin. Amos ix. 8. C. --- God did both on this occasion. W. --- Hinder. Chal. "cause them to leave off, till the matter came to Darius, (H.) and his decision was brought back;" (C.) or Prot. "and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter." Sept. "and they did not molest them, till the sentence should be brought to (or from) Darius; and then it (word) was sent to the tax-gatherer, concerning this affair."
Ver. 8. Unpolished. Prot. "great." H. --- Heb. "to be rolled." See Vitruv. x. 6. Sept. "choice stones." Kimchi, &c. "marble." C. --- 3 Esd. "polished and precious stones." H. --- Yet the Vulg. seems more conformable to C. vi. 4. and Agg. ii. 2. M. Ribera. --- Walls, every fourth course. 3 K. vi. 36. C.
Ver. 13. Built. It did not appear that this edict had been revoked; (C.) nor could it be changed, if it had been passed by the advice of the Lord. H.
Ver. 14. Governor. Sept. "over the treasury."
Ver. 16. In building, being pretty far advanced, though for some time past it had been at a stand. H. --- It is not probable that Zorobabel said this, but the author of the letter added it, as he supposed the Jews continued to do some little. C. - He desired to favour their cause, yet so as not to irritate the Samaritans. M.
Ver. 17. Library. Sept. "treasury-house." Arab. "for the archives." It is called "the house of books." C. vi. 1. C.
