see the cloud is an example of "everything becoming a goddamned subscription service" but actually good. why pay for a new laptop if i need a specific os or amount of computing power for a class when i can just. use a virtual machine in the cloud for 3 months then deprovision everything at the end of class
#very useful for all types of shit.#i used it to run a linux server and a windows server for 2 courses#the windows server is the more costly option traditionally- you'd need a licence and hardware for it! students cant really procure that!#even the linux server was better in the cloud bc we could practice mounting disks and running it as a web server and stuff#and all of it was easier to get students to set up bc the cloud provider dashboards looked and acted the same for all of us!#txt

Quick Tumblr Backup Guide (Linux)
Go to www.tumblr.com/oauth/apps and click the "Register Application" button
Fill in the form. I used the following values for the required fields: Application Name - tumblr-arch Application Website - https://github.com/Cebtenzzre/tumblr-utils Application Description - tumblr archival instance based on tumblr-utils Adminstrative contact email - < my personal email > Default callback URL - https://github.com/Cebtenzzre/tumblr-utils OAuth2 redirect URLs - https://github.com/Cebtenzzre/tumblr-utils
Get the OAuth Consumer Key for your application. It should be listed right on the www.tumblr.com/oauth/apps page.
Do python things:
# check python version: python --version # I've got Python 3.9.9 # create a venv: python -m venv --prompt tumblr-bkp --upgrade-deps venv # activate the venv: source venv/bin/activate # install dependencies: pip install tumblr-backup pip install tumblr-backup[video] pip install tumblr-backup[jq] pip install tumblr-backup[bs4] # Check dependencies are all installed: pip freeze # set the api key: tumblr-backup --set-api-key <OAuth Consumer Key>
So far I have backed up two blogs using the following:
tumblr-backup --save-audio --save-video --tag-index --save-notes --incremental -j --no-post-clobber --media-list <blog name>
There have been two issues I had to deal with so far:
one of the blogs was getting a "Non-OK API repsonse: HTTP 401 Unauthorized". It further stated that "This is a dashboard-only blog, so you probably don't have the right cookies. Try --cookiefile." I resolved the issue by a) setting the "Hide from people without an account" to off and b) enabling a custom theme. I think only step a) was actually necessary though.
"Newly registered consumers are rate limited to 1,000 requests per hour, and 5,000 requests per day. If your application requires more requests for either of these periods, please use the 'Request rate limit removal' link on an app above." Depending on how big your blog is, you may need to break up the download. I suspect using the "-n COUNT" or "--count COUNT" to save only COUNT posts at a time, combined with the "--incremental" will allow you to space things out. You would have to perform multiple passes though. I will have to play with that, so I'll report back my findings.

Not to shill for Dashboard Unfucker, but it allows you to do this before you vote
and while it wont show you exactly the ratio, it will once you vote/ the poll ends
this, and many more are features you can toggle, incase you just want it for the one poll or all of them :)
honestly the worst thing about tumblrs poll feature is that after you've voted and can see the poll results, there's no way to screenshot it without revealing exactly what you voted for.
this means I cannot share things like the dnd smash or pass results with my friends who don't have tumblrs because then they'd know things like weather I think a centaur or a dragon is hotter, and I can't just like reveal that information to people
#this is not a paid promotion for Dashboard Unfucker. i just like the product.#also i prefer windows. sorry. i brick every linux os i try to run...

tell me abt your fucked up laptop
Oh god where do I even begin.

It looks normal at first glance, but this thing has been through hell.
I've easily had this laptop for over a decade at this point. I can't remember when I got it- 2014 or 2015 I think. When I first got it it was pretty beefy for the time but it's definitely showing its age now. It's pretty heavy and sturdy- I've definitely dropped it once or twice.
This thing got me through all of college. It worked well for a while, but in 2018 the hard drive died. To this day I'm convinced that a Windows update is what bricked it. Thankfully I was able to get the hard drive replaced on very short notice because I was literally leaving for an internship the next week. It behaved for the duration of the internship.
At some point the screen started to malfunction- it behaved for the picture I took, but it likes to randomly flicker and even cut out entirely. It eventually got so bad that I stopped taking it places with me, and I just hooked it up to an external monitor and keyboard on my desk.
I eventually had to replace both the power cable and battery because it was neither charging nor holding charge. That worked well for a while, but eventually that battery died as well. It currently has no battery, and is directly hooked up to wall power. If I unplug it, it instantly dies.
At some point during all this, Windows forced an update to Windows 10, which absolutely throttled this poor thing's performance. I think it might have actually shipped with Windows 7 but it's been ten years and I honestly cannot even remember. Either way, it was already chugging on Windows 8, and 10 wasn't much better. I think updating this laptop to Windows 11 will actually kill it.
At this point it permanently lives on my desk as a glorified desktop computer. I don't even keep the lid open anymore. The few times I've tried to lift or move it while it's turned on, it will decide to randomly freeze or shut down, so I try not to touch it.
I'm absolutely terrified that the hard drive will randomly die again, so I also have this laptop permanently hooked up to an external hard drive that backs up the entire computer on a regular basis.
Oh, and among all of these other issues, a few weeks ago it randomly started making some very loud and concerning noises upon startup. They eventually die down though so I'm ignoring it.
TL;DR, my laptop is actively dying and is basically hooked up to permanent life support. I refuse to let it die, at least until I can afford a new computer.
I have a second low-spec laptop that was given to me a while ago for free because it basically didn't work- it was trying to run Windows 10 and literally took more than 45 minutes to boot up. That's not an exaggeration. When it did boot up, it ran so slowly that it was basically unusable. I couldn't even use it to check my email. So basically I was allowed to keep it if I could even get it to work in the first place, it was going to be thrown out otherwise.
I was able to revive it by wiping it and installing Linux (Lubuntu, a lightweight version of Ubuntu, to be specific) on it, and now it works perfectly fine. When I actually need a portable laptop for something I just use my Linux laptop instead.
When I finally get a proper PC I fully intend to wipe my Windows laptop and install Linux on it the exact same way, just to squeeze a few more years out of it if possible. I will not allow this thing to die on my watch.
(P.S. Before anyone asks, I use Stylus for my custom tumblr dashboard theme. I use the Old Tumblr Dashboard and Custom Background themes.)
#this is the thing I play rain world on!#and draw with. and blog from#my laptop's life is a living hell#asks#personal

The nightmare is those that stubbornly do nothing, running an unsupported OS. And the latest Windows zero-day confirmed in this weekâs Patch Tuesday should give you all the motivation you need not to be in that group. Predictably, CVE-2025-29824 has now made CISAâs roguesâ gallery of known exploited vulnerabilities, with a mandated (for federal employees at least) update deadline of April 29.
This is a âuse-after-free vulnerability that allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locallyâ and which Microsoft warns is being exploited in multiple countries around the world, including the U.S. Confusingly, Microsoftâs advisory accompanying Patch Tuesdayâs updates seemed to suggest Windows 10 users were missing out on this critical fix. But thatâs only for those with outdated versions of the OS.
As Windows Latest told me, âMicrosoft put out a confusing advisory that implied that the patch for CVE-2025-29824 isnât available for Windows 10. The advisory dashboard clearly states that âThe security update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems and Windows 10 for 32-bit Systems are not immediately available⊠That only applies to Windows 10 LTSB 2015, and all supported and newer versions of Windows 10, including Pro Edition have been patched.â
But itâs not all good news. Windows Latest has discovered that Microsoftâs latest Windows 10 update âbegins testing the removal of one basic feature from the operating system: clock with seconds in the Calendar⊠I donât think weâll go back to how things were originally because Windows 10 isnât the focus at Microsoft anymore, and it probably wonât consider the feedback."
More worryingly, Windows Latest also warns that âit looks like KB5002700 is completely botched up because it not only breaks Outlook Calendar but also crashes Word and Excel when you try to create a new document or spreadsheet.â This only applies to Office 2016, but âpeople on Windows 10 typically use it.â
[source]
so not only are they trying to scare tactic us into upgrading to windows 11 right now by trying to make us think weâre not getting major security updates anymore when we are, but theyâre stealth breaking windows systems like the clock, outlook, word and excel to pressure us into upgrading sooner rather than later.
tell me why we shouldnât just move to linux when windows 11 has been known to be unsafe, buggy and causing issues like BSoDs, and even as recently as the end of march itâs still got major reported issues that havenât been patched out, including issues like potentially blue screen of deathing people trying to play games with easy anti cheat (like dead by daylight or elden ring), which as far as i can tell are still present now in april⊠trying to fear-monger us into updating asap to something thatâs gained a reputation for being dodgy (and bad for gaming on). thanks but no thanks

Exploring the Realm of cPanel Hosting in Australia: A Comprehensive Guide
In the vast digital landscape of Australia, where businesses thrive and online presence is paramount, finding the right hosting solution is akin to selecting a foundation for a skyscraper. In this digital age, where websites serve as the face of enterprises, the choice of hosting can significantly impact performance, user experience, and ultimately, the success of ventures. Among the plethora of options, cPanel hosting stands out as a popular choice for its user-friendly interface, robust features, and reliability. But what exactly is cPanel hosting, and why is it gaining traction among businesses in Australia?

Understanding cPanel Hosting
What is cPanel hosting?
cPanel hosting is a type of web hosting that utilizes the cPanel control panel, a web-based interface that simplifies website and server management tasks. It provides users with a graphical interface and automation tools, allowing them to effortlessly manage various aspects of their website, such as file management, email accounts, domain settings, databases, and more.
How does cPanel Hosting Work?
At its core, cPanel hosting operates on a Linux-based server environment, leveraging technologies like Apache, MySQL, and PHP (LAMP stack). The cPanel interface acts as a centralized hub, enabling users to perform administrative tasks through a user-friendly dashboard, accessible via any web browser.
Benefits of cPanel Hosting
User-Friendly Interface
One of the primary advantages of cPanel hosting is its intuitive interface, designed to accommodate users of all skill levels. With its graphical layout and straightforward navigation, even those with minimal technical expertise can manage their websites efficiently.
Comprehensive Feature Set
From creating email accounts to installing applications like WordPress and Magento, cPanel offers a wide array of features designed to streamline website management. Users can easily configure domains, set up security measures, and monitor website performance, and much more, all from within the cPanel dashboard.
Reliability and Stability
cPanel hosting is renowned for its stability and reliability, thanks to its robust architecture and frequent updates. With features like automated backups, server monitoring, and security enhancements, users can rest assured that their websites are in safe hands.
Scalability and Flexibility
Whether you're running a small blog or managing a large e-commerce platform, cPanel hosting can scale to meet your needs. With options for upgrading resources and adding additional features as your website grows, cPanel offers the flexibility required to adapt to evolving business requirements.
Choosing the Right cPanel Hosting Provider
Factors to Consider
When selecting a cPanel hosting provider in Australia, several factors should be taken into account to ensure optimal performance and reliability:
Server Location: Choose a provider with servers located in Australia to minimize latency and ensure fast loading times for local visitors.
Performance: Look for providers that offer high-performance hardware, SSD storage, and ample resources to support your website's needs.
Uptime Guarantee: Opt for providers with a proven track record of uptime, ideally offering a minimum uptime guarantee of 99.9%.
Customer Support: Evaluate the level of customer support offered, ensuring prompt assistance in case of technical issues or inquiries.
Conclusion
In conclusion, cPanel hosting serves as a cornerstone for businesses seeking reliable and user-friendly cpanel hosting Australia. With its intuitive interface, comprehensive feature set, and robust architecture, cPanel empowers users to manage their websites with ease, allowing them to focus on their core business objectives.

Okay, changed from one version of Firefox to another for Linux reasons, and did a new login into tumblr, and now I got the new hideous dashboard look. Don't regret what I did exactly, but nasty surprise nevertheless.
(the linux reasons is that the distro I'm using, Debian deliberately ships the extended support release of Firefox, which is not frequently updated except for security reasons and is multiple version numbers behind the regular version. They do this because Debian in general follows that update schedule, because they focus on system stability. So feature updates don't happen until they have been thoroughly tested for any bugs. This is good, I like this philosophy of debian in general, and Firefox ESR is fine.
But I have installed flatpak capability on my version of debian. Flatpak is an alternative format for software packages for linux, which are more frequently updated than debian's own .deb software packages. And so I installed firefox as a flatpak to get a more up to date version with regular updates. Due to how flatpaks work and handle dependencies, these updates are unlike to cause any major issue on my system, so it's generally safe to install flatpaks, at least from trusted sources like Mozilla. and I'll keep the ESR version of Firefox as a backup.)
