itâs sometimes frustrating when people respond to posts lamenting like, the fact that every news article is paywalled or every social media site is overrun by reactionaries or that all recipe websites are impossible to use because theyâre covered in malicious ads or etc with âhereâs a site that gets rid of those paywalls!â âinstall this recipe-unfucker browser extension on your computer!â âjust join [obscure social media site that no one uses] or [dead forum]!â like I get the intent, I donât take it as like malicious derailing or anything, and I even understanding wanting to spread resources to people esp adblocker resources. but this pattern of response in the aggregate feels like itâs fundamentally missing the point on some level - it is infuriating that you canât spend an hour on social media without being reminded that the world viscerally hates you and wants you dead for the crime of being a minority, it is infuriating that youâre constantly condescended to about the âdangers of disinformationâ by the same professional class that paywalls every single piece of data from the public, it is infuriating that the internet is rapidly approaching a point of total unusability for the express purpose of further lining a billionaireâs pockets, and no browser extension or obscure discord clone is going to fix that. These are structural problems and I think people are using these things as examples to complain about these structures, and it sometimes feels like people are missing that point when they post a link to a mozilla-only browser extension. it feels like unwanted advice to a problem that is already unsolveable via individual solutions. often it borders on patronising, as if people arenât aware they can log off tumblr and post on a Web 2.0 forum that 1000 people collectively use or havenât heard of the concept of an adblocker. but again like what else are you supposed to do the next time you want to look up a chili recipe or watch cat videos online or read the news. sucks ass

Libraries have traditionally operated on a basic premise: Once they purchase a book, they can lend it out to patrons as much (or as little) as they like. Library copies often come from publishers, but they can also come from donations, used book sales, or other libraries. However the library obtains the book, once the library legally owns it, it is theirs to lend as they see fit. Not so for digital books. To make licensed e-books available to patrons, libraries have to pay publishers multiple times over. First, they must subscribe (for a fee) to aggregator platforms such as Overdrive. Aggregators, like streaming services such as HBOâs Max, have total control over adding or removing content from their catalogue. Content can be removed at any time, for any reason, without input from your local library. The decision happens not at the community level but at the corporate one, thousands of miles from the patrons affected. Then libraries must purchase each individual copy of each individual title that they want to offer as an e-book. These e-book copies are not only priced at a steep markupâup to 300% over consumer retailâbut are also time- and loan-limited, meaning the files self-destruct after a certain number of loans. The library then needs to repurchase the same book, at a new price, in order to keep it in stock. This upending of the traditional order puts massive financial strain on libraries and the taxpayers that fund them. It also opens up a world of privacy concerns; while libraries are restricted in the reader data they can collect and share, private companies are under no such obligation. Some libraries have turned to another solution: controlled digital lending, or CDL, a process by which a library scans the physical books it already has in its collection, makes secure digital copies, and lends those out on a one-to-one âowned to loanedâ ratio. The Internet Archive was an early pioneer of this technique. When the digital copy is loaned, the physical copy is sequestered from borrowing; when the physical copy is checked out, the digital copy becomes unavailable. The benefits to libraries are obvious; delicate books can be circulated without fear of damage, volumes can be moved off-site for facilities work without interrupting patron access, and older and endangered works become searchable and can get a second chance at life. Library patrons, who fund their local libraryâs purchases with their tax dollars, also benefit from the ability to freely access the books. Publishers are, unfortunately, not a fan of this model, and in 2020 four of them sued the Internet Archive over its CDL program. The suit ultimately focused on the Internet Archiveâs lending of 127 books that were already commercially available through licensed aggregators. The publisher plaintiffs accused the Internet Archive of mass copyright infringement, while the Internet Archive argued that its digitization and lending program was a fair use. The trial court sided with the publishers, and on September 4, the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reaffirmed that decision with some alterations to the underlying reasoning. This decision harms libraries. It locks them into an e-book ecosystem designed to extract as much money as possible while harvesting (and reselling) reader data en masse. It leaves local communitiesâ reading habits at the mercy of curatorial decisions made by four dominant publishing companies thousands of miles away. It steers Americans away from one of the few remaining bastions of privacy protection and funnels them into a surveillance ecosystem that, like Big Tech, becomes more dangerous with each passing data breach. And by increasing the price for access to knowledge, it puts up even more barriers between underserved communities and the American dream.

These days, when Nicole Yelland receives a meeting request from someone she doesnât already know, she conducts a multi-step background check before deciding whether to accept. Yelland, who works in public relations for a Detroit-based non-profit, says sheâll run the personâs information through Spokeo, a personal data aggregator that she pays a monthly subscription fee to use. If the contact claims to speak Spanish, Yelland says, she will casually test their ability to understand and translate trickier phrases. If something doesnât quite seem right, sheâll ask the person to join a Microsoft Teams callâwith their camera on.
If Yelland sounds paranoid, thatâs because she is. In January, before she started her current non-profit role, Yelland says she got roped into an elaborate scam targeting job seekers. âNow, I do the whole verification rigamarole any time someone reaches out to me,â she tells WIRED.
Digital imposter scams arenât new; messaging platforms, social media sites, and dating apps have long been rife with fakery. In a time when remote work and distributed teams have become commonplace, professional communications channels are no longer safe, either. The same artificial intelligence tools that tech companies promise will boost worker productivity are also making it easier for criminals and fraudsters to construct fake personas in seconds.
On LinkedIn, it can be hard to distinguish a slightly touched-up headshot of a real person from a too-polished, AI-generated facsimile. Deepfake videos are getting so good that longtime email scammers are pivoting to impersonating people on live video calls. According to the US Federal Trade Commission, reports of job and employment related scams nearly tripled from 2020 to 2024, and actual losses from those scams have increased from $90 million to $500 million.
Yelland says the scammers that approached her back in January were impersonating a real company, one with a legitimate product. The âhiring managerâ she corresponded with over email also seemed legit, even sharing a slide deck outlining the responsibilities of the role they were advertising. But during the first video interview, Yelland says, the scammers refused to turn their cameras on during a Microsoft Teams meeting and made unusual requests for detailed personal information, including her driverâs license number. Realizing sheâd been duped, Yelland slammed her laptop shut.
These kinds of schemes have become so widespread that AI startups have emerged promising to detect other AI-enabled deepfakes, including GetReal Labs, and Reality Defender. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also runs an identity-verification startup called Tools for Humanity, which makes eye-scanning devices that capture a personâs biometric data, create a unique identifier for their identity, and store that information on the blockchain. The whole idea behind it is proving âpersonhood,â or that someone is a real human. (Lots of people working on blockchain technology say that blockchain is the solution for identity verification.)
But some corporate professionals are turning instead to old-fashioned social engineering techniques to verify every fishy-seeming interaction they have. Welcome to the Age of Paranoia, when someone might ask you to send them an email while youâre mid-conversation on the phone, slide into your Instagram DMs to ensure the LinkedIn message you sent was really from you, or request you text a selfie with a timestamp, proving you are who you claim to be. Some colleagues say they even share code words with each other, so they have a way to ensure theyâre not being misled if an encounter feels off.
âWhatâs funny is, the low-fi approach works,â says Daniel Goldman, a blockchain software engineer and former startup founder. Goldman says he began changing his own behavior after he heard a prominent figure in the crypto world had been convincingly deepfaked on a video call. âIt put the fear of god in me,â he says. Afterwards, he warned his family and friends that even if they hear what they believe is his voice or see him on a video call asking for something concreteâlike money or an internet passwordâthey should hang up and email him first before doing anything.
Ken Schumacher, founder of the recruitment verification service Ropes, says heâs worked with hiring managers who ask job candidates rapid-fire questions about the city where they claim to live on their resume, such as their favorite coffee shops and places to hang out. If the applicant is actually based in that geographic region, Schumacher says, they should be able to respond quickly with accurate details.
Another verification tactic some people use, Schumacher says, is what he calls the âphone camera trick.â If someone suspects the person theyâre talking to over video chat is being deceitful, they can ask them to hold up their phone camera to their laptop. The idea is to verify whether the individual may be running deepfake technology on their computer, obscuring their true identity or surroundings. But itâs safe to say this approach can also be off-putting: Honest job candidates may be hesitant to show off the inside of their homes or offices, or worry a hiring manager is trying to learn details about their personal lives.
âEveryone is on edge and wary of each other now,â Schumacher says.
While turning yourself into a human captcha may be a fairly effective approach to operational security, even the most paranoid admit these checks create an atmosphere of distrust before two parties have even had the chance to really connect. They can also be a huge time suck. âI feel like somethingâs gotta give,â Yelland says. âIâm wasting so much time at work just trying to figure out if people are real.â
Jessica Eise, an assistant professor studying climate change and social behavior at Indiana University-Bloomington, says that her research team has been forced to essentially become digital forensics experts, due to the amount of fraudsters who respond to ads for paid virtual surveys. (Scammers arenât as interested in the unpaid surveys, unsurprisingly.) If the research project is federally funded, all of the online participants have to be over the age of 18 and living in the US.
âMy team would check time stamps for when participants answered emails, and if the timing was suspicious, we could guess they might be in a different time zone,â Eise says. âThen weâd look for other clues we came to recognize, like certain formats of email address or incoherent demographic data.â
Eise says the amount of time her team spent screening people was âexorbitant,â and that theyâve now shrunk the size of the cohort for each study and have turned to âsnowball samplingâ or having recruiting people they know personally to join their studies. The researchers are also handing out more physical flyers to solicit participants in person. âWe care a lot about making sure that our data has integrity, that weâre studying who we say weâre trying to study,â she says. âI donât think thereâs an easy solution to this.â
Barring any widespread technical solution, a little common sense can go a long way in spotting bad actors. Yelland shared with me the slide deck that she received as part of the fake job pitch. At first glance, it seemed like legit pitch, but when she looked at it again, a few details stood out. The job promised to pay substantially more than the average salary for a similar role in her location, and offered unlimited vacation time, generous paid parental leave, and fully-covered health care benefits. In todayâs job environment, that might have been the biggest tipoff of all that it was a scam.

NSF-funded research heads to the international space station on NASA's SpaceX CRS-32 mission
ISS national lab-sponsored investigations aim to enhance drug manufacturing and develop new materials for aerospace, defense, energy, and robotics
Three investigations funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and sponsored by the International Space Station (ISSInternational Space Station) National Laboratory are launching on SpaceXâs 32nd Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) mission, contracted by NASANational Aeronautics and Space Administration. These experiments leverage the microgravityThe condition of perceived weightlessness created when an object is in free fall, for example when an object is in orbital motion. Microgravity alters many observable phenomena within the physical and life sciences, allowing scientists to study things in ways not possible on Earth. The International Space Station provides access to a persistent microgravity environment. environment to advance fundamental science that could lead to improved pharmaceutical manufacturing, new materials with valuable industrial applications, and the next generation of soft active materials with lifelike properties.
These projects build on a strong, multi-year collaboration between the ISS National Lab and NSF, which allocates millions of dollars to space-based projects within the fields of tissue engineering and transport phenomena, including fluid dynamics. To date, more than 30 projects funded by NSF and sponsored by the ISS National Lab have launched to the orbiting laboratory, with nearly 70 additional projects preparing for flight. Below are details about the three NSF-funded investigations launching on NASAâs SpaceX CRS-32.
Improving Medicine Manufacturing
An investigation by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), supported by Tec-Masters, builds on previous research to examine protein fluid flow and clumpingâa problem that occurs during manufacturing of protein-based pharmaceuticals that affects the quality of the drug.
âProteins are used to make various therapies and must be concentrated in medicines to avoid needing to administer large amounts of fluid,â says Amir Hirsa, professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering at RPI. âBut above a certain concentration, the proteins tend to form aggregates or clump.â
On Earth, studying protein behavior is complicated by interactions between the solution and the container used to hold it. But on the ISS, researchers can use the Ring-Sheared Drop module to form liquid into a self-contained sphere held between two rings.
Hirsa and his team can use this device to study protein motion and create more accurate models of the factors that lead to clumping, especially during drug manufacturing and dispensation to patients. The team also can test computer models that predict the behavior of proteins of vastly different concentrations and types, such as hormones and antibodies. Findings from this research could help uncover ways to avoid or reverse protein clumping, which would have a significant impact on the pharmaceutical industry.
âAnother very important aspect of this work is making this data, which is so difficult to get, available to other scientists through open data repositories,â says Joe Adam, a research scientist at RPI. âOther scientists may see something even more interesting than we do.â
Developing New Materials
An investigation from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, supported by Leidos, will examine the formation of ceramic composites, which have valuable applications in several industries, including aerospace, defense, and energy. The study focuses on polymer-derived titanium carbide and silicon carbide composites that have electrical conductivity, are stable at high temperature, can be made into almost any shape and size, and are lightweight yet strong.
âThese materials can be used in different extreme conditions, such as high temperatures and highly acidic or oxidative environments, where other materials become unstable or cannot survive,â says Kathy Lu, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.
Studying these composites in microgravity could reveal unique behaviors that cannot be replicated on Earth. Findings from this research could inform new techniques for ground- and space-based manufacturing of materials with specific properties for applications such as heat exchangers, electric systems, energy storage, electrodes, and microsystems.
âNobody has studied microgravityâs effects on these ceramics, and the results could be helpful for the broader family of ceramics and other possible additives, such as fibers and nanoscale materials,â Lu says.
Studying Active Matter
A research team at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) will leverage microgravity to study active matterâmicroscopic particles that use energy to produce motionâand its effects on the separation of non-mixable liquids. These liquids, such as oil and water, separate into concentrated droplets of one substance dispersed in the other, a phenomenon known as active liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS). This investigation, supported by Redwire Space Technologies, seeks a better understanding of active LLPS, which plays a key role in physics, materials science, engineering, and biology.
âActive fluids are made of billions of small molecular motors that push and pull on each other and generate a turbulent flow, like a windy day stirs the water on a beach,â says UCSB professor Zvonimir Dogic. âA long-term goal is using active matter in microfluidic devices to stir and control the separation of two substances. Weâre trying to create simplified systems that start to mimic biology.â
Active LLPS could be used to create materials with lifelike properties, such as the ability to move, change shape, and self-repair, that could be used to develop more lifelike robotics.
SpaceX CRS-32 is scheduled to launch no earlier than April 21, 2025, at 4:15 a.m., from Launch Complex 39A at NASAâs Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

A modest resume faxes through in standard 12-pt font. The format is dated, archaic even, showcasing the submitterâs age based on construction alone.
Starscream (of Vos)
â Alumni of Vosian Institute of Advanced Sciences with a focus in Data Analysis and minor in Astrophysics â Co-Principal Investigator on Aggregate Data Algorithms (dated Golden Age) â Elite Guard of Sentinel Prime â Decepticon Second-in-Command
Applying for the position of Analyst.Â
Attached are old research papers pulled from ancient archives on servers long destroyed: Codex Analysis and Improvement Process, Planetary and Star System Data Diffusion in Quantum Machines: Models Data to Generated Imagery, Data Management in Medium Machines. All authored by Starscream et al. associates at the time.Â
The cover letter is brief:
âIn addition to my published work that may or may not exist on the datanet anymore. I possess soft skills of leadership and management, however my talents reside in algorithmic analysis. This has always been a passion of mine, and it always will be.
âStarâ
A recruiter had handed Soundwave the resumé with a frown, "You gotta see this."
Soundwave merely hummed as it took the stack of papers, nodding in thanks. As it stalked back to its office, it began to rifle through the provided documents. It glanced over the cover letter, optics settling on the name at the bottom.
Star.
Oh, Primus. Soundwave had not expected Starscream to apply, let alone be a good candidate. It sat back in its chair, crossing a leg as it began to read over the papers.
They were complicated and full of industry standard jargon. It took Soundwave a good hour to read through them all. It wanted to really understand where Starscream's skill level was at. It needed to know whether or not it would even be worth putting him through the interview process.
Much to Soundwave's dismay, it would be.
If this resumé had belonged to anyone else, the interviews would not have been any sort of issue. The skill level here was top notch, obviously proven through the published papers. However, they were written by Starscream.
Soundwave had worked along side Starscream for milleniums. It knew how he operated inside and out- half of its job was to know. That alone left a bitter taste on its glossa. As much as Soundwave wanted to, it was hard to place their previous professional relationship aside.
Soundwave had worked too hard for this dream to come true. It dreaded the thought of having to be careful around its own employees, lest it find itself being ousted from its own position via internal workplace politics. It didn't want to invite someone who was known for such jousting into this place.
Still, there was also the fact that the war had been over for quite some time. Soundwave had changed significantly. Wouldn't it be unfair to assume Starscream had stayed the same?
If Soundwave could change- become better- why couldn't Starscream?
Soundwave set the documents aside with a bit of a sigh. It could at least interview him. It could give him a chance. It felt outright stupid to do so- milleniums of trained neural pathways were screaming this at it. Yet, it ignored them and opened their messaging software.
After inputing Starscream's contact information, it sent the following message.
"Starscream,
Thank you for sending your resumé and supplementary materials. Upon review, we have found that you are a qualified candidate for the analyst position and would like to schedule an interview. Please provide us with a list of three dates and times you would be available to meet.
Soundwave.

Constructed for Rapidity and Effectiveness
A powerful octa-core CPU powers the Dimensity 7300. This combo is ideal for gaming and multitasking with four 2.5 GHz Arm Cortex-A78 cores. Four Arm Cortex-A55 cores, which are energy-efficient, complement these and guarantee dependable performance for daily use. In comparison to the Dimensity 7050, this combination represents a major advancement.
The advanced 4nm manufacturing process is a feature of the 7300 series. This corresponds to a 25% decrease in power usage over the 6nm technique utilised in earlier generations. Users will benefit from longer battery life as a result, while manufacturers can create sleeker devices without compromising functionality.
Superpower in Graphics
Immersive mobile experiences require strong visuals. The Dimensity 7300 has an Arm Mali-G615 GPU to fix this. This graphics processor runs even the most demanding games smoothly, and MediaTekâs HyperEngine technology stabilises the network and efficiently manages resources. MediaTek says the 7300 series is appealing to mobile gamers due to its 20% higher frame rates (FPS) and energy economy.
AI Gains Strength
AI is increasingly changing the smartphone experience, enabling intelligent assistants, better photography, and facial recognition. The Dimensity 7300 uses the MediaTek APU 655, following this trend. This AI processing unit doubles the efficiency of the Dimensity 7050, resulting in a notable performance boost. New mixed precision data types, which enable more effective memory bandwidth utilisation and lower memory requirements for larger AI models, are also supported by the 7300 series. Future smartphones will be able to incorporate even more advanced AI features thanks to this.
Gorgeous Images
For a fascinating mobile experience, a stunning display is essential; a strong processor is only half the story. This demand is met by the Dimensity 7300 series, which supports powerful screens. With the ability to support WFHD+ resolutions at frame rates of up to 120 Hz, these chipsets guarantee fluid and visually spectacular images. For an even smoother user experience, the 7300 series also supports Full HD+ screens at an even higher refresh rate of 144Hz.
Concentrate on Take Pictures
Users now place a greater value on mobile photography, and the Dimensity 7300 series delivers. The chip has MediaTekâs Imagiq 950 image signal processor (ISP), which provides sophisticated photographic features. With the 12-bit HDR pipeline supported by this ISP, detailed information and brilliant colours may be captured. Furthermore, the Imagiq 950 enables features like video HDR, face detection, and precise noise reduction, guaranteeing beautiful images and movies in a range of lighting scenarios. The 7300 series stands out for its ability to enable dual simultaneous video capture, which allows for the development of more imaginative content.
A Set of Chips for Foldables
A 7300 variation called the Dimensity 7300X goes one step farther by being designed with foldable cellphones in mind. The US Patent and Trademark Office banned the use of generative artificial intelligence for any purpose last year, citing security concerns with the technology as well as the propensity of some tools to exhibit âbias, unpredictability, and malicious behavior,â according to an April 2023 internal guidance memo obtained by WIRED through a public records request. Jamie Holcombe, the chief information officer of the USPTO, wrote that the office is âcommitted to pursuing innovation within our agencyâ but are still âworking to bring these capabilities to the office in a responsible way.â
Paul Fucito, press secretary for the USPTO, clarified to WIRED that employees can use âstate-of-the-art generative AI modelsâ at workâbut only inside the agencyâs internal testing environment. âInnovators from across the USPTO are now using the AI Lab to better understand generative AI's capabilities and limitations and to prototype AI-powered solutions to critical business needs,â Fucito wrote in an email.
Outside of the testing environment, USPTO staff are barred from relying on AI programs like OpenAIâs ChatGPT or Anthropicâs Claude for work tasks. The guidance memo from last year also prohibits the use of any outputs from the tools, including images and videos generated by AI. But Patent Office employees can use some approved AI programs, such as those within the agencyâs own public database for looking up registered patents and patent applications. Earlier this year, the USPTO approved a $75 million contract with Accenture Federal Services to update its patent database with enhanced AI-powered search features.
The US Patent and Trademark Office, an agency within the Department of Commerce, is in charge of protecting inventors, awarding patents, and registering trademarks. It also âadvises the president of the United States, the secretary of commerce, and US government agencies on intellectual property (IP) policy, protection, and enforcement,â according to the USPTOâs website.
At a Google-sponsored event in 2023, Holcombe, the author of the guidance memo, said government bureaucracy makes it difficult for the public sector to use new technologies. âEverything we do in the government is pretty stupid, when you compare it to the commercial world, right?â he said. Holcombe specifically cited cumbersome budgeting, procurement, and compliance processes, arguing that they hamper the government's ability to rapidly adopt innovations like artificial intelligence.
The USPTO is not the only government agency to ban staff from using generative AI, at least for some purposes. Earlier this year, the National Archives and Records Administration prohibited the use of ChatGPT on government-issued laptops, according to 404 Media. But soon afterward, the National Archives hosted an internal presentation that encouraged employees to âthink of [Googleâs] Gemini as a co-worker.â During the meeting, some archivists reportedly expressed concerns about the accuracy of generative AI. Next month, the National Archives is planning to release a new public chatbot for accessing archival records developed with technology from Google.
Other US government agencies are usingâor avoidingâgenerative AI in different ways. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, for example, specifically banned the use of AI chatbots for sensitive data. NASA did decide, however, to experiment with the technology for writing code and summarizing research. The agency also announced last week that itâs working with Microsoft on an AI chatbot that can aggregate satellite data to make it easily searchable. That tool is available only to NASA scientists and researchers, but the goal is to âdemocratize access to spaceborne data.â
