AI versus a giraffe with no spots
On July 31, 2023, a giraffe with no spots was born at Brights Zoo in Tennessee.
Image recognition algorithms are trained on a variety of images from around the internet, and/or on a few standard image datasets. But there likely haven't been any spotless giraffes in their training data, since the last one to be born was probably in 1972 in Tokyo. How do they do when faced with photos of the spotless giraffe?
Here's Multi-Modal In-Context Learning:
Tumblr media
And InstructBLIP, which was more eloquent but also added lots of spurious detail.

Are these crummy image recognition models? Not unusually so. As far as I can tell with a brief poke around, MMICL and InstructBLIP are modern models (as of Aug 2023), fairly high up on the leaderboards of models answering questions about images. Their demonstration pages (and InstructBLIP's paper) are full of examples of the models providing complete and sensible-looking answers about images.
Then why are they so bad at Giraffe With No Spots?
I can think of three main factors here:
AI does best on images it's seen before. We know AI is good at memorizing stuff; it might even be that some of the images in the examples and benchmarks are in the training datasets these algorithms used. Giraffe With No Spots may be especially difficult not only because the giraffe is unusual, but because it's new to the internet.
AI tends to sand away the unusual. It's trained to answer with the most likely answer to your question, which is not necessarily the most correct answer.
The papers and demonstration sites are showcasing their best work. Whereas I am zeroing in on their worst work, because it's entertaining and because it's a cautionary tale about putting too much faith in AI image recognition.

Hello, Kris! I think I might’ve already gotten the gist of it, but it’s been some time. What exactly IS Academia Mode? Are you still in school, or is this your actual job, and it just happens to be involved in the education system?
Many thanks!
hahah no worries!!! that is a good question 🤣😭😭🙏 for me, academia mode is currently finishing the 5th and final year of my doctoral program and includes (but is not limited to lol):
data collection, analysis, write-ups
writing python programs to support my data cleaning, data coding, stats, and data analysis/visualizations
applying for GRANT MONEYYYY
submitting abstract proposals to conferences (and applying for MORE GRANT MONEYYYY)
reporting research findings (writing journal article manuscripts, preparing conference slides)
writing my actual dissertation manuscript lol
supporting and instructing my research assistants
sharing my research with mainstream public audiences
writing my non-fiction book based on my ongoing dissertation research
teaching classes, grading papers, holding office hours, fielding emails, writing letters of recommendation for all sorts of students' fellowships/grad admissions/grant applications, teaching students how to strategize their personal statements, grant purpose letters, and other aspects of apps, etc.
peer-reviewing others' journal manuscripts, providing feedback to colleagues (blind review or not)
assisting with my advisor's research and textbook manuscripts (proofreading, copy-editing, internet sleuthing, finding more up-to-date citations, occasionally writing rough drafts)
writing chapters for edited volumes on various topics
READING. all the time. reading new literature and research articles constantly. ALL THE TIME. writing 1-pagers and mini-annotated bibs for future lit review use, etc.
WRITING. all the time. professional-speak, academic-speak, insructor-speak.
getting paid to travel to conferences to present my research (GRANT MONEYYYYYY)
by may 2025, i'll be a Ph.D.!!!!!! [screams]
academia mode! ✨🤣🤣🤣😭🤣💕 every day, i think about how lucky i am that i get paid to do what i do 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹 hope you are having a magnificent day, and thank you for the ask!!

According to Sada Social, there is an urgent need for an immediate investigation into Meta's leak of WhatsApp users' data to the Israeli military.
The group diligently observes the collective dissent voiced by numerous Meta employees, encompassing Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads, regarding the Meta company's complicity in the genocidal war against the Gaza Strip, its endorsement of the Israeli occupation, and its fueling of the "Lavender" artificial intelligence system used by the Israeli military to kill Palestinian individuals within the Gaza enclave.

copin with yearningTM by drawing and writing the Weirdest Fuckin AroAce Relationships... just the most incomprehensible unconventional intimacy... and what fits the bill better than lisa/*ziz?
Tumblr media
*not platonic not romantic not sexual not queerplatonic but a secret fifth thing. thematic.
yeah I nerfed the simurgh's size but that was the price to pay to redraw the statue it is based on.
an important thing abt my lisa/*ziz art is that lisa is always gonna be higher... the simurgh is reaching for her. the simurgh is a shard construct; her purpose is to collect data, and she collects it from people, like lisa. she needs lisa (metaphorically) to be fulfilled, in a way that lisa doesn't need her. the simurgh sought lisa out, chose her; lisa spent most of that time just thinking "ohgod oh god when can I get away from scary bird lady". no voluntary seeking out on her part! also, the simurgh is younger than lisa, and she's a shard construct. she doesn't yet have a fully realised, independent sense of self [might be headcanon, but that's how I see it]. she is learning humanity from lisa. she is the dependent one in this relationship
based on a statue by: Giovanni Scanzi (1840-1915) [finished by Luigi Brizzolara (1868-1937) upon Scanzi's death]Twice25 & Rinina25 uploaded: 2006-12-1, CC BY-SA 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/, via Wikimedia Commons

Increased Infection Risks After COVID-19 Infections - WHN
March 2024
While deaths during the acute phase have been decreasing, in part due to improved disease treatment and vaccination, excess mortality continues to be high [2] (See Figures 1 and 2) and evidence shows that repeated infections deteriorate health and increase many health risks [3,4], including long COVID, autoimmune disease [5], stillbirths [6], other infections, including RSV [7], and many more [8].
Some of these adverse effects have been related to a deterioration of the immune system after a SARS-CoV-2 infection [9,10]. The probability of Long COVID and adverse health impacts increases with repeated infections.[11] Two articles mentioned below (among many more) show that significantly higher risk from other infections occurs for those who have suffered from COVID, consistent with many studies showing that the immune system deteriorates due to the infection.[12]
...
This spiral of infections and their consequences is not sustainable. The health of the population will keep on deteriorating. We have measures to reduce the impact of COVID-19 [5], why not use them?

Training large language models on the outputs of previous large language models leads to degraded results. As all the nuance and rough edges get smoothed away, the result is less diversity, more bias, and …jackrabbits?

A map of every single band on the Metal Archives as of March 1st of this year, using the same dataset I used for this site. Each individual dot represents a single band, and each line indicates that two bands have a member in common.
Tumblr media
A closeup, showing the lines in a bit more detail.
There are around 177k bands on the Metal Archives, and, of them, about two-thirds can be connected to one another by common members.
