Volunteering - Last week was tiring, but fun! The event that I was volunteering at focused on people with intellectual disabilities, and I was part of the health screening section (though I was merely recording data, not conducting the screening). This event had people from all over Canada too. Because of that I had to brush up my french skills, which I haven't used in nearly 8+ years, so that was a struggle. What was less of a struggle was communicating with ASL!! I had one person who was deaf and when I realized it I was able to sign to him! Mind you, when he signed back I didn't 100% understand him because I was too focused on what I was signing, and I definitely made a few mistakes, but I'm still really happy!

5in5weeks - Ok, @izicodes made a challenge 2 years ago to spend 5 weeks learning 5 programming languages, and I thought that was a super good idea and that it would help with my burnout. (link to the project can be found here). Now, I'm gonna be taking weekends off (and I'm out of town for the next few days later this week), so I won't be doing this daily, but I'm gonna try my best not to take random days off. That being said, I'm starting this off with PHP! I covered some basics today by watching a youtube playlist, and I probably won't get through all 100+ videos in a week, but my aim with this challenge is to get the basics done and create something simple. After this challenge, I'll delve deeper into the languages that I like.

💌 Day 1: What are you most looking forward in learning PHP?

I had to use PHP for a class about 2 years ago and I asked my friend to help me (because I had no idea what was going on and it wasn't taught in class), and he basically did the work. Now, I keep on seeing PHP as a requirement for job applications, so I decided to finally get started on learning it. I actually applied for a job half a year ago and they emailed me asking if I knew PHP, and having to say no made me feel like garbage. So...time to change that.

Art - I've been wanting to delve into 3D art for a while now. 3 years ago I looked up the classic donut tutorial for Blender, but that's it. Now I'm gonna do the same thing, but this time progress past the tutorial and actually make things on the regular with it. Hopefully I will be as obsessed with it as I was when I was first learning how to draw, and just pump out as much as I can (quality doesn't matter at the starting point). There's just so much to the interface for Blender that you need to learn...it's overwhelming and intimidating.

Tutorial: Pressure-Drop Testing

Motor cooling is one of the three projects I lead as Head of Mechanical Powertrain. My motor cooling lead is home for the summer so I will be conducting an experiment on his behalf to measure the decrease in water pressure caused by flow going through the motor and motor controller.

What is the motor cooling project?

Our car is fully electric which means we have a motor and motor controller powered by batteries that make the car drive. These components dissipate lots of heat, so we run a loop of water through them to transfer that heat away from them. The water loop is depicted below in the chart.

A pump drives the water from a reservoir through the radiator which cools the water down. Then, the cool water flows through the hot components (motor controller and motor) to transfer the heat out of them and into the water.

Pressure-Drop Testing

As the water crosses the motor and motor controller, the water pressure decreases which also decreases the flow rate and the cooling effect. As we design the cooling loop for our next car, we need to know exactly how much the pressure drops across each component to made decisions about the loop design.

After building each loop above, I will fill out the table below to record the inlet and exit pressure of the motor and motor controller.

The hope is that the motor has a much smaller pressure drop than stated on its data sheet, so it can be run in a loop with one pump. This results in a two-loop system for 24A, with two radiators, two pumps, two swirl pots, and one shared catch can in total.

If the motor pressure drop is high, two pumps are needed for the motor cooling loop. In this case, it would be best to one loop, as that would mean one less pump in the design, saving weight, cost, and power draw from LV.

long post, this is my own pov but its really worth reading up here's my pov, from the understanding of fair use. the copyright system in the USA is not perfect but it is a) what is currently legally enforceable b) its a decent starting point. There is also a a US copyright claim to a Midjourney created comic (the writing & panelling were human made but the specific per panel images were machine generated & edited/layouted by its human writer) thats written in pretty layman terms that might help.

Copyright is also! not just about what is/isnt stealing but it does deal a lot with whats legal and what you can profit from and that's pretty deeply tied into this issue. And the copyright office decision also cuts well into the non human factor of this

So here are the 4 general guidelines for copyright: 1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

2. the nature of the copyrighted work;

3.the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole;

4. and the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

the worst and most flagrant copyright issues are because you can, in fact, explicitly instruct the AI to copy specific artists. Yes it trains mindlessly on large datasets, but it also learns like, "expressionism" are these traits and art style like "Monet" are these other traits. And manyyy of these artists are contemporary and living artists, especially those who's work is popular on social media. For human artists, you learn techniques sure, but in practice, its almost always an amalgamation of different techniques and your own techniques AND human input to create unique images. Aka, when I copy a Kevin Wada painting tutorial, the way I draw and what I like wouldn't make it look like Wada's. In general and in practice with experienced artist's- yeah copying techniques rarely actually replicates the work. But in many cases- the training on general techniques to create unique art is just not true as these programs outright attempt to emulate original works. This is why a lot of articles against AI point out that you can fully reproduce Sony's Dualshock 3 controllers and near perfect frame recreations of Avenger's Endgame. Its not about technique, its that you are recreating end products. This would violate a lot of 3 (because now your end work is suddenly a lot like the original. In addition, they can often be rarely transformative. They do not add new ideas or perceptions to the thing they copy, theyre just... adding it) and 4 (if you copy comic artist John McJohn's exact art style, the way AI does, you are actively impacting the market and value for John McJohn to sell his art. If you are selling a product with all the main characteristics as John McJohn buyers, it's a good sign number 4 is a problem)

2. Okay well tumblr user jirnkirks, what about all the art that isnt identifiably from a specific IP or artist? I would say this is where some of the legal stuff is beyond me slash the US Copyright system isn't perfect and golden. But first of all, and most notably, an individual human copying an existing painting or following a tutorial is very different from a for profit corporation data scraping millions of images in bulk. Shitbag vibes aside, data scraping like this is a commercial use of the product. It's a bit like the difference between going to a govt protected/taxpayer funded river and taking a sip or a dip vs going to a river, setting up a pump and packaging machine to bottle up the water to sell. Many of these companies are taking images at a scale, collecting them, and using them at a profit with a new technology that artists did not consent to.

As an artist... in little ways, there are some similarities. But from a long pov? Its one thing to accept your art will get human copycats and people inspired by you. Its a whole other kettle of fish to see your art being used to power an industry commercializing artist's work as a whole without consent whilst actively working to remove the value and industry for your work in an already exploitative industry.

3. How do humans use techniques? All humans have their own individual thoughts and artistic viewpoints. To say artists steal or copy each other techniques is a bit of a flattening of what goes on- of course copying techniques occurs and copycat artists, but generally like...artists just inspire each other and a single artist is their own sauce + a mix of different things that makes something identifiably theres. Their inspiration is transformed by the human. This might change one day but.... AI aren't people. I can't stress this enough. they are not intelligent, they are not cognizant or conscious. They are essentially complicated formulas that learn to use billions of variables to approximate a balance the end user likes. There is nothing inherently human or transformative in their works because they are programs. They can't do any of that. This was, in fact, part of the Copyright Office's decision. Humans can choose the result they want but the actual process generating the image? It is the same level of intelligence behind shaking a dice and printing the result.

And I think its fair that artists come from a community of inspiration and generally, most understand that as they become more prolific artists, they give back to the same community of artists. Computer programs are not and have never been part of this community, and worse yet, its greatest proponents have been actively anti artist, both philosophically and financially.

Plans for nengi.js 2.0

Hi, this is Alex, the people’s network programmer and developer of nengi.js. Let’s talk about the future.

I consider nengi 1.x to be complete. Of course there are always unfinished items of work -- I wish I had a comprehensive tutorial series on prediction for example -- but really things have been stable and good for a long time.

So as I look towards 2.0, there are no fundamental changes to the library in mind. Instead the future is about improvement, making things easier, and staying open to deeper integrations with other libraries and possibly even with other languages.

One area of intended improvement is the whole process around forming connections both on the client and the server.

On the clientside, client.readNetwork() or equivalent is invoked every frame as the mechanism that pumps the network data into the application. However, this pump also controls the network data related to the connection -- meaning that without spinning the game loop one cannot finish trading the data back and forth that completes the handshake. I’d like to redo this such that we end up with a more normal api, e.g.  client.connect(address, successCb, failCb) or equivalent. This presents a clean flow with no ambiguity as to when a connection is open. It’ll also let the clientside of games be a bit tidier as they don’t need to spin the network in anticipation of a connection opening.

On the serverside the whole .on(‘connect’, () =>{}) warrants a redo. I have in mind a simpler api where a ‘connectionAttempt’ occurs, and then the user code gets to invoke instance.acceptConnection(client, greeting) or instance.denyConnection(client, reason) thus again providing a nice and clean exact line after which we know what state the connection is in (attempted => connected, or attempted => denied).

Another area is Typescript support and some positive side-effects thereof. Nengi has minimal typescript definitions, but I think the actual surface of each api class/function should be rewritten in actual typescript. This will be limited, as the actual inner workings of nengi are truly untyped -- it has its own crazy typesystem and fancy optimization of high speed iteration based on object shapes that I should stop talking about now before I accidentally write a dissertation.

Per adding Typescript support there will be a major benefit to Typescript and JavaScript developers alike which is the opportunity for some top tier intellisense. The nengi api is small and having some modest documentation pop up right as you type things like .addEntity would be awesome.

The other benefit (ish..) of formally supporting Typescript is that a few of the processes around how to integrate game logic and nengi could finally be strictly addressed. I used to favor a very laissez-faire approach to integration as I didn’t want to stifle anyone’s style… but as time has gone by it seems that the level at which nengi can be decoupled is not seen as powerful, and instead it just confuses people. I want a better newbie experience, and presenting things like “well you can kinda do anything” isn’t helpful. I wouldn’t necessarily limit nengi itself, and instead may supply this functionality as a layer, but I would like to suggest a much stricter boilerplate for topics such as associating game data with a connected client and any other spot where game and network get glued together.

On that note of making things less open ended, I am *considering* whether nengi should offer an Entity and Message etc as part of the api. Currently entity is a concept or an implied interface -- really it is any object. Too decoupled? Maybe something more explicit would be nice. We’ll see.

More advanced protocols/schemas are also needed in the future. There are a bunch of features that can easily come from having more options on the protocols, but initially I plan to skip over all of these features and just change the api in a hopefully future-proof manner. The plan here is to change things from protocol = { x: Int, y: Int, name: String } to something more like context.defineSchema({ x: Int, y: Int, name: String }). Initially these will do the same thing, but in the future more arguments will be added to defineSchema.

The eventual removal of types from nengiConfig is another dream feature that may or may not make 2.0 but is worth a bit of discussion. NengiConfig.js is that file where every entity, message, command etc is listed out. Removing this would require nengi to be able to explain *in binary* how to *read future binary* and is non-trivial. The benefit however is that the parallel building of client and server code would no longer be a strict requirement. In the end of course a client and server need to be built for one another, but if the relationship were less strict than it is now it may pave the way for eventual nengi clients that aren’t even JavaScript. To me this has always been a bad joke -- who would want such a thing??? But as the years have passed it has become clear that nengi is not just special for being JavaScript, but that it is actually competitive in performance and functionality with the type of technology coming out of AAA multiplayer gaming companies (send money!!). So this may not be a bad direction (though it is worth noting there are at least two other major changes needed on this path).

There would also need to be changes to the current ‘semver’-ish release cycle. As it stands currently nengi version numbers follow the rules of breaking changes on major release (1.0.0) non-breaking changes on minor release(0.1.0) and small patches on patch release (0.0.1). As the current version of nengi is 1.18.0 that means that I’ve managed to add all functionality since release without a single breaking change (send money?!). This is not easy. These new changes described above are deliberately breaking api changes. Given the work cycle that I’m on and the lack of funding, the most efficient way for me to work would be with breaking changes allowed and perhaps a changelog to help the users out. So 2.0.0+ may shift to this type of development, where the ‘2’ is just my arbitrary name for the functionality, and 2.1.0 is a potentially breaking change. Obviously no one has to join me over in the land of nengi 2 until it becomes more stable, but letting me do *whatever* will get everything done faster, which is more important than ever given my limited time.

In the category of “maybe 2.0 things” here are a bunch of other things I’d like to talk about too, but they’re too involved (and experimental) of topics to go into detail. Here’s a vague summary of things I’ve put R&D time into:

Experimentally rewrites of sections of nengi in Rust, C, C++ with integrations via n-API, wasm transpilation, and some in-memory efforts. Crossing the boundary between JavaScript and anything else has been problematic as a means of solving most obvious problems, but some less-than-obvious problems may yet warrant this approach. I would say that n-API is a dead end for most nengi functionality but has some merit for spreading sockets across threads. WASM, or specifically working on a continuous block of memory may have some promise but requires further R&D.

An advanced rewrite of the nengi culler based on spatial chunking (promising!).

A middle api between serving up interpolated snapshots and the nengi client hooks api. This would become a generic replacement for the entire nengi clientside api. Until further typescript support I’m going to leave this one alone as it is very likely that a naturally elegant solution will show itself in the near future.

Multithreaded nengi, specifically the spreading of open connections across threads and the computation of snapshots. True optimal CPU use is opening multiple instances, not giving more threads to an instance, but there are some uses nonetheless.

Multi-area servers that use spatial queries instead of instances or channels (for example creating multiple zones, but not making an instance or channel per zone, instead the client.view just goes to a different space with some spatial math).

He loves to teach students, and constantly expresses his gladness when he is able to do so, even though he is often relegated to being a board projector for others. He wants to pass on knowledge from himself to the next generation, and has a fondness for history in particular. Wants to teach so badly, he often gets himself in trouble. He has a good mind, and tries to follow the rules as best he can, but when it came to keeping himself out of social/legal trouble, he had heart where he should have had brains. He has trouble keeping his cool when assisting bad teachers who either butcher the material and/or are cruel to students. Honestly, is a bit oblivious to the corrupted state of society, and is unaware of the danger he is in by semi-unknowingly defying the norm.

Outstanding Non-Physical Traits of Character: An Incredible Memory and love of learning. Definitely more so than your average person, or even your average teacher. Very kind, and prioritizes his students' welfare above all else.

Goals: Wants to become a teacher. Wants to teach a history class. Wants to improve his students’ quality of life by improving society as a whole. Also pushed for peaceful, legal educational reform on Cybertron. He wanted to make teacher credentials available to anyone who could pass certain tests instead of building people to be teachers and throwing them into a teaching/tutoring career whether they liked it or not. Accomplishments: He once taught a long-running Intro To Pre-History course before being outed. Had the highest success and proficiency scores of any other teacher in the school. He is very proud of the quality of his historical evidence and analysis. He can and will name several “students of his” who became very successful researcher/educators of their own; Daybreak, Vertical Shift, Imperial, Nautical… he set up a few “Grid Classes,” but they were taken down by the government after “potential terrorist sympathizers” began to access them.

Failures: He was “barred” from his unlicensed teaching after the government put pressure on the academy to be ��up to code.” He was devastated. He never got the majority of his reforms pushed through, and not many people cared about his cause; either they were uninterested in change, or his concerns were to “niche.” He's terrified of letting his students down.

Backstory: He has worked at Pious Academy since it was open. He was literally sparked for his job. Serving as a projector for other teachers to display things on by day and scouring the library by night, he listened in on so many lectures, and knew the school so well, he became the formats expert on all things going on. He was inspired by one kind professor who only taught one year at the school before leaving to follow his heart and pass on his vast array of knowledge on to the next generation. His light and charming personality endeared him to the management staff, and allowed him to do additional work, despite his Disposable Class. There was one point where he was teaching classes on his own thanks to his vast array of data and his sheer seniority, until some spoiled prick of a student found out his Frame Type and tattled (*Cough* Sentinel). The Academy is now very careful to keep Exampletron on a leash, for fear of governmental retribution.

Character’s Opinion: Exampletron believes that he needs to do what it takes to get his right to teach back by changing the education system such that knowledge and learning have the most priority in a school setting, putting aside all Classism for it’s sake. He pushed for reforms, and patiently waits for his letters, inquiries, pamphlets, and essays to be reviewed and discussed upon (they never are, but he keeps trying). He’s not a “revolutionary” per say, he thinks everything he’s trying to get done is obvious to everyone, it’s just no one’s bothered to address it yet, is all.

Philosophy: The students, their education, and their quality of life is the most important thing. Hands down. Exampletron thinks that knowledge, history, literature, and culture is all beautiful, and that everyone should have the chance to appreciate it. Teaching is the most rewarding experience there is, and watching your students become better is and should be the goal, always.

Friends With: Several of the staff, administrators, and students of Pious Academy. Doesn’t know anyone else, really.

Platonically Dislikes: One student who always purposely spills oil on his Projector Form, even after Oil consumables were banned from the classroom. What’s with that guy, anyway?

General Enemies With: The assistant dean, Whippersnap. They’re always cruel and mocking after one of Exampletron’s attempts to get change or teach a class on the sly goes awry.

Best Friend/Amica Endure: A teacher named Inquiry. They’re not Amica or anything, but they’re still really good friends. Inquiry always asks for Exampletron’s opinion during his geography class.

Romantic Interest: Again, it’s Inquiry. He’s just not sure how to bring it up…

Hate Crush: Uh,,, no one, really? He is Black Aromantic. He doesn’t enjoy hating people, really, but understands that others find this form of romance attractive and/or cathartic.

Arch Nemesis/Mortal Enemy: Trunchable from down the hall. She is THE WORST teacher OF ALL TIME. NO knowledge of subject matter, downright CRUEL to the students AND the other staff. She enjoys cruel and unusual punishment for even the smallest of slights. She once forced another teacher to eat an entire full-sized oil-cake in a teacher’s meeting for stealing her slice of cake from the work fridge, and the teacher got so sick they had to go to the hospital to get their tanks pumped. No one can tell her off or fire her because she’s the daughter of some high ranking official, and to make matters WORSE she teaches THE NEW FORGES. UGH!!!! He doesn’t like hating people, but she forces his platonic hand!

Peacemaker For: Many, many, many student pairs (and one teacher pair). If you are using Windows and if you installed the program on portable mode, find the installation folder of the program (ie C:\Games\Stepmania\) and copy the simfile pack into the Songs folder there (for example, the music file of a simfile is in a folder that looks like this: C:\Games\Stepmania\Songs\69-Xiddy's Simfiles\(1) tpazolite - Chaos Time\Chaos time.ogg).

I don’t mind if you stream my simfiles. I don’t know if these are safe for streaming; there is no explicit graphics or lyrics (at least in English, except maybe that horse song in the cursed folder, don’t stream that crap) however I don’t know if your stream will be hit by a copyright strike. I’ve seen a couple of small streamers play my simfiles live and nothing happened to them, but you never know.

Are these all the simfiles you have created over the years?

No, I have collaborated with some people over the years and I have a couple of stepcharts that are not available in this webpage. Some of them are featured in Nostalgia Pack (which is included already in the default simfiles you get in StepP1 and StepPrime), others are featured in the official StepF2 pack (which is exclusive to StepP1). I also have collaborated with Ecas95 ( https://ecas95.tumblr.com/ ).

I also collaborate frequently to the Serenity Project ( https://projectoutfox.com/outfox-serenity ) which is the official community simfile pack of Outfox (although this one is not exclusive to Outfox).
