"The U.S. Department of Education announced Monday that it would continue to operate its online library, known as ERIC, after allowing it to lapse last week. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had sought significant cuts to the document repository that is used by 14 million people a year, and allowed funding to run out on April 23. That ended the ability of the Education Department to add new research reports and documents to the library that is used by education policymakers, researchers and teachers.
"'We are dedicated to sharing knowledge about the condition of education and ‘what works’ to improve student achievement,' said Matthew Soldner, the acting director of the Institute of Education Sciences, in announcing the continuation of the ERIC. A new, albeit much smaller contract was signed on April 24, according to the Federal Procurement Data System. [emphasis added]
"Soldner said that 'no content has been removed or deleted from ERIC.' He added that the 'preservation policy is unchanged: we will not remove an article in ERIC unless it is retracted by the publisher.'"
A cut to the budget will either reduce the number of papers added to ERIC, or slow its intake. The article above also states that the ERIC helpdesk will now be gone. The ERICA, or ERIC Archive, has been created over at the Data Rescue Project to coordinated copies of materials stored on the Wayback Machine.

I'm sobbing Cucuruchito on QSMP is LITERALLY what irl AI are 😭 it doesn't truly know anything, it's got a database of information it strings together as it sees fit and clearly doesn't have a memory of past responses so it's not truly learning or remembering what it's been told or is answering and can give conflicting responses to repeated questions, and it LITERALLY regularly makes up misinformation. THIS IS WHY AIS ARE A PROBLEM IRL AND NOW ITS SO OBVIOUS IN QSMP AAAAA 💀💀💀💀

people defending w*ndipshit by arguing that he's native american so he can use it, are one google search away from seeing that it originated from Algonquin-speaking people (Ojibwe, Cree, etc.), and that he himself is Cherokee descent (not Algonquin-speaking people)

Real big fan of robots and monsters and aliens btw in case u couldn't tell.
And a trope I Hate is forced humanization, in general. If a non human character is supposed to become connected to humankind, then fine. It's not atrocious on it's own. I don't care.
What I do care about is when they're belittled for not being "human enough" in a "weird way". Like, yeah, maybe the alien that doesn't celebrate birthdays is strange to the protagonist. They don't have to call them out on it. The alien doesn't have to be seen at the end celebrating their birthday to solidify how human they've become.
If you want it to happen have it happen gradually. Have them become curious about it, and find out they actually like the customs they're not used to yet. Aliens finding pleasure in a playground, monsters enjoying food they'd never gotten to taste before, and robots discovering they genuinely like watching TV. Whatever!
Just work around their differences, make it be gradual, and not born from the main, human cast making fun of them or pointing out how weird they are for not liking X thing. And for the love of god, don't make "Becoming Human uwu" the center of their story. It's so... Heartbreaking. Bleak, even.

I know this is interesting to no one because it's incredibly niche but I have a little mystery around mid-to-late 19th century mens waistcoats that I've been digging into, and so far, after digging into a bunch of local, provincial, and also national and international online archives, including but not limited to the Rijksmuseum, the V&A, LACMA, and KCI, and also asking about this on instagram and specifically asking the dutch costume society, I have found:
-9 pictures, all local to my area in eastern Netherlands, and every single one of these pictures is people wearing local folk dress -and one (1) extant garment, in the US and also made there.
that's it.

I love writing how tos and lists. For decades I’ve posted various guides, breakdowns, and long lists about things all over the internet.
Now in 2024 as I write out another bullet pointed list I wonder if sometimes people think I write like Chat GPT.
Then I remember that Open AI data scraped Reddit and other platforms to make Chat GPT.
And I look at my Reddit Comment Karma score, and I wonder if Chat GPT talks like me.

not to brag about being good at my job but I’ve now developed two separate tools for debugging entirely on my own within my company entirely from scratch without help and A. it makes my job so much fucking easier and B. my boss is thinks im incredible just because im too lazy to want to write the same bits of code over and over just for debugging purposes
#unimportant thoughts#one i wrote 2-3 months ago#but i upgraded it this week to add in even more#and its just. perfect now.#given an id from any of the programs we built and run in our company#i instantaneously return everything about it#its name; what it does; what type of program it is; what server its run on; when it runs; where it connects; the parameters needed to#connect to wherever it connects; whether the program is currently turned on; the last 10 times the program ran; how many minutes each of#those runs took; how many files each of those runs created; whether those runs were successful; code snippets you can copy paste and run in#another window to look at the files created by each of those runs; the files created by the most recent run; thise file names; those file s#sizes; what types of files they are; whether theyre encrypted#how theyre encrypted#all of that and MORE#most of the information was already there but it took fucking 20 minutes to get all the information you needed#and you had to run a bunch of different snippets of code to get all the information and then put it all together#and now you can just fucking pop in the id of the program and .02 of a second later all the information is on your screen#AND IT MAKES MY LIFE SO MUCH EASIER#so. so. so. much. easier.#and then this week I wrote another program so I can compare runtimes of two different runs of the same program together based on how we stor#runtime data in our database#csuse i was tired of going back and forth manually between to different runs to compare#so now i have a program that just takes the ids of two different runs and compares them#doesnt even matter if the checkpoints are different I programmed it to figure out the order automatically and plug in any missing holes#finds the differences in runtime automatically and flags the biggest differences#and I can even customize how much of a difference I care about or to hide things I don’t care about

The old research squad all have special slightly illigal information acquiring skills: Tim with flirting and manipulating people (mostly police officers) into telling him stuff, Sasha with hacking and well Martin never worked in research (i do think Sasha did between artifact storage and the archieves) and is mentioned to not have the right credenciais and while that likely means the most formal things like writing proper reports, typos and random academic information it makes sense at least in season one that he doesn't have a research problematic skill but that still raises the question what was Jon special and slightly illigal research skill and my suggestion is: invading private property.
All of them do it, but Jon is the one that has the most sucess in doing it without being caught ( I mean "suplemental I invaded Gertrude's house" and I just rly don't remember he being caught once) also there is a non-zero chance that the reason the cops were the ones returning wandering baby Jon back to his grandma was because at eight and younger he was already invading places.

Disability Aid Databases
Hey!
So. Originally this was going to just be a quick little post where I shared four databases I've found that really help me when it comes to updating my resource. However! In doing that, I discovered more??
These are essentially sites that collect a big list of different disability aid suppliers, specialists and support services across different countries and continents and then list them all for easy access.
And now I'm listing them here so you can access them! 😁[grinning face emoji]
-
Assistive Technology Australia: Australian Database Personally, I quite like the little pictures they use for their categories. I think it's quite well organised, although it took a little while to get used to. This site is in English.
Canadian Disability Resource Society: Canadian Database I found this site just a little harder to use than some of the others, but after playing around a bit I got the hang of it. I like that you can search by specific keywords and postcodes. I think the contact details are also very clear, and there is an online chat function if you run into any issues. There are extensive language choices for this site.
Disability Info South Africa: South African Database Just going to put a quick warning for potential eye strain and/or flashing lights here as there's a moving graphic on the home page. However, I really like the fact you can change the font size and contrast of the page. I do think the site is a bit wordy but it's so good; there's a lot of information and advice on here once you know where to look. This site is in English.
EASTIN: European Database This might be a bit difficult to use at first, but the search function on this site is so specific it's honestly incredible. It acts as a big data hub for disability aid databases across Europe. Also, there are extensive language options for this site, including mostly European languages, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese and Thai!
Handicat: French Database Again, I like the little pictures for the categories. It gives a good visual representation of each area before you've even read the category title. There's also a little tool that lets you search by trade name, the type of product and the manufacturer. This page is in French.
Hjælpemiddelbasen: Danish Database Or, AssistData. This site lets you search for disability aids by purpose/classification and target group (i.e. disability). It also offers guides on choosing and maintaining different items. I like that the search function also has the option to include discontinued items. You can change the language of this site to either English or Dansk.
Living Made Easy: UK Database Or, the Disability Living Foundation. This was actually the first one I found. The organisation system isn't as specific as some of the others but I quite like that everything is still separated by category, and it's not too overwhelming. This site is in English.
REHADAT: German Database I really like the organisation of this site, but I'm going to put a warning for potential eye strain here as some of the blue graphics are a bit faded and hard to see despite the dark background. As well as assistive technology, this site also offers information on things like disability law, education, employment and financial advice, and addresses and contacts for additional support services. You can change the language of this site to either English or Deutsch.
SIVA: Italian Database I think this site is a little confusing, but I like the guided search and advanced search functions. You can really get down into the specifics of what you're looking for. You can change the language of this site to either English or Italian.

Unfortunately, there were a couple of extra databases that I couldn't access, but if I find any others then I will update this post.
Let me know if there's anything you want me to add/change!

Okay, so since my last post I have decided to make a few previously select or multi-select properties into separate database relations properties– I've also completed separated my fanfiction and old library databases and I am letting myself put fan art banners and more fun icons on some pages lol. One of these projects– you'll be able to see which because I haven't finished it– is going to be incredibly time consuming 😞. Again, this is starting as a speech to text voice note so it's going to get really conversational and probably have typos even though I'm going to edit it later. So sorry about that. I already typed it out once I can't.
Short spiel– I'm a library science grad student who is using notion to create a person fanfiction database. It's for fun but it's kinda interesting how my classes impacted what I do with it so I decided to make a post or two. I'll do a line brake now so you don't have to read more if you're not interested 🙂
Okay so the first section I consider a like Retrieval Information section– It answers questions like have I read this? Where can I find it? Who wrote it? Is there a podfic? Who recorded it? What stage in the writing process is it (One Shot, Multi Chapters, Work In Progress, Abandoned)? Was it written for a challenge/ is it in a collection (excluding personal favorite collections which there are so many of on ao3 I swear- pet peeve but I get it I was once one of those people, now I have a database that I've sunk too much time into lol)
Tumblr media
The sorting section is actually automatically filled out based on the Creator information, I explained my tbr sorting is based on favorite, prolific, or new to the fandom authors so it's easiest to trust pull that information from the Creator record in a roll-up property because then I can move everything in a group if I miss something at the end of the week when I'm adding things.
Tumblr media
Story info is pretty self-explanatory in my opinion, I pulled all of it from ao3 though I will fudge the information if I read a fic on Tumblr that isn't cross-posted. The pages it's not really useful per se. Just something that I think is interesting. It's also based on the PDF versions that you can download on ao3 and even then not really because I just averaged out the pages on one fic and have been dividing page numbers by that number for ages lol. Timeline I mentioned in my previous post. It's all based on 911 because I am currently hyperfixated on it to a degree that is genuinely… not great.
Authorized Tags… I'm still working on this. This is the time consuming project. I decided to make the multi-select property Tags– which has an insane amount of tags in it, which are all kind of jumbled because I was using different language for all of them like for instance “Evan Buckley is a Teacher” and “Bartender Buck” are both tags in that property but also it's just in that section so I can't even see everything that's in there and at this point there's over like 200+ tags that I can't really search very well and I can't really browse fics in the tags easily so it limits use in that way. Also, there's no real organization so everything that could be tagged wasn't there- also creators all use tags in very different ways so a lot of that was me tagging fic as I read them because this is a personal database, it's just what I want to do. But basically Authorized Tags is *loosely* based off of Authorized Heading from my cataloging course lol. Basically I've cleaned up the language and created more of a type and tier organization (“Evan Buckley is a Teacher” and “Bartender Buck” are now “Teacher! Buck” and “Bartender! Buck” respectfully and are specific character tags under the broad character tag of “Not a Firefighter! Evan Buckley”) so I'll be able to find things easier… when I finished retagging the like 3000 records that I've been tagging multi select up until now 😭. This is also giving me the chance to pull my OOC/Bashing tag into a little alien 👽 check box- like I said the tags are mine some creators tag way more extensively than me, others imo under tag– bashing isn't a DNF for me and I just ignore it when fix are tagged “Specific Character! Bashing” because sometimes people will tag that when it's just canon accurate behavior in my opinion? And again actual bashing doesn't bother me *most of the time* but it is one of the things that I want to know about effect on first glance if I'm going to reread.
Series was a single select property up until my last post actually… it was much easier to convert because unlike tags not every fic is in a series lol. But also I am going to go back and see if there were any fics that aren't in what I would consider a series but are how some creators use series like a place where they collect their one shots or a bunch of fic that they wrote with a single trope or even personal entries to fandom challenges, I also decided to use this database to track works that were inspired by other works if it's a very direct correlation– like if there's a sequel or one shot in the same world written by another Creator. The previous/next relations direct to other related works within the database, if Fic 1 is previous to Fic 2, Fic 2 is next to Fic 1. You'll be surprised how long it took me to add these fields or you'll think it's overkill– it's both. Part of the reason that I really needed these is because both the tags and the series properties were select properties. I could tag a fic as a sequel fic but that didn't directly connect me to its predecessor, I can see that'll work as part of a series but I would still have to leave the record to then go and look to see what else is in that series. It's kind of a non-issue. Obviously all of this is non-issues. This is way too in-depth for what it is. But it's going to be even more of a non-issue now that Series is a separate database but I'll probably still keep it for conveniences sake because if nothing else it is convenient.
Tumblr media
Housekeeping– when did I start and when did I finish the fic? Was it a favorite? Was there a quote that I took note of while reading it?
Meta-Metadata (I had that labeled as just metadata for an embarrassingly long time considering literally the entire record is metadata…) I used to have a record created property but it broke somehow. I don't know I want it back. I'm going to try at some point. I just haven't gotten around to it. It's not like a useful thing. It's just interesting to see how long after a record is created I back get around to reading it you know? But the two check boxes there are formulas attached to the read status. The first one includes up-to-date works as read And the second one only includes read read works as read– I like keeping up to date with a few authors so if they have work in progress work that I am keeping up to date with, I want it included in their tally on their record. So I have two separate roll-ups for read lol.
You'll see on the completed record that the only thing that I have written in the bottom part is reread dates. I don't know, I've never felt the need to take notes outside of the records? Or if I do, it's very rarely. I haven't really figured out a way to record reread dates in a way that doesn't seem clunky to me so I just put it there.
But yeah as you can see way too extensive lol a lot of these properties won't apply to every fic and are therefore hidden when empty (a few are always hidden in the collapsed view (Next/Previous notably) because if I'm looking for that information I'll look for it, you know?)
So here is a completed record of one of my favorite fics!
Tumblr media
As you can see, a few things have been collapsed the labeling is always hidden because I don't really need it it's just so it's not a wall of properties on the back end, but you can also easily find the information that's important in my opinion?
Anyway I'm tagging @percyjackson-winchester because they asked me too if you have questions or want me to make a follow up post about the Series of Creator Databases (of the Tags Database when I finish it lol) let me know 😅
