That quote from John Milton’s Paradise Lost gets quoted a lot, but did you know it’s Satan who says that? He goes on to say:

Here at least we shall be free; the Almighty hath not built

Here for his envy, will not drive us hence:

Here we may reign secure, and in my choice

To reign is worth ambition though in Hell:

Better to reign in Hell, then serve in Heaven.

Which just makes the Devil sound awesome, amirite?

He’s such a snappy dresser.

Based upon what I’ve written about deckers and the Matrix, you might come away with the impression that I don’t like deckers and the Matrix, which could not be further from the truth. The Decker is my favorite archetype and comprise my favorite characters – I even name-dropped one in this blog.

So why did I wait so long to cover it? Virtual Realities came out before Rigger Black Book, and I talked about that over two years ago.

Mostly – there’s not a lot to mock in VR. There are no new archetypes (like in the Street Samurai Catalog and Shadowbeat), no full-page layouts of new equipment (SSC, Shadowtech, RBB), no new adventures (Native American Nations Vol. 1 & 2).

Which, honestly, I miss a little. What is covered:

Computer Systems – making better dungeons

Intrusion Countermeasures – monster manual

Cyberdecks – new toys (hardware)

Programs – new toys (software)

Cybercombat – new ways of fighting

Matrix Realities – assorted odds and ends (sculped systems, reality filters, Shadowland)

Shouted out during the book introduction, there is a new type of computer Node.

Not sure if y’all are ready for it.
