im running everything (hit experimental simulation game by david oreilly, 2017) in Safe Mode on my PC to see if it trips my weird restarting issue, and 1) its weird that im in safe mode but i can still run everything, 2) im currently a stack of children's colored rings, which I don't remember being last time i ran everything but apparently i was, 3) apparently safe mode uses my CPU's integrated graphics instead of my graphics card so my frame rate is really bad, and apparently when that happens everything triggers 'disasters' constantly to mitigate issues (like, earthquakes and fogs and 'uninvited lasers' and 'world destroyed by suffocating love' and 'you'll be Right Back!'), and 4) the whole time ive been typing this my computer hasn't done a random restart once which is longer than my computer lasts when i try to play bg3 out of safe mode

My contribution to the recent Tumblr art prompt of TF2 artists being asked to make art of Soldier eating a burger. Thank you to @your-mothers-fantasy for the prompt.
For some reason, the burger glowed in an odd way after rendering it, so instead of getting rid of it, I leaned into it with a gold gradient. Like the burger is so good, it has powers. Let Soldier have a transcendent burger. As a treat.

Art Plays Games at FACT
This exhibition is in FACT on 88 Wood Street, Liverpool L1 4DQ. I decided to take some friends to this exhibition who don’t usually take themselves into the art scene, especially the contemporary art scene. FACT is well known to host some of the most peculiar exhibitions in the Liverpool art scene with its digital means of media. This includes film showings and gaming. As stated in the title, Art Plays Games displays games made by artists and independent developers and is based around the idea of interactivity in a gallery space. This is exhibited from September 5th 2024 to April 27th 2025 and I have visited it before in October, but the games rotate within the exhibition every so often. This I feel is done for good reason as it allows for other artists to showcase their work and allows for an audience to experience different artists who work in the same media as this kind of production in art isn’t seen very often at a wide scale.

When first coming into the exhibition space it’s obvious to see and feel the atmosphere in the room. It’s dimly lit and feels quite futuristic. This is fitting as the subject matter of the exhibition is forward thinking in comparison to a lot of other gallery spaces with its digital use of media. On the right as you walk into the room there is a sitting area with clouds above it. I’m not sure of the significance of this as there was no information displayed near it to explain its reason of being there, but this was here the previous time I came to visit FACT. On top of the seat there is an iPad, and a Nintendo Switch plugged in to use. I feel that this area is just for the use of relaxation as the games on the devices were rather easy to navigate, such as the unboxing game on the iPad.

Next to this there was another seating area with a TV in front of it and a table with some kind of controls on it. This showcased the game Mountain by David Oreilly and is a single player video game from 2014. By the description of the game was an information box on how to play the game and stated that the mountain’s lifespan is approximately 50 hours. When playing this nature simulation game my friend found that he was unable to play the game and couldn’t do anything more than move around the mountain for alternative viewing. The mountain itself did look like it had been tinkered with already so perhaps this could have been due to it already being played within the 50 hours’ time span. All the mountain is supposed to do is exist after you give the prompts to create it, so this is possibly why it wasn’t very interactive at the time we came to the exhibition. Otherwise, I do like the concept of it being quite meditative in seeing the cycles the mountain must experience.

Moving along the room, there was then Nocturnal Fugue and EchoVision both from 2024 by Jiabao Li, Matt McCorkle and Botao Wu. Both the video and AR experience were meant to showcase how non-human species experience life and the world around us. This piece mainly looks at the communication of bats. Nocturnal Fugue covered the space of one wall in the room and was paired with soundscapes and recreations of bats’ natural habitats projected into the gallery space to simulate a bat’s world. This was just interesting to watch and immerse in as the colours were so easy to get drawn into. EchoVision was a headset in the shape of a bat’s head and simulates echolocation. It would react to sound by lighting up the vision of the user. When I was wearing it, and my friends would talk to me it would light up everything I saw. This was fun to interact with and put into perspective some things you don’t think of as a human in the way that animal’s intake their senses in comparison to us.

We then tired I Can’t Follow You Anymore from 2024 by Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley. The style is in an early 2000s glitchy aesthetic you’d see in the likes of PS1 or PS2 graphics. It contains vampire mythology and interrogation of authority. This game gives the impression of a dystopian world in where you as the player must lead a revolution and gain followers to join you through each level. The creator of the game centre’s Black Trans identity to investigate our complicated relationship with the consequences of following those in power and ideologies blindly. This game was interesting and high stress, but it also made us think about how we should critically think about who we follow and what they are leading us into. I also feel it is very fitting into the time we are living in now within politics, not just in the UK but in the US as well and how frightening it is to think about what our World Leaders are leading us into and what comes for the future.

The last game in the room was 1001 Nights from 2024 by Ada Eden. The game is based on Persian folklore, specifically the tale of One Thousand and One Nights in where a ruthless king would marry a new bride every night and then would execute her in the morning. This was until Scheherazade marries him and tells him a story that delays him from killing her. The game encourages the player to tell an interesting story to the king to prompt him to mention weapons which the player can then use to fight the king. This was wonderful to play, and I enjoyed this game a lot as it allows the player to be creative in their choices in where their greatest weapon is their own speech. There are also headphones attached to the console that play atmospheric music and helped me to really immerse into the gameplay. The game also allows the player to take any receipts of the interaction you have with the king. Unfortunately, this feature did not work for me. Otherwise, I enjoyed this game.

Overall, Art Plays Games was a great exhibit done by FACT with different kinds of subjects talked about within it and is a gallery space that reaches out to audiences who don’t really interact with art very often or at all. My friends that I brought with me enjoyed it more than they thought they would and would recommend it to others to have a look just as I did to them.

Academic Blog 8: Emotions - The External World
This blog post talks about David O'Reilly's animated short film "The External World". It has an absurd visual style, which challenges the audience's emotional perception. The film is a non-linear narrative work in the traditional sense. Instead, it places the audience in a high tension of senses and emotions through a series of discontinuous, bizarre but deeply symbolic scenes. This approach can be explored from multiple angles in conjunction with emotional theories.
youtube
Gregg and Seigworth (2009) mentioned that affect transcends the realm of representation and enters the realm of feeling. They point out that emotion is an intensity that flows between bodies, often without relying on language or narrative to convey it. OReilly's "The External World" abandons traditional narrative logic and instead focuses on sensory stimulation and non-semantic emotional experiences. For example, a child is trapped in a ridiculous fictional scene because he has not learned to play the piano, and finally kills his father who had been hitting him on the head because he was not good at playing the piano. The audience's attention is not focused on the meaning of the plot, but on the meaning of the plot. It’s to the emotional intensity and absurdity of the scene. This non-representational approach is similar to Sluijs and Smelik's (2009) point of view in their analysis of "Elephants Dream", which emphasizes that emotional experience comes from "discontinuous episodes" rather than linear stories. These sequences place the viewer's senses in a state of constant challenge, resulting in a direct flow of emotion.
Tumblr media
Figure 1. the boy kills his father who had been hitting him
Gregg and Seigworth (2009) mentioned that emotion is a kind of intensity that can flow between bodies and does not rely on the transmission of semantics. The visual style and sound design in "The External World" take full advantage of this: chaotic scene changes, over-exaggerated character expressions, and sudden voice changes, taking the audience through a series of highly tense emotional fluctuations. For example, a scene in which a character is suddenly swallowed up by fire and disappears instantly brings fear and uneasiness to the audience. This emotion directly affects the audience's body, rather than understanding its meaning through rational thinking. This is consistent with Ahmed's (2004) description of emotions, who suggests that the power of emotions lies in their ability to cling to the body and instantly influence our sensory experience.
Tumblr media
Figure 2. the girl takes photos of a sunbathing bug with a flash
OReilly's short film also demonstrates the "continuity and change" of emotions, which Gregg and Seigworth (2009) particularly emphasize: "Emotion is a continuous process of change, existing in relationships and interactions." The film's scenes change rapidly, keeping the audience's emotions in an unstable state of flow. For example, in one clip, the audience may be amused by a character's antics (the girl desperately takes photos with a flash of a sunbathing bug), but the next moment be disturbed by the character's tragic ending (the bug is killed by the girl because its intolerance to light). This fluidity and relationality of emotion embodies what is described in the archive as the “becoming of emotion”: emotions are not static, but constantly changing and generated through the interaction between the scene and the audience.
Strange plot settings can leave a deep impression on the audience. Sudden explosions, exaggerated music, weird plots, and gloomy tones can all make the audience feel stronger. I think this kind of design can help my future creations to use different elements to make the audience to feel the intense strong uneasiness.

FREESTYLE AND STYLE GRAPHIC
For my three different kinds of images and gifs, I created two main styles, Freestyle and style graphic, mostly because I love to create 2-D digital drawings and would like to continue creating more 2-D animation so I can bring my own drawings to life. My pick of style mostly came from two inspirational artists, Levi Magony and Kevin Ramirez. Their animations are cartoons like yet full of details and life with rich colors, textures and narrative. Compared to their work I am hoping to broaden my skills beyond just 2D drawing skills importing them into a live storytelling art piece. Furthermore, their artistic touch is styled in a way that flows within the story.
DAVID OREILLY
Based on the reading, David Oreilly conveys as to how important it’s to pay attention to details. As artists we should pay attention to these details because it can feel as if something is out of place or unprofessional. He also explains what he did that helped him win the Golden Bear award for the best short animation creating a believable, engaging animated world built from their coherence making them more than just a character from a story but one with personality, characteristics and behavior detailed from dialogues, movements and quality. In his process of making this animated film he created a few rules to keep in mind. Such as understanding and creating an animation through coherence, using simple geometry to create a believable world.
