David Schutter Interviewed by Melissa Joseph
“I went to painting as the source, as opposed to nature, partly because I was so connected to painting at the time—its continuity, its history, seeing as painting.” David Schutter describes his process of painting from existing works with BOMB Magazine's Melissa Joseph.

Central Asia: genetics and archaeology, Pinhasi R., Heyer E. (probably not super useful to me, but you never know)
Central Asia and the Silk Road: Economic Rise and Decline over Several Millennia, Stephan Barisitz (not sure I agree that economic decline was the reason for Russia taking over, but the 19th century segment might be useful to me.)
Central Asia in World History, S. A. M. Adshead (150-174, 177-201, 127-149??. Not sure how useful this is to me, but sure.)
From Shamanism to Sufism: Women, Islam and Culture in Central Asia, Razia Sultanova (no contents available on preview, I'll poke through and see what's relevant and useful)
Muslim Women of the Fergana Valley: A 19th-Century Ethnography from Central Asia, Vladimir Nalivkin and Maria Nalivkina (This is going to be extremely, EXTREMELY useful - first hand (translated) account by two women about their lives in 1878 Fergana Valley! Obviously, not every group will be like this, but it'll be useful to have some actual first hand accounts!)
The turks of Central Asia in the history and at the present day, Czaplicka, Marie Antoinette (shoutout to the funniest author name on the list) (This is from 1918, no idea how useful this will be!)
Nationalism and Human Rights: In Theory and Practice in the Middle East, Central Europe, and the Asia-Pacific, Grace Cheng (Intensely curious about this, but probably not directly useful)
Beyond the Pass: Economy, Ethnicity, and Empire in Qing Central Asia, 1759-1864, James Millward (probably a little too politically oriented in an area too far east of my interest, but we'll see)
Christian-Muslim Relations: A Bibliographical History, Volume 7: Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and South America 1500-1600, David Thomas, John A. Chesworth (not necessarily useful, tbh, but interesting - I'll try to find volumes 8 and 9)
Central Asia: One Hundred Thirty Years of Russian Dominance, A Historical Overview, Edward A. Allworth (Interesting, but only the early parts will be relevant)
On Diversity and Complexity of Languages Spoken in Europe and North and Central Asia, Pirkko Suihkonen, Lindsay J. Whaley (might be useful for extra flavor)
Inside central Asia : a political and cultural history of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, and Iran, Dilip Hiro (just more history. There's going to be a point where I read the history and go, okay, I fucking get it.)
Conflict, Cleavage, and Change in Central Asia and the Caucasus, Karen Dawisha, Bruce Parrott (you know, for having a soft c, people sure do love to pair "central asia" wiht a bunch of c words.)
Explorations in the social history of modern Central Asia (19th-early 20th century), Paolo Sartori. (probably should read this all.)
Water in Central Asia : past, present and future, Viktor Abramovich Dukhovny; Joop L G de Schutter (*acequia class flashbacks* I should reread the acequia readings, too...)
The End of Nomadism?: Society, State, and the Environment in Inner Asia, Caroline Humphrey, David Andrews Sneath (not sure how much will be useful, but interesting)
Civil Society in Central Asia, M. Holt Ruffin, Daniel Waugh, S. Frederick Starr (Frederick, where won't i see you?) (not sure how useful this is, but I'll poke at it.)
Medicinal Plants of Central Asia: Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, Djamin A. Akimaliev, David E. Zaurov (auth.), Sasha W. Eisenman, David E. Zaurov, Lena Struwe (9-12. probably not very useful; flavor)
A Tajik Persian Reference Grammar, John R. Perry (this is more useful for my student than anything else.)
Afghan Frontier: Feuding and Fighting in Central Asia, Victoria Schofield (Firsthand accounts, not sure how useful but worth it)
Xinjiang: China's Muslim Borderland, S. Frederick Starr. (Not sure if there's much useful here.)
The Russians in Central Asia : their occupation of the Kirghiz steppe and the line of the Syr-Daria : their political relations with Khiva, Bokhara, and Kokan : also descriptions of Chinese Turkestan and Dzungaria, Valikhanov, Ch. Ch.; Michell, John,Michell, Robert; Venyukov M.I. (second hand source babyyyy)
Music and the Play of Power in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia, Laundan Nooshin (not sure how useful, but worth investigating, even just to give musical flavor)
Central Asia and Caucasus, Journal of Social and Political Studies (might be the wrong era, we'll see)
Ferghana Valley: The Heart of Central Asia, Frederick S. Starr, Frederick S. Starr, Baktybek Beshimov, Inomjon I. Bobokulov, Pulat Shozimov (i want intro, chapter 1, 2, 3)
Islam after Communism: Religion and Politics in Central Asia, Adeeb Khalid (This author again! The book I read was wonderful. I don't know how useful this will be, but it talks about insights from the study of Islam and Soviet history, so I'll check it out)
Central Asia Reader: The Rediscovery of History, H.B. Paksoy (only parts 1 and 2 are of interest, and I'm not convinced they will be useful)
