Már a megjelenése óta a polcomon volt a kötet. Az elmúlt évek eszeveszett vásárlásai alatt annyi maradt meg bennem, hogy bemutatja, miért is jött létre az USA-ban az FBI. Fogalmam sem volt, hogy mennyire gyomorforgató események állnak a hátterében, és már arra sem emlékeztem, hogy köze volt az amerikai őslakosokhoz, nevezetesen az oszázs indiánokhoz. (Tudom, nem teljesen korrekt kifejezés, de a kötetben is így fogalmaznak.). Végül ez utóbbi miatt keveredett most a kezembe, ezt választottam @bacchanteblues Ítéletdöngető olvasási maratonjára, ahol pont ez volt a téma. Még nem tisztáztam, hogy ez lényegében egy dokumentumregény, amelyhez a szerző óriási kutatómunkát végzett. Nem semmi, mennyi anyag összegyűlt még egy 100 éves bűncselekmény-sorozattal kapcsolatban is. Az első fejezetben lényegében elmeséli a történteket az érintettek részéről: az oszázs indiánok a földjük alatt található olajmezők miatt milliomosok lettek, ami az 1920-as években elég nagy szó volt. De ez nem volt ilyen egyszerű, sok esetben ugyanis vagyonkezelőket rendeltek ki melléjük, akik beosztották a pénzüket, sokszor meg is kopasztva őket. A legszebb azonban az, hogy különböző, látszólag egymástól független gyilkosságok történtek. Viszont néha az események egy-egy család köré rendeződtek, ami egyre inkább összeesküvés gyanúját vetette fel. Egy ilyen család történetét ismerhetjük meg. A kötet második része feltárja a korabeli nyomozás részleteit, a visszásságokkal és az akkor újonnan megalakult Iroda legendás alakjait is felvonultatja. A harmadik rész pedig a szerző jelenbéli következtetésein alapszik. Általában mellőzöm a tartalomleírást, de ebben az esetben, azt hiszem, kihagyhatatlan volt. Hajlamosak vagyunk ezeket az eseményeket szőnyeg alá söpörni, pedig nem kéne.  Maga a kötet egyébként logikusan felépített, informatív, ám mégis olvasmányos. I read a book, yo! I’m a big fan of non-fiction American history books, particularly if the subject is something that got overlooked in my years of schooling. This is a disturbing story of greed and serial murder that happened more recently than I care to think. Well-researched, but still a page turner.
