The free version of Davinci Resolve + Fusion and Fairlight (Video Effects and Audio), Blender (3D + 2D animation), and Gimp (graphical software) collectively replace most of Adobe's software and arguably out performs them. Blender has also substantially improved Greasepaint to the point you can use it as a dedicated 2D art application. The paid version of Resolve is also a single time purchase.

Sunken Cost Fallacy will not help you with Adobe. There are better options available and most of them don't cost anything. The cost of using Adobe software is egregious and their DRM is blatantly designed in bad faith. It's gotten so bad that the Film Industry has started abandoning its use in favour of the listed alternatives above.

"Emily I'm Sorry" (acoustic guitar cover song of Boy Genius) I love this song by Boy Genius so much I had to make a cover! When I reviewed the video footage, It was all wonked out and banded lo-res, but I thought "what the hell" and decided to play with that concept using DaVinci Fusion to learn about expressions to control parameters (some variations of (10*sin(100*sin(time/300))) + 10) were really making some interesting pseudorandom fluctuations using nested sine waves). Emboss makes a subtle cameo as well. The results were pretty psychedelic!

I'm in uni learning editing myself currently and was wondering what it is most youtubers would look for when hiring an editor, beyond just general portfolio stuff! I know you aren't looking for one, but if you were, what skills would be high in your list?

I personally like when somebody has a good understanding of audio levelling and conversation pacing. Bad audio can ruin an entire video or even YouTube short

A little bit of motion graphics knowledge can go a long way too. It's a step above the norm and doesn't have to be used constantly, but having it in the toolbag for emphasis on special moments can take things to another level (it's what I'm currently dedicating learning time to in Davinci, figuring out all of Fusion's power and quirks)

I think most of all though, I know lots of YouTubers want reliability on deadlines. It's a fast moving industry so tripping up and stumbling in to a trend late or not getting a draft to sponsors for integrations on time can be really detrimental

So after the time I coincidentally microwaved Tails on his birthday back in October, I decided to commit to the bit again

Y'know... since he has two birthdays (16th October and 21st November)

Also. Because on top of these two screenshots, I've had some of my friends ask me to make Tails explode for some reason

I tried a lot of new things in this project, mostly revolving around other methods for masking objects (Luma key my beloved and utterly despised), and a little bit of messing around with colors to get Tails to look a little bit more like he's behind the window rather than on top of it

I even made a crude texture to mimic the mesh over the microwave's window

Here's what the Fusion tab looks like in my Davinci Resolve project, it's... almost readable...

i had to fullscreen the window just so i could zoom in enough to see the text

There's still a ton of issues that I have with the video, mostly because I couldn't really get Tails to look like he's behind the door (without it looking even jankier)

Also throw in a good ol' dose of wack motion tracking (surprise surprise it's hard to track a reference object when it goes completely into shadow LOL)

But ehh for a first attempt I'm pretty happy with the result

I might try doing something like this in the future, when I have time

Some Tukk Tales BTS details! ✨

visually, this is a one-man project (aside from Robert Hranitzky's awesome titles/logo), got AMAZING people for everything sound related though

I made every 3d model from scratch, textures are mostly hand-painted, everything is keyframe-animated

mostly using Blender (with some addons & my own scripts), Substance Painter, Photoshop, Blackmagic Fusion/DaVinci & Embergen

with most of the shortfilm still being in rough previz phase, all teaser trailer shots were finalized early, within less than 4 weeks & will get some tweaks/improvements for the final release

for generating the laser FX I wrote a Blender addon & put it for free on Gumroad

lots of trickery in compositing for the smoke FX to keep render times low

the music was composed just for this teaser trailer specifically, by the extremely talented Luis Humanoide who did an exceptional job in very short time. Go check out his work!

saw some people assume the voices are AI. Nope! I wouldn't be comfortable with that. That's Tyler Weston as the clones & AVeryDandyLad & I as the battle droids
