Revisiting the mv: deep dive on the symbolic significance of the grapevines and fern flowers
Tumblr media
❗since I'm delving into sexual themes I'd appreciate if minor dni
My friend on Instagram mentioned she'd done a Wikipedia deep dive on fern flowers after she noticed them in the music video and it inspired my own spiral which I wanted to share.
I'm focusing mostly on yeonjun in the mv cause his scenes align the most explicitly with the theme of temptation (though I am also fascinated by Soobin's characterization of Narcissus that many people have pointed out)
Anyhow, we start the mv with yeonjun running freely with the others, though there's intentionally lingering shots on all of them wearing what appears to be a grapevines. For example, Soobin here pausing to catch his breath:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact that ALL of them are wearing these grapevines on their bodies seems highly intentional and therefore worthwhile to analyze. Grapevines are symbolically associated with fertility (this is a major point later djdksks stay w me)
Tumblr media
As the mv goes into the pre-chorus, we observe yeonjun noticing some flowers. It was my friend who pointed out that it's actually a fern flower, which you can see more clearly when the camera pans out to him slowly approaching it. He seems mesmerized, moving almost like in a daze, which aligns perfectly with the lyrics:
Tumblr media
Once he touches/plucks the flower, he gets a sort of hallucinatory flash of himself stroking something wet along his lips:
Tumblr media
I feel like it's pretty blatant what's being depicted here, but just to say it in words: this scene feels highly suggestive and metaphorical for our character leaning and falling into sexual desire and getting a vision of what the other side of that daydream world of temptation/sex looks like.
We then get into the first chorus which is when he throws his head back in what appears to be stunted pleasure (that, alongside the breathy exhale part of the song already speaks volumes, no words needed)
Tumblr media
We also cut to a shot of goosebumps rising up someone's arm with the repetitive "gimme gimme more" lyrics aligning with this moment of sexual awakening.
But okay back to the whole grapevines and ferns symbolism: there are several mythologies that centralize the fern flower as a symbol of fertility (which reinforces what we just observed with the grapevines), and picking/plucking a fern flower is "commonly read as a euphemism for sex":
Tumblr media
Adding on to that, the chorus choreography has a moment where they are lowering a grape towards their mouth (I forget which recent interview it was but taehyun mentioned directly that it's the 포도 move, and 포도 means grape):
Tumblr media
This aligns once again with the visual of the grapevines, and also thematically ties into the concept of temptation when we consider who grapes are symbolically associated with:
Tumblr media
I've reached my image limit rip but I hope this could be a fun and insightful read!
The sexual awakening theme is pretty obvious but it's still a joy to weave all these crumbs together and see how they align with the greater narrative at play.
Let me know your thoughts!

(mahiru t2 mv) girl you are DELUSIONAL girl you are LIVING IN A DAYDREAM!
to be honest this reminds me of muu in her trial 2 mv. they both have this idea of doing things because its "natural" (muu because she always gets what she wants, mahiru because she's in love) and don't realize that they're hurting the people around them.
muu killed her victim after the bullying, however. it all went downhill and that's when she snapped.
maybe mahiru did the same kind of thing. her way of loving was too intense, so her boyfriend might have backed off, which made her sad and hurt; but like the lyrics in "this is how to be in love with you" she thought that it was okay if they were hurting together, so she hurt him in turn, seeing it as an act of love.
(i don't think it's a real rat guys it just symbolizes mappi's desperation and distance from reality)

*slaps abnormality dancin' girl* this bad boy can fit so much kokichi ouma in it
("explanation" under the cut)
ah, attention seeking purple haired people who have this weird thing about being abnormal/not boring, doesn't care if others dislike their behavior, has performance and theatric metaphors, and went through a decline so significant it changed who they were at the end… at first i thought of ouma in chapter 4 onwards, where he really spiraled down, mainly because of these lyrics:
Now, from my chrysalis, I’ll become a butterfly.
There are no performers on this impassioned stage, so I'll beat out the steps, 1, 2, 3!
I'm not being manipulated, I'm dancing! Yeah, I'm going crazy!
[that entire bridge section, with the talking to the mirror at midnight]
1. butterfly symbolism (you know. gonta), 2. referencing how he caused miu & gonta's deaths, 3. how (in my hcs, at least) he was actually manipulated to do so, and 4. the whole "mental state breaking with his lie bleeding in with the truth, the persona of a cruel supreme leader who sends his subordinates to death intermingling with who kokichi ouma is." but then i thought of pre-game ouma—which also fits pretty well, i guess combining this idea with the previous one + the in-game events would flow better with the song/mv. more imaginary fanmade mvs and edits to daydream up, yaaaay—and then a part of a potential ouma backstory to add to my ever growing collection. the last one probably doesn't fit as well as the others but it's kokichi fucking ouma let me brainstorm this option a little

#1 - passion project
since 2020 ive been wanting to make my own rpg game. its been developing in my head for years and i see it so clearly but i want to finish the script so i can have a clear idea on how i want to tell this story which changes every time i feel like im ready to write it down. like the main themes are there, but theres no structure
having a brainstorm session or even just asking for critique for my story would be ideal but i always fear that im annoying someone for sharing my passion. im so used to ppl being like “oh that’s nice :).... anyways-” which i mean.... on one hand i understand not knowing what to say if you dont have an opinion on it (i get like that too) it but on the other hand it still makes me very sad. but lemme stop talking about my social anxiety, that is for the notes app teehee.
anyways i bought rpg maker mv on sale in 2020 and i taught myself how to use it thanks to youtube university but i fell off when i was spiraling with my trauma, identity, purpose in life. and everytime i try to get back into it i fall off bc the lack of motivation and i got busy with school.
its 2022 and i’m just not jumping back into this video game idea bc i know i got a good concept in my head. i just need to stop procrastinating because the things ive been daydreaming about this concept is so good...
why do i want to make a game? honestly at first i wasn’t sure because yes i loved videos games since i was a kid but i never wanted to be a game developer. but now i know the reasons; 1) i want to challenge myself to a major art project and 2) i want to share a story based on my childhood but in a goofy, quirky, deep meanings, symbolism, earthbound type of way because i love those types of rpgs so much.
i might post concepts and wips if i ever get to that point hmm we will see

Idea
A girl group whose overall concept is wearing different types of masks, never truly revealing their faces to symbolize how the industry (and world in general) relies too much on physical appearance as it relates to self-worth.
Alternatively, the only other group in their company, a boy group, has the complete opposite concept, playing into every fantasy that kpop itself likes to maintain.
Their storyline concepts mirror each other, Nightmares and Daydreams, reality and fantasy. A few years into their careers, the groups begin to collaborate and appear in each other's MVs and stuff, signaling the blurred line between reality and fantasy. They switch concepts during an award show performance, revealing the faces of the girl group for the first time.
Thoughts?
Edit: follow the hashtag #TruthRevealingMasks to keep up with the story!

Hi everyone I am back with...
OnlyOneOf theories and analyses (that nobody asked for)
part 1 is [here] , this is part 2 and we are going to talk about...
2. the inspiration for byredO + hints to the libidO mv
I find veery cool where they seem to have taken inspiration from for byredO, and I feel like this can not only be interesting but also useful to expand and better understand the meaning of the song... so imma share this ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
a. What is byredO?
(in case you want to listen to it while reading this :)
Byredo is a Swedish luxury brand founded in Stockholm, producing fragrances, leather goods and accessories.
The Byredo name comes from the old English word 'redolence', which roughly means sweet-smelling and aromatic.
b. Lyrics
The lyrics of byredO are built with references to perfume and if we look closely we can find specific references to the descriptions of some particular perfumes of the company...
byredO lyrics (official eng translation):
My limbs are numb, it's like they were broken up into pieces // I'm in an unfamiliar light drunkenness, but it's not bad
[...] The light that reaches me // Maybe ain't no sunshine
Parfume description (from the company website):
1. Sundazed (sunshine, nostalgia, escapism) - to be seduced by the sun in a state of summer bliss. To bask in the freedom of solar worship, a place where time stands still. A mythical undoing of body and mind in a mid-summer’s daydream. The state of total immersion - an addictive experience for sun-chasers everywhere. In a psychosomatic journey of free love, [...] Nostalgia and escapism entwine to channel the warmth of an endless summer.
More byredO lyrics:
Byredo, byredo, baby // The scent of you that is at the tip of my nose
[...] The infiltrated scent makes my head spin again // Memories in a small glass bottle // Drippin', one, two, three // Your emotions fill it up drop by drop // They look transparent
[...] The breath that reaches me // Maybe, ain't no purfume
[...] I want you to pick up my scent, baby // What do you think of this sample in a beaker, baby // I'm attracted to this familiar feeling // Spray it for me, spray it for me (Every night, oh) these h0rny boys I-
Parfumes descriptions:
2. Lil Fleur (fruity, light, summer) made with the ups and downs of teenage years in mind, the Lil Fleur eau de parfum from Byredo [...] Capturing youthful emotions, the fragrance opens with top notes of fruity aromas – we’re talking cassis and tangerine – [...].
3. Slow Dance (feminine, masculine, bitter, sweet) a rites-of-passage moment for both girls and boys before they metamorphose into women and men. A feeling of exhilaration tempered by awkwardness, a heady collision of innocence and experience, not knowing and knowing, felt across countries, cultures and time. Slow Dance mixes ideas of the feminine and masculine, bitter and sweet, in a rich, intoxicating distillation redolent of warm skin and breathless exchange.
c. Sound
All these feelings and vibes are also transmitted through the melody and the elements that make up the instrumental of the song (I'm so sorry I'm not good with technical musical terminology) like...
the whistles
the sound effect at 00:12 which seems like a signal of "ready, set, go"
the sound effects that seem purrings or moans lol
the whispered lyrics
the pre-chorus, chorus and rap part with the piano in the backgroud that give us the effect of euphoria and exhilaration
d. hints to the libidO mv
The themes of the parfumes Sundazed, Lil Fleur and Slow Dance also go with the vibes, symbolism and meanings of the libidO music video...
mid-summer’s daydream, warmth of an endless summer
teenage years, youthful emotions, rites-of-passage moment
journey of free love
(the whole music video basically)
collision of innocence and experience
(yoojung & kyubin)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(mill & love + nine)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
warm skin and breathless exchange
(nine & love)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(when they play baseball)
Tumblr media
fruity aromas
(mill & the tree)
Tumblr media
(the whole sequence where they eat fruits)
Tumblr media

AM I FASCINATED BY ALL OF THIS? YES. YES I AM.

A complete EGO ◎
How can J-hope represent the ego? Where did he met his persona and shadow? The universe BTS is creating is bigger and wider we ever thought.
The parking lot RM visits in Highlight Reel and the parking lot in J-Hope’s ‘Airplane’ MV are the same place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But there is more to it.  In RM’s ‘Seoul’ MV he called/got a call from someone to meet. I believe that someone was J-Hope.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
‘Airplane’ and ‘Seoul’ MV have some reference to each other. Especially in scenery and the angle what matters the most.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While ‘Seoul’ more focused on the city, ‘Airplane’ more focused on J-Hope. The main reason why RM call’s J-Hope is the fact that J-Hope was shown with the car during ‘Airplane’ and ever since it stayed with him. So if RM, who represent the persona, met with J-hope after the phone call, that would explane where ego got the persona qualities.  Here is important to mention that at the end of ‘Seoul’ MV the scenery make us assume that the driver was driving OUT from the city, into the mountains(symbol of self knowledge).
Tumblr media
How do we know it’t the mountains? in’ EGO’ MV J-Hope drives a car back from the mountains to the city, where he finally meets with his shadow and learn to live with. And this is how ego got complete and got both persona and shadow qualities. While in ‘Airplane’ J-Hope is in a city he is at one place only, at the parking lot, only. He been ‘daydreaming’ to leave but he needed a call from his persona to move, and once he returns to the city he is ready to live with his shadow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In chronological order it would be: -RM went to the car park to find someone, but the person wasn’t there, yet. -Later, when ‘Airplane’ come out we could see that, that someone was  J-Hope. -Then MONO got released and we could see how persona and ego met. -Finally in ‘EGO’ J-Hope return to the city, found his shadow and to live with. Completing the SELF.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also have to mention that Suga been representing shadow since AgustD and been in the city ever since. Suga represents an outspoken, not afraid, raw figure who does what he wants. Talks about desires, struggles, and bravely calling out others. Just how our shadow is. Raw.
Tumblr media
While Hope World is more about being in peace with yourself and just enjoying who you are while knowing yourself. Exactly how ego acts.
Mono, like how a mask of a persona acts is like a safe place. Comforting, just sitting there with you holding your hands. However if you need you can put it on to protect you. And that’s how the Rap Line got represented the Shadow, Ego, and Persona.
Disclaimer;  I did not meant any harm or disrespect to any of the solo releases! I love all of them, and there are way more and deeper meaning to every each of the individual songs than what I mentioned. My only intention was to share my thoughts on "what if they related"!

Vmin - Pink, Blue and purple
So I just wanted to talk a little bit about the colors Pink, Blue and Purple and how Vmin in particular seem to want us to pay attention to their hair and these colors. I’m a bit curious to see if the purple, pink and blue theme will mean something for BTS, not just Vmin. It could possibly even be linked to the comeback. Also, these three colors in particular represent bisexuality, but I have no idea if that is a reason for their use of these colors in particular.
Tumblr media
I know people have been talking about it since Hobi’s MV for Daydream where the BI colors appeared and now again after PERSONA I must say it would be interesting if that is really what they want to represent, even if only in the most subtle way. There being another man (Tae, lol) on the bed in front of a possible bi pride flag just seems like it could be done on purpose.
Tumblr media
But as a Vmin biased blog I can’t help but to look a bit closer at Tae and Jimin. We already know purple can in some ways be seen as a Taehyung, but also a Vmin, color (check my post Red + Blue = Vmin for a little more on the subject). BTS has made a thing of the “I purple you” and they all love using it. But there was a point where I started to think “Does Jimin want us to associate him with the color purple?”
That was when he colored it purple the first time for Seoul Music Awards on the 15th of January, but not only that, he also made sure to point at his hair and say "Army... Borahae!"
Tumblr media
At that time Tae also had blue hair, and lets just say that it made Vmin stand out.
Tumblr media
Now Jimin is back to purple again, and has been switching between pink and purple a few times. The pink is perhaps even more interesting, not because of the color itself but because it seems to be done with a purpose together with Taehyung.
On Jan. 12 they performed at Nagoya and here both Jimin and Tae showed off some new hair colors. Tae had blue and Jimin was back to pink. Even then some Vminies noted a possible connection to Tae and Jimin’s birthstones, which is probably a coincidence, but the colors were noted all the same.
Tumblr media
But it’s not impossible that they could have been looking up their birthstones. Vmin’s famous couple necklace is a garnet, which is a stone with certain meaning that could have been chosen on purpose as well. Just imagine if they know the meaning behind all these stones.
Tumblr media
Anyways, back to their hair. People talked about how Vmin had switched hair colors with each other, since Jimin recently had blue hair while Tae had pink, though not at the same time.
But after seeing them in these colors at the same time a lot of people talked about it and made comparisons to various famous duos with pink and blue hair, like the Ouran Host Club twins, little twin stars or even just compared them to cotton candy or bubblegum. The point is that it got a lot of attention, even to the point of getting some articles written about it.
For me what I started to think about was how BTS has used blue and pink several times before, for example on their different album versions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They also have the blue and pink for the Smeraldo flower. “Smeraldo” in flower language means “sincerity that could not be delivered”.
Tumblr media
We can guess that the colors might have some meaning. If it’s connected to why Vmin chose the hair colors who knows, maybe time will tell. I just find it interesting.
And then they let their hair fade for a while, but came back with pink and blue in Hong Kong. They repeated the same hair that they had already gotten a lot of joint attention for. So at this point it is really starting to feel like they want us to notice the hair, and again once more Vmin became a hot topic because of it.
But what it interesting here is that Vmin must already know that a lot of people will pay attention to their hair. Though I suppose it doesn’t have to mean anything in particular with the colors, considering Vmin also gained a lot of attention at the Grammy’s and their hair there, where Tae was greenish and Jimin had purple which also made them stand out a lot.
Tumblr media
But, what I find the most interesting from Hong Kong is their rings. Because Taehyung usually likes to match his jewelry with his hair and has done so plenty of times before. Meaning he pays attention to what he wears and how he matches with colors.
Tumblr media
So it was not difficult to notice that Tae had a huge pink ring on in Hong Kong, clashing with his own hair but matching with Jimin’s. And as if that wasn’t enough Jimin wore both pink and blue rings (he usually prefers plain silver).
Tumblr media
They both wore each other’s colors together so it’s difficult to ignore, and I personally can’t help but to think they want us to look at them and notice. (It also happens to be on their ring fingers.)
Tumblr media
Then they also wore their matching Chanel necklaces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So personally I am just really curious to see if this is something that well keep happening and perhaps even have relevance in the BTS comeback. Especially since we know PERSONA has a pink theme color.
Tumblr media
In PERSONA (as mentioned before) Namjoon possibly also has the bi pride flag just like Hobi in Daydream.
Tumblr media
Then there is of course the red and blue (korean flag and yin/yang) as well… Colors and symbolism that BTS has used a lot over the years. Basically I am just very curious to see if this is all connected and what this comeback will give us.
Tumblr media
Now I have no idea if all this red, blue, pink and purple will have anything to do with Vmin specifically. All I am saying is that it looks like Vmin in particular has gone out of the way to get noticed for these colors, and very often at the same time.
Tumblr media
BTS has used these colors a lot and even looking back in their MVs or performances we see a lot of these contrasting colors used. Again, all I am saying is that I notice these colors on Vmin and that it seems like they want me to notice.
Tumblr media
So in the small things, once again Jimin and Taehyung seems to want to send us some messages.
I hope you all enjoyed this post. I am sure I missed a lot of things as this was a bit rushed. I just wanted people to pay some closer attention to Vmin, and share this before the comeback to see if maybe it will prove to have some relevance. Either way I am super excited for the comeback!
Also, this tweet and the image url had some great timing.... BcVGay.
Tumblr media
Thanks for reading. Purple Vmin!

i feel like a lot of ppl on this site see a callout post for BTS, look at all of the problematic things they did in the past, and immediately ‘cancel’ them or see that as a valid reason to finally hate them or kpop in general, without considering the context of the situations or how the kpop industry works.
im definitely not here to defend the things they said or did, because it WAS gross. but those things are also from 3-5 years ago, have apologized for or had no control over whether it happened or not.
this post serves as a ‘clearing their name’ type of post, and will actually take a look into the problematic things theyve done and how they dealt with it, along with all the positive things they have done in the past few years. it will be pretty lengthy and will have lots of sources/screenshots. before i get into this though, i want to say that no one is obligated to like BTS, or forgive them for what they/their label did. you reserve the right to feel the way you feel, however that may be. that being said, this post is for people who never saw the apologies, who vaguely know who BTS are and saw only bad things about them, who want to get into BTS but aren’t sure if they’re extremely problematic, and more.
starting off, i want to explain the context behind the links of this post. i would link the original, but op has deleted it. so, obviously, yes bts did do all of the above. but like i said before, it was 3-5 (now, technically 6) years ago. when BTS debuted in 2013, they were all 21 or under. 15-16 year old Jungkook being the youngest, and Seokjin being the oldest at 21. they were merely teenagers and on top of this, had no or very little control of their self image. the hairstyles & photoshoots, the boys had no control over. bighit and bts’ stylists are in charge of these things. if you want someone to be angry at, be angry at bighit, bts’ label company. this includes RM’s hairstyle back in the ‘No More Dream’ era / early debut days, Suga’s dreads, and any other hairstyle, clothing, or photoshoot that caused controversy. (in case anyone, who isn’t familiar with kpop, is confused; kpop label companies usually control everything their idols do. from what they wear, to what their songs are about, to if they’re even allowed to date. it’s a very disgusting industry that has a history of abuse, but that’s an entirely different subject i could get into.)
here is an article where BigHit apologizes for the antisemitism + the ‘bombing’ shirt Jimin wore, and they explicitly state that “the band members were ‘in no way responsible’ for the controversy.” which further proves my point that the boys had no control over what they wore/how they looked.
here is a thread about RM’s racist behavior in the past, and admitting + apologizing for what he did, including how he has changed certain lyrics of songs because they could be seen as (or were) misogynist. to this day, RM hates and regrets how his hair looked at the time.
in case anyone doesn’t want to read the entire thread, RM says this: “As I went through the year 2016 I came to think about that. My words or behaviors, regardless of my intentions, could cause troubles or hurt others feelings. In the process, I thought I need to hold responsibility for that and I need to think about such things. What I said or did would not be undone. I thought so. Then I learned how to admit myself. [...] Anyways, to become a better person, I need to hold responsibility for what I do. I need to change my mindset. I need to change my way of thinking if it’s wrong. I learned I need to hear from many people. I mean, I came to think like that. Now when I do something, I think, ‘how would people feel about my act?’”
again, this is not excuses for what they did, but rather how/why it happened or how they had no choice in the matter & what they had to say about it afterwards. BTS are living, growing people who have acknowledged their mistakes and apologized. in RM’s speech at the U.N. he says this: “Maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday’s me is still me. I am who I am today, with all my faults. Tomorrow I might be a tiny bit wiser, and that’s me, too. These faults and mistakes are what I am, making up the brightest stars in the constellation of my life. I have come to love myself for who I was, who I am, and who I hope to become.”
since the apology part of this post is mostly over, i wanted to talk about the good things that bts has done in the past few years. things like their continuous support of the LGBT community, the powerful messages in their music, the bending of the ‘typical kpop style’, etc.
-
over the years and as their popularity grew, BTS have actually managed to seemingly take more control over what they stand for and how they present themselves and their music. since around 2017, BTS have made a very impactful social stance with their string of albums & their concept: “Love Yourself”. for people who don’t know, this concept consists of three albums over the course of 2016-2018 and are in order as follows: LOVE YOURSELF 承 'Her', LOVE YOURSELF 轉 'Tear' LOVE YOURSELF 結 'Answer'
the summarized version of the stories are love at first sight, the failing/one-sided-ness of said love, and then learning how to love and accept yourself before you are fully able to love others. along with this concept came the partnership with the anti-violence campaign, UNICEF, who work to protect young people from all over the world. the entire album concept consistently promotes self-love and acceptance, something that is not very explored in kpop or even western pop music in general. while some of the songs in “LY: Her” use female pronouns, almost all the rest of them across all the albums use gender neutral or no pronouns. this was done intentionally by RM (who writes/produces a majority of their songs), as he believes “feelings/love transcend genders, cultures, and barriers between people.” the title song of “LY: Her”, “DNA”, (as stated in the screenshot) further expresses this idea with the lyrics: “None of this is a coincidence Because we’re the two who found our destiny - I only focus on you You steer me a little harder The DNA of the genesis wants you This is inevitable, I love us We are the only true lovers”
and in “Serendipity”, as well:
“The universe has moved for us Without missing a single thing Our happiness was meant to be Cuz you love me, and I love you”
while, obviously, there is one ‘her’ pronoun in the song, most of it expresses what RM says. and bighit being bighit, im sure they had some say in how the lyrics were presented, esp since it was the title song. what i’m trying to say is that i truly believe BTS are doing their best to support the lgbt community, even with the tight restrictions that their label and the kpop genre puts on them. being on the topic of LGBT+ and support of the community, here is suga pretty much saying he’s bi. + and of course, his iconic lyrics in “Cypher Pt.3″
here is the bisexual flag colors in j-hope’s music video for his song “Daydream”.
RM saying he liked “Same Love” twice as much after reading about the lyrics, and Suga outright saying “Nothing is wrong. Everyone is equal.” in the first screenshot.
Jungkook’s love and support for troye sivan + Jimin wearing jeans with lyrics of troye sivan’s “Youth” on them
bts defying gender norms over and over and over.
fondness & friendship with/of multiple lgbt artists
RM referencing the film “Moonlight” in the song “4 O’Clock”
RM wrote the lyrics for GLAM’s song “XXO”,  that say “Are you a boy? Girl? I don’t care, passion is the key”
Jungkook and Jimin covering the song “We Don’t Talk Anymore” and not changing the pronouns.
an excerpt from RM’s speech at the U.N. ;  “Tell me your story. I want to hear your voice, and I want to hear your conviction. No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin color, gender identity: speak yourself.” + full transcript here.
and these are just things i can think of off the top of my head. as for their political stance and social messages in their music, & talking about other things considered taboo in kpop (such as mental health/illness), here you go:
-
suga talking about (his) mental health and struggles in various songs on his mixtape.
their ENTIRE “IDOL” music video is basically a response to how people stereotype them/the kpop genre & have said that they are “too westernized”. the song includes a “traditional African-Korean sound”, the boys wearing hanboks/traditional korean clothing, on top of lots of korean history references & symbolism, and how they take pride in what they do. here is a really good video analyzing & explaining the mv. heres 3 more posts explaining why it sounds/looks the way it does, and how BTS did it intentionally. in case nobody has seen/heard the song, here is the first verse: “You can call me artist (artist) You can call me idol (idol) No matter what you call me I don’t care I’m proud of it”
the song “Epiphany” on “LY: Answer”, is (as you can imagine) a song about having an epiphany about loving yourself. the lyrics are pretty self-explanatory. the chorus: “I’m the one I should love in this world Shining me, precious soul of mine I finally realized so I love me Not so perfect but so beautiful I’m the one I should love”
RM talking about his mental health/depression in “Forever Rain” on his mixtape “mono.” + as well as in “Reflection.” the outro of the song which i wanted to add, is just a repeated “I wish I could love myself.”
the lyrics to the song “I’m Fine” on LY: Answer express being able to love yourself without relying on somebody to fix you or make you happier, because only you can complete yourself.
the outro to the album, “Answer: Love Myself” concludes the Love Yourself album series, and has extremely beautiful lyrics. the full translation here, if anyone wants to read all of them. it’s about, as im sure you can guess, loving yourself even with all your flaws and mistakes & striving to be a better person each day.
-
SO TLDR; BTS absolutely have made mistakes, like every person does, but have apologized and learned from those mistakes. they have moved on, and have done more good in this world than bad. they have grown over the past 6 years and continue to grow every single day. as a young gay fan, their message and their presence means a lot to me. that fact that they’re so popular and use that power to spread kindness & self-acceptance (no matter Who you are), is really important especially in today’s society. doubly to youth who, themselves, struggle with mental illness and family issues, school/education, and any typical problem young people face in their lives. i have struggled with self-hate, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, trauma, the whole ordeal. their songs have helped me heal, even if only a little. and they give me another reason to keep going everyday. even if you don’t like their music or the boys themselves, there is no denying the positive impact they’ve made on millions of people, adults and children alike. BTS are absolutely not perfect, but they acknowledge this and do their best to BE the best they can be.

BTS RAPLINE TRIPTYCH PAINTING~
<- So Far Away -> Awakening <- Daydream ->
- - 23ish Hours later and it is complete! - -
Now starts a very long explanation (which I will try to keep as concise & understandable as possible but... well, you know me lol that probably won’t happen lol) as to what the rapline’s solo mixtapes and this triptych means to me...
I’ll start at the beginning, which isn’t the first piece I created (which was J-Hope’s painting), but actually the final piece I made; Suga’s.
Suga’s mixtape maybe spoke to me, personally, the most out of all of them; the roughness of the tracks, along with the raw and meaningful lyrics are some of the most emotionally charged tracks Bangtan have produced.
I named Suga’s piece ‘So Far Away’, which is the final track on the album, and one of my personal favourites. Not only is it Suran’s haunting vocals that add a really dream-like feel to the track, but the lyrics really give the concept of a ‘journey’ of self-love (which is a big overall theme of this triptych).
A sense of something in our pasts being so far away from who and where we are now, but also the idea that the place we want to go also seems so far away in the distance... It’s the beginning of a journey, and the beginnings of anything are always difficult.
The imagery to accompany this is more subtle than the others, since the imagery in the two music videos released during this album (Agust D (title) and Give It To Me) are less about this more ‘melancholic’ theme. So I went with the colour scheme of the music videos (darker greens, turquoises and blues, with bursts of yellow, orange and red as part of the flames and dramatic lighting). I also used the glimpse of a ladder we see in Agust D (ladders are steeped in lots of traditional symbology, and I also wanted something angular and red to contrast nicely with the green background, so I won’t go into too much about that).
And although the music videos are quite dark, I wanted to keep the light and clouds around the moon (which I’ll get to in a minute) bright. And although I feel like I could have made it a touch darker, I like the overall vibe of the piece, as it doesn’t feel too gloomy.
(Important thing to mention, I didn’t create this triptych to psychoanalyse everything in the Rapline’s mixtapes which may or may not relate to their mental health. This piece is a wholly personal piece, with using my own emotional responses to the mixtapes as a way to look at recovering and learning to love yourself...)
The oversized clothes (with a big focus on the folds of the clothing) was inspired by the Spanish Surrealist artist Remedios Varo, who I only discovered recently but immediately fell in love with her dream-like paintings. In particular, this piece was inspired by the first panel in her own triptych she painted between 1961-62.
Tumblr media
This piece (called Toward the Tower) was another starting basis for background styles and colour-schemes, as well as the more stylised (but detailed) figures, clothing and buildings. The piece is Varo’s own commentary on life in a convent, and the ideas of entrapment and freedom (which are continued throughout the triptych). And although this differs greatly from my own triptych, I think the way in which Varo approached the artworks and theme are something I wanted to emulate in my own piece.
Now onto the moon iconography I included. Now, because I initially started with J-Hope, who I made into the Sun was more of an after thought, this idea only really came about because of that. But as soon as I made that choice, I realised how perfect it would be to have Suga be his seemingly ‘opposite’: the moon.
The moon gets its ‘power’ (so to speak) from the light of the sun, and the gravity that binds it to our planet and allows it to control tides and effect seasons (I think... Look, I don’t pretend to know everything about the moon, ok, I just think she’s beautiful and doing a great job...). So the idea behind this is that in fact to start a journey of self-love or recovery, we often have to look to others for advice and support. (This may be actually seeking out help from a professional, chatting to a friend or family member, or simply discussing your thoughts openly to a diary or something similar...). We need to make an effort to share our burden with ‘others’, even if it is difficult.
(I don’t pretend to know everything, or anything, about dealing with mental health, by the way. But I do know a bit about learning to love yourself, and dealing with moving on from a rough patch... Basically, I’m only speaking from my personal experiences so please don’t come for me....)
I think Yoongi, along with the Agust D mixtape, fit perfectly with the concept of the moon. A big part of this is the cycles of the moon, and the very nature of change and movement which that encompasses. I went with a full moon in the sky, as it usually indicates the end of the cycle (i.e. the end of your difficult past) and suggests the start of a new one (i.e. the start of a brighter future).
The flames are mainly a crossover from Rm’s piece, although fire is a big theme in Suga’s music videos (and personality in general). Though I will go more into the fire in Rm’s piece...
The final thing I want to talk about for Suga’s part is the lyrics I included on the ribbon. I decided instead of trying to wade through all the songs on each mixtape to find the perfect lyric, I’d instead take the lyrics from their more reason Trivia tracks on the Love Yourself: Answer album.
Suga’s, which is called Seesaw (and is my personal favourite, I might add), speaks of a kind of ‘seesaw’ battle that exists between himself and someone (or something?) else. I’ll admit, I haven’t looked into the reasoning or real meaning behind the song, but I was drawn to the lyrics: 니가 없는 이 시소 위를 걸어 니가 없던 처음의 그때처럼 (I’m walking on this seesaw without you just like the beginning when you weren’t here). I interpreted this as the ‘you’ representing the version of yourself that you want to be, versus the version of yourself that you are at that point in time... The precariousness of walking on a seesaw and trying to balance public personas and internal monologues is a very poignant theme, even to people like you or me. There’s also a sadness to the lyrics, the idea that the situation feels hopeless, like it was before. It’s a cycle, perhaps, of self-hatred (something we all get into now and again). And, just like on a seesaw, one step in the wrong direction and we can easily fall back into old ways and viewpoints of ourselves...
Primarily, Suga’s piece is a beginning. The beginning to one of the most difficult journeys we take in life; the journey to loving ourselves.
The next piece is actually not Rm, despite his being the central panel. Obviously, the colours and imagery are supposed to flow into each other in the order they are presented, but I decided half way through that it made more sense in terms of my message to have J-Hope’s be the actual ‘second panel’.
So, here is where I’ll talk about the very first piece of this triptych I created; J-Hope and ‘Daydream’.
The whole idea of creating a triptych for the rapline’s mixtapes came to me as soon as J-Hope had released Hope World. I love the stark contrast between each of the member’s styles, both musically and aesthetically, as well as the way that they all reflect an overall ‘bangtan’ feel.
And actually out of all the music videos, ‘Daydream’ is probably one of my favourites. The whole vibe, use of colour, editing style, and the way it works seamlessly with the song is basically perfection, and it fits with J-Hope’s personality and music style brilliantly as well. And although the album itself didn’t speak to me as much as the other two member’s had; it still really showcases the talent and diversity of J-Hope’s music ability.
Right, now to my artwork... So I was obviously inspired heavily by the Daydream music video, both in the aesthetics and symbolism (aka the fish). It also fits perfectly with the surrealist style I was going for. The overall brightness of the mv was perfect for the sense of ‘hope’ I was trying to portray in this piece.
So this was based on the very last panel of Varo’s triptych, which is called ‘The Escape’.
Tumblr media
Much as the title suggests, the final panel is an escape up into the mountains. It suggests a climb away from dark storm clouds into the light. And my own interpretation in my piece was definitely based on this sense of freedom. But to fit with both J-Hope’s mixtape (aka the Blue Side outro track which deserved a full song!!!!!!), my own personal connections and also to fit with the aesthetics of Varo’s piece, I wanted to include the element of blue and the storm clouds.
The main reason behind this is to reflect the fact that even if someone appears happy on the outside, there’s always a chance something darker and melancholic... This doesn’t undermine or make the happiness you may see or feel any less real, it’s just important to acknowledge that hardships exist and are all a part of life... Going through tough times, having ‘scars’, shows that you have survived!
The lyrics I used from his Trivia: Just Dance reflect this idea too. They translate roughly as ‘my dreams that once had no answer, now become something we can relate to’... Also, the position of Hoseok’s head (which was partly just because I really like the reference image because he look beautiful to be quite honest), looking away as if towards the future, fits with this concept too.
I think I wanted this piece to mainly be the dream of recovery, the dream version of yourself... The bright sunshine in your life that you hope one day will be reality... Putting it and Suga’s either side of the Rm central piece helps it to reflect the idea of Past - Present - Future. Not necessarily in a chronological sense, but more the way in which they react and connect to eachother.
The final piece of the series is the central Rm panel, which is also the one with the most symbology.
I actually did this one as a part of a collab with other artists to celebrate Namjoon’s birthday (it had to the hashtag ‘infinitereasonstolovejoonie’ and it was the cutest thing ever!!!).
Ok so there’s a lot to breakdown with this piece, so I’m going to start first with the reference I used for Rm’s head. I knew I wanted to use something from the Joke music video, because I really loved the straitjacket look coupled with the extreme chiaroscuro used in the mv. Unfortunately, most of the reference images were really bad quality (since they were mostly just screencaps), as well as them being difficult to draw angels, making it all the more of a battle for me to draw... I like that I made him look down, purely because it both contrasts with Suga and J-Hope, and also in the way it suggests both defeat and hope. Defeat, in the way looking down is linked with shame, and hope in the idea that it could almost suggest that Rm is about to look up...
The background also links to these contrasting ideas. The dark blue and stormy clouds, mixed with the flashes of lightening help to create a sense of the phrase of ‘every cloud has a silver lining’. This idea was mainly my own invention, since most of the references (including the music videos and Varo’s paintings) didn’t include lightning. The colourscheme was vaguely inspired by both the Joke music video as well as Varo’s central panel.
Tumblr media
Titled as ‘Embroidering Earths Mantel’, it is probably the piece I took the least inspiration from out of the three. Varo’s piece shows the girls in the convent she had known to be trapped and forced to work, a hooded figure in darker clothes overseeing them... This sense of danger and being unable to escape was the main concept I took away from this... Another thing that I took from this was the use of the yellow in contrast to the dark and stormy sky (which I chose to do flames, which were taken from the Awakening music video).
Speaking of the Awakening mv, I decided to only really use the flames from the aesthetics, but still use the name as the title of the piece. ‘Awakening’, much like Rm’s looking down head, is evocative of moving from one state (being asleep/looking down) to another (being awake/looking up). It’s not awake, it’s not final or definitive. It’s a transitional period.
Put in the centre of Suga and J-Hope’s pieces, Rm’s represents the ‘present’. A time when you’re working through recovery, or where you’re beginning to learn to love yourself. It’s not an easy or particularly ‘happy’ time, and it often contains a lot of hardships and difficult to decisions.
I thought this fitted the best with Rm, who is the leader of BTS. He has to carry a lot of responsibility on his shoulders, which I represented literally in my piece with the 6 lightbulbs/microphones that drip onto his shoulders (this imagery was inspired by both the Do You music video, as well as the album cover). Another interpretation, and probably the one I was aiming to be more prominent, was the idea that although being a leader means he is responsible for a lot of the groups public image/etc, the other members aren’t a burden, but instead act as an anchor for his strength... You can almost see the ‘drips’ acting as puppet strings; the other members lifting him up when times get tough.
This links back to the idea of the moon I talked about in Suga’s piece. Although recovery and learning to love yourself, or whatever it is you’re dealing with, can’t be solved immediately just because you have a loving family or friends, having a person you trust to talk to can help you deal with things a lot easily then trying to go it alone... This is probably one of the most difficult things in dealing with mental health struggles, since most of us are really reluctant to ask for help in fear of being an annoyance to others... We always make excuses that our problems, whatever they may be, aren’t worthwhile discussing or talking about since everyone has their own problems and you don’t want to burden them even more...
(And although this is advice that I rarely take myself, I just want to say Your problems are not worthless, you are not a burden to others, and you deserve to be happy!)
The final part of Rm’s piece is the lyrics I chose from his Trivia: Love. 너 땜에 알았어 왜 사람과 사랑이 비슷한 소리가 나는지 ‘I found out because of you Why “person” (saram) and “love” (sarang) sound similar’. I chose this both because I wanted it to fit with a ‘reason to love joonie’ (i.e. his brilliant lyric writing skills), and also for the way it relates to my own experiences.
The ‘person’ in my case is less an actual singular being, and more the art community online and the k-pop fandom... So without going into details, the last few years haven’t been the easiest for me, so having the k-pop community to enjoy memes with, listen to and get excited about music with and to be artistically inspired by really helped me get through feeling lonely and down... And although I’ve (luckily) never had any horrific experiences, I know that a lot of people who like k-pop and are a part of community have (or are having them), and having k-pop around has helped them survive the most difficult situations...
I wanted this triptych to both a personal and universal piece, something people can relate to and understand (as well as be able to appreciate on a purely aesthetic level)....
I hope that everyone who has taken time to read this ridiculously long essay about this piece get’s this sense of inclusion, which is something I truly admire about BTS in particular...
Just remember, if you’re going through a difficult time, things really will get better! Recovery, Life, Self Love; it’s all a journey that there’s no guidebook to...
And to quote BTS’s ‘Young Forever’:
~~Dream : Hope : Keep Going : Keep Going~~
Thank you for reading!
[this piece is available on my redbubble btw]

XI’s 25 Favorite Kpop MVs of 2018
Full playlist can be found here.
(PSA: For the purposes of this list, I’m counting all releases made by a Korea-based music company as a “Kpop MV,” regardless of what language the song was originally in.)
-
25. “Always You” ~ Astro
Tumblr media
While this MV is very aesthetically pleasing, there’s not a whole lot to differentiate it from many of the other MVs that came out last year that have the members stand or dance in oddly lit rooms (aside from some interesting lighting direction and some great symbolism going on in some of the shots), which is why it comes in squarely at number 25 instead of higher on the list. I more like this MV because of what it represents and the milestone it marks in Astro’s career. 2018 was a really rough year for Astro. You get the feeling that the boys kind of had to grow up fast last year, perhaps faster than they might have wanted to, and that shows in the MV’s more somber, mature tone, so markedly different from the other concepts they’ve done before. And yet, despite everything, they’re still together, still Astro, and this MV combined with the song reads like a love letter to the fans who stuck by them and didn’t abandon them during their hour of need. So as a huge fan of theirs, I really appreciate the sentiment behind this MV, which is why I love it so much despite it’s simpler style than some of the other MVs I could have chosen for this spot.
-
24. “Puzzle Moon” ~ GWSN
Tumblr media
I absolutely adore this MV’s aesthetic. I’m a sucker for star and space themes, and the sets in this MV are gorgeous. I wish it expounded more on the concept itself, but for what it is, it’s a very lovely MV with great costume design and dancing as well.
-
23. “Lullaby” ~ Got7
Tumblr media
I love the whimsical, energetic feel of this MV a lot, and the special effects are just the right mix of realistic and corny, just like a dream that you accidentally stumbled into and are now just going along for the ride. It’s just a lot of fun to watch, and the members look like they had fun shooting it, too.
-
22. “Zero” ~ Minseo
Tumblr media
Basically “Parkour: The MV,” and believe me, it’s just as awesome as it sounds.
-
21. “Secret Garden” ~ Oh My Girl
Tumblr media
It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Oh My Girl’s fantasy concepts, and this one hits all the right notes for me. I just love the theme of whimsy and wonder hidden in plain sight, those fleeting moments of beauty that come and go so quickly that you’re almost unsure whether you actually saw them or not, and how the MV translates that into some absolutely gorgeous visuals.
-
20. “Soulmate” ~ Zico feat. IU
Tumblr media
This MV is stinkin’ adorable. That’s all I have to say about it. That, and I really like how chill it is. It’s just really sweet and really calming, kind of surreal, but also immensely charming.
-
19. “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” ~ Blackpink
Tumblr media
After an entire year, my girls finally came back, and they killed it, just like I hoped they would. I just love all the the bright, vibrant colors, the gorgeous sets and outfits. This MV is a pure visual feast, no deeper meaning required, and I love every second of it.
-
18. “You and I” ~ Dreamcatcher
Tumblr media
The dark rock queens are back, and they are back with a vengeance. I love the heavy, oppressive atmosphere in this MV, all the creepy, chilling visuals, and how it builds off the story found in the previous MVs by reintroducing the spider the girls tormented in an earlier video.
-
17. “Bingle Bangle” ~ AOA
Tumblr media
Video game concepts are always fun, but this one goes the extra mile by incorporating cute little pixel animations of the members and a bunch of delightful animated characters into the MV. It also shows a girl gamer instead of making a guy be the one playing the little Diner Dash-esque game, which I enjoyed a lot.
-
16. “My Star” ~ K.Will
Tumblr media
A super charming and adorable budding romance in just over 3 minutes with cute sheep and star motifs, what’s not to love?
-
15. “Daydream” ~ J-Hope
Tumblr media
If there was ever an MV to sum up a single person’s personality in a little under 4 minutes, it’s this one. It’s bright and colorful, zany and weird, and occasionally quiet and contemplative, just like BTS’ resident dance machine and literal ray of personified sunshine himself. I also just love the little literary references he threw in here and there, especially the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy one.
-
14. “Namanana” ~ Lay
Tumblr media
Holy smokes, the imagery in this MV. Give me a 50k fanfic about the adventures of beleaguered postman Lay traversing a post-apocalyptic fantasy world to deliver packages to the various colorful and wild characters he comes across, and give it to me now, I will read every word and review every chapter.
-
13. “Hot Potato” ~ N.Flying
Tumblr media
An exuberant, energetic, tongue-in-cheek piece of social satire disguised as yet another “I’m so awesome” song, and I love it. I can’t believe it’s been over a year since this song came out, too, and I’ve had to wait 12 months to talk about it. Suffice it to say, it’s great, you should go watch it.
-
12. “1, 2, 3!” ~ Seungri
Tumblr media
I cannot believe this entire MV was done in one take. The hours of rehearsal time this must have taken blows my mind. And yet it’s so much fun that I doubt most people would notice the sheer amount of effort it took to produce it on their first watch because they’re all too busy jamming out to it. And tbh who could blame them, the whole thing is a bop.
-
11. “District 9″ ~ Stray Kids
Tumblr media
I am an absolute sucker for dystopian concepts, so this MV hit almost all my buttons. I do wish they had focused a bit more on a cohesive narrative throughout the MV (like what the trailer for their album teased), but still, what is there is still awesome, and makes for one hell of a debut video. I very much look forward to seeing what this group will offer in the future.
-
10. “Star” ~ Vromance
Tumblr media
I love that the story of this MV is told solely through the dance. No elaborate sets or costumes or special effects, just two people in a room telling the story of their relationship with their bodies and a few assorted props, and it’s beautiful.
-
9. “Singularity” ~ V
Tumblr media
This MV is just pure art. I absolutely love all the symbolism with the flowers and masks, and the choreography has some of the most creative use of props I’ve seen in quite a long time.
-
8. “Scentist” ~ VIXX
Tumblr media
Pure art x2. The Concept Kings deliver once again. The only reason it’s not higher on this list is because I don’t feel they prioritized the MV storyline as much as they arguably should have (especially considering their reference material was a book about a serial killer perfumer), but it’s still so damn Aesthetic™ that it doesn’t really matter that much.
-
7. “Call Call Call!” ~ Seventeen
Tumblr media
The best words I can think of to describe this MV is “delightful chaos feat. motorcycles and telephones.” I love all the different aesthetics personified by the three different motorcycle gangs the members are split into, and the story, while simple is very clear and easy to follow: bike gangs want phone, bike gangs fight over phone, bike gangs bust some sweet moves while fighting over said phone, and it’s a rollicking good time all around. Definitely my favorite SVT MV to date.
-
6. “Paint Me” ~ Mamamoo
Tumblr media
You might be wondering why this MV is up so high on this list when it’s so simple compared to some others on this list that have more flashy effects, compelling storyline, or complicated choreography. It’s because ultimately, an MV’s job is to support the song being sung, and if you can do that simply by the sheer strength of the visuals alone, then you don’t need any of those other things to make a compelling video. The simple dresses, precise use of vibrant color, minimal use of props, they all perfectly complement the song, and it all comes together to make one absolutely gorgeous package.
-
5. “Forever Rain” ~ RM
Tumblr media
It’s no secret that I love animated music videos. The artistry and dedication that goes into them is nothing short of mind-boggling, and every one of them is so unique and special in their own ways. This one is no exception. The sketchy, abstract, slightly unsettling black and white animation style is incredibly distinctive; I don’t remember ever seeing animation quite like it before. I also think the MV is perfectly edited; long, slow shots that force you to slow down and bask in the music and the lyrics, interspersed with precise sections of quick cuts that perfectly mirror the music.
-
4. “Coco Bottle” ~ Penomeco
Tumblr media
I absolutely love the animation style in this MV, how bold and vibrant and fluid it is. These shot compositions and transitions are absolutely incredible, every one leading perfectly into the next. I also appreciate that the MV tells a single coherent narrative from beginning to end, finishing on perhaps a more bittersweet note than the upbeat beginning leads you to expect.
-
3. “Pop/Stars” ~ K/DA
Tumblr media
Yup, an MV for a virtual Kpop band done to market the League of Legends championship made it to number 3 on this list. LOOK AT THAT ANIMATION, THOUGH, CAN YOU EVEN BLAME ME?? The transitions, the camera movements, the attention to detail in each of the girls’ dance sequences, the use of color-! Riot Games outdid themselves with this work of art. When it comes to sheer spectacle, this MV comes out on top, hands down.
-
2. “Fake Love” ~ BTS
Tumblr media
I’ve been really missing BTS’ artsy, story-focused MVs, so this came as a real breath of fresh air when it was released. I just adore all the symbolism in it, all the callbacks to their previous MVs and story trailers and short films. The cinematography is excellent, and I don’t even want to know how much money they spent on props and sets and effects.
-
1. “Our Page” ~ SHINee
Tumblr media
This probably the single most genuine MV I’ve ever seen, Kpop or otherwise. No one feels like they’re acting in it, no one feels like they’re playing a character. This feels like a very real, very intimate look into the lives and grieving processes of four men who lost a brother in one of the most tragic ways possible. I may not be a Shawol, but I still cry every. Single.Time. Not exaggerating. It serves as a very much needed moment of catharsis both for themselves, their fans, and anyone who Jonghyun has touched over the years with his life and his music, and I can’t think of a better way to end this list than with this bittersweet tribute to an incredible band and the five talented souls that comprise it.

Airplane Analysis
this is the analysis for Hoseok’s mixtape’s 6th track: airplane
i will be analysing several components - music, lyrics and aesthetics
disclaimer: this is just my personal opinion, feel free to disagree. do let me know your thoughts in my ask box
Tumblr media
overall: this is the 2nd and last mv of hoseok’s mix tape. and based on the daydream mv, it was most likely that airplane would be the one with an mv. a laid-back song honestly but it definitely had the hint of hoseok inside.
music: so the song starts off with some synths, a little taste of what the song would sound like. honestly, this is one of the songs that had an intro that actually leads on to the song itself unlike the other tracks that had unrelated introductions. interesting way to be honest. an interesting choice of synths and then at 0:07, there is this sound that sounds like a bird’s cry. ( don’t get me wrong, but it sounds like possibly a synthesized eagle/hawk ).
but anyway, moving on, there is this twinkling that comes in right before hoseok starts off at 0:16 and here, there is no percussion but just a melody of synths.
his vocal tone here is really interesting because he tries to enunciate each word well. only at 0:26, another layer of synth is being introduced to complement the main beat. then at 0:31, did hoseok did some adlibs as a lead-in before the chorus comes in at full force with the introduction of some different synths that become the percussion.
the chorus has a lot of adlibs in between as a form of doubling and to also fill in the spaces in between.
at the same time, there is the introduction of a keyboard being played, but a rather simple melody. only at 0:45, did the chorus end and the whole beat simmers down to one where hoseok continues his verse.
hoseok raps really calmly here with some doubling here and only did the beat change at 1:04 in which he speeds up his rapping and then one could hear that hoseok is full out doubling. then at 1:14, hoseok managed to include the sound of a camera going off to complement his lyrics. then he quickly wraps up his verse with ‘god bless’ before he moves on to the chorus at 1:20.
see, at this chorus, there isn’t much difference except for the fact that this chorus has an extended part even including a ‘hey yeah’ at 1:43 before hoseok wraps up his part. hoseok even includes the doubling here as well with ‘smile smile smile’.
only at 1:52 was there a change when the song went to the bridge. the same underlying beat to be like the intro. only at 2:08 did the percussion come in. not to mention the sound effect at 2:17 as well, like wind just blew. then at 2:20, he increases the pace of his rap.
then at 2:24, the chorus comes in again but the difference is with the underlying beat of the song, it’s rather empty here. only at 2:40 did the chorus come at fill force with the extended version of it.
only at 2:57 did the song come to and end to sound like the beginning of the song but inclusive of the sound of the airplane flying over and ending with the twinkling sound.
lyrics: this song talk about how Hoseok feels as though he achieved his dream when he flies in an airplane, especially considering that he has never flown in one before.
God bless
=
I still can’t believe it A native of Gwangju’s admiration for flight In my dream’s place that was up high, high I’m flying above the beautiful world Always, when I’m onboard I still think about The excitement I felt flying towards Japan for the first time Because that launched my dream Because it made the present now Everywhere Right now, I’m an issue man, when the flash goes off I will place blessings for a safe arrival God bless
here, Hoseok talks about his story about how he didn't really think that he would actually board a plane until bangtan flew to Japan for the first time for their activities and promotions.
he also talks about that now wherever bangtan goes, there’s a lot of news reporters and hence the flashes go off and bangtan makes the headlines - hence an issue man.
and he would conclude a safe arrival etc.
Drink champagne in my airplane
=
I remember me from that time When the parched grounds set me on fire I ran looking at the blue sky Now I fly to my heart’s content in the airplane
Someone curses the heck of me Those people’s jealousy make them lonely I don’t care, it just makes me laugh Drink champagne in my airplane
at first, i couldnt understand the lyrics of Hoseok’s chorus, but i guess it meant as though now he has an escape if he is in the airplane unlike when he is on ground and reality sinks in ( maybe i dont know )
but the next verse and he is blunt about saying that haters are just lonely people and he’ll enjoy his time in the airplane sipping on his champagne
=
Above the clouds everyday Above the clouds everyday My Feel above the clouds Check it above the clouds Chemistry with the clouds All day long with the clouds The fun of riding the clouds, looking at the clouds fade in You guys won’t know maybe Because of the few years of flying When my mileage is at few hundred thousands Is when I comfort you guys who weren’t able to achieve it I will give you a present with those flight points Love airplane mode All care is off, regardless of whatever someone is doing I’ll just keep to first (class) And look at the night sky To match with my current place
this bridge and extended verse, Hoseok shows his versatility in his rapping.
but looking at the lyrics, i guess one would be able to relate to him especially if you keep on flying, the excitement of being in a plane fades off eventually.
his subtle diss about giving the mileage points as a gift to his haters who aren't able to fly as much ( basically implying that they didnt make it big )
but those last few lines, Hoseok says he’ll keep to first class to match his current place ( aka bangtan made it big and achieved so much etc )
really, well-written lyrics that come from experience
Reference: Colour Coded ©
aesthetics: i feel as though the aesthetics here are very interesting, showing Hoseok in a lot of barren places such as empty carparks both inside and outside etc, lots of scenes focus on Hoseok
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also, not to mention the fixed symbol of the airplane throughout the mv
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also, that beginning scenes of the city view that one could probably see in an airplane taking off or landing
Tumblr media
moving on, there are several scenes of Hoseok in a room with the background changing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also, those few close-up scenes of Hoseok in which the colour schemes change, heck yes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
such a chill video aesthetics overall with little fixed colour palettes
last thoughts: truly an interesting song that showcases hoseok’s feelings towards riding an airplane etc.

Time and space seem so vast; I remember descriptions of the Pacific in 'All That Is' although I had been meaning not to talk about that novel or descriptions of the pine-trees in 'The Old Capital' or a scene I 'fancied' where after the sinking of the MV Sewol ferry and mass-drowning of high school young people in 2014 my 'dolls' went to Lake Baikal and Arkangelsk in Russia to basically play Penitent Magdalen together.  This novel that I had called 'Flowers on Water' which is too light and poetic and later focused on the poem 'Flowers 1881' about the shortcomings of Christian missionary orphanage-education of non-white students in Western America might never get written but I feel the Almanac from whence this poem and some still horribly relevant critiques of assessment-methods and the burdens laid on teachers remain relevant to this day.  Although, that said, 9 months is way too little for both students and teachers and makes especially the latter morally worse IMO; which is why despite much I'm still dreaming and daydreaming about Seoul Language Institute, Korea Poly, Avalon, Bovinus Daejeon, Little Socie Cheongju(?), Alto, maybe Kumon, and much else as these are healthy and edifying at numerous levels.  Though, online ed. might be best for many girls in Gen. Alpha, whose profile profoundly depressed me though old ppl always say stuff like that; and in the era of long Covid where classroom ed. is a risk to all. I am upset and disappointed in myself as well as in Milwaukee and my parents (mom screaming 'winter is coming' as if it had been GoT, a show I refused to look at, that sounded her to her highest note), for sinking in to or indulging itself in 'the condition of fiction' which is neither truth nor lie though idiots and fags and perpetual adolescents want to mine Cultural Studies for infinite insight and to keep sinking back in to childhood by night, presumably b/c they don't have a good marriage or any marriage or any friend I don't even know.  Maybe it's a characteristic of Millennials and I am, like KJ Park used to talk about, in the Lacanian 'Mirror Stage' with someone or something (whereas in past Milwaukee had been in 'Symbolic Stage' or 'passive-aggressive').  He also said 'the Real Stage is d/Desire' which annoyed me since I just wanted to marry w/in my putative profession and get a domicile someday and wasn't interested in taking over CN via edubusiness.  I didn't even want to touch Deleuze, Lacan, CG Jung or anyone like that again.  Marie Lee's on about Rilke on Twitter which reminded me of understanding the 'pulse' of the elegies after I saw a picture of somebody by the sea long ago and eventually relating it 'This Burns My Heart' which I also consider problematic in a kind of Updike vein &c.   I'm trying to make peace with everyone above and lateral, 'my new old family.'  I cannot understand why so many are so casual or triumphalist or flip or trifling haptic(?) when they could die at any moment.  Iron the Rapper died in Korea and he's about my age although I never beat my girlfriend or bragged about being a baller nor did I (knowingly) collaborate with massive homicidally abusive bullies....I was going to drive up to Bethlehem College and Seminary in Minneapolis (or Twin Cities?) kind of just to pay my respects if not to ask for advice in book-burning and how to engage with, confront or witness to 'wolf-child gay sex rape Asian girls' YAL of the day.  I had all these ideas about Millennial identity, the days I listened to 'Fields of Gold' in 2002 then again in 2015, self-sex-trafficking, self-gaslighting, refusing to be saved from oneself.  As Utada Hikaru said in 2004 'She goes out unprotected / Reality's her best friend' though that's a totally self-contradictory statement from what I can tell and still remember the days, pace 'Fall and Rise' in a way, when the NYPD carried [German SMG] and wore body-armor in the wake of 9.11 at the old Penn Station, and Mexican Catholics in Brooklyn had really clean houses and people weren't all asking for a bit more for theirh neighbor or trying to secularize Christianity pace Kamala Harris and Man's terminologically annoying but super-obvious worldwide mental North Koreanness right now.  John Piper's constantly - as he has to - saying 'Don't Waste Your _.'  I used to say 'saving _ from themselves.'  Are people in America being insane on purpose, like the cops are all out of shape and have no good dogs while schizo ex-Marine war-criminals and b/Black gangsters with AK-47's have souped-up illegal automobiles and civilians all over Shorewood have these huge Alsatians etc...'Most necessary 'tis that we forget / to pay ourselves what to ourselves is debt' ~ from my favorite speech in 'Hamlet' though I guess the world will never work this way at least w/r/t/ 'How Easter Became April Fools.  I wish I had time work on 'Pollen' and 'Clover' but it is 'the condition of fiction' in a time of war or cold war and writing of future history.

My HYYH Theory (Individual MV Analysis/Interpretation)
This is a long post that I’m still working on, so everything will be written under the cut-off. Please remember that this is purely my way of understanding the story that BTS has been working on for the last two years, if you don’t see it the same way- that’s okay because that’s the beauty of intepretation :)
I Need U
(the instability of youth)
The subtitles for HYYH PT 1 were “Anxiety”, “Daydream”, and “Bloom”. Anxiety comes from the uncertain future, daydream comes from wanting to stay in the bliss of youth forever, and bloom comes from it being the point in life where we really become ourselves (our “blooming point”). These are all words that surrounds the meaning of “youth”, our most beautiful moment in life, and thus the story shown through the INU MV.
Youth is the gap between childhood and maturation, innocence and “evil” (we’ll get to that later). The MV is the prelude to BST and YNWA. In here, we see the boys going through their own individual struggles while finding their happiness when they’re together (just like how the YNWA era tells us “Even if it hurts, if you and I are together, I can smile”), we also see Taehyung and his meeting with “evil” (but his full transformation is shown in the WINGS era). So though INU is the first MV in the storyline, it is also the turning point of the plot as well as the blooming of the boys’ characters.
The entirety of the HYYH/WINGS story is based off of three published pieces: Kafka On The Shore, Demian, and The Ones Who Walks Away From Omelas. But the INU MV is specifically based off of Kafka On The Shore and its main theme of fate being inescapable.
“At times like that I always feel an omen calling out to me, like a dark omnipresent pool of water. A dark omnipresent pool of water. It was probably always there, hidden away somewhere. But when the time comes it silently rushes out, chilling every cell in your body. You drown in that cruel flood, gasping for breath.”
“Sometimes fate is like a small sandstorm…this storm is you. Something inside of you. So all you can do is give in to it, step right inside the storm.”
In the novel, Kafka’s fate was an oedipal prophecy foretold by his father where he was to sleep with his lost mother and lost sister and murder him (his father). This can be seen as evil things and most importantly, it is a fate that Kafka can’t escape. He runs away from home and into a remote city but he still ends up fulfilling the prophecy and by the end of the novel, he is finally an adult. Similarly, the fate that BTS is tied to is the loss of innocence and the beginnings of sin a.k.a. “evil” (however the second part specifically pertains to Taehyung). As said before, youth is the gap between childhood and maturation and thus innocence and evil. To move from youth to maturation, you must lose your childhood innocence.
Jin, the oldest member, sees the boys and knows that the innocence of their youth will be lost. But because the boys are also him, they are one in the same, he knows he will be forced to finally mature and become an adult as well. This is why you seem him turning in his bed and why there is an emphasized scene of him opening his eyes. He is “Awake” or in other words, aware of this fate. He puts down six white flowers (the symbol of somebody passing away) because the childlike innocence of the boys has now “died”.
The boys are happy when they are together but separately, they are in pain. The happiness of childhood (represented through them goofing off in restaurants, playing with fireworks, playing on train tracks, driving cars in circles) cannot last forever.
As said before, each boy represents a component of the same body that is Jin. This is shown through the repeated motifs throughout the boys’ individual shots. For example, Hoseok’s symbol are pills but in the HYYH PT 1 concept photos, we see Yoongi on a bed that has pills scattered over the cover as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yoongi’s symbol is fire/a lighter and in the Spring Day MV we see Jungkook with the lighter instead
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jimin’s symbol is an apple and in the Awake short film, we see Jin with an apple too (as well as the other members’ symbols: Yoongi’s piano, Jungkook’s painting, Namjoon’s mirrors, and etc).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This has happened multiple times (in both the Japanese version and the Korean version of the music videos)
But most importantly, in the WINGS VCR, it says:
“In search of a sea nowhere to be found, the boy walks. The boy walks with not one but seven hearts. Seven beats and one stride forward. Altered perspective and one is seven.”
So the six members are Jin, Jin is the six members- they are one body, seven hearts. Similarly, when one part of the body gets infected, eventually the whole body becomes ill if left untreated. If one member falls into the fate of becoming an adult, then the rest has no choice but to do the same and follow the same path. INU shows that Taehyung was the first to do this. Killing his father was the gateway into falling into the inevitable “omnipresent omen”. Not only was it a sin (the first act of wickedness against another) but it also, pays homage to Kafka On The Shore because Kafka had to kill his father to become an adult. Jin realizes what has happened and he cries in the scene directly after the image of Taehyung stabbing his father, which is then ironically proceeded by the scene of the boys once again playing with fireworks, because he knows that his fate has caught up to him- he cannot stay young forever.
Another thing I’d like to talk about is how the ending scene of the INU MV is of the boys looking at the sea and the WINGS VCR saying the words “in search of a sea nowhere to be found.” In Kafka On The Shore, the shore (the place where the sea meets the land) is Kafka’s happy place. His mother and sister abandoned him when he was young but he has one photo of him and his sister on the beach. The photograph is the one memory he has of ever being happy. Similarly, again, the shore to BTS is the one place where the boys can find their joy despite their own individual struggles. It is where they can return to their youth. Which is why you see in Prologue, Jin asking everybody if they want to go back to the shore a.k.a. back to where INU took place. He wants to preserve the time of their/his youth (which is why his symbol is also a camera, he’s constantly saving memories) and prevent them from becoming adults even if their fate is inevitable, even if the sea (an eternal place of happiness) is “nowhere to be found” in reality.

BTS World Tour - Love Yourself
Held on: 25th-26th August 2019
At: Jamsil Olympic Stadium
Poster
Teaser (actually, it shows extracts from The Wings Tour concerts)
List of the concert dates
Post about Love Yourself: Speak Yourself
Tumblr media
As the name implies, the tracklist was focused on songs from the Love Yourself series (83% of the tracklist) but we also got a few old friends:
“Save Me” from 화양연화 Young Forever - which was played to start “I’m Fine” since the two songs work as an ambigram
“I NEED U” and “RUN”, the main tracks of 화양연화 Pt.1 and 화양연화 Pt.2
a medley: “Fun Boyz” (화양연화 Pt.1), “Rise of Bangtan” (O!RUL8,2?), “Fire” (화양연화 Young Forever), “Baepsae” (화양연화 Pt.2), “Dope” (화양연화 Pt.1)
With the exception of “Rise of Bangtan” (probably here because it can be considered as a sibling to “Fun Boyz”), all the songs are from the 화양연화 era. 화양연화 and Love Yourself are deeply connected through the BU so it may be the reason.
With this reasoning, it’s interesting to note that “I NEED U” and “RUN” were performed between the first part 起 Wonder and the second part 承 Her. We can thus assume 화양연화 happens in between and it seems to be confirmed by the Save Me webtoon (Spoiler: we saw events from Euphoria, then from “I NEED U” during April-May YEAR 22 and we know the girls from the Highlight Reel will appear in June YEAR 22).
On a more technical note, the scenic was made by You Jaehun who talked about his work in this video. The concert director also wrote a book about how the concerts came together. He notably mentions that j-hope got the pattern of the the blocks for “Just Dance” on the first try (src).
Lastly, @GetOnSwag found that the vocal line’s shirts for “The Truth Untold” were created by Han Hyunmin. The designer posted about it on Instagram (post, story). Concerning their first outfits, they were made by the shop 청화사 (src)
The first VCR uses elements we’ve already seen before:
“DNA”’s vortex
The curtain at the entrance of Jin’s secret space in WINGS concept. It’s also usually Jin who draws the curtains but here it’s Jung Kook who closes them
The pigment explosion behind j-hope in “Blood, Sweat & Tears” JP version, that’s also in his VCR for The Wings Tour
Tumblr media
起 Wonder VCR
Centered around j-hope and Jung Kook, this VCR announces “Trivia 起: Just Dance” and “Euphoria”.
The boys are together like in Euphoria and they dance happily, following the theme of “Trivia 起: Just Dance”. j-hope and Jung Kook are together in scenes without the others.
There are nods to several elements:
RM wears red high Converse, the model that inspired “Converse High”, which was originally a solo song from RM
Jin and j-hope are seen with a tennis racket. They played together in BTS Comeback Show Highlight Reel, the show for Tear
SUGA pretends to play the piano. He knows how to play and his character in the BU has a strong connection with pianos and music in general
j-hope makes the same gesture as in “Daydream” MV, the main track for his mixtape Hope World. We can also see the cake as a reference to the Highlight Reel, and the birthday party as a reference to the party held at the hospital for Jimin in Euphoria
The drink Jung Kook offers to j-hope is the same as the one he drinks himself in Euphoria
Jung Kook holds a bunch of flowers, reminding one of his scene in the Highlight Reel
The boys took group pictures in the Prologue and in “RUN”
Jimin has the same horn speaker as in “Fire”, with Amplifier written on one side (the A is stylized to be the anarchy symbol)
Jung Kook makes the same gesture as j-hope in the You Never Walk Alone concept
j-hope plays DJ with a gas stove like in “Fire”
Tumblr media
j-hope also blows butterflies on a sleeping Jung Kook. The butterfly dream was a heavy trope in 화양연화.
In the BU, Hoseok and Jungkook are the only two who don't go away and keep in contact during YEAR 20 and 21. They're even together in Jungkook's Note for the 30 September YEAR 20.
承 Her VCR
This VCR introduced “Serendipity” and “Trivia 承: Love”, Jimin’s and RM’s solo songs. Only the two of them appear and while they can interact a bit, they’re not in the same place.
Jimin basically reenacts “Serendipity”, playing with a yellow blanket and surrounded by yellow balls.
If we consider, all of Love Yourself 承 Her content, the closest to RM’s set would be the L version of the concept photo. However there are no identical elements,  the two places just have similar styles. RM also do gestures similar to Jimin’s, like hiding under a blanket or playing with yellow fruits. The second half of his part could be seen as a reference to “DNA” because of the colorful lighting.
At the end of the video, there are 7 yellow fruits near RM.
Tumblr media
轉 Tear and 結 Answer VCRs
Here we have to consider something we learn in the VCRs’ making-of: there was a change of program, SUGA’s solo VCR was canceled, and instead, he replaced RM in the VCR with Jin. The reason for this change is probably what RM explained in his VLive for Answer. He was originally supposed to do the Trivia for 轉 but ended up doing the one for 承, thus exchanging roles with SUGA. As the concert was announced before Tear was released, the VCRs were probably shot before the two rappers made this decision and so to respect the pairs for Answer, they had to also exchange places in the VCRs.
However, we can see a bit of SUGA’s video in the making-of. It’s practically identical to RM’s, supporting this idea they just exchanged places.
Concerning what we actually got now.
The 轉 Tear VCR is a reenactment of “Singularity”, on a slightly different set. There are no more newspapers but the flowers are still here and the colors are similar to the original video.
There are also references to “FAKE LOVE” with the lantern containing a flower (originally a Smeraldo flower but here it’s a rose, which is similar to the ones in the bunches around V) and the sand.
Tumblr media
The last VCR starts with the end of “FAKE LOVE Extended Version” where after putting on a mask, the boys end up under a rock. It then shows Jin and SUGA walking in a completely white set. The subliminal pictures behind them are from “FAKE LOVE”.
During “Epiphany” performance, there are two pianos on the stage, one black, one white. Jin plays the black one. It can show his own duality or the white piano surrounded by flowers could also be a nod to SUGA.
Tumblr media
The Seoul concert was projected in theaters all around the world in January  2019. The concert was cut to fit into a 1h30 format so there were no VCRs nor ments. Here are the official trailer and the posters (x, x).

Thoughts On Hope World's DayDream
Tumblr media
The song is amazing, the lyrics were awesome. Totally dig those references of train to Hogwarts and the hole Alice falls in. The meaning behind it was very common, like who doesn't wanna live into their own fantasy world? Sometimes we visit those world in our dreams when we sleep and we don't wanna wake up. But when we're awake we daydream. The mv was very interesting to watch. There were colors, then darkness too.
After watching it for one time. I felt like it is creeping with symbolism. The painting behind him. The call from Arthur when he was in space. The little door he crawls into. I think there's more to the whole song and the MV than what meets the eye. Just like I think there's more to our Hobi than what we know. Like he said "my character is half and half." That makes think that Because of his stage name "J-Hope" Jung Hoseok divided his personality into half and half. Half is "J-Hope" the happy person everyone loves and half is Jung Hoseok who is concealed away.
