the thing about these guys is that no matter how mundane you make it, they can make anything into a situation. that's just the guys they are. so we put them in a Walmart.

Marn is an employee with a great customer service voice. She's keeping it together in the face of some truly wild statements and requests. One man keeps asking for frootie hooties, a brand of cereal that he insists is real and everyone is just refusing to sell to him, and she's spent twenty minutes trying to tell him that they just don't have it in stock

Lye and Es are having an animated conversation in the clothing area, where she is examining various colorful dresses and he is distractedly picking things off of nearby shelves and putting them back down. The conversation started at how they got kicked out of dayward yve's novelty store and is now about whether stealing should be more or less of a crime than manslaughter, because it's not as bad as killing but it is on purpose. People are trying not to pay attention to them. Eventually they are asked to leave, at which point it is revealed that lye has about two hundred dollars worth of items in his pockets and es has some candles she liked and a new pair of shoes in hers. They are both barred from Walmart.

Duvall hates it here. It's loud, he hates the lights, the aisles make no sense, he can't find anything he's looking for, and people keep coming up to him to ask him where things are. He doesn't even work here. Why do people assume he works here? He's not even wearing any Walmart merchandise. Is that what it's called when you're an employee? Merchandise? Well, it's what it would be called if he wears it, which he never will, because he doesn't work here and never wants to. Have a nice day ma'am.

Pickman is slowly marching her way through the aisles one at a time, peering at her shopping list and holding a tiny shopping basket in one hand. She has to be very careful not to knock the shelves over sometimes. Just trying to get groceries. People are nervously avoiding her. Says "Hey, you" to some poor employee to ask where the milk and cigarettes are. Just grunts at everything else. When she's at the checkout, the guy there asks "Did you find everything you're looking for?", and she just says "No." and leaves

Chine comes out of the bathroom with a live rat in his hand. People scream. The manager finally comes up to him like "Sir, you can't have rats in here." They say "Oh, she's not mine. She was just having trouble opening the door." Gets a big meat on the bone at the deli and nothing else. When he asks how much it costs, they just say it's on the house and try to get him to leave as soon as possible. They go like "Oh, really? Are you sure? I have some money." and sound surprised but pleased, like they're being done a personal favor. The employees insist. He's like "Alright, thanks!" and then asks the rat if she wants anything

The worldbuilding and the thought put into its so cool!! I have a question, though, if you've thought about it- how does livestock / animal products tie into the fact day is gone?

HI POKE THANKS FOR ASKING!! I've got THOUGHTS indeed, buckle in for the info dump!!

SO, yeah, livestock as you might imagine took a huge hit post-calamity. For one, all animals that didn't or weren't able to escape the night would've died en masse. Two, even in the day, the changing environments restricted them even farther, due to temperatures, light levels, and availability of water. And migratory animals, like geese or caribou? Their natural ranges are now mostly impossible to complete.

Now, particularly in terms of livestock! Large grazing livestock like cattle, buffaloes, caribou, etc, now don't have enough grazing land to subsist on, especially because the land that could be used for grazing now needs to go to agriculture. Only small herds of these kinds can be kept.

The Sato tribe of that northernmost mountain range (if you've seen my pinned art of Owl, he's Sato), who settled Northmallow, were historically a semi-nomadic people who herded caribou. But of course, the night came in and wiped out most of that grazing range, and the resulting fallout has trapped large portions of the Northmallow area in basically a permanent winter, restricting it even further. They still keep herds, but way smaller numbers then they could before, and they've had to change the grazing range and move it dayward

In more dayward mountainous areas, like that eastern and southeastern range especially, goats and certain types of sheep are very popular for being hardy and versatile, and because they can be moved more easily around the mountains so they don't exhaust the vegetation. Cattle are very rare, not a very efficient use of space, water, etc. In Morningflower, they keep some pigs but mainly it's flock birds that are very popular! Fun fact, in places with no winter, like Morningflower's situation, insects tend to overpopulate very quickly because they don't die off seasonally, they just keep reproducing. So chickens, ducks, and geese are all kept both as a form of insect control and as a great source of efficient protein!

hello yes. would you believe this was the hardest part. this was fucking impossible. i’m not sure what i ended up with is GOOD, but let’s get into it.

first house isn’t really here. i didn’t include a teacher character, although my hidden lore is that god/the emperor is dayward yve, a guy who starts out just kind of slightly unlikable and then by the end just sucks. he works well in the role except he’s even less likable than john somehow.

second house is pickman and chantilly. there’s very little logic behind this, honestly, other than “pickman is a soldier very determined to do her work.” chantilly is not a soldier, though, or at least not a very good one. this is not the ideal cohort pair of the books, this is one very good cohort soldier and a cohort necromancer who was mostly sent here so she would stop fucking up everything else the cohort tried to do. they’re here because they are both at least loosely tied to trains and the shape and knighthood, and that is the closest alignment to the cohort. (I did consider chine and the child for this one, but I think pickman and chantilly don’t match up very well with the third house, so here we are!)

the third house! chine and the child/“it.” this is because of the dedication to the course, which typically manifests as beautiful natural scenery much like what we find in some areas of earth, the third planet! i believe I’ve told you this, but cleavers like chine can ascend to become “angels.” and that, to me, is similar to lyctors. but out of the two of them, I think the child is more of a necromancer than chine is? we see it engaging in more adaptational growth as it ages, and chine really likes the poleax. this is very much a “we only have our one child heir, and this cav has protected it since birth even though they’re like forty years older” kind of situation. but they’re third house mostly because chine is green grass and sunlight and water, and the third house is that kind of. excess. in a slightly different way.

the fourth house is lye lychen and fendleton not because they’re good fighters — lyke has proven over and over that he is not — but for the mentality of “rushing in” without any prep or thought. the fourth house is like. fuck around and find out. and that’s lyke, to me.

the fifth house! jolyon and duvall! so jolyon is Duvall’s old friend from school who actually died and was reanimated later by train magic, which is why he’s one of just a couple initial deaths listed in the fic. i picked the two of them for this role because of the fifth’s connection to souls and the afterlife; duvall is searching constantly for what counts as personhood, which ties in nicely with the fifth house, and jolyon continues to exist and have an important part in the story after his death, much like abigail. they fit!

the sixth house is marn, because marn is a researcher and a healer. she writes a thesis based on the events of sangfielle and she abandons the greater mission to protect other people from harm, which is very pal to me. and bucho is here because it’s important to me that marn and bucho stick together. they’re a set. i enjoy them.

virtue mondegreen, i think, is a good sort of counter to what the seventh house is in the books? she’s existed past the point of her own death, which quite literally haunts her, and that is the defining point of her arc. the idea of continuing past your expiration date is something both dulcinea and cytherea talk about at great lengths, so it just. made sense. to put virtue and darling here. sometimes your life is defined by the end of it. sometimes that’s your whole culture, even.

es and syn!!! i know that the books make the eighth house really weird assholes. but the way that their powers kind of work — consuming the soul of your cavalier to make magic, draining the color from your environment — seemed like a really damn good translation for how heritrixes work. es doesn’t have a body in sangfielle. she can’t function without syntyche. and that’s true of eighth house necromancers and cavs, in a way it literally isn’t in any other house. they can’t be separated at all or they lose their strongest assets. it works!!

the ninth house is the bone house. dyre ode is the bone guy. gasteau is his little buddy. it was the second one I thought of, after es and syn.

I had a lot on my mind, I had to go to dayward and school started. Now I need to get my shit together, I have gained weight quite a lot but I need this. Jack: There is not a great ritual maneuver, it doesn’t feel like anything changes with the world. It really is Pickman, just thinking about- almost daydreaming, it’s daydreaming. She’s daydreaming about the power and the violence that the Shape has done to people like Dayward Yve.

Austin: You get a look from Chantilly Scathe, eyebrows raised. And she steps up the little, uh, the little, small step-ladder, onto the train, and begins to head deeper into its train cars. You can hear the clink of her cane on the floor, you can feel it because you’re touching the train, somehow it echoes through the metal of the hall. And then there is a brief and quick sound of the air being slashed, and you hear a few guttural moans. About a minute later, she steps back off the train and approaches you. And your eyes note blood dripping from a small slit at the handle of her cane, where it becomes a sheath. And she leans in close to you and, with a mechanical tinge, says.

(as Chantilly) I knew you could ask nicely

And you realize that Miss Chantilly Scathe is the shape train. Uh, she offers you her card, again.

(as Chantilly) In case, in case you need to talk to me again in the future. I think we’ll have lots to chat about.

Jack: Can I, can we shake hands?

Austin: Oh yeah, and you feel her cold flesh on yours, the metal of her body.

Jack: Oh she’s in co- she’s a clown too, right? Or she’s in circus gear, right? Cause the-

Austin [overlapping]: She’s in ringmaster attire. I think she even says to you-

Austiin: I know, she has to go and run the circus momentarily. [laughs] The, like, the tent- she has a big top close to the train, close enough that she can maintain her connection to the train, or to the body of the train. I mean she is the train, right. She just can’t get too far from it cause it’s her. I think she says like:
