my dean keeps his scar from castiel gripping him and raising him from hell. it does grow a little more faint and silvery over time as scars do but i love the idea of it sticking around. this is on the LEFT FOREARM fading just up over the elbow area. a few inches into his bicep about a finger or two's width under the scar. and then the bottom right image is his BACK. the faint printings surrounding the backpiece and wrapping around his ribs are enochian words that cas chose. wards. prayer markings, etc.

HEADCANON / * childhood , tattoo , shift on views. CANON INSP. S1EP05 , Bloody Mary -- Dean’s bloody eyes reveal there is a lot more , something darker , to his  early days in hunting that no one else knows about.

     Four years ,  Dean has already been exposed to the world of supernatural --- which left him scarred since the following weeks turned to months had the young child completely silent and dissociative.  Then , during his late five to six years ,  Dean began his training when his father decided that if his older son is able to understand and empathize with what Dad has been doing ,  then he is old enough to hone that  “  killer instinct ”  and start learning how to deal with monsters out of nightmares.  It was only a year or two after Dean regains his voice and begins to communicate again due to Bobby Singer’s help in exposing Dean to contact therapy ,  albeit subtle and unknown to the boy.  The only times that he ever felt truly as a child is when he’s with Bobby ,  teaching him to play catch like normal kids do instead of firing a rifle just like his Dad asked Bobby to.

     Due to legal concerns about minors in almost all States and hunters trying to keep low profiles ,  Dean only received his Anti - Possession tattoo on his left chest as soon as he’s fourteen.  It was Bobby who created the consented letters and looked after him throughout the process since his Dad never really paid attention to the extra details because it was pointless and he’s too busy ;  “  just do whatever means to get it done and over ,  Dean ”. 

     He might have learned how to kill monsters out of hate ,  but Dean has soft heart for reasonable exceptions such as casualties ,  witnesses ,  etc.  However ,  he learned it the hard way repeatedly to look away most of the time because that’s what Dad expects him to do ;  because that’s what hunting is all about.

      ------ No need to be sentimental about it ,  boy !  Shoot to kill ,  it’s that damn easy !

     What makes the burden easy on his conscience is drowning himself in alcohol to forget and indulge in playful distractions making up for that desire to connect ;  well , he learned how to fool himself ,  too.

John did love his sons, and he had good intentions. But it's canon that he neglected them, let them (at least Dean) go hungry, and forced Dean to take on adult duties and raise Sam too young, all because he was more focused on revenge than being a father. Neither boys would be half as much of a mess now if he'd done his damn job as a parent.

He didn’t let anybody go hungry: when he left them alone, they did have food or money to buy food, as proven by the fact that in Something Wicked Dean literally threw away a whole plate of pasta (or whatever it was) because Sam wanted Lucky Charms instead. If he had been starving, he would have eaten it instead of throwing it away.

Their situation was less than ideal, John himself admitted as much (and expressed his desire for Sam and Dean to have a normal life), and Dean is one of those unfortunate souls who grew up a little too fast, because he was an older sibling with a single parent. This means baby-sitting, this means cooking, this means having to “be the man of the house” when Dad is away. It’s common in families with a single working parent (or two working parents) who can’t afford a baby-sitter because they are not middle class.

Dean also offered emotional support both to John and Sam, because it’s in his nature (he was doing show in that flashback in Heaven, he saw that his mother was upset and even as a four year old he reached out and tried to comfort her), and John let him, because he needed the help. It was unfair to Dean, and John apologized for it, it surely plays a part in some of Dean’s issues, but there is not ONE parent on Earth who hasn’t done some wrong by their kid. Not one. It doesn’t make him a monster, it doesn’t mean that he didn’t do his job as a parent. In Dean’s own words: “He did a hell of a lot more good than he did bad.”

John wasn’t more focused on revenge than being a father, otherwise Sam and Dean wouldn’t be alive, because a traumatized four year old can’t take care of himself and his six months old brother. This means that John HAD to tend to them. Not to mention that he proved that his sons were more important than revenge when he gave up the Colt AND the chance to kill Azazel by giving his soul to save Dean instead.

John didn’t create the circumstances of Sam and Dean’s childhood, Azazel did. John was handed a big pile of crap, he watched his world turn upside down as he found out that MONSTERS were real and that his family was a target and he was left to learn a) how to deal with this new reality, b) how to keep not only himself but his sons alive through all that. He ended up training them “as soldiers” to do that, he ended up moving them around to not risk their safety, and he made tons of mistakes along the way. It doesn’t mean that he was a monster who did everything wrong, it doesn’t mean that he’s THE reason why Sam and Dean are not well-adjusted. John isn’t to blame if Sam and Dean didn’t have a normal childhood, he wasn’t the one who chose this for them: he was stuck between a rock and a hard place. “Do you want your kids to live but never have a normal life or do you want to ignore that you will probably have to watch them die like your wife for the illusion of a peaceful reality?” Yeah, both options sound GREAT.

Not to mention that the biggest traumas in Sam and Dean’s life came long after John was dead and gone.

(You can give your interpretation of the text, you can project your feelings, you can headcanon John as the worst abusive monster ever or as The Reason of all his sons’ problems, but that’s your headcanon and your interpretation of a text that DIDN’T show John as an irredeemable abusive monster, but rather as a human being in a grey area, who did good and did bad, who tried to do his best with what he was given and didn’t always succeed, who sometimes got angry and lashed out, etc. - not unlike his sons, actually -. 

Some of the things that you said were canon aren’t, but honestly? I don’t care, you can build your headcanon on pieces of canon and ignore others, you can give a big interpretation to the text that according to you is more realistic than what the show gave us, it’s all fine, live the fandom however you like. You are entitled to your personal enjoyement - or hate - of the character, but it’d be really nice if you could avoid adding said interpretation to a John positive post in an attempt to educate us all on how wrong it is that we like John. Mine was a John-positive gifset that stated that John a) loved his sons, b) would kill for them, c) would die for them. There was no need to come here and let us know that “YES, he loved them BUT-!”. It’s rude.)

Random headcanon time! (Sexy edition bc Cas is curious)

When did Dean lose his virginity? To whom? Was it something special? Did he become a womanizer right after, or did that take some time to develop?

dean lost his virginity leaving the boy's home. he was sixteen and a barfly at a local place during a stop for a hunt a few months into him being back with john and sam was the one who introduced him what would lead him down that road of discovery. dean was there at the dive, winning money on cards while sammy was being spoiled with a good dinner from an off-duty bartender that took an instant liking to the boys and turned a blind eye to dean being where he wasn't supposed to be.

it was a small town. no one really cared. which is why the killings at the truck stop about twenty miles down the road were going unnoticed in their patterns throughout the years. john thought it was possible demon activity. turns out? vengeful spirit with a really, really gnarly tactic or two along the way. took his dad three days to get to it. nasty bugger. i digress..

sam had a babysitter that was sweet as could be. for free. and dean was two beers in cause the guys he was beating thought they could get him drunk pretty easy. get their money back. turns out? another beer later, dean was still sober and took most of their paychecks they were willing to 'donate to the cause' as dean put it.

he was on his way out the door. stopped at the bar to get some molasses cookies to take to sam since the place boasted it had the best ones in the county (so said the sign) when she saddled up beside him. asked him what he was doing there. how he managed to win all that money. and followed him outside.

she invited him to her car for a hit or two off a joint she had. dean, wanting to look like the bad ass he was projecting himself to be, went with her. choked down a couple of hits because he'd only done that stuff a few times before. he was buzzed when she kissed him. scrambled up his brain with how good she was at it. nothing like he girls he'd kissed before. she tasted like cheap whiskey. pot. and a breath mint.

half an hour later? dean was staggering back into the room with an ear to ear grin that the bartender thought was a mix of the alcohol and pot she smelled on him. sammy had no idea. just that dean was stinky and they needed to wash his clothes. kelly, the bartender, helped them with that in a washer inside the bar that was used for towels and whatever else. she 86'd the local from the bar the next night. unknown to dean. because his dad was bad a day later and they were gone.

dean never got the woman's name. if he did? he doesn't remember it. maybe it was bonnie or something close to that. it was nothing special. no romance. no repeat. he doesn't even know how old she was. but she had to be at least ten years or more older than him. he can remember her face. she was pretty in a way that small town women who belly up to the bar when their husbands are out of town look. he's got no clue if she was married or not. but he remembers her looking the type.

far as womanizing, CAS? that evolved/worsened over time. once dean realized that a normal life wasn't ever gonna be in the cards for him. or. rather. had it reinforced it'd never be? he kinda gave up on that whole finding someone thing and when the world got too much? s.ex was an easy escape. from town to town. distanced partner to distanced partner. with a brief time or two where he thought he might have the chance to have something knowing deep down he wouldn't? growing up the way he did. around the people he did. the projections he had? about himself. and life, how love worked for people like him and women/relationships in general? the mindset of just another piece of tail was way more simple, more fun, and a hell of a lot less heartache for the ones he did care about but knew he wouldn't ever be able to keep. he won't admit to half of that. chalks it up with a grin and a shrug. sometimes he wishes his first time mighta meant more than what it did. but! it is what it is. as he'd say.

it's the blood he tasted as it rolled down the back of his throat. the way he could feel his skin giving as it was torn to shreds under claws that only he could see. snagging and then spreading open with a painful fire that gurgled in his chest and throat. how he felt them chewing into him. tearing pieces away as his brother screamed. how no matter what way he tried to turn as the blood pooled out of him, only teeth and claws and PAIN were there waiting.

his legs. thighs. his shoulder. stomach. chest. back. neck. teeth and more teeth. gnashing pearly white until they were coated in red with pieces of him stuck between them that he watched them lick away before they started all over again. how if he batted and clawed until the muscles in his arms were too torn to let him fight back anymore. none of it mattered. they didn't stop. they wouldn't stop. he could beg and scream (his throat wouldn't let him) and all of his pain. all of his agony. and terror? only seemed to spurn on their want to devour him. until he was nothing. until he stopped breathing.

dean wasn't sure if it was the trauma everywhere else. or if they'd gotten so deep that his ribcage was torn open and he no longer had them. but, quicker than his heart--imagine that--his fragile heart outlasted his LUNGS. then the pain stopped. but he could feel them continuing to sate their hunger for him. pitch black swelled over his eyes. filled up his ears.

NOTHING WAS THERE WAITING FOR HIM. endless nothing. only falling, falling, falling. THEN HELL WAS WHERE THEY DELIVERED HIM. whole and clean and then it began all over again. and over again. and over again. while the torture that truly hadn't started yet was being prepared. they delivered him to that, too.

they were brought back more than once. those hounds with his blood on their breath, barking sounds that sounded like his death. gutteral noises. consuming wet that slathered itself into his limbs with cold fear so overwhelming it froze him in place each time. if something was there to hear his screams--it didn't listen. didn't give him mercy. he preferred anything other than their teeth. their vicious mouths. hell was in their eyes. in their howls of delight as they tore into him like a toy. all stitched back up just for them to destroy again.

dean still has nightmares about them. on his worst nights, he won't sleep until exhaustion makes him pass out. dean is terrified of them for a reason. he's been at their mercy and he knows there is none. only drooling teeth and claws that tear and rip at will. to say there is PTSD from hell and what was done to him there--that's a book and a half i could get into. but after suffering at the true brunt of hellhound attacks while he was alive and in hell? it's pretty much a given that they are a monster that truly incites fear into dean's bones. because he knows what they are capable of and exactly what it feels like to be powerless against them and suffer under their brute force.

to be safe

no matter where you are, you can still feel the foundations of this building slowly crumbling apart. it's unstable, you feel unsafe. it'd feel better if you were somewhere soft, somewhere closed off, and safe, but you're stuck somewhere with falling debris, some sharp and small, some blunt and large. there's gaps in places, and it feels like everything is looking in. you can't stand to look out. you want to look away, for someone to help maybe, and take you away. or maybe, for something to go away, and for you to be able to go back to feeling secure. maybe you've never felt secure, and lately, it's tiring. you want the house to fall apart faster, or stop entirely, so you can make it to safety. there's a way to save yourself.
