The Observer lists Hysteria as one of August’s “most anticipated” debuts
What lovely news! Juliet Helmke, writing for the Observer, calls Jessica Gross’ “psychological” and “comedic” debut, Hysteria, one of the “5 Most Anticipated” books of August — we can’t help but agree.

This lush but harsh work of lyrical autofiction left me devestated and awestruck by the power of Ocean Vuong’s writing. - Chris . . . “Once, at a writing conference, a white man asked me if destruction was necessary for art. His question was genuine. He leaned forward, his blue gaze twitching under his cap stitched gold with ‘Nam Vet 4 Life, the oxygen tank connected to his nose hissing beside him. I regarded him the way I do every white veteran of that war, thinking he could be my grandfather, and I said no. ‘No sir, destruction is not necessary for art.’ I said that, not because I was certain, but because I thought my saying it would help me believe it.” . . #citylightsnc #staffpicks #indiebookstore #indienext #sylva #downtownsylva #shoplocal #debutfiction #poets #artanddestruction (at City Lights Bookstore) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzae-bmJvuy/?igshid=2katrxsym5c

I thoroughly enjoyed Izumi Suzuki’s irrelavent sci-fi cyberpunk shorts. Although a few of them were a little bland, the concept as a whole was incredibly fun. Suzuki plays on traditional sexuality, often mixing the roles and creating relationships that feel unbalanced compared to other science-fiction pieces. It’s also the unique selling-point of Terminal Boredom – a penchant for the unexpected. . The first English-language publication of the work of Izumi Suzuki, a legend of Japanese science fiction and a countercultural icon. . Izumi Suzuki was born in 1949. After dropping out of high school, she worked in a factory before finding success and infamy as a model and actress. Her acting credits include both pink films and classics of 1970s Japanese cinema. When the father of her children, jazz musician Kaoru Abe, died of an overdose, Suzuki’s creative output went into hyperdrive, and she began producing irreverent and punky short fiction, novels and essays. . You can find the full review in my bio. Terminal Boredom s now available from @versobooks and all good booksellers. . . . #IzumiSuzuki #TerminalBoredom #Verso #Japanese #JapaneseLiterature #SciFi #Sciencefiction #Cyberpunk #NobuyoshiAraki #bookstagram #bookreview #books #booklover #bibliophile #womenintranslation #readtheworld #fictionintranslation #translatedbooks #readersofig #translatedlit #bookreviewers #debutfiction #translated #bookaesthetics #bookrecommendation #bookstagramuk #sciencefictionbooks #scifiworld #futurism #dystopia (at Christleton Duck Pond) https://www.instagram.com/p/COyTSLHrQ9v/?igshid=h20c4kb5z7bp

An Alternative Author Interview: TCL’s Countdown Questions. This week I’m featuring author Andrea Bobotis.
Andrea Bobotis’ debut novel “The Last List of Miss Judith Kratt” just blew me away, I loved it THAT much (and as of this writing, it is still my favorite book of 2019)! I’m now following (hopefully not to the level of stalking) her across social media and I really hope that this book…

It’s another rainy day where I live so I’m using it as an excuse to ignore all my responsibilities and just read all day. A clean house is highly overrated 😂 . ☔️ . I was recently sent a copy of A MATTER OF CHANCE by @juliemaloneywra courtesy of @jkscommunications This debut novel sounds the perfect book to binge-read on a rainy day! . ☔️ . Goodreads blurb: . When eight-year-old Vinni Stewart disappears from a Jersey shore town, Maddy, her distraught single mother, begins a desperate search for her daughter. Maddy’s five-year journey leads her to a bakery in Brooklyn, where she stumbles upon something terrifying. Ultimately, her artist neighbor Evelyn reconnects Maddy to her passion for painting and guides her to a life transformed through art. Detective John D’Orfini sees more than a kidnapping in the plot-thickening twists of chance surrounding Vinni’s disappearance, but his warnings to stay away from the investigation do not deter Maddy, even when her search puts her in danger. When the Russian Mafia warns her to stop sniffing into their business, Maddy must make a choice whether to save one child―even if it might jeopardize saving her own. . ☔️ . #amatterofchance #juliemaloney #shewritespress #debutfiction #mondaymood #rainymonday #jennblogsbooks #booksandflowers #nerdypostbookmarks #stackedbooks #bookstagrammer #fortheloveofreading #readallthebooks #peacelovebooks #jkscommunications https://www.instagram.com/p/Bn1egnplvwX/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ssyaum6am4zd
