Etymology nonnie here!
I love the parenthood mechanics in IFs too. Like, I don't care about having children in real life, at least not enough to seriously consider it. But I love to play as a parent in IFs. Yet, the mechanic is so rare.
Thicker than is one of my favorite examples of it, because the way it's used involve such emotional punches I'm not sure I'll ever recover. That said, as much as I love how the mechanic is used in that game, I do recognize it doesn't have a major role compared to other IFs that include it.
Honestly, for the Roman brothel IF idea, it wouldn't shock me much. I don't remember the name of the project, but I found an IF where MC is a prostitute who adopts a kid the first day of their job. And the IF will focus in part in raising that kid.
I don't know precisely why I love the parenthood mechanic so much. But I do. I just know I do.
So much so, my IF WIP includes it. I don't want to say much about it since this blog is not about my writing, but I thought it was relevant to point out.
I did think for a bit about how WWC could work if it included the mechanic... And honestly, unless you went for: MC has a one night stand and pregnancy ensues/MC is left to take care of a kid and decided to adopt them; I don't see it ever working based on how the story is going. Of course, even though those scenarios are the only way I could see it happening (and both would happen in the space between seasons or in season 2), I do recognize it would be a terrible choice narratively. MC is not in a position to be parenting anyone yet. So, hypothetically, the only way I could see parenting fitting into the storyline would be on a potential season 3 (for which the two ways of acquiring a child I mentioned earlier become irrelevant, as those were proposed by me only based on what we know of the story so far and its future).
Yeah, I think an hypothetical season 3 would be the only way to actually include parenthood into WWC. And yet, I am not convinced. The Crown family is already more than interesting enough to be able to justify the addition on one or more babies. There are way too many issues already, it would be cruel to being another kid when everyone is in such a bad psychological state.
There is always the chance to fantasize about MC and the RO's having kids. Or, if one has the will and puts the necessary effort, write a fanfic about it.
I’ve already been asked about mc having children and I’ve said that’s not something I’m interested in for them 😭
Plus given that the time jump is between 1-3 mc is still so young, I don’t want to make them a parent at 22. Especially when they’ve just started to live their life. It doesn’t fit in the story I want to make and doesn’t make sense for the plot also if mc has a penis I would need to include a whole ass character as the other parent and I don’t want to waste time doing that
Mc gets a taste of freedom and immediately gets pregnant? Nahhhh to me it would feel like punishing mc for their promiscuity when I want them to feel liberated in their choice to perhaps explore that aspect of themself so no kids for mc as far as I write them. That’s why is say that children in WWC are for your headcanons and whatever fanfics y’all write 😌

Whouffle Week 2021 - Day 5
I’m a lurker on a Discord server that is having an open fan event to celebrate the Doctor and Clara Oswald. Despite not actually interacting for a while (long story), I decided to throw my hat into the creative ring and write along with the prompts!
1153 words; this made me sad; fck Nardole I hate Nardole this is a Nardole Un-Appreciation Blog but whatever he’s a useful plot device when you need someone who is more insufferable and less likeable than the Doctor
Prompt Five: Hypnosis/Letter
It was an average day as the Doctor milled about, attempting to stimulate his mind despite the tedium involved with staying in Bristol. Sure, it was an engaging enough town for a normal human, possibly even some extraterrestrials, but not him. There were days when all he could do to relieve the pressure was take a stroll inside the TARDIS, visiting all the rooms he could as he whiled away the spare hours, reminding himself of what was waiting.
It was 1973 and he was hiding during a particularly restless summer. With no classes, there was little he could do to engage his varying brain levels except for wandering, making plans, making lists of the places he wanted to go and the people he wanted to see soon as he was rid of his freely-acquired burden.
Although Nardole had said something about making sure to get back before… something… the Doctor allowed himself to wander the library with ease, not caring about what time it was or when he needed to be back. The ship knew what sort of fluctuations to alert him of, and therefore he took his time. He wandered, looking at the varying books and periodicals that stuffed the shelves with a sense of absentmindedness that he hadn’t experienced in a long, long while. It could almost have been considered liberating if it wasn’t for the fact he was unsure of why he was there.
Eventually, the Doctor came upon a rather worn copy of Jane Eyre, with well-thumbed pages that were frayed and soft along the edges. He flipped through it, recalling the story: a young woman of modest circumstance becomes the tutor for a titled man’s ward. She and the lord fall in love, and their love prevails in the end despite hardships and separation. He could not recall having ever read the book properly, let alone the specific copy in question, and yet a folded piece of paper fell out from between the pages. He glanced about, stared at the paper, and tucked the book under his arm before picking it up and reading the contents.
‘Doctor,’ it read.
‘How long has it been? I do not blame you—this was hidden on purpose—but I’m certain it has been more than either of us would want to admit.’
He paused. Who was this? Sarah Jane? Romana? Oh… was it Ace…? No, Ace would have said “Professor”, so that ruled her out. He squinted at the handwriting—he didn’t know whose it was despite recognizing it, so Romana was still an option. The paper was old, that part was for certain, but in the TARDIS… things were often difficult to judge.
‘Who are you with now? I hope they are treating you well. You better be treating them well in turn—don’t make me haunt you for that, of all things. Make my coming back from wherever I went to worth the while. I don’t even know how I’m going to go, why I’ll go, let alone if it’ll be anyone’s fault. It’d probably be the Time Lords’ fault—you said they were likely to gambit a plan away from you, even in death, so who’s to say that it’s not an interdimensional game of cat-and-mouse?’
He considered that for a moment—plenty of former travelling companions knew how pompous and self-important the Time Lords as a whole were, and yet the author of this particular letter seemed very clued-in. Yeah… Romana was working her way up there. Possibly Tegan, for that matter… or Turlough, the little shit… no… too interpersonal to entirely be him given what they went through. Peri…? He still wasn’t entirely certain. River just seemed like too obvious a guess...
‘Just remember to work on your manners, to run fast, to be kind, and be the Doctor that you were always meant to be.’
By now he had found himself sitting on the couch, reclining lazily as he studied the words before him. He plucked an apple from the fruit bowl sitting on a nearby table and munched it. Usually he was much more precise than this, knowing exactly what was going on from the moment he began reading. Then again, there was something nagging at the back of his brain, tickling all levels of his conscious thought at once.
What was it about this letter that was so… so… impossible…?
“There you are,” Nardole scolded. The Doctor moved only his eyes in order to glare at the cyborg on the other side of the sitting area, who was coming at him with all the offense and nerve of a rural housewife. “I’ve been wondering where you’ve been.”
“Just wandering, nothing more,” he defended idly, attempting to go back to the letter.
“You aren’t thinking about leaving, are you?”
“How can I with you breathing down my neck?”
“Think you can pull a fast one on me?”
“I know I can choose a fast one on you, so don’t tempt me,” the Doctor said. He tried extra-hard to stare at the letter now, only for it to be ripped from his hands by Nardole.
“Who wrote this?” he frowned. “I know it wasn’t your wife.”
“Will you please stop?!” The Doctor grabbed the paper back and shoved it in the book, holding the entire thing in the crook of his arm. “I’m a widow, alright? And widows don’t need to have their intergalactic egg-secretary to remind them of that fact! Now if you find me sulking, then let me sulk in peace!”
“...sure it’s not just a touch of the times?”
“Sod off.”
After having dipped his toes in the strongest language he had used within the last decade, the Doctor stormed out of the room and found the place that Nardole was unable to find. Few others than him knew where it was, as it were, and he knew it was a sanctuary when it was needed most. He flopped down on the bed and looked at the letter again, using the wan light from the sidetable to look at the impossible—yet so familiar—words etched across the page.
Examining the letter, tears began to well in the Time Lord’s eyes as he laid there, reading the words over and over and over again. He had most recently spent his days with River, that had been true, but she wasn’t the one he was mourning… heck, he was her widow the day they met...
...it was whomever it was that wrote the letter… and the thought that he could not remember them or who they were or where they had been sliced through his hearts swiftly, firmly, rendering his two organs into four.
That was it, he decided. It was time to investigate the mysterious author and all their intentions. Soon as he was free from his duty, he would look, and there was nothing that was going to stop him.

Sorting Daenerys Targaryen and Jorah Mormont with the sortinghatchats system (GoT verse)
I didn’t want to write this post before I finished my Killing Eve sortings (basically Carolyn and Konstantin), but I’m stuck with them, so I decided to revisit an old fandom instead with a new approach. My take here is possibly an outsider’s take, given that I haven’t interacted with this fandom for a while, save for a few close friends I made in it. Now, bear in mind this sorting system IS NOT the original HP system, it is simply based on it. It sorts you into two houses. Your primary is you WHY, your reason to be who you are, what you believe in. Your secondary is your HOW, the way you act and approach life. Below is a little tl;dr of what each of them are (I’m using the animal terminology that’s being used in many blogs, by the way. If you know the houses, you know what each animal is supposed to represent).
Lion primaries are intuitive and guided by their moral compass, which is very strong (doesn’t mean what they believe in is in fact good or correct) and Lion secondaries are the people who charge straight at something, regardless of whether they will come out of it unscathed or not.
Snake primaries value people. Not any person, their people. They will go to hell and earth for their people to be safe and happy, which can get kind of self destructive. Snake secondaries improvise much like Lion secondaries, but they tend to adapt to situation and shapeshift their way out of problems.
Bird primaries also value right and wrong like Lion primaries, but they build their systems with external information and observation, not from their gut feelings. That means Bird primaries change a lot with time, because their ‘rights’ and ‘wrongs’ change. Bird secondaries collect. Skills, tools, random knowledge, they delve deep and acquire as much of them as they can, not because things are useful, but because it’s fun.
Finally, Badger primaries are also people-persons, but their communities are much broader than a Snake primary’s. They value people, tradition, cultures and so (but not every Badger sees everyone as people, so there’s that). Badger secondaries are the hardworking types in the sense that they cultivate things, they invest in them and even become them.
You can develop models of each house according to what you find useful or what society has instilled in you, but when push come to shove, the models aren’t the real you. All of these houses can burn, meaning their essence is somehow scared away from them due to trauma, depression, societal pressures, etc. That means a Lion stops trusting their instincts, a Snake no longer feels like they’re able to protect their people or their people are better off without them, a Bird loses faith in their systems and a Badger closes themselves off from their communities and adopts a smaller circle of people. Burnt houses can look a lot like each other. For more info, check out the tags.
Daenerys
Double Lion, no doubt (for most of the show). Dany knows what’s right, she feels it in her bones. She never tries to rationalise her decisions and she won’t usually budge, even if she is presented with a more rational plan. None of her advisors have really convinced her to do anything, they might have pushed her to do what they wanted, but if she had her way, Daenerys would only ever listen to her own heart. She needs people around her to help her not make impulsive, brash decisions(because of her Lion secondary that I will get into), but she definitely doesn’t need - and doesn’t want - a moral compass, hers works just fine. She was burned as hell in the first episodes of the first season, mostly because of Viserys’ horrible influence, because he had robbed her of a purpose, of her truth. Drogo also stifles her primary and secondary for a while, but he eventually gives her some space to be herself. When she unburns, she unburns fast. ‘Not a Queen, a Khaleesi’ is pretty much Day gong ‘yeah, I can do things my way, I can be my own person with my own values and my own self.’ I think from there on, her quest to liberate 1) take back the Iron Throne 2) liberate Slaver’s Bay and ‘Break the Wheel’ just show how much she is focused on a big quest that is not explained by reason, by her need to form a community or by the influence of someone in her life. She does it because that’s the Right Thing ™ to do, and that’s Lion primary in a nutshell. Another thing that points towards Lion primary to me is how she just won’t take criticism and specially betrayal well (not that anyone does, but Dany is particularly unforgiving most of the time). Lion primaries are particularly shaken when someone they admire doesn’t have the same moral standards as they do, because deep down they like to think they know what’s ‘good’ and ‘true’ (oops my Snake primary who doesn’t really get Lions is showing), so if you don’t follow them and their beliefs, you must be doing something wrong. This is why Dany is so fucking pissed at Jorah when she finds out he betrayed her. She is also devastated true, and she misses him, but her ideals and her ‘truth’ stop her from seeing things from his side ad from forgiving him until he has proven himself worthy. Her reaction to betrayals tie in to the fact that she is a MASSIVE Lion secondary. She headbutts her way into things and her liberal use of Dracarys is proof of that. That’s not to say she doesn’t think or plan or listen to her advisors, but when push comes to shove, homegirl ACTS. Fuck the consequences, I have three dragons, fucking try me. Don’t tell me that climbing on Drogon in the fighting pits and burning the Khals were calculated decisions. Burning the Lannister army wasn’t a calculated decision. She leaves the planning to the people around her. This is something I struggle with regarding Lions, but I have to admit they are much more prone to seizing opportunities that us Bird secondaries (because I do have a Snake model but it is utter shit).
Now, in seasons 7 and 8, she starts burning again. She gets to Westeros, where people aren’t flocking to her side like they did in Essos. Daenerys lets herself be swayed by Jon’s pretty little speeches that sound very Lion, sound very true to Daenerys, but guess what? She is fucking betrayed by everyone. The people she loved are killed, her children are killed (and the whole ‘I will take what is mine’ thing indicates that she might have a Snaky primary model, after all, she does some things because of what she claimed as hers, be it people or the Throne), she is left absolutely alone, so she burns, she loses faith in herself, starts doubting her actions and her instincts and no one is there to help her unburn safely, so the way she does it is destructive, as it often is with Lion primaries who don’t have guidance in order to regain their trust  their instincts and their selves. To me, the KL incidence is her primary going ‘You fucking left me behind, you fuckers, now you are going to see that I was right and fuck the consequences’. Her primary takes a turn for the worse with the help of an impulsive secondary and she ends doing anything to reach her end goal, similar to Albus Dumbledore and his disregard for human life as long as Voldemort being defeated is concerned.
Jorah
I have no doubts whatsoever that Jorah is a Snake primary. I know the fandom likes to sort him into Hufflepuff when using the traditional sorting system and while there’s no doubts he is a loyalist to the bone, Jorah’s loyalties are much narrower than a Badger primary’s would be. Before he meets Daenerys, he wants to go home and make up with his family, because they are the ones who matter. Not his reputation, not the North, not Bear Islad itself, the Mormont House. Before that still, he does literally anything to keep Lynesse happy, including doing things that are against the law. This utter devotion to certain people are what makes him a Snake primery to me, a paricularly self destructive one. He starts worrying about the fact that he berayed Daenerys when he ‘adopts’ her into his circles and more so when she goes from being in his outermost circles to being the one person his Snake primary is attached to. Daeerys is everything to Jorah. Does he persoally care about freeing slaves or generally following her morals? No, he does it because it is importat to her and he wants her to see he is worthy of her attention (I, another Snek, still don’t kow if I like Florence + The Machine so damn much because I liked a girl who was into FATM or if my Bird secondary saw her taste for FATM and went ‘OMG ME TOO LETS TALK ABOUT THAT’ and the primary just said ‘huh, that’s legit. We’ll worship her from now on’, so yeah, us Snakes do that. On a side note, I never worked up the courage to ask her out, though). That’s why he goes batshit when she banishes him. He doesn’t burn, which means his primary is so strong it wasn’t fazed by being ast out of her circles; no, he is hell bent on getting back into her good graces and if he has to sacrifice his life fr that, so be it.
Now, when it comes to secondary, I’d say Jorah’s a Lion secondary too, even though he has a lot of models he picked up with time. Models are useful, models get you out of bad situations, but they’re not who you really are. Jorah wans to be a Bird secondary when he’s around Daenerys, he wants to be the careful planner who looks ahead and ensures she is successful and he also needs a Snake secondary model, because his life demands that he twists and turns himself to fit different situations, but deep inside he is a Lion. His most honest moments are the moments when he just does it, no thoughts head empty. Did he have a solid plans when he kidnapped Tyrion? Fuck no! Did he truly know what he was doing when he decided to fight in the pits? Fuck no! Did he think before he charged at the wights and saved Daenerys in Winterfell? Fuck no! His head was probably just going ‘my Daenerys is in danger let’s punch first and see what happens later’. He’s not like Littlefinger, who plans everything ad is so fast at analysing and changing plans he looks like a Snake. His models make him seem like the opposite of Dany, like a Bird to a Lion, brains while she is brawn, but when she is in danger, Jorah charges.
What the Jorleesi shippers do is take Dany’s Lion primary that is so focused on a quest and show her that she can also include people in her big aspirations. The gut feeling that is so characteristic of Lions is already inside her, all she would need is to put it into words, which isn’t necessarily the strongest suits of many Lions (that’s a Bird thing). Since most of their dynamics inevitably lies on Jorah’s models regulating Dany’s secondary, there’s not much point in ‘taming her Lion’. Jorah stays the same. The fandom looooves his Snake/Lion, specially since us Snakes tend to be too hard on ourselves. A self-loathing Snake who is also a stupid brave Lion secondary? Yes. They are both stupid brave. Also just stupid. Just talk, you two, for fuck’s sake. Get over your Lion, Daenerys, and talk to him, his Snake won’t allow him to bother you too much.

BALLS, CERTAINLY NOT AT ANY COST
SardarSohan Singh and his family had shifted to Chandigarh. Suddenly, I had lost two close friends. Loss of company of Goga hurt me because suddenly my daredevilry and my pranks had come to a standstill because one needs a partner in such escapades. Anyone who has read the adventure blog will vouch for it. We didn’t need to read the books to plan our adventures but there’s no fun in them unless you have a partner if not many. Since Pali was elder to us and as I have said that he was different, he wasn’t our partner but his resourcefulness was important to our plans. He never questioned us why we needed what we asked him to get because he understood that the children have their needs and intrinsically they don’t like to discuss their projects or divulge the details to others who are not a party to their plans. That is because it entails a risk of a secret becoming an ‘open secret’ and parents have sharp ears and prying eyes. In addition to that, there are spies in the shapes of innocuous-looking young kids who you think have no interest in your games. Maybe, they are not interested in your games but they are the spies- real ears and the eyes of the parents. And if you think that you can buy their silence or their favour by bribing them with marbles, rare empties of cigarette packs, or even priceless pictures of the cricketers, then you are badly mistaken because they are the future voters and they are as shrewd as they come. They will take the bribe and still do what they set their mind upon. Though they also have many uses, like they can be ordered to do your bidding. They can be scolded for being sloppy and they serve as the best assistants when you need extra hands for executing an important task that requires extra hands. But they cannot be sent as emissaries to other peoples’ homes. Parents are as wary of it as they were when we were growing up although the world that we grew up in wasn’t as depraved as it is now. Still, it wasn’t as virtuous either, but then there were demons even the times of Lord Rama and Krishna too. Parents didn’t like their children to go to the homes of the people not know to them and going to the homes of the strangers or talking to them was prohibited.
I wasn’t gifted like Pali in devising methods for acquiring balls nor was I as daring, but after his family left Shimla the tough task of arranging the balls fell upon me because I was the Captain of the Mohalla team and as they say, the show must go on, the game couldn’t be given up. We thought of pooling our pocket money but “Takkas” that we got as daily allowance didn’t add up to much even if the contributions were continued for months. I decided to ask the team members to get donations from their parents like the school authorities would ask us to get from them whenever floods or famine, hit some part of the country.
We knew how they grumbled, winced, and protested but they paid. So, I lectured to my teammates,
“Parents are habituated to throwing tantrums. ”Abusing, cursing, scolding and saying ‘No’ at the outset is essential to good parenting I said, but obstinacy on part of the children, their persistent, steadfastness, whining often pays. I said, “If necessary, you can shed some crocodile tears too. “Try whatever you may have to do, but by next Sunday, if you want to continue to be the part of this team whose popularity is on the rise, you must get a contribution of five rupees each.” “This is the minimum that you should accept from them and because they tend to bargain, start by asking a higher amount, so that it may appear to them that you are grumblingly agreeing for five, but don’t agree for anything less than this.”
“We will start by buying a new ball and then add on other important gear like pads and guard etc.” I said, “The reputation of the team depends on how well it is equipped and the word spreads like wildfire.” “The team that has started getting requests for being played against from as far off places as Lower Kaithu is knocking at the doors of the state-level authorities for recognition and I am sure that some of you budding players will get included in the Ranji Trophy team of Shimla whenever our glorious town gets a chance for having its team and is asked for sending a team for inter-state matches.”
I saw the smiles spreading on all the young faces looking up at me. Their eyes were shining with hope but when my eyes fell on their Hawaichappals and tattered shoes, my own hope fell. However, my confidence in our ability to reach the pinnacle of glory in that quaint Himalayan town soared as if propelled by my own words in our praise. Our team comprised of the boys from the middle class and the poor strata of the society but they were inducted purely on merit. Even Khushal Chand the son of Jiya Lal, who cleaned our toilets was a proud member of our team. I didn’t hear from the teammates about how their struggle for getting five rupees, a formidable sum in those days, was going with their parents as I had my own battle to fight, until Sunil confronted me one day. Sunil was my classmate. He is a member of this group and sometimes reads my posts and may read this too. I don’t know if he remembers it or not. His younger brother, Kapil was one of my teammates. (I heard from him some time ago passed away two years ago.)
“ Haanbhaibahutdehshatfailarakhihai tune.” Yes buddy, you have spread quite a scare, he said. I got his point and smiled. His brother must have been pestering the parents for money as the effect of my speech seemed to have affected him severely. I said, “The contributions are voluntary, not compulsory”, but I realized that making the team a star team of Shimla will be difficult, although it was a “star-studded” team, unfortunately, it was cash-strapped.
I hadn’t got any coaching in the game, but I was good at it or so I thought. Illusion about my own ability has been my driving force. Our neighbour Mr. Raj played for the A.G. office. Their team had a good reputation in the town. They played matches with other local teams on Sundays. I got a chance of playing as one of their team as he used to take me along wherever they played. I played against some teams at Annandale Ground and at BCS when we played against them. I was a young lad of 14-15 years of age and was increasingly becoming aware of the hormonal changes taking place inside me. One Mr. K- of A.G. office team told me that he had some old balls with him at home and he would be happy to give me those. Mr. Raj might have spoken to him about our constant need for the balls. I was delighted at his graciousness and agreed to visit his apartment for collecting those on the following Sunday.
I hard learned about some people being gay but the world still looked pretty safe to the children growing up in the last century. I shouldn’t be saying this with this degree of certitude because a thought of another incident that occurred a few years before this with me has come to mind. I will tell you about that some other time, but being gay is one thing and stalking and trapping the children for realizing one’s perversions is quite another thing. I didn’t know that there were wolves in sheep’s clothing. I reached his apartment at Lower Kaithu in the afternoon.  It was a summer day and he opened the door in response to my knock after getting up from the bed, where perhaps he was taking the afternoon siesta.
The room was small and it was brilliantly warmed up by the sun as the side of the room facing the west had glass panes all over. After opening the door he went and sat on the bed again. As there were no chairs in the room, at least none in my sight, he asked me to sit on the bed. I don’t know if he had any chairs or they had been removed by him. He sat himself in the semi-reclining position with one arm resting on the knee of the leg drawn up while the other leg lay flat on the bed. What struck odd to me was that he was in his undergarments and he hadn’t chosen to put on Pajamas or pants after I entered the room. Though I was a young boy in my early teens, I had learnt enough about human anatomy through analogies drawn with the animals in the General Science books and nature had taught me some through raging testosterones in my testicles. This was fortified with a lot of other data collected in my head through the exchange of information with peers and friends. His sitting in the bed without even a Lungi certainly appeared as indecent behaviour to me.
He asked me if I had a girlfriend and whether I had done anything with her. That was a grey area. My knowledge was limited to hearsays and I could neither brag nor lie. I shook my head. I wasn’t sure about what and how to do, because I knew it wasn’t as simple as was made out to be in the General Science book with a male frog riding on top of the female and pressing her body. The details were sketchy and the scope of enlightenment was lost to us on the day it was being taught in the school by Mr. Hastir, because of the mischief played by Surinder on Upinder at the wrong time. But neither through the book and nor from the peers and friends had I learnt about the male wanting to do it with a male. I had the knowledge of a common cuss word “G&^*u” that we used liberally in the language spoken among the friends, but that was used for someone who was dimwit-stupid. It would be wrong on my part if I say that I was ignorant about it, but truthfully all I knew then was that this if done was more for the purpose of demonstrating brute force or instilling fear and drawing rather sadistic than carnal pleasures.
He put his hand around me and tried to draw me closer in an attempt to kiss me. I pushed him away. I was surprised to notice a stir in his underwear. A tiny drop had wet it too. I was not interested in any of this. Though there had been some attempts on me at some previous occasions, one of which I mentioned in my posts here, but to bargain my “Izzat” for getting some old cricket balls was a bit too much. I got up from the bed and moved towards the door. He realized that he had approached the wrong guy and so for making some amends, he broke into fake laughter and said, “ Bholetu, tebura mana laya” ( Bhole (Bhola Is my pet name)- you got offended). I didn’t answer. He got up and pulled out two old balls from the cupboard and gave them to me. I returned a fake smile, meaning that I will ignore all that happened between us and as a kind of payback for his goodwill gesture minus the largesse he wanted to give along with a set of those old used balls.
An interesting piece of text that I recently read in the book “Hilly Billy Elegy” about a sure test of finding if one was gay or not was told to the writer J.D. Vance by his grandmother when as a child he was overcome by a fear that he was perhaps gay because he had no girlfriend and his best friend was a boy and the..He say:-
I’ll never forget the time I convinced myself that I was gay. I was eight or nine, maybe younger, and I stumbled upon a broadcast by some fire-and-brimstone preacher. The man spoke about the evils of homosexuals, how they had infiltrated our society, and how they were all destined for hell absent some serious repenting. At the time, the only thing I knew about gay men was that they preferred men to women.
This described me perfectly: I disliked girls, and my best friend in the world was my buddy Bill. Oh no, I’m going to hell.   I broached this issue with Mamaw, confessing that I was gay and I was worried that I would burn in hell. She said, “Don’t be a fucking idiot, how would you know that you’re gay?” I explained my thought process. Mamaw chuckled and seemed to consider how she might explain to a boy my age. Finally she asked, “J.D., do you want to suck dicks?” I was flabbergasted. Why would someone want to do that? She repeated herself, and I said, “Of course not!” “Then,” she said, “you’re not gay. And even if you did want to suck dicks, that would be okay. God would still love you.” That settled the matter. Apparently, I didn’t have to worry about being gay anymore. Now that I’m older, I recognize the profundity of her sentiment: Gay people, though unfamiliar, threatened nothing about Mamaw’s being. There were more important things for a Christian to worry about.
In the 1960s the verb sucking could only be understood in the pretext of sucking the nipples as a part of foreplay while indulging in the act with the legally acquired wife and that too with the lights off. I think it was not expected of them and was neither offered as a bonus by the consenting wives in gratitude to the husbands they genuinely loved. I doubt if there were such husbands who fitted the bill and the wives who were willing to please them in bed. At least until I was an active part of the productive society, I never heard of any such things from people I knew, but to think that such camaraderie existed between willing male partners was normal or will become normal somewhere down the line was beyond the imagination of a straight kid who had been brought up in a conservative town tucked in the Himalayan hills.
As an Indian, it is impossible for me to think that such a conversation can take place between any members within the family and I can’t even imagine that any elder can be approached for alleviating such fears and of all the people a grandmother can speak such words to a child of nine years of age.  Maybe it can happen in American homes only. Now when the whole world is becoming sensitive to the needs of LGBTs, perhaps the parents can broach subjects with the children but back in the 1960s, I wonder how such people came to terms with their singularities.

And Ye Shall Know the Truth  and the Truth Shall... Nevermind!
In perusing the internet a few years ago, I decided to read through some of the information a few seminaries and divinity schools were advertising about the academic and social culture of the institution. Like most moderate and liberal schools, the notion of inclusion seemed to be the go-to buzz word. I wondered to myself, “what does the term inclusion mean?” Inclusion is defined as “the action or state of including or of being included within a group or structure.” (Oxford Dictionary). I thought to myself, “this is wonderful! Everybody could find a presence in this space”. In navigating through a few interviews, sitting in a few chapel services, and experiencing some of the lectures offered by a few of the faculty of a few institutions, I soon discovered a scary truth. Inclusion was not a buzz word; Inclusion was a bond word. The assignment for this final blog is centered on posting something related to faith, value, or religion. For me, this blog frame itself on value.
There are many things that I have learned during these past two years. I have learned how to research, find my voice, argue my perspective, and see the world from a much broader context than I did when I arrived. With all that I have acquired, there is still one lesson learned that impacts me the most. I have discovered that inclusion does not mean inclusion. I remember talking with one of the professors on correctly understanding inclusion. My assessment was this; inclusion to me suggests that I frame God as this lamp on your desk, and you frame God as this chair that I am sitting next to. An inclusionary space implies that both of us have to respect and regard each other’s framing, knowing that our framings are different. I cannot make God a lamp for you, and you cannot make God a chair for me. But, collectively, we can respect each other’s lens of how we see and define God. My professor told me, “you’ve got it.” Although the response from my professor was appreciated, my assessment was not present in context.
Several moderate and liberal institutions speak of being inclusive. But, when the smoke has cleared and the dust has settled, you discover that they exist as spaces of reverse bondage. While this notion is not printed in their circulars or advertised on their websites, it is clearly a truth that ye shalt soon know! I tried hard not to embrace this notion, but one major factor suggests that my claim is accurate. Let us take a brief moment to review the sign. This way, you can respond to this blog in an informed way. Remember, our position frames itself through the use of Oxford’s definition of the term inclusion.
Sign # 1 – God can be represented in any form or context, EXCEPT, a masculine perspective. We can sing about She, we can pray to She, we can write about Her, but when the sound of He enters the room, you would have thought that a fire broke out! How do these acts represent real inclusion? If the framing by which several students subscribe to God is shunned, can these spaces really be perceived as a place where “everyone is included?” We are okay with knowing our mother, our grandmother, and our sister prayed for us. But what about our father? I am not suggesting that we should abandon the use of feminine terms for God. I am merely suggesting that the exclusion of masculine terms do not represent an authentic inclusionary space. Real inclusion implies that God can be a mother to you and a father to me. Real inclusion does not suggest that I have the right to superimpose my experience on you that shaped my framing. Still, I can hear you and respect your position. Real inclusion does not exclude; it makes room for someone else.
If we are going to experience real inclusion within religious institutions, we must push these institutions to exercise the tenets of inclusion on principle instead of propaganda. If moderate and liberal institutions are not going to use and implement real inclusion, then it may be time to reframe their marketing materials. Let us work together to make our religious institutions a safe space for everyone who walks through those doors. In the words of Professor Mark Miller, let us “draw the circle wide and make it wider still.” The purpose of the more full circle is so all may have room to fit. And, the last time I checked, all still means all. We titled this blog, ‘And Ye Shall Know the Truth and The Truth Shall… Nevermind.” Now that we have presented some truth about inclusion, do you feel free? Not really.

Short story (although I beg you to read the entire blog): I’m selling a drawing of the Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain house and donating the profits to preservation and restoration efforts.
BUY THE CHAMBERLAIN HOUSE ORIGINAL ART HERE. BUY THE CHAMBERLAIN HOUSE ART PRINTS HERE.
Now, let’s have the whole story. The links will be at the end of the blog again too. I don’t know if my efforts will be successful but my hope is you’ll feel my passion by the end of this blog.
We’re here to talk about something very near and dear to my heart – the Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain house in Brunswick, Maine. The porches that Chamberlain himself built on his home of over fifty years are in structural danger. Together, you and I are going to help. Buildings like this one belong to all of us.
Briefly, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was a Union general in the American Civil War who rose to that rank without formal military training (he was a professor before the war). He volunteered for service, and then later became a four-term governor of Maine, followed by president of Bowdoin College.
His wife, Fanny, was a rare example of an independent woman, having a career of her own as a music teacher and an artist before she decided to get married. The two of them were quite liberal in a lot of ways; believing women should be admitted to college wherever they chose, believing in the right to contraception and family planning, believing in racial equality, and so forth.
For a bit of context into the time and place the Chamberlain family lived, they knew Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and attended church with her for years. Stowe sometimes held gatherings of Bowdoin College students in her home where she read chapters of Uncle Tom’s Cabin aloud. Chamberlain took Fanny to some of these readings while they were “dating” (dating wasn’t the term in those days).
National history largely forgot Chamberlain until Ken Burns heavily featured him throughout his documentary series, The Civil War. Then in the early 90s, Jeff Daniels actually played Chamberlain (seen in character on the left) in the film, Gettysburg, followed ten years later by playing him again in Gods and Generals.
His impact reaches far beyond Maine. Even I live in Atlanta and I’m just three miles from both Chamberlain Street and Oakland Cemetery where one of his best friends, General John B. Gordon, is buried.
You’re beginning to see why this family and this house matter to American history. We could sit here discussing Chamberlain’s fascinating life and undeniable affect on Maine history until we write a book. In fact, there are a lot of books about him, his military commands, and his family.
Not only did the family live in this house for over fifty years, but Henry Wadsworth Longfellow rented rooms in the same house before they bought it. Longfellow’s presence in the house is still felt today in the upstairs parlor where a portion of the wallpaper he put up is still there.
This is the house today. Originally, it was only one-and-a-half floors. Chamberlain had the entire structure moved to the corner of Potter and Maine, and then lifted about eleven feet off the ground to build an entirely new first floor addition. He designed most of the first floor himself, including a beautiful curved staircase that greeted guests upon walking through the ruby red foyer. It’s is one of the most architecturally important houses in the state of Maine due to the odd mixture of building and decorating styles blended together from different popular aesthetics in the nineteenth century – Cape Cod, Gothic Revival, and some Art Nouveau influences. Chamberlain wasn’t even a trained architect or interior designer.
The Pejepscot History Center (PHC) rescued the house from demolition in 1983 after decades of being rented out to Bowdoin College students. It had been chopped up into seven apartments and the interior was painted psychedelic colors when they acquired it. Almost 37 years under the careful stewardship of historians and volunteers has seen great strides toward preserving and restoring the home to the way it stood when Chamberlain lived there, but only partially so.
As of my last visit, renters still live in the upper portions of the house in, I believe, three apartments because renting brings in money for upkeep. Many of the unoccupied rooms upstairs haven’t yet been restored either, including all of the Chamberlain family bedrooms. The downstairs bathroom with original fittings and the master bedroom upstairs were being used for storage instead of teaching and tourism. It takes a lot of money to preserve and restore historical buildings. Brunswick is a small town and Maine is a small town state.
Why does the decay of an old house matter to me?
My family name is Jewett. That was, once upon a time, an influential name up in Maine, so much so that if you take a drive over to South Berwick, you can tour my ancestors’ home. I’m related to Sarah Orne Jewett and she left her home to Historic New England when she died. If you click on her name, it’ll take you to the website for that house. There, you’ll see the potential when important places have the resources for full, meticulous restoration and preservation. I have a vision for the Chamberlain home being just as preserved, studied, and restored as the Jewett house.
I’ve had the privilege of visiting the Chamberlain house twice. Tour guides were wonderful and well-informed, the gift shop was better than most battlefield gift shops, and there was a beautiful wheelchair ramp built onto the back porch – a rarity for historical landmarks. In the above photo, you’re looking at my first trip to the house twelve years ago when I was quite sick and underweight compared to now. Sick or not, historical preservation is my passion. So I went to Maine.
I’d like to show you more photos from my trips to the Chamberlain house. I quickly grabbed some from my collection so you can see how special this place is to many of us in the American history, women’s history, and Civil War fields.
In 2018 and 2019, the PHC raised $48,000 for serious restoration work on the exterior of the house. They even got the wheelchair ramp rebuilt on the back porch as a bonus. It was a really spectacular job and it all looks like it belonged on the house from the beginning, although General Chamberlain never had a ramp back there.
The old ramp and porch.
The new ramp and porch.
I’m showing you this because I want you to see what’s possible through the help of donations, foundations, and grants to not only restore historical landmarks but also to make them accessible to more people in the future. Places like this really depend on tourism for cash flow in addition to the few grants that are available. Tourism matters economically to small towns. It pays to have interesting landmarks, speaking in practical terms. We’re American. We understand that money talks.
Take a look at this photo of the house from the 1870s. Do you see the glass porch on the first floor, and then the open air porch above it? Pay attention to those.
I’m letting the Pejepscot History Center explain what happened. This is from their fundraiser page. I’m not sure if the fundraiser page is still open, but if it is, I’ll update this blog with a link.
Thanks to $48,000 raised from foundations and individuals over 2018-2019, we were able to undertake extensive exterior restoration work on the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum starting in the spring of 2019.
Four faces of the building have now been lovingly restored, but in the process, considerable rot due to deferred maintenance in the past was found and corrected.
This led to fewer funds available for addressing the final part of this Phase I restoration effort: the two historic porches on the southeast corner of the building, which have some of the most interesting architecture on the building, and provide considerable structural support.
Unfortunately, they too have more deterioration than originally anticipated, necessitating additional funds to repair and rebuild the porches correctly.
Chamberlain raised the house 11 feet in the air in 1871 to add the lower story, thereby adding the first floor porch himself. He especially loved these porches. Over the years, he and the family enjoyed sitting on them and raising plants in the ample southern sunshine.
So I decided to make donations interesting. Individually, none of us can afford the $20,000 the PHC needs to raise to save Chamberlain’s porches from decaying and deteriorating. I know I can’t.
But what I can do is use my skills as an artist to draw attention to the house and make it worth your effort to help rescue the house. I’m a portrait artist most of the time, selling commissions of ordinary people as well as portraits set in highly researched historical scenes. To me, the Chamberlain house like all other historical houses are like living things with souls and sets of memories all their own.
The idea occurred to me that if people were willing to buy my portraits of people, perhaps they would be willing to buy a “portrait” of a house. I had already done a Christmas-themed piece of art showcasing the Chamberlain family’s church, First Parish, and I was interested in doing another piece anyway. If I could use my artistic drive to raise awareness for historical preservation, all the better.
So I got to work. Watch the video below to see me in action.
Yes, the manner in which I do my art is a bit different. We’ll go ahead and address the elephant in the room since many of you might be new to my website and my art. If you didn’t guess from my other photos, I’m physically disabled. I was born with a condition called Arthrogryposis and the nature of it means I need to do everything with the tools in my mouth, whether it’s writing, typing, chopping vegetables, sewing, or creating art. I’ve had about nineteen surgeries to date with a high probability of two more surgeries in 2020. Selling art is how I make extra money.
This time, however, I’m not making money from the art. I’ve decided to sell both the original and various sized prints made from the Chamberlain house piece for the benefit of the restoration project. When I sell this piece, I will make a donation from 80% of the profits (I need 20% for shipping, materials, etc.) to the Pejepscot History Center and I will make public all of the pertinent documents. That way everything is crystal clear and there are no questions.
This is the completed piece of art.
It took me about three weeks to complete it. I used a combination of Pentel mechanical pencils with .5 mm lead and Prismacolor Ebony pencils on 11×14-inch mixed media paper. Each detail of the house was researched and replicated to the best of my ability down to the placement of the trees, the curtains from the 1870s photographs, the wrought iron fence design, and the woodwork. If you look up top, you’ll see the famous chimney Chamberlain added after the war with the Maltese cross. He was a Fifth Corps officer and the Maltese cross was their insignia, a symbol found throughout the house.
You’ll be able to purchase this piece of art in my shop.
BUY THE CHAMBERLAIN HOUSE ORIGINAL ART HERE. BUY THE CHAMBERLAIN HOUSE ART PRINTS HERE.
The original, as in the actual piece of art I worked on, is 11×14 inches and costs $385.00 USD. Prints (5×7, 8×10, or 11×17) range in price from $12.00 USD to $24.00 USD and are made on high quality cardstock with a glossy finish.
Orders larger than 8×10 inches are shipped in a tube with the art rolled inside to protect it from rough postal workers. Orders 8×10 and smaller are shipped in flat bubble mailers reinforced with cardboard. All customers are given a tracking number so they can keep an eye on their packages with the postal service as well. Every order within the United States includes free shipping. Shipping for international orders will be calculated at the time of purchase.
Please consider purchasing this piece. It’s such a worthy cause. I realize there is a lot happening in the world, and I’m doing my part for those causes too, but we should care about American history too.  We need to be thinking about what kind of tangible legacy we’re going to leave our children and grandchildren. Wouldn’t you want to teach your descendants to celebrate and honor a man who believed in the qualities of a better world that we’re still fighting to create? What better way to honor him and his family than to help preserve the place they loved and called home for over half a century?
If you’re not interested in buying my art, that’s quite all right. There are choices.
One option is to let me collect the donations at PayPal.me/ArtByJessicaJewett and I’ll get it to the Pejepscot History Center for you. Please specify that you are donating to the Chamberlain house in the notes. I’ll send donations on the 15th of every month (when there are any) and I will give you copies of the receipts.
Or you can make a donation directly to the Pejepscot History Center, but please make sure you specify that your donation is for the Chamberlain house. They don’t have digital donations aside from the annual membership drives. The new 2020 membership drive hasn’t been created yet since they are closed until February 4.

Taiwan Can Defend Its Democracy
Joseph Schumpeter described indirect democracy as an “institutional arrangement for arriving at political decisions in which individuals acquire the power to decide by means of a competitive struggle for the people’s vote.”
The test of whether mainland China wants peace is if they respect the competitive elections and free speech of the Republic of China.
To keep peace, the Republic of China must maintain its formidable defenses until mainland China, too, comes to respect competitive elections and free speech.
Tumblr media
Source: South China Morning Post
Professor Zhou Qi of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences wrote in the book Debating China, “It is very likely that if China were to adapt American-style democracy, the United States would no longer fear the ‘China threat’ so strongly, since Americans are convinced that democratic countries do not go to war with each other. But since China’s cultural and political traditions differ so widely from those of the United States, such an outcome can exist only in the imagination.”
The People’s Republic of China exercises authority over mainland China. It is an authoritarian government, whereby government attempts to control the political sphere of human existence. Citizens may enjoy some social and economic freedom, up to the point of government control of the political sphere.
However, unlike mainland China, the Republic of China exercises authority over the Taiwan area. It is a democracy, a government comprised of officials who are elected to office by citizens, uses majority rule to choose officials who select policy, and enacts legislation with the cooperation or assent of citizens through civil servants.
Professor Jia Qingguo of Peking University wrote in Debating China, “Political reforms created space for activists to fan anti-China sentiment and promote Taiwan independence. Decades of physical separation have created a new political identity among Taiwanese residents, and more and more they identify with Taiwan as an independent state under the name ‘Republic of China.’”
Citizens of a politically diverse government necessarily argue their beliefs, but they must also know that no one else will fight and die for their freedoms against any who would end them.
Tanner Greer, a foreign policy analyst who lived in Beijing and Taipei, wrote in a blog post that the Republic of China’s “mismanagement of the conscription system … is criminal,” linking to a Taipei Times article in which an ROC Marine Corps veteran said that unlike South Korea or Singapore, where men serve two-year terms of compulsory service, Taiwan requires men to serve only four months, too short a period to be effective.
In the same Taipei Times article, Lauren Dickey of King’s College London wrote, “If younger Taiwanese do not feel an urgency to fight for the freedoms they have, there is scant incentive to join the military. … National defense has to matter to Taiwanese of all ages.”
Greer also wrote, “The debate over whether the legal status of Taiwan was decided by the Cairo Declaration or the Treaty of San [Francisco] irks because it is irrelevant. At the end of the day, the freedom of Taiwan depends on two things only: 1. Are there men and women willing to die to keep Taiwan free? 2. Do the Chinese understand how committed they are? … The whole structure rests on the Taiwanese people. If they are willing to sacrifice what must be sacrificed to maintain a credible deterrent, then their autonomy will be preserved.”
Greer recently published an article in Foreign Policy, “Taiwan Can Win a War With China.” In a blog post about the article, Greer wrote, “Taiwan's greatest weakness is resolve. As I discuss in the article, the Taiwanese people have little confidence in their military. The Chinese invasion strategy is designed to take advantage of this. Easton's research reveals that their plans are centered on shocking the Taiwanese into submission. The success of the Chinese invasion strategy thus turns on the morale of the Taiwanese citizenry. That morale, in turn, will turn on the confidence the Taiwanese have in their own defensive systems. If the true strength of their position is not communicated to average people, their position will have no strength.”
Ian Easton’s study, The China Invasion Threat: Taiwan's Defense and American Strategy in East Asia, uses ROC Ministry of National Defense studies and People’s Liberation Army manuals, while Michael Beckley’s paper for International Security, “The Emerging Military Balance in East Asia: How China’s Neighbors Can Check Chinese Naval Expansion,” uses historical comparison and U.S. Defense Department simulations.
Despite this, Greer states, their conclusions are complimentary: “A long range SSM costs far less than any ship it might hit in a U.S. Carrier Strike Group. But the same is true for missiles launched from Taiwan (or, for that matter, Vietnam or the Philippines). We are quickly moving into a weapons regime that strongly favors the defender. Add this to the incredible difficulties inherit in organizing the largest amphibious invasion of human history, the unique hurdles posed by the geography and weather of Taiwan, and the general lack of training and experience on the part of the PLA forces that will be doing the invading. The potential for failure is high in the best of circumstances. With minimal military investment the Taiwanese can ensure it would be the worst of circumstances.”
Citizens of the Republic of China must know not only that their military is capable of successfully defeating an invasion from mainland China, not only that military service is critical for continued democracy, but also that even when there is no peace, we should not lose hope in the imperfect possibilities of democracy.
Human history is not infinite, and democracy only exists in a few thousands of those recorded years. After hundreds of thousands of years of dictators or one-party elites unaccountably abusing power, it is too soon to say that the messiness of democracy does not offer less oppression, less suffering, and more possibilities.

An Introduction to Chéri Samba
Tumblr media
Known for his playful, brightly-colored, graphic paintings with a political message, Chéri Samba is one of the most visible Contemporary African artists on the market today. His goal, as expressed, is to make people think critically about the world around them, and his topics range from the impact of colonialism to what it means to be a successful artist. Samba’s work has been included in basically every turning-point exhibition that is considered part of the genre’s history. His paintings have also been featured - and highly publicized - in every single one of the Sotheby’s Modern & Contemporary African art sales since they began in 2017. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2007, and is represented in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions like MoMA and the Centre Pompidou.  Through this blog entry, I aim to introduce the reader to Samba and his unique paintings, providing context that will help hopefully encourage him or her to explore further.
Born in Kinto M’Vuila, a small village in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Samba came of age in a pivotal moment for his country. In the 1960s, the DRC was liberated from its Belgian colonial rule - known to be among the most violent and oppressive - and entered into a new era with “music, bars and cars” as it became an independent state. Eventually, the DRC’s economy crashed and became entangled in poverty, but the time in which Samba began to paint for a local audience (the 1970s) was one characterized by optimism and great political change. Through his artwork, Samba has set out to portray the everyday realities of Congolese life from the late 20th century up until the present day. Topics have included the involvement of youth in violence and corruption (ex. Little Kadogo, I am for Peace, That is Why I Like Weapons, 2004), as well as the prosperity of the upper-class (ex. Un Vie non Ratée (A Successful Life), 1995).
Samba has shown an interest in dilemmas that go beyond the borders of his home country and that affect us globally as well. The painting Probléme d’Eau (Water Problem), 2004 takes the international water crisis as its main theme, showing his intention to use his art to serve a purpose, or at the very least, make a political statement. Speaking about the difficulty accessing clean drinking water in Africa, Samba has said: “It’s a ridiculous problem. Why don’t the Americans help African governments to put a water tap in every home? It might be expensive, but I wonder, how much are they spending on missions to find out if there is water on Mars?” With this painting, Samba illustrates what he finds to be the absurdity of forgoing the needs of our own species in order to look for life (or evidence of life in the form of water) on other planets.

Samba’s personal life plays an important role as well in the understanding of his works because many of his later works, from the late 1980s onwards, take this topic as their main theme or focal point. Samba always knew he wanted to be an artist, even from when he was a young child drawing pictures in the sand in Kinto M’Vuila. In primary school, Samba was known as the best artist, and he even sold his drawings to friends. Worried that he might not be able to make enough money off his drawings, Samba turned to painting by the time that he got to secondary school in hopes that it would lead him to a real career. One of Samba’s paintings was taken on tour with the school’s soccer team and received a huge positive reaction. Looking at the painting, Samba realized he needed to get out of his small village and pursue his artistic talent seriously.
Samba’s father, however, was not supportive of his son’s talent for art. Instead, he wanted his eldest son to stay home in the village and take care of the family farm. Samba’s struggle with his father to feel support for his artistic career plays a major role in the artist’s personal history, and has served as the inspiration for some of Samba’s paintings. In Le pardon libére, 2015, we see flames burst from Samba’s heart, as he dreams of following his love for creating art. Samba’s father stands with his back facing his son, representative of his dismissiveness regarding his son’s dream. Knowing that Samba was one of ten children, and the oldest male child, we might have some sympathy with his father, who was paying money for his son to get an education in order to help his family’s business.

At age sixteen, Samba decided that it was time to follow his heart, even without his father’s support, and left for Kinshasa in 1972. Carrying with him a burning appetite for success and recognition of his talents, Samba arrived in the city and used his existing skills to land a job in a sign painter’s studio where he produced billboards and advertisements for local clientele. Three years later, at age 19, Samba opened up his own sign painting studio and also began drawing cartoons for Congolese entertainment magazine called Bilenge Info. The same year, Samba experimented with painting on sacking cloth, canvas being too expensive, and showing his work on the street. At first, people would pass by and not really notice his artworks. To captivate the attention of the Kinois who passed by, Samba began using text in his paintings, incorporating speech bubbles and narrative lines usually written in French or Lingala (one of the four DRC languages).
His paintings became popular with an intentional audience when Samba participated in the exhibition Les Magiciens de la Terre in Paris in 1989. Following the show, collector Jean Pigozzi began acquiring works by the artists featured in the show, including Samba- whom has since achieved international fame within the Contemporary African art world. In 2004, the artist landed a solo show (J’aime Chéri Samba) at Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris, and was featured in another show there in 2015-2016 (Beauté Congo 1926-2015). Formal exhibition catalogues were produced for both shows, and although written in French (and therefore not accessible to everyone interested in researching the artist), they provide a valuable record of Samba and his work. The catalogue for Beauté Congo 1926-2015 is available in major art research libraries like the Watson Library at the Met and the MoMA library.
One of the most well-known (or at least visible in terms of the Contemporary African art market) Samba works is titled J’aime La Couleur (I Like Color), of which the artist made many versions. The artist himself is shown in the center of the composition, holding a paintbrush dripping with different colored droplets. The central figure is also slightly surrealist, as his skin is unfolding into a staircase-like form into the sky. Different versions of the work have come up at auction fifteen times. Perhaps the work is so popular because color is one of the signature marks of Samba’s paintings, and here he declares his love for color - matching his personal philosophy with his artistic style. Discussing the work, Samba explains: “Colour is everywhere. To me, colour is life. Our heads must twirl around as if in a spiral to realise that everything around us is nothing but colours. So I say 'I like colour' instead of saying 'I like painting'. Colour is the universe, the universe is life, painting is life."

My personal favorite Samba work is one in which he displays his signature whimsical, almost surrealist, tendency in full-force in order to relay his message. The work is called Le secret d’un petit poisson devenu grand (The secret of a small fish grown up), painted in 2002. The purpose of the painting is to instruct young artists on how to achieve success. Seeing himself as a role model, Samba has said that he hopes to inspire the next generation of African painters.

In the work, the little fish becomes big because he has a “secret,” and that is listening to everybody, but ultimately making his own decisions with his heart. For this reason, the anatomical heart fills the largest ear present on the man-fish figure, symbolizing that among all the voices that we hear, the one of our hearts is the most important.  If no one is criticizing you, Samba explains, then it means that no one cares about you. In fact, this kind of exposure is even more important for African artists, Samba believes, because Africans should be proud of what they do. Before the exhibition Magicians de la Terre, Samba believes that people in the international art world did not believe that Africans could make art in a contemporary style.
Still working and making art, Samba splits his time between Kinshasa and Paris, and is represented by Galerie Pascal Polar in Brussels, Belgium. In terms of what Samba has been up to recently, his works were shown at The Fondation Louis Vuitton in 2017 as part of the exhibition Art/Afrique, le Nouvel Atelier, which featured works from the Pigozzi collection. Gallery Magnin-A, based in Paris, showed Samba’s work at 1-54 Contemporary African Art fair in London in 2017. Sotheby’s sold four of his paintings in their Modern & Contemporary African Art auction in May 2017, five in their March 2018 auction, and seven in their October 2018 auction. Concurrent to the inaugural edition of 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in Marrakech, Samba’s work was shown in an exhibition at the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) in February 2018. In the summer of 2018, his paintings were shown at the Evora Africa festival in Portugal and at the University of Michigan. Who knows what’s next on the horizon for this Contemporary African art star? We can only stay tuned into ContemporaryAfricanArtUnframed.tumblr.com to find out.

WRITING, MANAGER'S SCHEDULE, STUPID
Or we can improve it, which usually means encrusting it with gratuitous ornament. Working slowly and meticulously is premature optimization.1 I'm told it derives ultimately from Marvin Minsky, in the worst case it won't be for too long. But that approach is very risky. And because startups are in this sense doubly valuable to acquirers, acquirers will often pay more than an ordinary investor would. So you want to start them. So whatever it costs to establish a mediocre university, for an additional half billion or so you could have a great one. Audiences like to be flattered; they like jokes; they like to be swept off their feet by a vigorous stream of words.2 They're like a food that's not merely healthy, but counteracts the unhealthy effects of things you've already eaten. Just have building codes that ensure density, and ban large scale developments. And if the answer is a thousand than if it's ten.3
That may be what public speaking is really for. But because he's sitting astride it, he seems to have done ok. A nerd looks at that deal and sees only: pay a fortune for a small, dark, noisy apartment. Historically there have always been certain towns that were centers for certain industries, and if you're smart your reinventions may be better than what preceded them. If investors are easily convinced, the startup never happens.4 That was all it took to make the software easy to use. Because they come at the end of that year we had about 70 users. A startup with the best people. Hard, but doable.
After the lecture the most common form of failure is running out of money while you're trying to decide whether to start one it's important to understand that.5 It's practically the standard ending in blog entries—with the addition of a heh or an emoticon, prompted by the all too accurate sense that something is missing. You must feel really tired. The startup hubs in the US knows what it means. As in science, the hard part is seeing something new that users lack. The competitors Google buried would have done them already. We both had roughly zero assets.
In that case, you might ask, why not wait longer? The guys with kids and mortgages are at a real disadvantage.6 I was disgusted by the idea of having a lot of experience themselves in the technology business. Google, but the trouble is, they're not drifting. Why are they so hot to invest in a startup.7 You have to get them beaten out of you by contact with the real world. Professional means doing good work, not elevators and glass walls. A lot of startups involve someone moving. Keep doing it when you start a startup.8 Blue staters think it's subjective, and red staters think it's subjective, and red staters think it's for sissies.
Where the just-do-it model is fast, whether you're Dan Bricklin writing the prototype of VisiCalc in a weekend, or a carefully cropped image of a seacoast town in Maine.9 For example, in a recent essay I pointed out that because you can only manage 1%, it's a sign you haven't yet figured out what you're doing, you can compose expressions however you want. But it certainly wasn't true, and hadn't been true for centuries, that students were serving apprenticeships in the hottest area of scholarship. But I don't wish I were a better speaker like I wish I could say that force was more often used for good than ill, but I'm not sure where I'm heading. Could Americans have nice places to live without undermining the impatient, hackerly spirit you need to know about you and don't want their money, because a lot of good co-founders meet is at work. But should you start a startup? It's as if a chunk of time to try to discover something no one wants. What happened to Don't be Evil?
Google's case the most important thing that the constraints on a normal business protect it from is not competition, however, you're in a powerful position.10 Starting one is at first no more than commitment. The essential task in a startup, but what they want to live at the office in a startup hub, because economically that's what startups are. This won't work for all startups, but most reduce to this: look at something people are trying to do in an essay. That was as far as I know has a serious girlfriend, and everything they own will fit in one car—or more precisely, will either fit in one car or is crappy enough that they don't mind leaving it behind.11 Silicon Valley. If you've lived in New York, where people walk around smiling. For nearly all of history the success of a society was proportionate to its ability to assemble large and disciplined organizations.12 If you think investors can behave badly, it's nothing compared to what they pick up on their own internal design compass like Henry Ford did it to the manufacturers of specialized video editing systems, and now Apple is doing it to the manufacturers of specialized video editing systems, and now Apple is doing it to the expensive models made for professionals. If two companies have the same revenues, it's the company's growth rate.13
So the real question is not what growth rate successful startups tend to have.14 Another thing you can do in a startup. In fact, I could see them thinking that we didn't count for much. What's the difference between Google and a barbershop. There you're not concerned with truth. The good news is that the customer doesn't want what he thinks he wants.15 Perhaps high schools should drop English and just teach writing. That's the connection between technology and liberalism. Several times a week I set aside a chunk of time to meet individually with all the other seniors; no one regards you as a failure, because your own personal bias points in the same way the classic airline pilot manner is said to derive from Chuck Yeager. A startup that grows at 1% a week will grow 1.
Notes
Even the cheap kinds of work have different time quanta. I don't want to lead. But let someone else. Steve hadn't come back.
This was partly confidence, and 20 in Paris. Down rounds are bad news; it is because their company for more than just salary.
Otherwise they'll continue to evolve as e. This phenomenon will be as shocked at some of those things that's not directly exposed to competitive pressure, because it was the least experience creating it. 5% a week for 4 years. Dealers try to avoid becoming an administrator, or can make things very confusing.
Siegel points out that taking time to come if they seem to be a lost cause to try, we'd ask, what that means having type II startups, you can't distinguish between selecting a link and following it; all you'd need to run an online service. A professor at a 5 million cap, but they're not influenced by confidence. Public school kids at least one of these companies wish they weren't, because the remedy was to reboot them, if you start to finance themselves with retained earnings till the Glass-Steagall act in 1933. Or it may be a product of number of restaurants that still require jackets for men.
College English Departments Come From? Trevor Blackwell points out that this had since been exceeded by actors buying their startups.
The reason not to make programs easy to write it all yourself. Microsoft itself didn't raise outside money, and others, and it introduced us to Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, both of which he can be useful here, because some schools work hard to say because most of the things attributed to Confucius and Socrates resemble their actual opinions.
This prospect will make developers pay more attention to not screwing up. All you have to. Eric Horvitz.
Emmett Shear, and as an adult.
It's unpleasant because the kind of intensity and dedication from programmers that they imitate even the flaws of big companies weren't plagued by internal inefficiencies, they'd be called unfair.
And no, you can talk about it.
How much better that you can't tell you that if the similarity extended to returns. Put rice in rice cooker and forget about it.
Even though we made comparatively little from it, this thought experiment: set aside for this type are also much cheaper when bought in bulk.
I use. But no planes crash if your goal is to do, just those you can see how universally faces work by their prevalence in advertising. You're going to give up your anti-dilution provisions also protect you against tricks like a headset or router.
When you get bigger, your size helps you grow. Trevor Blackwell presents the following scenario. Maybe at first had two parts: the attempt to discover the most famous example. Whereas the value of a social network for x instead of using special euphemisms for lies that seem excusable according to some abstract notion of fairness or randomly, in the sort of mastery to which the top VCs thus have a moral obligation to respond promptly.
And frankly even these companies unless your initial investors agreed in advance that you're being starved, not because it's a bad idea was that the stuff they're showing him is something special that only a sliver of it, there is one of these groups, which have evolved the way investors say No.

Digital Dilemma By: Olivia Brand
Tumblr media
Do we own our devices or do they own us?
My older brother got his first phone when he was in high school and my parents made it very clear that it was to be used for communication only. I, the middle child, got my first phone in middle school; my parents stressed the importance of being able to use it for communication, but I also got to play games on it like Temple Run and Subway Surfers. My younger sister got her first phone at age 11 with little-to-no restrictions on screen time and what it should be used for. Just like within my family, with every year that passes, society becomes more surrounded and built off of the assumption that everyone has and uses technology. Having multiple social media platforms and technology devices is the norm now; every once in a while you meet someone that has no social media, email, etc. and you can’t help but wonder why?
“No I’m not addicted to my device, I just decide to use it…”
Many people claim that they are not addicted to their phones and social media, rather they are just deciding to use it. A common phrase I hear from people is, “If I wanted to be doing something else I would, but I just enjoy scrolling through TikTok and Instagram.” I challenge you to ask yourself, am I in control of how much I am on my phone, or has this addicting device programmed my brain to use it more than I would like to? Are you even able to read this blog in its entirety without checking your phone or getting distracted by whatever notification pops up on your home screen?
What’s the issue?
You might be asking yourself, why is it a big deal if I use my phone a lot? While technology has provided us with wonderful things such as connecting with people from all across the world and being able to acquire knowledge via the internet, there are many more downsides that get overlooked. As talked about in The Social Dilemma, social media has been manipulated for financial gain and control by big tech companies. Social media has allowed people, without filtration, to spread false information and conspiracy theories, it creates mass chaos and alienation, and it has caused the mental health of teens and young adults to plummet (The Social Dilemma 1:18). When all of these issues are occurring without realization and without being able to stop the addiction, we are in trouble as a society.
Can social media be used for good?
Big tech companies are only as powerful as we let them be. If users of social media turn their notifications off, detox from their accounts, and set screen time limits each day, social media can again become a healthy and beneficial thing for society. Social media has many positive assets too such as being a great exposure platform for the arts and humanities. Now at the click of a button, we are able to see artists, musicians, actors, and so much more perform on social media. There are also so many apps for learning languages such as Duolingo and Babbel. Social media and technology has provided the arts and humanities with a way to spread their works around the globe while simultaneously breaking the stigma about the arts and humanities being easy.
In Henseler’s book, Extraordinary Partnerships: How the Arts and Humanities are Transforming America, she quotes Bailey Reutzel saying ““good” technology is that which connects and serves humanity and allows people—especially those who have been unable—to understand a broader humanity” (Henseler 27). This quote shows us the importance of technology in understanding and being exposed to different aspects of humanity and all it has to offer. Technology can be a great tool if we use it in the right way with the right limitations, and be a great advocating platform for the overlooked, underfunded, liberal arts. I know I will be making some changes to my social media habits; will you?

I just read the most profoundly disturbing thing I have ever beheld with my own two fucking eyes, and I need to rant about it. You guys can’t help me process it any better, but at least we can all join together in a mighty chorus of ‘what the ACTUAL fuck??’
This is not a funny post lamenting another weird creature/human atrocity that I delved from the darkest depths of Amazon, this is a situation where I’m putting the rest of this rant under a cut because I’m going to include large chunks of text that romanticizes child molestation.
You have been warned. Do not read on if you can’t stand that sort of content.
So, if you’ve been following this blog for a while, then you’ve seen me gleefully lampooning the batshit romances of an author called Mary Anne Graham. This is the author of pee hole fingering fame and that one time a man’s top ho killed herself using a wooden paddle she had carved into the exact likeness of his penis because he was having too much gay sex with his boyfriend and neglecting his harem. There are always anatomical oopsies galore (including a man having two different openings to his anus) and general wtfery that’s usually absolutely hysterical.
I picked up her new book on Kindle Unlimited a while back, read most of it, guffawed my way through it as usual, and then forgot about it for a bit while I read other books that understand metaphors actually have to make sense and melting eyes do not denote desperate infatuation, but rather some kind of deadly disease. I went back to it today deciding I’d push through it to the end, since my Kindle said there were only twenty minutes left to the end of the book.
What a fucking mistake that was.
This book was full of the usual hilarious dipshittery until the last few minutes, when it suddenly took the most disturbing turn I’ve ever seen. I’m going to post the synopsis so you understand the basic premise of the story, and then I’ll summarize the scene leading up to what I’m going to copy and paste, so you understand the context.
Synopsis:  Russian gypsy Prince Vladimir Batalova didn’t await meeting his soul mate. He’d known her for years. She was the daughter of Tobar, the gypsy who married Vlad’s mother and saved her from her abusive marriage. Vlad’s noble father abhorred the youngest son produced by his idiotic marriage to a dirty gypsy. Tobar accepted Vlad, treating him as family, equal to his own son, Nic, and his daughter, Mala. Vlad returned Tobar’s affection and considered Nic his brother, but Mala? He’d never felt brotherly about Mala. Vlad spent years dreading the letter that would tell him of Mala’s marriage to a fine gypsy lad. Instead of a letter, he got Tobar and Nic delivering Mala to London to save her from certain ravishment. They asked Vlad to fulfill his mother’s dying wish: that Mala be brought to him to enter society and find a husband. Now, Vlad must turn the gypsy he loved into a debutante, find her a husband and have her under his roof, within touching distance. Even with the help of all his friends, the sixth sense he shared with his buddy, Boz, and some faerie magic, Vlad knew he could never find a happily ever after. His forever was forbidden unless he convinced Mala that the bond they had shared wasn’t the one they should share – and that taking each other was worth losing the family they both adored.
So, they wind up getting married under English law, everyone is happy, everything is shiny, etc., and then Mala is suddenly carried off by an unknown horseman. Vlad figures out that it’s her brother and that he’s taken her back to their encampment, so he and some of his friends hightail it over there to get her back. Turns out Mala is not willing to go because she has convinced herself that because he didn’t perform a Romani wedding with her, he means to throw her aside and vanish eventually, just like he did when she was younger (shortly after meeting one another and becoming family, he suddenly up and took off and never explained why). He says it’s because he’s a demon or some shit, and the reader is suddenly made aware that he has this deep dark secret connected to why he ran away years ago, though at no point prior to this does the narration mention that something ugly is gnawing at his conscience. (Conveniently, it explains that the secret is so terrible even he forgot about it. But then he remembers it well enough to make a very detailed confession of something that happened years ago.)
Mala tells him that she will not return with him unless he confesses this secret and she can judge whether or not he truly loves her and will be faithful to her for all time.
So he does: ‘”I swear to you that I’m no deviant. I’ve never had a sexual interest in children. Never. Well, never until you were twelve and I came to meet your Papa and attend his wedding to my mother. Mother introduced us and my heart stopped. I froze and don’t even recall if I spoke. Then you ran up to give me a hug in welcome and my most private part unfroze with a vengeance.”
He paused for breath and to give her a chance to kick him and run away--but when she did neither, he continued. “I was horrified at myself, but helpless against the force of my response. Through the ceremony I positioned myself behind a small shrub of a convenient height and vowed not to so much as look at you. Course, I couldn’t look at anyone or anything else. When the women began dancing around the couple after the vows, I watched your budding breasts jiggle when you kicked and imagined myself...,”
A noise in the background halted his words, and he jumped ahead. “That night, around the fire, Tobar gave an amazing, emotional speech, where he said that in marrying my mother, he acquired another son. My blood father hated me for existing as I was a living reminder of his unpardonable lapse of judgment in wedding a damned gypsy. Your father accepted me, Russian blood and all. I couldn’t repay his affection by lusting after my step-sister. I left that night and vowed to stay away until whatever demon that had possessed me was evicted.
He then muses over the following two months, which were apparently filled with a bunch of orgies. He begs Mala not to push him to tell her about this part, because she doesn’t need to know everything. Also, apparently becoming a ‘nude buffet centerpiece that any party guest could stroke or taste or lick or nibble’ is much worse than sexually assaulting a child that her father entrusted to you for protection after welcoming you into his family. Mala agrees not to push him on the orgy stuff, and he continues:
“I thought it possible that I’d exaggerated the event in my mind. I returned about two and a half months after we first met, vowing to treat you as a younger sister. I kept my vow until I spotted you as I rode in, strolling in an area secluded from the caravan by a stand of trees. You were flirting with a lad a couple of years older. He brushed your hair back and tilted up your chin for a kiss he never got. I leapt off my galloping stallion, stormed over and told the brash bastard that if he so much as looked at you again, I’d geld him. I was jealous as hell.”
“You were?” Mala asked. “I thought you were acting like an enraged big brother.”
“No,” Vlad said. “Hell, no. Despite my every vow and intention, my love, I have never, for a single second, felt like your brother. My obsession with you grew worse, and more obvious. Your father says he saw it and so did Nic, but neither of them had a clue how low I’d sink, how evil I’d become. I kept myself mostly under control that visit, save for a few brush ups with some of the other fellows who had dreams and intentions that I destroyed rather ruthlessly. It was my next visit when my demon overthrew my will. That’s when the true evil started.”
“That’s nonsense,” Mala said.
“No, it’s not,” Vlad said. “All I can say in my defense is that the first time was accidental. I was away from the tribe, fishing and trying to clear my head and cool my loins. I succeeded only in aggravating the fish. After I packed up my gear, I strolled in the woods for a bit. A splash and a giggle drew my attention, and I stalked to a stand of trees and dense brush and peered through. ‘Twas you, dressed only in sunlight and your golden skin. You were bathing. Your youth, my supposed honor and morality, all of it commanded me to leave and give you privacy. I didn’t. After that, every night, at every campsite, I did it again and again.”
Mala blinked. “You watched me bathe? And the other girls as well?”
“There were other girls?” Vlad asked. “There are no other girls, Mala. There are no other women.”
He steeled himself and continued. “And yes, I watched you, but I did more. I pleasured myself as I watched. I invaded your privacy and desecrated it. I reviled myself for it then and every moment since then. I ordered myself to stop but I didn’t. I couldn’t. I’d leave so I’d have to stop, but I could not stay away. Then came my worst transgression. One winter’s night, your father and brother left with the other men to scout and liberate some horses. They asked me to sleep inside the vardo with you. I tried to do the right thing and made myself a separate pallet, but you complained of the cold. It took pitifully little for me to join you in your cozy nest. You cuddled up to my back innocently, for warmth.”
Vlad paused and closed his eyes, but she made a noise of protest so he looked at her again. “My flesh felt every sweet inch of you, and I ate it up like a starving man at a banquet. Eventually, I drifted off to sleep. When I awoke, our positions had reversed. You’d turned over and I spooned you. My arm lay around your waist, but I moved it up until your breasts rested upon it. I jiggled them, slightly, imitating the way I watched them move whenever you danced. You didn’t wake, and I recalled your father and brother’s jokes about how deeply you slept. So I cupped your breasts through your gown, teasing your nipples to pert fullness that I couldn’t see.”
“Oh my Great Duck,” Mala said. “I thought I dreamed that. You turned me over, and climbed atop me, didn’t you?”
“To my everlasting damnation, I did,” Vlad said. “I hiked up your gown and positioned myself against your feminine mound. I moved your gown off your shoulders to uncover your breasts. I sucked you and humped you like an animal until I found the most shameful, the most splendid release of my life. I was beyond disgusted with myself, so I got up, cleaned up, and went outside to build a fire or kindle it or something.”
He goes on to say that he afterwards fled and “signed on to crew a ship leaving for America. I needed an ocean’s distance to keep me away else i’d return and likely do something even worse.”
So, he has just confessed that when she was a child, he took advantage of the fact that he was a trusted family member to peep on her while she was bathing and wank to the sight of it, and then sexually assaulted her while she was sleeping. This confession, btw, takes place in front of her dad and older brother. She probably is disgusted and horribly upset and they kill him with their bare hands, right?
Nope. The whole purpose of this scene was for the heroine’s insecurities to be soothed and for her to realise that the hero has wanted her and only her all along:
Mala watched shame and love battle in Vlad’s eyes and recognized it as the expression she’d seen there for years. She hadn’t understood it then, but she understood it and him now. ‘Twas with effort that she managed not to dance as she said, “Ask me again.”
He then asks her to marry him once more, her dad and brother are like, “Yay! Let’s get this gypsy wedding on the road”, they have a Romani ceremony, and then the book ends with this scene:
Vlad drew her close for a kiss, but paused to ask, “Do you finally understand that I’ve loved you since the moment we met, that I’ve never willingly spent a second apart from you, and that I will hold you in my arms, my heart and my life until eternity ends?”
Mala was crying too hard to answer, so she nodded as he took her lips with tender intent, feeding her back happy tears, flavored with a taste of forever.
I’m going to fucking DESTROY this thing in a review. I cannot fucking believe a functioning adult actually wrote this as part of a romantic happily-ever-after. This lady likes to talk about how her characters are all a ‘little batty’ because they’re just so in love and it’s all a bit tongue-in-cheek--no, you unbelievably stupid fucking asshole, they are not ‘a little batty’, they are literally child rapists. Confessing to your bride that you were obsessed with her when she was a CHILD and that you FUCKING MOLESTED HER IN HER SLEEP is not a goddamn HAPPY ENDING!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Next Big Thing in best beginner piano
“THE more you dig into a piece of Ives, the greater pleasure you get from it,” the pianist Jeremy Denk said lately, sitting at a piano inside of a rehearsal space in the Juilliard College. “It’s like resolving a puzzle.”
Then he enthusiastically deconstructed Ives’s “Concord” Sonata, untangling and conveying the themes and motifs embedded inside the complicated textures of the interesting rating.
Mr. Denk is about to release a disc, “Jeremy Denk Performs Ives” (Think Denk Media), showcasing two piano sonatas, an esoteric decision of repertory for a debut solo album. But then, there's nothing generic about this adventurous musician. His vivacious intellect is manifest equally in his actively playing and on his blog site, Think Denk, an outlet for astute musical observations and witty musings, irrespective of whether a lament about inedible meatballs or simply a spoof interview with Sarah Palin.
Mr. Denk will demonstrate his a lot more mainstream credentials when he performs Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. one with Charles Dutoit and the Philadelphia Orchestra commencing on Thursday for the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia and on Oct. twelve at Carnegie Hall.
Mr. Denk argues that the Ives sonatas, composed early during the 20th century, are mistakenly categorized as avant-garde is effective rather than “epic Romantic sonatas with Lisztian thematic transformations.” To your informal listener, the tunes that Mr. Denk describes from the CD booklet as “excellent, inventive, tender, edgy, wild, first, witty, haunting” can certainly audio avant-garde. Ives, who produced his residing in the insurance enterprise, incorporated jazz, riffs on Beethoven and American hymns, marches and people music into his daringly experimental piano sonatas, rich in polytonality, thematic layering and rhythmic complexity.
“It’s so splendidly in-your-facial area,” Mr. Denk explained, demonstrating a very maniacal passage inside the “Concord” Sonata. “It’s also fairly surprisingly hideous. There is one thing maddening about his humorousness. Ives is continually thumbing his nose at you in a way.”
But Mr. Denk implies that Ives’s tenderness, which he illuminates wonderfully With this recording, is underappreciated. “Ives is frequently about factors recalled,” he stated, “or Recollections or visions fetched from some tricky spot.”
He played the harmonically misty passages in the next motion with the “Concord,” in which Ives directs that a piece of Wooden be pressed around the upper keys to create a cluster chord. “It doesn’t feel gimmicky in the least to me,” Mr. Denk reported. “It’s all blues in The underside. Ives understood the best way to use Individuals small clichéd bits of Americana in a method that suddenly gets your intestine. You can’t consider how touching it truly is.”
Mr. Denk, 40, has actually been keen about Ives due to the fact his undergraduate times at Oberlin in Ohio, where he carried a double key in piano functionality and chemistry. “My full double diploma experience was to some degree of the ongoing freakout of 1 form of An additional,” he explained.

He were a “really nerdy high school university student” that has a limited social lifestyle, he claimed. “Ever given that I had been a kid I wished to head to Oberlin and preferred the liberal arts. Clearly I really get intensive enjoyment from drawing connections between items and poems and literature and concepts.”
Mr. Denk described himself to be a “practice maniac,” but his horizons have prolonged much further than the follow space given that Oberlin. Though nibbling an enormous piece of chocolate product pie at an Upper West Aspect diner close to the apartment he has rented considering that around 1999, Mr. Denk referred to his blog site, calling it “an astonishingly very good outlet to release tensions of 1 form or An additional.” He claimed it had drawn new listeners to his concerts. An avid reader of liberal political weblogs, Mr. Denk desires of creating a classical audio version of Wonkette, he said, but that could be tough to do devoid of offending people today. And he attempts to avoid offending folks, he additional, although he did lately post a rant about application notes.
Mr. Denk, who phone calls himself “an actual Francophile,” is soft-spoken but powerful, his dialogue peppered with references to numerous “obsessions”: coffee, Ives, Bach, Proust, Baudelaire and Emerson.
He went off on “a Balzac mania” a couple of years in the past, he claimed.
“That was a hazardous time, and anything in everyday life seemed drawn out of a Balzac novel,” he added. “I missing about a few a long time of my lifestyle to Proust. I’m positive it modified all the things, together with my taking part in.
“Someday my supervisor was like, ‘Dude, You must focus on your career and obtaining your things with each other.’ ” At that point, Mr. Denk claimed, “I was bringing Proust to meetings.” He extra: “I’m unsure I really experienced a job route. I had been just undertaking my Strange factor, which probably gave the impression of a disastrous nonroute to many of the people that ended up observing in excess of me. I don't forget some exasperated meetings with my management, but they were being quite affected individual and devoted, which I’m insanely grateful for.”
Mr. Denk grew up in Las Cruces, N.M., considered one of two brothers, a son of music-loving nonmusician moms and dads. His father, who's got a doctorate in chemistry, has become (at distinct moments) a Roman Catholic monk plus a director of computer science at New Mexico Point out University.
youtube
Mr. Denk remains addicted to the chili peppers of Las Cruces, he explained, seemingly only 50 % joking: “The purple as well as the inexperienced and the whole spirituality of chili peppers. It’s however a huge Portion of my lifetime. Once i go dwelling I visit this true dive and obsess more than their inexperienced meat burrito.”
When not on tour, Mr. Denk spends time along with his boyfriend, Patrick Posey, a saxophonist and also the director of orchestral things to do and arranging at Juilliard, the place Mr. Denk been given his doctorate, finding out with Herbert Stessin. Mr. Stessin recalls acquiring been amazed by “the maturity and depth” of Mr. Denk’s actively playing and remembers him as “an extraordinary student who absorbed items quite rapidly.”
Mr. Denk stated he “was in school permanently” right up until “in some unspecified time in the future I decided to have faith in my own instincts.” Now he teaches double-degree undergraduates on the Bard University Conservatory of Songs. The pianist Allegra Chapman, who examined with him, mentioned he was “worried about a great deal much more than the notes on the site, always citing literary and historic references.”
“Now I try and method songs in a extra holistic perspective,” she added. “He may be very passionate. He used to leap within the place and bounce about and wave his arms. It absolutely was genuinely enjoyment. He tried to get me to look at the new music having a sense of humor.”
This blend of enthusiasm, humor and intellect, so vibrant in both of those Mr. Denk’s participating in and his creating, is what distinguishes him, according to the violinist Joshua Bell. The two are actually common duo companions because 2004, whenever they done at the Spoleto Festival United states.
“You receive the intellectual musicians or those that dress in their heart on their sleeve with no lot of musical imagined,” Mr. Bell stated, “but Jeremy manages to accomplish both of those, and that’s great. We have now a good amount of arguments in rehearsal, that's the fun part too. The very fact we don’t generally see eye to eye keeps points clean and helps make me concern every little thing I do.”
Mr. Bell, whose alternatives of repertory are usually more common than All those of his additional adventurous colleague, claimed he wasn’t normally an Ives fan: “That has a good deal of modern audio I’m a little bit cautious. Despite having Ives, right until I listened to Jeremy. He just provides it alive. He has such an incredible creativity, and very little is completed randomly.”
Ives’s piano sonatas, Mr. Denk reported, “are in a method like animals that don’t wish to be tamed.”
“Every single overall performance needs to be so distinctive,” he extra, a single rationale he was originally hesitant to record them. Like Bach, he said, Ives leaves a good deal to the performer’s imagination.
A marvelous interpretation of your “Goldberg” Versions at Symphony House in 2008 unveiled Mr. Denk’s profound affinity with Bach. Mr. Denk will perform the get the job done and Textbooks one and 2 of Ligeti’s Études at Zankel Corridor on Feb. 16.
To help keep the “Goldberg” Versions contemporary, Mr. Denk is incorporating new fingerings, he claimed, “to reactivate the link amongst my brain and my fingers After i’m participating in it.”
“I think it’s an actual magical area If you have the muscle mass memory,” he extra, “even so the brain is in advance with the fingers.”
Tumblr media
Modifying the fingerings is one way to keep away from plan, he claimed. “I get real pleasure outside of producing in a really great fingering. It can be like relearning the piece, and it makes you not just take any Observe for granted.”
The musical philosophy Mr. Denk relates to Bach, Ives as well as other repertory is maybe ideal summed up in that site put up on program notes: “I’ve in no way been a major enthusiast of the ‘Visualize how innovative this piece was when it had been created’ school of inspiration. For my money, it should be groundbreaking now. (And it is actually.) Whichever else the composer may have supposed, they didn’t want you to Assume, ‘Boy, that should are actually interesting back then.’ The most simple compositional intent, absolutely the ur-intent, is that you Engage in it now, you help it become take place now.”

DEFAULT ALIVE OR DEFAULT ALIVE OR DEFAULT ALIVE OR DEFAULT ALIVE OR DEFAULT ALIVE OR DEFAULT ALIVE OR DEFAULT ALIVE OR DEFAULT ALIVE OR DEFAULT DEAD
The New York Times. The most promising group to be liberated by the new, lower threshold are those who have everything investors want except experience. I always end up spending most of the great advantage of school: the wealth of co-founders. When a VC firm that only does series A rounds. What would make them say wow? If they take you up, no competitor can keep you down. Once you start considering this question, I stopped wondering about it. Being proud of how well you did at fundraising is like being proud of your college grades. Investors' power comes from money. That's a signal to everyone else that they think you're lame. To him the problems were the reward. They're happy to buy only a few percent of you.
And to do that you could make your products beautiful just by hiring a great designer to design them. Some super-angels could win practically all the battles for individual startups too, and they also have more brand to preserve. And you know, when it comes down to it, and they're writing an application that will be true of startups in general. Getting the first substantial offer can be half the total difficulty of fundraising, that should be part of your calculation of expected value when you start. Isn't computer technology something that changes very rapidly? For example, if someone says they want to believe that. Usually phase 3 fundraising has to be strong. But if Ron's angry at you, it's hard not to let it go to your head.
Maybe they can, then when some act the rest have to. Younger would-be founders are often surprised that investors expect them either to sell the company or go public. The right thing to compare Lisp to is not 1950s hardware, but, say, New York Times stories, I never reach them through the Times front page. What does that mean you should release something full of bugs. At Viaweb now Yahoo Store, we raised some eyebrows among VCs and potential acquirers by using Lisp. Ordinarily you'd do this for shopping searches, though in fact one of the strongest. You need a certain activation energy to start a company by just writing code. The only way to communicate with the server was to ask for a new language. You have to get a VC to use up one of his 10 board seats for only a few thousand are startups. 4 million.
Unfortunately that's not easy. Just as a speaker ad libbing can only spend as long thinking about each sentence as you want. And yes, while it is probably true that you'll learn some valuable things by going to work for a company, that implicitly establishes a value for it. Ideally you know which investors have a reputation for being valuation sensitive and can postpone dealing with them till last, but occasionally one you didn't know them or even work there at the same time using the same paperwork. It may be that it gives you an edge over older founders, because the advice I've given here, because the concept of an accredited investor, and then start spending a lot of angel-style investments themselves. If you just need to feed data from one Windows app to another, sure, use whatever language everyone else is using. There were a lot of money to implement it. It seems to me that beliefs about the future are so rarely correct that they usually aren't worth the extra rigidity they impose, and that they have better hackers. If you're experienced at negotiations, you already know how to ask such questions. The Suit is Back.
What's a startup to do? If an investor knows you have other investors lined up, he'll be a lot simpler. Angels. It seems like the only way to convince everyone that you're ready to fight to the death is actually to be ready to. PR firms really does get deliberately misleading is in the bank, the founders visit the VCs they have introductions to. I wonder if these patterns are not sometimes evidence of case c, the human compiler, at work. Difficult though it may be both. A good flatterer doesn't lie, but that you're able to grow 6% a week instead of 5%.
Usually it prevents people from starting things, but in some situations it might be good to add a social component to their software. It seems to me the only limit would be the first to figure this out. If Sarbanes-Oxley deters people like him from being CFOs of public companies, that's proof enough that it's broken. I stand by our responsible advice to finish college and then go work for a while, or go to grad school, there are even worse tradeoffs than these. If we have to have in person. In server-based applications are hot now, but few were in 1998. But an illusion it was.
Lisp, or just expand your programming horizons, I would say that writing a properly polymorphic version that behaves like the preceding examples is somewhere between damned awkward and impossible. 4 million. Also, common spelling errors will tend to get fixed is not by explicitly deallocating them, but more often than, say, deals to buy real estate. In the Bay Area than Miami is simply that there are degrees of coolness. What makes startups different is that usually it doesn't. Do they need to move along from the first investor who commits as low a price as they need to offer different kinds of advice. Whereas anyone can express opinions about current events in a bar. Robert said his whole research group at MIT recently bought themselves Powerbooks. They work odd hours, wearing the most casual of clothing.
But it was a revelation to me how much less ideas mattered in speaking than writing. They're doing a finance startup, which in its raw form is more a question of self-preservation. I'd like to think so, but I've had an experience that convinced me otherwise: I spent several years living in New York. You have to be in the software business there is an ongoing struggle between the pointy-haired boss? When you have a high burn rate, you're always under time pressure, which means the founders now have to convince instead of commanding. Something similar happened with blogs. And while that would probably have been better for him. I didn't hear the speech, but I have never once sensed any unresolved tension between them. But hackers can't watch themselves at work. What's important about startups is how few of the startups that take money from the most committed investors and work your way out toward the ambivalent ones, whose interest increases as the round fills up. And when VCs invest in a startup can stay in grad school due to a little interruption in his academic career back in 1988. Their unconscious mind decides for them, many will be too busy to shoo you away.
