My ‘Desert KIng’ fig tree was so productive that I tried dehydrating figs for the first time. It took 14 hours but the results are yummy!

y’all i decided to make onion powder bc i’m running out and i haven’t seen the big bottle in the grocery store and i followed a video. the video said i could make in the oven at a low temp for a couple of hours but i did not consider the smell …. 👃i’m literally abt to pass away from the nausea… like my whole house smells like onions… i’m on my bed smelling gum bc it’s minty and mint helps with nausea and bro… it s literally only been an hour and it’s this bad… genuinely going to pass away like i can’t do this .. MIND YOU THE ONIONS LOOK YHE SAME AS WHRN I PUT THEM IN… truly wish i had a dehydrator bc this smell is too much… how am i supposed to do 5 more hours of this… i even have the fan on and 3 candles on but still… the smell of onions is killing me..

5 Ways to Be Self-Sufficient in 2024
Hey y'all! Let's talk about Self-Sufficiency! What are you doing in 2024?
It can be easy to think…if I had acres of land, I could be self-sufficient. The reality is that you don’t need acres of land, flocks of chickens, and herds of cattle to become more self-reliant. Whether you live in a tiny apartment with or without a balcony, a house on a small lot or have a little bit of land, it’s possible to start your journey to self-sufficiency wherever you’re at. So, if…

PSA: i keep seeing posts about staying cool in extreme heat that include advice like "gatorade is bad actually!" and "don't drink fruit juice it'll just dehydrate you!" and neither of these are true!
regarding fruit juice: there's apparently a misconception that Any Sugar At All will dehydrate you, and that's simply not true. yes, sugar will make you pee more when consumed in large amounts, but 1) the natural sugar in fruits won't do this to you 2) great news! a lot of fruit juices exist without any added sugar in them! 3) honestly even having a glass of the fruit juice with added sugar won't completely dehydrate you as long as you're also drinking water throughout the day. if its hot you deserve a cold treat of a drink!!! can't go wrong with fruit juice!!!
regarding gatorade: maybe this isn't an every day drink, but guess what: if it's 110F/40C or hotter outside, and you don't have AC, or you're moving around a lot outside of the AC, and you're sweating buckets: that's when you drink a gatorade.
gatorade exists to replenish all the electrolytes (salt) and glucose (sugar) that you sweat out. YES it is meant for athletes to drink during intensive work outs and not necessarily for people who aren't doing that kind of exercise. BUT GUESS WHAT! when you're sweating buckets because you had to walk to the bus in extreme heat, that's intensive exercise. please feel free to drink a gatorade after that! that's its intended use case!!!!
no: neither of these drinks should be a total replacement for water. but drinking a lot of water and then treating yourself to a fruit juice with lunch is a good idea!!! drinking a gatorade becuase you just had to walk for 20 minutes in the heat is a good idea!!!
Please Stop Spreading Misinformation About Drinks!!! It's fine if you drink things that aren't water!!!! Yes you should probably always be drinking water but drinking something else As Well isn't going to hurt you!!!! okay!!!! its fine!!!!!!
honestly so long as you are consistently getting Any (non-alcoholic) fluids in you, you're doing great!!!!!! okay!!!! i love you stay safe <3

Dehydrated Onions
When the last of our Red of Florence onions got processed, I set up three 9×13 baking sheets in the oven to dehydrate some. When those were done, I took the one bag of onions I kept out of the freezer, because it had a pinhole in it somewhere, and filled another baking sheet to dehydrate. This is what those 4 trays of onions got us. When level on the counter, the top is almost exactly between…

Behold my favourite pumpkinish thing I've ever carved! It was a small heritage pumpkin in green, and I did all swirly Van Gogh-ish swoops and spirals all around it, and it was cute.

Then I dehydrated it, and put a tinfoil ball in to try and keep it from completely collapsing and it went a weird shape but I still liked it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then I tried it with another tealight and it was so cute but also it's very dry now because dehydrated and so I've scorched it but also I think it looks extra cool.

10/10 would do again.

Weekend roundup! 13 jars of cowboy candy, a huge batch of dehydrated peppers filled with a quart jar and made thermos yogurt. I have tons of dry milk so I might as well make yogurt and use in place of sour cream, cream cheese and yogurt!

Homemade Tomato Powder
So I don’t know about you guys, but when I made a big pile of tomato soup for canning, I had a ton of tomato skins left over. I paid good money for those tomatoes (my garden gave me some, but not nearly enough for homemade tomato soup all winter), so I squinted at them and went “okay, what can I do with these?”
One of my Italian cookbooks (My Calabria, by Rosetta Costantino) had a mention in it of drying pepper skins to grind for peperoncino for the table. Obviously tomatoes aren’t peppers, and I’m not likely to just randomly sprinkle tomato powder on —
Ha, who am I fooling? Maybe I will. We like tomatoes around here! But anyway, I spread the skins out on my dehydrator, at 135° Freedom Units / 57° Confusing Units, and let them go about 8 hours until they were nice and crispy, then ground them up in my spice grinder.

The San Marzano is very definitely a classic tomato sauce flavor. Saucy Mary is from the Dwarf Tomato Project — I’ll talk about that at some point — and they are sauce tomatoes that are green when ripe. That one is sprightly and a bit more acidic. I like both very much.
“Okay, Ji,” you say, “but what are you going to do with tomato powder? Why add on extra steps when you could have just tossed them into the compost and fed the garden?” Well, I am stubborn about using as much as I can, and I like good food. So I’ll probably use these as flavor boosters for things that could use an extra punch of tomato flavor — sauces, soups, maybe make a compound butter to put on potatoes or fish, definitely put some in my salad dressing from time to time. Maybe even sneak some into my garlic bread — boy, it’s been a while since I’ve made garlic bread. I should do that.

Eating healthy makes a difference!
Just found out yesterday when I weighed myself that I am now at the size I was before my 2nd child. That’s an accomplishment. Eating healthy does make a difference. Moving right along…. #canning, #dehydrating, #pressurecooking,

This is attention to details man
Ganon holds a bow straight while Link holds it at an angle.
Ganon also draws the bow like a samurai, (since this Ganon is more samurai like) he positions/aim the bow then draws.
(Not shown here) Even if Link uses a long bow like Ganon he will still aim at an angle since he is a soldier. He positions/aim the bow and draws at the same time.
The bow Ganon uses will recoil meaning this is a heavy bow. (They didnt need to add that detail in, but they did man)

If you are buying fruits and veg from green grocer/ grocery warehouse to do some preserving, make sure they are not ‘coated’. There are several ways to remove some of it (short of removing all peels). You really need to remove this coating for a healthier food whether fresh or preserving. Watch how you wash the fruit or veg if you plan to ferment as some washes will reduce/prohibit fermentation,
