HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO AL JARDINE: The Wayback Machine lands on Summer 1981: I was flying from San Francisco to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to visit family and friends. While changing planes in Pittsburgh, imagine my surprise to see The Beach Boys entourage (minus Carl Wilson, who wasn’t on that tour) waiting at the gate, headed to Harrisburg for a run-off gig. I conversed with Brian Wilson, Bruce Johnston, Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Dennis Wilson. During the flight, they let me pick their brains about songs, studio craft, songwriting, etc.—my opener was to talk about “Celebrate the News.” Al was very interested in the landscape as we looked out the windows. It occurred to me to compare Appalachia to Big Sur but my mind drifted… 

Years later, back in California, I was demo’ing on the keyboard, thinking I was homesick for my native PA. Out of nowhere the line “I Wanna Be-in Pennsylvania” flew into my head, modeled after tribute songs to American places made by The Beach Boys. The final take was expertly mixed by Rusty Richards (Julie Miller, Brian Wilson) and features guest vocals by Mike Roe (The 77s). Meanwhile, Happy Birthday Al, and thank you for your years of bringing musical joy to the world.

Tonight I'm trying to find a place of inner peace by listening to my all time favorite Beach Boys adjacent release, Dennis Wilson's incredible solo album "Pacific Ocean Blue". Dennis' story is sad throughout and all you need is a quick google search, a couple of tall glasses of boxed wine, and you can find yourself in tears when you think about his Californian blend of raw musical talent, endless good intentions, and ultimate sad, raw, untimely death by drowning. He accidentally welcomed the Manson family into the world of starlets and rockstars and never lived it down, hell he almost got killed by them himself. He struggled with all sorts of demons like so many of the most talented artists tend to, but during his relatively short time on this mortal coil, he wrote one of the prettiest albums on our shelves. If you want to dip your toe, my two favorite beginner tracks are "River Song" as it is indicative of the whole Dennis Wilson vibe...kind of a more blue collar-y, down-home smoothed out Beach Boys, and "Moonshine", a classic heartbreak song that doesn't really follow any of the rules of a heartbreak song (and honestly includes some sad, distant whispers of the Beach Boys shtick in the vocal harmonies and background vocals). He had partied so hard by this point that the trademark saccharine sweetness of his voice was now a gravely baritone but it made his telling of a sad story all the more believable. This album is a cult classic and there is a real reason why. Cleaning unused record photos out of my phone: Go West’s biggest US hit, “King of Wishful Thinking,” never had it’s 12” remix released here. After years of wondering what the remix sounded like, I found a European copy on Discogs cheap enough to rationalize ordering it—and found out why: It’s boring. It’s a shame they couldn’t bring back Julian Mendelssohn, who did all those epic-sounding remixes from their first album; no doubt he would have knocked it out of the park.

Lee Vogt’s SONG OF THE WEEK: “Come Along Side of Me” https://leevogt.bandcamp.com/track/come-along-side-of-me  —Lee wrote, “When I heard that my first ‘deep’ girlfriend had died, that night I wrote this song. coming from that place in my heart that has never stopped loving her.”

Producer-musician Johnny J. Blair wrote, “This song is quietly compelling, reminding me of Dennis Wilson’s orchestral romance songs of the early 70s (think side 2 of the CARL & THE PASSIONS Beach Boys album). I’ve had a great time working with Lee, a singer-songwriter who dashes off biographical, heartfelt love songs influenced by the confessionals of Leonard Cohen, Randy Newman, Nilsson, and John Stewart. We recorded this one at Jim Helman’s studio in Berkeley CA.”

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock [NEW 1978 Edition] - The Beach Boys. Formed 1961 in L.A. by Wilson brothers Carl and Dennis, and compositional genius Brian, from the middle-class district of Hawthorne, CA. They released 11 albums up through 1965. But, slowly however, #thebeachboys and their creative mastermind had begun to drift apart. While group toured world, Brian started hanging out with one #vandykeparks , later to write lyrics, started dropping acid and went thru a period of attempting to disown his musical past.
