Chapter 2: master of others
“So leave me alone, you ought to be proud that I’m getting good marks.”
Elliot Smith, “Needle in the Hay”
One thinks himself the master of others, and still remains a greater slave than they.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau, The Social Contract
Coriolanus pulled at the neck of his red cashmere sweater, unsure how he could possibly feel this warm in the laboratory. He knew that the thermostat was set to a bone-chilling sixty three degrees because he’d set it himself. Yet here he was, sweating and feverish, unable to regulate his own body temperature, to control himself. How fitting.
It had taken weeks before Dr. Volumnia Gaul had allowed Coriolanus to be left to his own devices in the research facility, continuously commenting on his stint with her beloved rainbow snakes. This embarrassed Coriolanus greatly and he fell silent at the mention of it, accepting the rightful criticism. He hadn’t been trying to spite the Capitol in the action. He was just trying to save Lucy Gray, because that was all that he thought about then, but that was the shame in it, wasn’t it? How quickly and wholly he had been willing to throw aside his heritage for her, how easily she made him forget the expectations of his last name. Strategically placing his father’s handkerchief in the tank had come to him as easily as breathing. Desperately, Coriolanus had attempted to speak words of regret on the matter, but the shapes of such statements couldn’t form on his lips - the very lips that were born into importance the second they met hers. He didn’t regret any of it. He wanted to, but he couldn’t find that feeling.
He’d poisoned Dean Casca Highbottom and didn’t regret that either. Coriolanus found his emerging perspective on murder and death troubling but natural. He refused to reject a sense that came this easily, which was the very trouble with Lucy Gray Baird. He had no energy to waste on attempting to unlearn what was so deeply ingrained within him. This is all he was anymore - hatred and her.
Today, he’d be meeting with Dr. Gaul to discuss the framework of an idea he’d conjured to encourage the commitment of the districts to the Games. Just as there’d been an incentive for the mentors to win the year prior, Coriolanus had confidence in the offering of a prize to winning Districts, one greater than the life of the victorious tribute. He’d toyed with the concept of extra provisions, a monetary reward for the winner and his/her family, or a tour through the districts sporting the victor as an elongated reminder. His most verbose suggestion was a draft of a Victor’s Village on the outskirts of each District, a series of fine homes and privacy designated solely for winners. Comprehensively, Coriolanus was aiming to create a reason for those in the Districts to look forward to the games - hope in the midst of despair. Hope, he’d concluded, was the mental equivalence of wrapping your hands around someone’s neck and releasing just as their eyes rolled back. Gasping, dopamine would flood through the victim’s body, replacing prior fear and desperation, because at least the perpetrator didn’t go through with it. They didn’t finish the deal, they only came close. And here came the second chance, the opportunity to assess all that individual had taken for granted before they tasted death. You could do anything with that feeling, with that opportunity to edge a person. They’d be at your mercy and your control - suddenly, you were no longer another human, but their maker and ender simultaneously, a God with the choices in his silver-ringed hands. Coriolanus relished in the idea, warmth gathering in his lower abdomen when he imagined how powerful that moment would feel. It made him wish to perfect the exact amount of poison required to only nearly, not fully, sicken someone to the brink of their death. He could lean down to meet them on the floor, face to face on the tile. Not feeling real good, are you? He’d whisper, reaching out to touch their warm cheek, the veins pulsating on their forehead. Is there anything you want to tell me? Or do you want to drink more?
Today, Coriolanus was hoping to make requests of his own. Typically, he was the one at the beck and call of Dr. Gaul, as was expected of an internship position. He’d excelled and would continue to, but he wanted to gain capital. He knew Dr. Gaul could give him what he wanted, even if it was difficult, and perhaps it wouldn’t. Little seemed to phase her. She was incredibly calculated, and Coriolanus himself had seen her as evil, which she was. It was a necessary evil, he’d come to recognize, and necessary was his demand.
Dr. Gaul strolled into the wing of the laboratory that he occupied two hours after he’d arrived, donning one of her customary whimsical garments. Coriolanus’ stomach still turned at the sight of her, as it always had. But she was a good teacher, a great one even, and her power couldn’t be denied. Coriolanus believed in the notion that those who couldn’t be beaten should be joined, but he would surpass her eventually. He already hoped she felt insecurity at the amount of ideas she’d adopted of his - here he was, nearly nineteen only, preparing for the second Games that he’d carried a heavy influence in. The tables would turn eventually. Snow lands on top.
“Good morning,” Dr. Gauld drawled, eyeing the meticulously written notes laying in front of Coriolanus. He’d once seen the drawers in her private office chalkful with the documents he’d bestowed her with. Her prodigy - a mind that couldn’t be wasted in the Districts. He was thankful for that, at least, that her belief in him had brought him back to the Capitol. Not that it wasn’t rightful. He was fantastic at what he did and he knew that. Everything was falling into place. Almost.
Dr. Gaul’s hands, draped in red gloves, began to reach for the page laying on top, one adorned with mock sketches of a Victor’s Village mansion. Coriolanus swiftly moved the papers away from her, a mechanism that took her by shock. “Feisty this morning, aren’t you, rabbit?” She wasn’t angry, yet - just curious.
Coriolanus eyed the sterile silver clock on the opposite wall. “It’s afternoon,” he said gruffly, running his fingers along the top of the stapled document. His left index finger caught on the left edge of the stack, but he didn’t mind the feeling. He let the finger rest there, blood soaking the outer edges and moving toward his perfect handwriting. “I have a favor to ask. It’s not small.”
There was an open seat across from Coriolanus, but Dr. Gaul didn’t take it. She brought her hands together, resting them on the upper side of the chair and leaning forward. On occasions, she sounded like a snake herself, hissing as she spoke. “And what may that be?”
Coriolanus was not intimidated by her, but more so by the gravity of his request. He wasn’t sure what had compelled today to be the day he’d finally mention it, as the thought wasn’t new. He’d thought about asking for Lucy Gray Baird every day since the last he saw her. He would do anything for her to be owed to him, and wasn’t she anyway? She was his. His in the Capitol, his in Twelve, his anywhere. Perhaps it was the loss of Grandma’am, another loose end lost to wherever they go, somewhere beside Sejanus. The trees in his life were being cut down, and hopefully that would prove the forest Lucy Gray was hiding in to be of greater clarity. Find her.
He was racking his brain for the best way to say it, hoping to frame it in an academic way, a manner that convinced Dr. Gaul that the choice would serve as much benefit to her as it would him. Dr. Gaul interrupted his train of thought with an empty condolence. “I’m sorry about your grandmother. She was lovely, I presume.”
Coriolanus met her eyes, another one of her snakelike features. Perhaps he would play the wounded card, the mourning boy. “My sorrows have been immense. I’m lonely, as of late.”
Dr. Gaul erupted into laughter at this, startling Coriolanus. “You stupid, stupid boy. What did I say about lying to me? You take me for a fool, acting as though I haven’t been waiting for the day you’d ask this question.”
Coriolanus’ cheeks burned red, feeling warm again. Were his feelings that clear? He’d thought the opposite, that he was the picture of self-sufficiency. He was immediately self-conscious at the prospect of his infatuation being so detectable, whether the feeling be true or not. And it was, God , it was. Could everyone see him as Dr. Gaul could, or was she just wiser?
“You don’t give a damn about your grandmother, dumb child,” Dr. Gaul practically spit at him, moving quickly to yank his document from his grasps. In his anxiety, he’d begun clutching the papers as though they were a lifeline. The intensity of Dr. Gaul’s ripping motion caused more paper cuts, Coriolanus crying out in pain as the palms of his hands bled a deeper red. He was already mortified beyond understanding, so the begging started.
“Please,” he gasped, falling to the ground like a peasant yearning for a penny. His chair skidded behind, turning on its side. The metal hitting the resin flooring resulted in a loud clang, a sound that echoed throughout the emptiness of the laboratory. “Please, Dr. Gaul. I’m losing my wit, my motivation, my mind. I can’t be the student you want me to be for much longer.”
Dr. Gaul seemed secondarily embarrassed at his dramatics, and equally unimpressed. “Say what you want in plain English then, Coriolanus.”
On his knees, he looked up to see her face, beginning to seethe with anger. Of course she was going to make him spell it out pathetically, the exact opposite of what he’d wanted her to do. He’d hoped to turn it into a business arrangement rather than a show of pity, but esteem seemed to be lost already. “Don't you have any respect for me?” He yelled through gritted teeth.
“Have some respect for yourself.” Dr. Gaul was unmoving.
“I. Want. Lucy. Gray. Baird.”
More laughter, chastising laughter. “Dumb child,” she repeated.
“A game of repetition, huh? Then I will say it again. I cannot be the student you need without her.”
“And what if you cannot be the student I need with her? Don’t you see how distracted you’d be with that little songbird in your bedroom?”
Coriolanus’ heart drummed at the mention of his room, of her, of the picture being painted, feeling indescribably put down by her insinuation. “What are you saying?”
“You think you know love,” Dr. Gaul tsked, shifting the papers she held to her left arm and placing her right hand on her heart. “You think you know what’s in here, how that feels. You don’t have much there, Coriolanus. Naive, and it’s known that the two of you didn’t sleep together.”
A switch flipped, forcing Coriolanus to his feet. What on earth? Known by whom? He couldn’t believe that the matter of his private life, of his virginity, was something to ‘know’, another Coriolanus-shaped topic for Capitol officials to analyze. “And that's a commonplace discussion?’
“It was a commonplace concern, actually. Casca was convinced you’d close that ground with her before the Games even started and resultantly lose interest in mentoring her. This was a substantial anxiety, as the Capitol had fallen for her themselves at that point. She needed a mentor who would invest everything in her to make the Capitol citizen investments worth their time. Living long enough for people to be entertained by her was paramount.”
“And what do you think I did?” Coriolanus was counting the hours of sleep he’d lost watching her, worrying himself sick about her wellbeing. It was the only relevance in his life then and now, and that wasn’t because he hadn’t slept with her. How could it be? It was deeper, it had to be, he knew it. He remembered it all, was even wearing the memories out from how often he ran through them. Kissing until his lips bled, the promise of being written in the stars, the way her eyes were the color of devotion. Even in his most violent moments, when rage distorted her face in his mind, when he imagined how she’d feel cold and lifeless before him, a bullet wound he gave her dyeing the color of her dress, he loved her. He loved her so much it sickened him. “What type of mentor do you think I was?”
“A teenage one sick with want,” Dr. Gaul scolded. “Simply desire, my boy.”
“Then kill me,” Coriolanus said plainly, manipulatively. She couldn’t, not his brain, not his words. She would’ve done it by then if she had the means to, what with all his crimes. He was her star pupil and the future of the Games.
Dr. Gaul scoffed, but said nothing.
“Give me her or I. Want. You. To. Kill. Me.”
Dr. Gaul continued her streak of silence, blinking at him as though he’d relent.
“Hang me in front of everyone, I don’t care. I’ve gone mad at the possibility of not having what’s rightfully mine.”
“Do you not understand the difference between obsession and love?” Dr. Gaul spoke the words slowly, a tone softer than he’d heard her use before.
“Assign it what you will,” Coriolanus responded, feeling he was somehow on the precipice of gaining leverage. “Call it how you want it and put it on a flag beside me. Write it on my grave.”
Dr. Gaul and Coriolanus settled into a battle fought by their eyes. They both knew, to Coriolanus’ advantage, that the greatest but inevitable mistake the Capitol had made was granting Coriolanus his pardon and giving him the lifepath he wanted after all he’d done. They’d rewarded everything they claimed not to, because that was the true way of the Capitol. His treason and self-serving behaviors were wrong and identical to those of anyone who’d ever served the Capitol well, for it was a self-serving nation, a self-serving city. Now, Coriolanus knew his power. He knew the room he had to pack away seemingly unforgivable acts, to cheat, to kill. He was Capitol, through and through, and they couldn’t hate him for it. They could hardly even punish him, for he was their creation, a product they’d designed that held great intellect and innovation.
“What’s in it for me?” Dr. Gaul finally asked.
This part of the conversation was the only Coriolanus had prepared for - the business plan. “She will be at your service just as mine. The Districts love her, trust her, even. She will perform at both the Bells’ nightclub, garnering income in the local economy, but also at any Capitol event, and especially those associated with the Games. It will garner views like no other, reminding the Districts that if a girl from Twelve can win, anything can happen. They’ll gain hope and the false perception of control - of a chance. They don’t know what I did to make her win, they just know she won, and they’ll see her in Capitol dresses, living a life she would have never had back home,” Coriolanus laughed at the next thought, bolstering confidence to support his perspective. “I’d be surprised if tributes don’t start volunteering just for the chance to be the next Lucy Gray.”
He knew it was a risk. Dr. Gaul detested the 10th Hunger Games and had even largely erased it. Lucy Gray Baird was a reminder of them, but a necessary one - a necessary evil - to sway the opinion of the common folk, the lowly Districts. “Give me her,” he pleaded, his voice almost a whisper. “I know you can find her. Bring her to me.”
Dr. Gaul turned away before responding, likely conveying an expression of defeat that she didn’t want him to see. “You’ll have your way in time. Now, though, you are mine just as she’s yours. You will have no autonomy over the time you are to spend dedicated to your work. If you or she fails me, I will kill you both, and you will watch her die first slowly.” Coriolanus could hardly hear what she was saying, lost in the satisfaction of his way, the only way that mattered.
As Dr. Gaul began to walk away, documents in hand, she called one final thing behind her. “Your father would be disgusted at the notion of District offspring, should you know. Don’t think this is some fantasy. You and I are one in the same - unlovable.”
Coriolanus wondered if she was right, if his fate was similar, if he’d end up withered, ugly and unlovable at the hands of his choices. Selfishly and in conceit, he couldn’t imagine it, especially not with this prospect - the return of Lucy Gray. Coriolanus had been recognized for his appearance since birth - his white blonde hair that had recently grown back into his signature curls, the blinding brightness of his pale blue eyes. He knew that many of his female peers at the University wanted him and detested the way they’d stare up at him, desperately hoping to be found attractive. He’d found none of the girls in the Capitol to be worth much, and this had been true both before and after her. All he wanted, all he'd soon have.
Even his father had once acknowledged Coriolanus’ beauty, perhaps only to recognize their shared characteristics. “A beautiful babe, you are,” Crassus Snow would murmur to his small son. “Hopefully one day you’re more than just that.”
He settled back into his chair, the white sides of it printed by his bloodied hands. In time. In time. She would be his again.
In time.

I saw Crimson Peak on your list and got excited because Charlie Hunnam's character often gets overlooked! I wonder if you'd have some little fluff about him (fall/gothic aesthetics would be most welcome)
I'm so glad to find another Alan fan! He's really an underrated character in the film. I'm a little brain dead due to some health issue flare ups at the moment, so hopefully a list of headcanons is okay:
Alan loves your spooky/gothic aesthetic when it comes to your clothes. Even though other people thought it made you stick out like a sore thumb, it was one of the things that drew him to you in the first place.
When fall rolls around, he 100% helps you go all out with the decorations and proudly wears matching cozy sweaters with you (were sweaters a thing in his time period? Not sure, but we're gonna roll with it).
I'm not 100% sure when Halloween became close to the thing it is now, but it's my fav holiday, so again, we're gonna roll with it. He loves watching you put so much care and love into either choosing or making a costume and loves to match you once the holiday approaches. He'll help you dress up the outside of your house or porch to draw trick or treaters, dresses up with you, and loves helping you pass out candy. In between trick or treaters, he's so happy to just sit on the porch and talk to you.
If you'd rather throw a costume party, he's completely on board for that too. He's helping you hang the decorations that go up high and insists on lifting anything heavy for you. If you're a handmade decoration/costume kind of person, he's showering your work in compliments and will be over the moon if you make something for him.
Speaking of costumes, he lets you go all out on any spooky facepaint/makeup that will complete his look.
He loves taking fall walks with you and thinks it's adorable when you purposely walk on the fallen leaves to get that satisfying crunch and will do it with you. Anyone watching might think you two are being childish, but you're too busy having fun crouching leaves and giggling with him.
He's always making sure you bundle up enough - he is a doctor after all and wouldn't want you to catch a cold. But of course if you do, he's there to the rescue and insists on taking expert care of you. If you don't have or didn't bring a good enough coat, he'll offer up his (never mind the fact that he's risking a cold himself; "don't worry, I'm a doctor, I'll nurse myself back to health in no time").
He becomes an expert hot chocolate/tea/coffee (whatever your preference is) maker just for you and will make the coziest set up by the fireplace with hot drinks, blankets, and whatever books/hobbies you two enjoy together.
I can totally see him also being the type to plant some apple trees in his backyard pre-relationship specifically so he can learn to make cider and bring it to you as a way to impress you.
If you know how to knit or crochet and make him some gloves or a sweater for the incoming cold season, he gives you the biggest puppy eyes when you give them to him. He'll treat them like gold and hardly ever has them away from his person.
He never knew much about the gothic aesthetic before he met you, but is fascinated by it once you introduce it to him - especially if he visits your house and it's designed/decorated in that style - and thinks it's gorgeous.
If he sees something in a shop that he thinks you'd like that would match your love of all things fall and/or goth, he'll buy it for you without hesitation and be so cute and bashful about giving it to you.
He won't hear a word if anyone tries to insult your style and reminds you he thinks you're the most gorgeous person on the planet.

Red is the Color of Our lives (and Red is the Color of Our Blood) pt1.
Heyyy I took a little break for a couple of days, and HEYYY MY BIRTHDAY WAS YESTERDAY YEAHHHH
ANYHOW-
I hope everyone's having a good day and enjoys this entrance to our little story (this one's gonna be probably a 1-4 part series, maybe longer or maybe shorter
Warnings: foul language and mentions of blood
You've never been much of a fighter as a kid. You got your way to the military and to where you were now, all on your lonesome.
Having been in 141, grouped In after your first four years of service by Laswell and Price themselves. You wanted to be a medic, but you soon found that a sniper fit in your hands better.
And yet here you were, 3 years later, striking your feet harshly on the tread mill in the gym room as you sprinted forward, huffing and puffing as sweat slicked your body. And there stood Ghost timing and pulling you through this already hour long "light cardio" as he called it of sprints. And then, with one loud clap and a whitlse followed by Soaps voice breaking through the little bubble you and Ghost had built at the moment..."DAMN LOOKING GOOD Y/N" and then, with a nod from Simon, you began to slow before grabbing the sides of the treadmill to help your body slow to a jog, then a brisk pace before a stop.
Turning over your shoulder with a heavy breath, you watched soap motion you two to walk over. The Swedish man stood at the entrance of the workout facility, not moving, only watching us with a shit eating grin crossing his face. Before you and Ghost had walked side by side toward him, you were only a measly 5'9 "compared to these two. But, with their height, you make up for speed. And then, as soon as you stopped, giving Soap a wave before he spoke.
"Alrighty boys, we got a new member joining us today. He's been updated on missions and has proved to be a good addition to the team. He's already been introduced to everyone else, but you two. König. If you would step out of the dark please?"
And with a step to the side, an utterly massive mountain of a man steppes out of the dark, his head ducking beneath the door Frame as he stood over you three. And you watched him. Before your gaze snapped over to Soap as he spoke, both and you Ghost somehow simultaneously crossing your arms as you listened.
"This is Ghost, one of our main powerhouses to the team, big ol toughy eh? And this here is our sniper, Y/N, sneaky bastard. Well, I'll let you tow get back to it-"
"We just finished,actually."
Simon's voice sounded rougher, harsher. He was distant with even mentioning Konigs massive structure.
And then he stormed off.
"Exscuse him Kõnig, he's just grumpy today. But, welcome to 141." And then he watched his gaze lock to yours. And you found his green eyes entrancing, sharp, like a double-edged sword.
You then watched as he quickly tore his gaze from yours before you excused yourself and went on auto-pilot as you rushed into the main quarters and then into your room and grabbed something from the bag next to your cot. Yes, you did laundry daily, and yes, you took the time every day to repack everything in your pack. But, it was a habit, especially after living your life out of a pack and always being on the move, a thing trained to always be ready to be on the go, to need to move from place to place. And you knew you had to quickly shower and get your clothes washed due to the mission tomorrow morning that hung over your shoulder. All you had to do was scope and snipe out coverage if needed and take out people when needed while the boys went in and extracted the info needed and destroying the base, courtesy of Laswell and her best of the best bomb makers designing little things that go" boom".
In your hands were sweats, socks, boxers, and a plain sweater. Your boots now kicked next to your cot as you practically ran to the bathroom. And welcomed yourself to the cold air before encouragingly entering the warm shower, and you almost scrubbed your skin raw. Knowing that this could be the last shower you take in God only knows how long due to the mission length unknown if anything were to go wrong.
And just as you seemed to have gotten in, you were getting out and drying yourself off and shoving on your clothes to ignore the redness of your skin and out you went, almost slamming the door behind you..
Watching the laundry washer go on and on in a circular motion as you heard boots click in the quiet area and up your head shot up before you locked gaze with König. And this time, he looked just the same amount of towering out of his gear just as he would with it on. And at the moment, he is sporting his boots, sweats and a loose t-shirt.
And then, without a single word, he left the room. Huh, nervous? Perhaps anxiety. Shrugging you then heard the sound cry out from the washer before you opened it and threw the clothes into the dryer and sat back down watching it turn..and turn..and turn....
Before you knew it, you were being nudged awake by someone only for your eyes to snap open and you instincts to snap awake as you kicked your legs out and tackled the figure in front of you and hearing them land underneath you with an 'ooff' only for the motion detection lights to flicker alive only to reveal you had slammed poor König underneath you. And you became self-aware of where your hips were. Quickly scampering off of him, you apologized profusely as you helped him to you feet only to be silenced by a light German thick accent breaking through from underneath his mask.
"Ah, no worries. I'm quite surprised at how someone so small can pack quite the punch! But I walked past the barrack area and your door was open and you weren't there so, I came back here to find you sleeping."
Face warming up, you laughed to yourself before thanking him as you took your outfit from earlier out of the dryer and folded the clothes only to find him standing there waiting?
As if he read you like a book, he suddenly broke into words, sporadically speaking swiftly.
Oh- sorry. I was just gonna walk you to your room- if you'd be okay with it?"
You watched him fiddle with his fingers nervously like a child would when caught in with their hand in the cookie jar.
"You can walk me to my room König"
And with that, He seemed to lighten up, and in silence, you two had made your ways to your room, and with that, He abided you a good night and left you to your own devises. And with huff, you made sure your pack was all set and you put the clothes needed for tomorrow on the floor next to the cot as you set an early 4am alarm before lying beneath to small blankets covering you now, savoring them and drifted off the rest before the hell waiting for tomorrow as the image of green eyes drifted into thoughts of sleep....

Hey, I’ve been thinking of trying out some fiber arts (specifically card weaving) and I remembered seeing you do a lot of knitting stuff. Do you have any basic advice or recs for picking yarn? I’m sure if I get into this I’ll take the time to hunt down more specific resources, but to start I’m probably just going to grab a couple yarn colors from the nearest store lol.
Specifically, I remember seeing some post about how the little pill/yarn ball thingies that form on sweaters when you wash them are because of the yarn not being properly prepared. Do you know about that, and if it’s something I should worry about? Or should I just be fine grabbing whatever off the shelf and getting right to work?
By the way, I love seeing your designs on my dash when they pop up, they’re really nice!
Hi, thanks very much, I'm happy to hear you like my stuff!
For yarn choices, I'm not super familiar with card weaving (so if anybody reading this knows more, please add your thoughts if you want!) but I've read that cotton-based yarns are good for it. Stuff with a smoother, consistent texture would be a good starting place.
I think a plant-based fiber like cotton is less prone to pilling, too. Another thing that helps to prevent that is the ply of the yarn--the higher the better. That info will usually be on the yarn label with the 'weight' listing.
Other than that, I would say that if you're using a pattern for your project, see if the maker has suggested a yarn! Even if you can't or don't want to find the exact same one, the pattern might tell you what weight to use (worsted, dk, lace, etc.) for a specific project and you can go from there. (At least, that is the case for knitting and crocheting, I'm not sure about card weaving patterns.)
I hope this helps a bit! Good luck with your crafting!

Harrington Christmas Dinner
summary: steve helps calm you down after stressing over going to your first infamous harrington christmas family dinner as his official girlfriend.
pairing: steve harrington x fem!reader
warnings: just some teeth rotting fluff and a bit of comfort, and a bit of cussing
word count: 2,130 words
authors note: so did this take me a week? yes, i fucking hate getting headaches out of random cause they actually drain me for the next two days. but this fluffy comfortery goodness is what i dream of when being steve’s girlfriend. and i think i might write more things about playing house with steve, whoknows tho
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Steve laid on his stomach in his king bed, sleeping peacefully until his eyes shot open. Two things woke Steve up, the smell of the freshly brewed coffee and the sound of the oven being slammed shut followed by a string of curse words before the house returned back to silence. Reaching his arm towards her side of the bed, feeling it empty and cold. (Y/n)?” Rubbing his eye after sitting upright. Pushing his dangled up hair back and out of his face, placing his feet on the cold hardwood floor. Looking over towards the clock on his nightstand, half past noon. They had to leave in thirty minutes and be on the road if they wanted to make it to Steve’s parents' vacation house for Christmas dinner.
Slipping on his fuzzy reindeer slippers, she had insisted on getting a matching pair, and yawning widely while walking out his room and towards the stairs. Hearing the noise of metal hitting one another, Christmas music softly playing in the background, and her voice muttering things.
He reached the kitchen, leaning against the doorway crossing his ankles and arms. Watching her as she was having a conversation with herself, all while moving about the kitchen doing last minute things before, they had to leave. Currently she was poking each of the sugar cookies to see if they were cool enough to ice. The stove suddenly dinged, making her turnaround from the island, picking up the glass dish that had brownie batter in it and holding it with one hand while the other opened the oven door. Bending down and pushing in on the middle rack, closing it and turning back towards the island. “Alright thirty minutes, then cool, cut, and pack up.” She thought aloud after setting the kitchen timer.
“We leave in thirty minutes,”
(Y/n)’s headshot turned towards him, a soft smile of relief appeared on her face. “How long have you been standing there?”
“Oh, you know,” He started walking towards the coffee maker, “Long enough to see you rewrite your to-do list seven times in your head.”
“Your cups in the microwave, honey.” He smiled, placing his hands on her waist to get past her easier. Reaching the microwave, opening it and pulling out the festive ugly sweater designed coffee mug. “Three sugars and a splash of milk,” He smiled sweetly at her before bringing the warm mug up to his lips, taking a sip while walking back over to her. Humming sweetly as he set the mug down on the island and out of the way of her mess. “Exactly what I need after last night.” He kissed her temple, making her smirk, “I told you to go back to bed, but nooo!”
The two of them had been up late last night, (Y/n) wrapping the gifts up having waited till the last minute to do so. And Steve had insisted that he should help after all they were HIS family, but both came to a quick realization that he had no idea how to wrap a present. So instead, she had him on gift bag duty bagging all the gifts that couldn’t be wrapped. He finished earlier than her, so he offered to stay downstairs and wait for her to finish so they could go to bed together. Ending up sleeping for three hours before waking up to see her gone. Getting up and walking into the kitchen to see her getting everything ready for the morning so everything would go smoothly. Going back and forth on leaving things alone, having to pick her up, throwing her over his shoulder and brought her upstairs.
“Alright, everything is going well, I need to ice the cookies, finish up the brownies and then box everything up. All the while you get ready, so that way you can play Tetris with the bags, and gifts, and the-”
“Breathe,”
“How am I supposed to breathe when I’m meeting your whole family? I mean aunts, uncles, cousins, great uncles that are twice removed?!”
“Hey, hey, hey,” He softly soothed, holding either of her forearms, rubbing his hands up and down them. “As long as you are your adorable, cute, sarcastic self they’ll love you.” She sighed, whipping her palms on the apron that was tied around her waist, “I just, I know how they are with you, and I don’t want them to not like me and that only causes more problems between y’all.” She rambled looking down at their feet, both wearing the same reindeer slippers.  He titled his head slightly, bringing his hands up to cup either side of her face making her fully look up at him. “If they don’t like you then they can honest go fuck themselves.”
“Steve, they’re your parents.”
“Yes, but I don’t want to wake up every morning with either one of them every day.” He joked, making you giggle softly. “Look, I didn’t go with them to the house for a reason. I wanted to spend the few days of your favorite month together. Seeing your face light up when we go for a nightly drive around the blocks to look at the different lights. Decorating an empty house because we were doing it together. And those stupid fucking gingerbread house that I still say only stay up because you used real glue.” He joked making you laugh louder this time, “Okay, okay, I get it.”
He pulled you in closer so now each of their chest were pressed against one another, his bare hairy chest to her shirt (his shirt) covered. Her arms wrapped around his waist, looking into each other's eyes feeling nothing but warmth and comfort in one another. This was each other’s favorite place to be. Feeling like time had stood still and nothing else mattered.
“So it worked?”
“Job well done, Stevie,”
The small space between their body’s about to close but the ringing of the small white kitchen timer caught (Y/n)’s attention. Causing her head to turn away just as Steve’s was going forward. Sighing lightly, reach forward for the mug and step to the side and out of the way of the oven.
“I swear if these are burnt, I’m drowning you in the snow.” She threatened all while placing both mittens on. Bending down, opening the door and retrieving the dish out of the oven. Placing it on top, pulling the door up and turning the oven off. Place the mittens on the countertop to the side of the oven. “You need to put on some clothes.”
He held out his arms, mug still in hand, “What I thought this was perfect.”
She looked him up and down shaking her head, walking back to the island and getting the icing ready. “You in your underwear and fuzzy slippers isn't what your parents meant by formal.”
He stood there for a moment watching her dip a few cookies into the runny white icing. Loving the way her considered face was, her mouth slightly gap while her brows frowned together. “Steve, we are going to be even more late if you don’t move already.” And he did, bringing the mug with him as he moved to the other side of her, reaching over her and snatching one of the un-iced cookies. Quickly kissing her cheek before shoving it into his mouth, grinning widely while fastly walking away. “Hey! Steve!” She scolded, quickly reaching her foot up and lightly kicking his but.
❄️🤍☃️
Steve lightly tapped on the steering wheel, looking back between (Y/n) and the red break lights of the never ending line of cars in front of them. The windshield peppered with small raindrops, the weather not being cold enough for it to snow again like it had been for the past few weeks. He noticed your leg hadn’t stopped bouncing up and down, seeing her wide-eyed worried expression. Looking ahead as much as he could realizing they were going to be stuck there for a while. Taking his seat belt off, gaining her attention made her expression go from worried to confused. Unzipping his jacket and pulling it off, reaching over and wrapping it around her, making her smile. Placing his hand on her thigh, “Look this will be over before you know it.”
“The traffic or the party?”
“Both,”
She shook her head, leaning it on the glass switch a sigh. “I just–I tried to make sure everything was perfect that they, that everyone would like me, like us. I mean I planned everything out. I made sure to bake your favorite basic as shit fudge brownies. The snowman sugar cookies to try and win over your little cousins. Not to mention the shopping I did!” She rambled out mindlessly fumbling with his fingers on her sweatpant covered thigh. Thinking it would be better if she slipped on a pair of Steve’s sweatpants (looser and easier to get on and off) and her winter boots (better being safer on the slippery and wet sidewalk). And taking them off and changing her shoes when they got there.
“Hey! I did do something.”
She tilted her head cupping his face giving a fake pout, “Right swiping the card and handling the bags are very hard work, Stevie.”
“Look,” He started, tapping on the wheel and looking between the radio clock and at the stand-still traffic. “It’s already seven, and at this rate we’ll be here by New Year’s. How about we take the next exit and find whatever is open.”
“It’s Christmas Day, the only places that are open are gas stations and the E.R!”
“It’s either we stay here and freeze to death, and make it up there by two in the morning and wake everyone up, or we go check and see if anything is open in–” He squinted his eyes trying to read the road sign. “--yup, nope, I have absolutely no idea what that says,”
She laughed, resting her head against the headrest, “Fine, fine, we can find a pizza shop, or a twenty-four-hour dinner.”
“Yes!” He laughed out reaching over and kissing her cheek. She pushed away lightly, “Eyes on the road, sweetface,” He looked back at the road, putting his blinker on trying to exit as soon as possible. He was happy that (Y/n) had agreed to blowing off the stupid Harrington Christmas Dinner.. He had seen how stressed out she had been this entire week. Knowing her stressed and anxious tendons are, from the some wrinkle in her forehead that show up when she’s staring off into space, or the stress baking. Hintce the brownies and cookies and the ones before those.
After twenty minutes, he was finally able to exit off the highway from hell. Driving down an empty dark road for another ten hoping the road signs that said a restaurant was a mile out was right. Watching as her eyes widened as each building was covered in decorations. From different colored lights hanging, to snowman and reindeer inflatable, while candy cane rods lined the sidewalks. Like the small town that they stumbled upon was the winter capital of the nation. Pulling up to a busy dinner, big logging and haul trucks parked near the back while Steve pulled up into the corner of the lot. As close to the door as they could since it still was cold and raining a bit.
“Okay,” Steve started to say after turning the car knowing he had a few minutes before the warmth would die. “You get a table and I’ll find a payphone, hopefully, and call my folks and let them in on the fun traffic we can’t get through.” He told her as she nodded, handing him his jacket back. “No you keep it,”
She tilted her head to the side, giving him an ‘oh really?’ expression, “We both know I can handle the cold better than you. So, take the jacket before I tackle you and straightjacket you with it.” She told him with a fake smile as he slowly took the jacket, “Good choice,”

for the ask game
🌴 Desert island item?
🐸 Describe your aesthetic.
🔮 What’s your dream job?
🌿 Describe your favorite outfit.
Thank you for these asks :D :D
🌴 Desert island item?
I previously answered this as 'a dog' or 'a boat', but if neither of those were options, I would definitely go for a mysteriously appearing monthly supply of good quality chocolate, because a deserted island dweller needs some luxuries, right?
🐸 Describe your aesthetic.
I'm not sure if this means clothing or room aesthetic, so I'm going to go for room, and looking around the room I'm currently in, I'd guess it's 'extremely colourful' (I think I have a bit of every colour in this room) and 'eclectic', with a touch of 'dog fur' (for that 'lived in' feeling).
🔮 What’s your dream job?
I still think it's probably textile designer and maker. I would love to just nerd out on textiles and make things with my hands all day.
🌿 Describe your favorite outfit.
I love the combo of a short-sleeved shirt or sweater + a long sleeved base layer + jeans or cargo pants. I will never not be comfortable in that, plus I make most of my sweaters, so it's nice to wear them and feel all accomplished.

Libby Spotlight: Let’s Get Crafty
Mending Matters by Katrina Rodabaugh
Mending Matters explores sewing on two levels: First, it includes more than twenty projects that showcase visible mending—styles that are edgy, modern, and bold, yet draw on traditional stitching. It does all this with just four simple mending techniques: exterior patches, interior patches, slow stitches, darning, and weaving. In addition, the book addresses the way mending leads to a more mindful relationship to fashion and to overall well-being.
In essays that accompany each how-to chapter, Katrina Rodabaugh explores mending as a metaphor for appreciating our own naturally flawed selves. She also examines the ways in which mending teaches us new skills, self-reliance, and confidence, all gained from making things with our own hands.

This was a survey I took on Quotev, and it really helped me flesh out Ebon!
here it is!
My answers beneath the cut!
Heya, let's just begin, shall we? Okay, so let's start off simple. What's there name and name meaning?
Ebon. It's a shortened version of ebony, which is a wood of dark colouring.
2
100
How about there age?
15
3
100
Physical appearance?
A skeleton monster covered in corruption (teal and black goo). Dark grey sweater with blue accents. Light grey shorts with aqua sides. 4 tentacles come out of his back.

How do they act around others?
Very standoffish. They're fairly shy and don't like socializing. He may come off as rude, but does get along with close friends.

 Best life experience?
Aftermath of corruption when he figured that they now had tentacles.
48
100
What would absolutely break them? What would it take? Has it already happened?
If his twin sister, Naima, died. It did happen sort of, because when she corrupted when they were 6 years old, she went blind, and that killed a part of Ebon since Naima never acted the same way again.

Parents and siblings were killed by the Star Sanses and Ebon was forced to live by himself in hiding.
96

The moon is a loyal companion. It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human. Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections. She imagined loving him would feel like falling in love with darkness, frightening and consuming yet utterly beautiful when the stars came out. Every good story needs a villain. But the best villains are the ones you secretly like. Every good story needs a villain. But the best villains are the ones you secretly like. Gold shimmered no matter what, but few people could make darkness glitter the way he did. Dreams that come true can be beautiful, but they can also turn into nightmares when people won't wake up. Her heart was still a little heavy, but she'd decided carrying it around would only maker her stronger.  He smelled of magic and heartbreak, and something about the combination made her think that despite what he claimed, he wanted to be her hero. Fear was a poison that people mistook as protection. Making choices to stay safe could be just as treacherous. The auburn haired daughter of the earth’s greatest villain used to be scared of it, but now looking at this flirtatious boy thinks love is another type of magic. It makes everything brighter, it makes people who have it stronger, it breaks rules that aren't supposed to exist, it's infinitely valuable. The fear came from the death of her mother who as a queen should have been the same amount of safe as these two flirting immortals.  Hayley, the queen of the new orlean werewolves, disappeared like a broken star, leaving the world untouched in the ashes of her form , save for the bits of missing light that no one would ever see again. She loved the feeling of doing something bold enough to make her future hold its breath. Hope had been the one to make her mother a vampire along with being a werewolf after her birth. Klaus and his heir now the only mixture of creatures. while she closed her eyes and reveled in the sensation that she’d made a choice with the power to alter the course of her life when her position and the legacy of her father put it other wise. She remembered her first impression of him, tall, roughly handsome, and dangerous, like poison dressed up in an attractive bottle. He looked like a freshly woken storm, or a beautiful nightmare come to life so he could personally haunt her. They had been practicing dancing at the moment. Hope wearing one of her more expensive sweaters and plaid skirt in leui of the blue tulle the 21 year old had for the night. It was a wonder her father hadn’t worn his spine as necklace when they were so clearly smitten.  The air was full of salt and secrets. They had spent a long time together and she found herself liking the demon prince’s soul which was a conudrum she had been surprised that she had to say. She wanted to be the friend he fell hopelessly in love with. The one he took into his arms and into his bed and into the private world he kept trapped in his head. She wanted to be that kind of friend. The one who will memorize the things he said as well as the shape of his lips when he says them. He wanted to know every curve, every freckle, every shiver of his body. She wanted to know where to touch him, She wanted to know how to touch him. She wanted to know how to convince him to design a smile just for her.  And they are quotation marks, inverted and upside down, clinging to one another at the end of this life sentence. Trapped by lives they did not choose. “I think this is the first time I have seen you act princely, love. I’m not sure if it makes me want to give you that kiss you asked for or step on your feet which I have grown up absolutely finding such a thing a sin. I had hoped that I would win that bet of ours. I mean you have been comfortable with me doing magic and more. art is my wheelhouse. We will see if you clean up nicely.”

Fabric Glossary: Understanding Different Fabric Types
Tumblr media
There are a wide range of fabrics available in the market.
Choosing the right fabric is the crucial decision.
No matter if you are shopping for clothing, or selecting upholstery for your home, each type of fabric brings its own set of characteristics and benefits, making it essential to understand their differences and uses.
So, without further ado, let us understand different fabric types, uses and their characteristics.
Canvas Fabric -
Canvas fabric is prized for its durability and versatility, crafted typically from cotton or a blend of fibers with a plain weave structure that ensures strength and resilience.
Known for its coarse texture that softens with use, canvas is favored in various industries and creative endeavors.
It finds applications in outdoor gear such as backpacks and tents due to its water-resistant properties, as well as in home decor for upholstery and drapery. Artists also favor canvas for painting surfaces, appreciating its ability to hold paint well.
In fashion, canvas is used for robust clothing items like jackets and pants, exemplifying its adaptability across practical and artistic domains.
Cotton + Steel -
Known for attention to detail and creative flair, Cotton + Steel fabrics offer enthusiasts and makers a chance to express their creativity through quilts, apparel, and home decor items.
These fabrics are crafted from high-quality cotton, often featuring bold patterns, vibrant colors, and unique motifs that cater to a wide range of sewing and crafting projects.
Their versatility makes them a popular choice for adding personality and charm to any project, from statement-making garments to eye-catching quilts and accessories.
Gauze Fabric -
Gauze fabric is celebrated for its lightweight and breathable nature, characterized by an open weave that creates a delicate, airy texture.
Typically made from cotton or cotton blends, gauze fabric is exceptionally soft and comfortable against the skin, making it a popular choice for clothing in warm climates or for sensitive skin. Its loosely woven construction allows for excellent airflow, making it ideal for summer clothing such as dresses, blouses, and lightweight scarves.
Gauze fabric is also favored for baby clothing and swaddles due to its gentle touch and ability to provide comfort without overheating.
Knit Cotton Fabric -
Knit cotton fabric is beloved for its softness, stretch, and versatility, making it a staple in casual and activewear.
Unlike woven fabrics, knit cotton is made using interlocking loops of yarn, resulting in a fabric that stretches comfortably in all directions. This stretchiness lends itself well to garments that require ease of movement, such as t-shirts, leggings, and sweaters.
Knit cotton fabric is breathable and absorbs moisture, making it ideal for activewear that keeps you cool and dry during workouts. Its comfortable drape and forgiving nature also make it popular for loungewear and children's clothing.
Lawn Fabric -
Lawn fabric is a lightweight and finely woven textile known for its silky texture and crisp finish. Originally made from linen, modern lawn fabric is predominantly crafted from cotton, offering a soft and luxurious feel with a delicate drape.
Lawn fabric is often used for creating elegant blouses, flowing dresses, and lightweight skirts that showcase its fluidity and subtle sheen. Its ability to hold intricate prints and patterns exceptionally well has made it a favorite for floral designs, paisleys, and other detailed motifs. Additionally, lawn fabric is favored for children's clothing and heirloom sewing due to its durability and comfort.
Rayon -
Rayon is a versatile and popular semi-synthetic fabric known for its softness, draping qualities, and breathability. It is made from natural cellulose fibers, typically sourced from wood pulp, which undergoes a chemical process to create the fibers used in fabric production.
Rayon is appreciated for its silk-like appearance and feel, making it a more affordable alternative to natural silk. It has excellent moisture absorption properties, making it comfortable to wear in warm weather.
This fabric is used in a wide range of applications, including dresses, blouses, linings, and upholstery.
Understanding the variety of fabric types not only enriches our ability to create but also helps us make choices that match our needs and preferences. Each fabric, from the durable canvas to the airy gauze and the versatile knit cotton to the elegant rayon, brings unique qualities to our projects.
By learning about fabrics like Cotton+Steel prints and exploring their uses, we unlock endless possibilities for expressing our style and creativity.
Happy Shopping!
