Season 4: oh wow he died doing the hottest thing ever ('making it up as we go.') Nice.

Season 5: (no time to react before he's back) Are you literal god??

Season 7(first time) denial, then cursing cas out for his choices (ie, choosing crowley instead of dean... Big Feelings on display)

Season 7 (about 3 seconds after the first time in season 7): I'm going to be upset about this the rest of the year, have full on nightmare ptsd from it, and project it onto every relationship and interaction in my life from now on.

Season 8: I will be so traumatized by this that the memories won't even form properly and I won't even be able to SPEAK ABOUT IT AT ALL. Period.

Season 9: only about 6 seconds before he's back, but still a significant amount of wailing his name.

Season 12: depression, rage, eventual suicide

Season 15: Sobbing hysterically. Not even caring that Sam is calling because everyone is dead. Not giving a fuck about any other actual thing in the rest of the world no matter the stakes. Followed by:

'Castiel wants me to live, and I suppose I've internalized the message that I am not a terrible, unworthy person, so I will live and not kill myself so that his sacrifice means something. J/k thank god a fucking rebar. Don't call an ambulance. Don't bring me back. Please let me die.'

I'm new here, so I don't think anyone needs my thoughts, but I brought them anyway. I've been watching supernatural for a very, very long time, and I've rewatched it more than once. This year I decided to rewatch it again, but at a new level of viewing depth. And I got a bit hyperfixated. Then I discovered this amazing (and even seemingly not completely dead) world of fandom on Tumblr. One of the topics that interested me was the relationship between Dean and Cas and the different interpretations of it, which still cause heated debate even after so many years. To organize in my head all the tons of content that I absorbed from old and new blogs of different directions, I made a small diagram that I want to share with you. In the future, I would also like to make similar diagrams including episodes/lines that people use to confirm their position.

I am a historian by profession, and moreover I study historiography (the history of how history is written), so I'm used to not taking any position and trying to look at things more or less objectively, so I don't want to belittle any of the interpretations (although obviously some of them I consider more logical and have a place in the canon)

And of course I want to admire the level of some meta-writers that I have read, including in the last six months. Most of them have not kept their blogs for a long time, but the amazing amount of work they have done amazed me.

That man worked for it! He sat down on that bed so gaily that they had to call the execs about it and he still didn't budge! He decided to make Cas' voice extra low so he wouldn't hurt Dean's ears. He acted like a jilted lover when Cas became human. And when everyone was calling the fans delusional, he came thru with "you are not crazy" tweet because he knew, he'd been doing it on purpose.

My man laid the groundwork! He deserves to say Cas is gay & be annoying about it! Get on his level or keep your mouth shut.

I've noticed that with smutty fics I wrote there's less kudos compared to the number of hits than with angsty/fluffy fics without smut, despite having angst and/or fluff in the smutty ones too.

I'm still a bit new to this whole thing, but I'm thinking things through and I like to structure them. I do it mostly for myself, but why not share it now that the work is done? While researching the different interpretations of Dean and Cas' relationship, as well as the different views within the "shipper wars" that seem to be going on in the supernatural fandom, I came across statements like: "Just would like to point out that no one destiel shipper is a dean girl…". The argument is simple - if you know Dean, you know that he cares about Sam the most. So no one but Sam can fill that vacant spot in his heart. I felt like that wasn't a fair accusation to those whose favorite character is Dean and who share the destiel interpretation. I can't say that I fully share the vision of Cas and Dean's relationship as purely romantic, but I was interested in answering the question for myself as to why Destiel is so popular, if, based on the logic of the above statement, fans should understand that a place in Dean's heart is occupied. In this small diagram (which, of course, cannot cover all the nuances of my and others' thoughts), I wanted to structure for myself how our fan desires are formed regarding the fate of Dean Winchester (during the series or in the post-finale). In the part about Wincest, I write a little about my vision of this ship (although I try to avoid value judgments), but I want to note that I am not fighting with anyone. This is just a small remark that seemed appropriate to me. In the rest, I was more interested in the process of forming our fan expectations and desires.

P.S. In this analysis I do not take into account two issues: 1. For Wincest, the problematic issue for many is that Sam and Dean are brothers. 2. The fact that we have no direct textual confirmation that Dean can be bisexual. These issues are indirectly related to the problematic that I am considering (for example, the fact that many people cannot see Wincest because there is a cultural taboo on incest that we cannot cross, or we consider Dean a reliable narrator about his straight orientation and cannot consider the possibility of his reciprocity with Cas). But this is not the main topic, so I will leave it out.
