Great catch!
What's so interesting about the discourse analysis amongst Japanese, Taiwanese, and English is that the hedging (word choices that lessen the directness of a dialogue) is more clear in the Japanese ("by the way") and Taiwanese ("it came to mind") translations. Whereas, English's hedging is found in "...right?" What the three of them do share in common is that Loid's discourse is pointing to active voice by stating "your name is spelled A-N-Y-A". Apply all of these translations below:
(ENG) Your name is spelled A-N-Y-A, right?
(JP) By the way, your name is spelled A-N-Y-A.
(TW) It came to mind, your name is spelled A-N-Y-A.
It is consistent that Loid's tone is holding authority by demonstrating his knowledge on Ostanian orthography based off the transcriptions he's seen of Anya's name registered as "A-N-Y-A" which was spelled by her previous Ostanian adopted parents. So Twilight feels confident that the spelling of her name MUST be "Anya."
Another thing I wanted to add on to your observation is catching loss of translation, which is so unfortunately common. English translation omits translations mainly because some expressions or dialogue that are common in a language (Japanese and Taiwanese) would be perceive differently in English-speaking countries (USA, UK, AUS, CAN, etc.). This is called cultural discount.

It's the reason why Squid Game English dub missed out on many jokes that are play on words in the Korean dub. It is also the reason why a lot of American jokes are not understood by non-English speaking speakers OTL
But this is a general phenomenon because American consumers would find the expression strange simply because we do not have this discourse reflected in our discourse. The best example is when @_mika60 translated the omitted text "Anya's heart stirred at the mention of her own name." To an American, this expression can be perceived as corny/purple-prosey. Because American discourse don't generally have this emotionally-charged reflective discourse. Hence, omitted. Which is unfortunate because it says so much about how Loid's spelling affected Anya's feelings. So this is a perfect example of cultural discount.
An example of loss in translation is the omission of Anya's text which explains why she can't carve out her name is due to feeling insecure about her bad handwriting. (Again, this is character analysis that English-reading consumers missed out on!) Whereas English, we completely omit that detail because Englisth native speakers don't need that extra dialogue. English speakers are straight to the point, and we are (hopefully) intelligent enough to understand that this is a child carving her name, so of course children will have a difficult time to carve out their name.
I love translation comparisons mainly because you get to experience cultural exchange if you are fortunate enough to understand multiple languages. Thank you for doing God's work @connoisseursdecomfort
Comparing versions of short mission 11 - English version, Taiwanese version and JP version
How are there four differences when there are only three pages?
[Spoilers alert]
.
.
.
The first two are relatively minor - it just provides more context to the situation:
It means something like "you can do whatever to your room as you like".

The JP version and the Chinese version actually explains why Anya can't do it right: アーニャ字下手くそで上手くでまない Anya thinks her handwriting is bad, so she can't do it right, or the outcome would not be good.
The third one is kinda more important.

It isn't really specified in the English version, but it was in fact quite a casual moment for Loid. He just casually said, oh by the way そういえば you've spelled your name wrong. It doesn't sound like a stern talk at all. In the Chinese version it is translated as "it just came to my mind".
The last one is something that is missing from the English version:

_mika60 has quite a good translation here:
Again, see my other post - Ania アニア is different from Anya アーニャ. In the Taiwanese version it said Anya has sunk into deep thoughts because of her own name while she said アーニャ.
Just food for thoughts.

dusknoir's selfishness appreciation post
One aspect of Dusknoir's character I find deeply captivating is how his selfish motivation to live on remains unique and differentiated from the rest of the cast. In a story where most of the characters are willing to sacrifice themselves for a greater good, it's fascinating to see how Dusknoir at no point ever seeks that greater good, and yet the writers succeed in giving him an emotional and satisfying character arc. All without ever getting rid of what made Dusknoir work as an antagonist in the first place, something that stands out even more when comparing him to his peers in SE5. So lemme ramble about it for a bit
Dusknoir is motivated by his fear of disappearing and, in spite of sparing a thought to how welcoming the world was before the paralysis ("The quality of life here must be cheery and charming. / Why, it’s so welcoming, I might like to settle here myself… Hoo-hoo-ha!"), at no point is he ever shown regretful or hesitant to cruelly eliminate those who attempt to change history. His determination at times seems firmer than Grovyle's, since Grovyle is seen apologizing for his actions or forcing himself to focus on his mission to save the planet above all else (Crystal Lake and encounter with Spiritomb during his escape from the Sableye, respectively). Dusknoir's objective is much smaller in scope and he shows no sign of being able to have his mind swayed.
He is self-centred and terrified, as expected of Pokémon in the dark future. In Explorers's tale, where major plot beats revolve around accepting sacrifice and overcoming your fears, it's no wonder Dusknoir works perfectly as the major opposing force throughout the game. Where Hero and Grovyle (and Celebi although the narrative ignores her for the most part) love the world too much to let it die, Dusknoir can't think of anything except perpetuating his own survival at all costs, disregarding the fact that he has no actual reason to live. The only thing we see him do is serve Primal Dialga, and even that job seems limited to "get rid of those who try to change history". There are no prospects of anything better coming his way.
Morover, Dusknoir's lack of care for the world remains consistent throughout SE5. As Grovyle's main opposing force, it's only natural all the arguments about the "morally right thing to do" are white noise to him. When Grovyle finishes explaining the heroic grand objective of his mission, that saving the planet will grant everyone in the past a new future, Dusknoir blatantly ignores his entire argument. He shows no regard for any life but his own, something that might also be inferred from the careless way he treats the Sableye and Spiritomb.
To continue the trend of Grovyle and Dusknoir being foils of each other, SE5 show us example after example of Grovyle looking for strenght in others, lending a thought to Hero and Partner, reminding himself again and again why he fights so hard. Through it all, he never loses sight of the global consequences of his actions, "for the future!" "make an impact in Partner's future" "the fate of the Pokémon in the future".
In fact, Hero and Partner rarely leave his thoughts. Grovyle is deeply tied to others thanks to his internal thoughts, whereas Dusknoir's thoughts, all throughout the Frozen Island, never stray far from his worst enemy. Even the two ocassions when he brings up Hero or Partner are meant to torment Grovyle, he's very isolated otherwise. It only reinforces how narrow his scope is, compared to Grovyle's ambition of changing the entire world for no benefit to himself.
Up until the middle of SE5 Grovyle seems like a deeply selfless character, and that remains true until the end. However, in a moment of brilliance, the writers introduce to us Grovyle's objective of making his life shine, of leaving a footprint in the world so he will be remembered by others, a selfish motivation. One that is as valid, captivating and powerful as the selfless "give everyone a new life is", and a selfish one nevertheless. And that is exactly what Dusknoir needed to hear. In a parallel to the first conversation of the episode, Dusknoir is once again hurt and vulnerable and listening to Grovyle's justification for his mission. Only this time he pays close attention to what Grovyle says; and this time, to his later dismay, he understands him.
Dusknoir's character arc is partly as strong as it is because the writers are not erasing any of his flaws or established personality, they are precisely using that wish to not disappear and that focus on his own life to drive Dusknoir into a noble objective. Therefore, when Dusknoir switches sides, it is believable. There is enough evidence to see why he was swayed by the idea of his spirit lingering in the world, where millions of lives never made a dent in his determined pursuit of hopeless self-preservation.
As if that wasn't enough, the writers make a point of driving this selfish motivation even further home by contrasting it with literally every other friendly character we can talk to. We only need to take a look at Celebi and the Sableye's lines of dialogue to see that, if the writers had intended for Dusknoir to care for the future itself, they would have had no issue making him say it explicitly. All these characters can spare a line to the greater good of the planet.
And yet, Dusknoir's distinct objective remains clear until the very end, no mentions of the future or any global scale, he wants to make his life shine and live to the fullest in the time he has left. It's an aspect i see overlooked quite a lot in general media, using selfishness to contribute to the big heroic mission. Since Pokémon games tend to have a clearer, more simplified message, where being selfish should be bad and being selfless would be unambiguously good, I am rather fond of this example of a villainous antagonist turning the same qualities that made him an insurmountable threat into the strenght of a crucial member of the team that helped to save the world.
I firmly believe this is a pretty important piece of Dusknoir's characterization. Obviously, he is indirectly "caring" about the world by saving it, yet that is never his main goal by any stretch. Keeping his self-centred personality is an extremely compelling way to develop his character for the better without introducing any external influence, relying on "i'll do the right thing" or the cliché "do it for X person" that would water down his place in the narrative and contradict his established characterization. Once he recognizes the truth in Grovyle's words, he is able to put his fear aside and finally live, for whatever time he has left, as himself and for himself.
[As a funny detail, i find quite charming how celebi is shown to fight for nothing but to save the future; dusknoir, on the contrary, is wholly focused on leaving an impact on the world; and grovyle somehow holds both motivations without neither overshadowing the other. If this isn't proof that they're meant to be a trio, i don't know what it is lol]
#pmd2#dusknoir#just rambling really#again#i like this guy sorry#dusknoir my beloved i love you and your fear of disappearing that somehow becomes a motivation for you to fight god#i feel his 'villainous' traits are soooo cool#also i feel its a shame that the writers wrote so much dialogue for celebi and sableye that rarely#gets commented on. and yet it can serve wonders for comparisons with dusknoir's own optional dialogue#i wanted to make a quick comment on the cel3bi/sabl3ye versus dusknoir dialogue and instead ended up writing 1k why am i like this#anyways wheres my spectrum of selfishness within future trio#with gr0vyle balancing the other two (it ends up terribly. do not let gr0vyle balance shit)#pmd eos

i swear whenever i see a satan and mc (ra-on) scene these two... they got some electrifying moments and are pretty damn cute tbh. they have such a great dynamic imo. the way he's like 'you're gonna pay' and the mc calls him 'your majesty' like this feels like kinky foreplay XD honestly satan is such a great mc supporter in this game.
#whb satan#whb#whb thoughts#this is not in comparison to any other king or devil. i just think satan and mc dialogue is great though. theyre a really fun unit#i kinda get why satan wins a lot of the fan polls on tumblr nowadays#whb spoilers

Aerith never casting off that copycat label 🤣

It's almost like the devs are trying to say something 🤔

That maybe everything she says and does is forced and not with Cloud's consent 🤔

And that she's literally no different to all the other characters invading Cloud's space and not showing him any respect because they wanna get in his face, touch him and make him do things because that's what they want 🤔
I've said before she has nothing unique with him, and let's set aside how she's doing her best to steal important moments from Tifa because she's scum, and look at how her only unique moments are when Cloud keeps telling her to stop saying they're dating, and when he calls her nakama. He always calls her nakama. She ain't even as close to him as tomodachi Jessie was 🤷🤣
Filler Couples in FF7R
Hi, Tumblr!
(Warning: LTD Fuckery. Get lost if you can’t stand shipping-talk.)
I have seen a lot of commentary regarding the most recent content being released for FF7R, both official & unofficial. The most bold and aggravating comments come from the shipping fandoms, of course. The Clerith fandom, in particular, are going menacingly hard - whether they’re gloating over some scenes or downright downplaying others, their comments and feelings regarding the game seem to fluctuate the hardest out of everyone else’s.
It’s a literal emotional rollercoaster reading their opinions. Quite fascinating. It ranges from thinking that Cloud’s English VA is far too crude towards Aerith to them being sure that Cloud and Aerith had a valiant hero & heroine moment at the end of the game. Interesting.
But I would like to gage in on one of many aspects that they’ve been raving about: they seem to think that all ships BUT Clerith are simple fan service. They’re insisting that Clerith is going to be the flagship pairing, and that the developers/creators are using Clessie (Cloud x Jessie) and Cloti (Cloud x Tifa) as a fan service component. Although they may be using this technique, I think they have the flagship pairing incorrect.
After studying the game’s romance interactions, it became more and more obvious that Cloud and Aerith have extremely similar “romantic” scenes as Cloud and Jessie. Even more interesting is that these scenes are just as shallow, cliche, corny, and mundane. Whereas Cloud and Tifa’s scenes are always much more deep, thoughtful, and somehow always bring up their tragic past. Cloud and Tifa have an apparent neuronal & emotional link that literally no other character could replace nor understand.
Of course, to back up my statement, I do have SEVERAL instances where Cloud and Jessie have almost IDENTICAL scenes as Cloud and Aerith. If Cloud and Aerith were the intended romantic couple that will be slowly “burned” into the game’s plot, why do they have the same generic, light-hearted, bantered flirting as Cloud and Jessie? Again, it’s rather interesting. Personally, I don’t think it makes sense to follow this logic, but to each their own!
But without further ado, here are the interactions! I won’t go into details since the body language/dialogue literally do all of the work:
—
Clessie Interaction 1:
Clerith Interaction 1:
—
Clessie Interaction 2:
Clerith Interaction 2:
—
Clessie Interaction 3:
Clerith Interaction 3:
(BONUS Clessie Moment):
—
Clessie Interaction 4 (Both exceptionally curious about Tifa’s role):
Clerith Interaction 4:
—
Clessie Interaction 5:
Clerith Interaction 5:
—
Clessie Interaction 6(Ft. Wedge, Heeding a Warning):
Clerith Interaction 6:
—
Clessie Interaction 7:
Clerith Interaction 7:
—
Clessie Interaction 8:
Clerith Interaction 8:
—
BONUS CLODGE (CLOUD x WEDGE) & CLERITH COMPARISONS!
Clodge Interaction 1:
Clerith Interaction 1:
—
Clodge Interaction 2:
Clerith Interaction 2:
—
And there ya have it! Pretty hilarious!
I would imagine if the canon & intended flagship pairing was Clerith, the developers would at least TRY to make their moments much more unique, NOT make them totally identical to Clessie moments. Although both Clessie and Clerith have very sweet moments, there are no parallels that can be compared to Cloud and Tifa’s intimate moments - Cloud & Tifa have unique moments that are character-specific. Tifa and Cloud know things about each others that others couldn’t emulate, something Aerith nor Jessie could relate to (possibly why both Aerith & Jessie eagerly ask about Tifa’s standing with Cloud).
But alas, this is just an opinion based on obviously stated evidence. We’ll see how the development team treats the romance component of this game.

Ichigo: So how old are you, anyway?
Grimmjow: Hell if I know. Pretty sure I didn’t experience time the same way you do when I was an adjuchas, and fuck trying to remember anything from before I was a Gillian.
Ichigo: Adjuchas. Right. Which one is that again?
Grimmjow: Goddamn, is there anything in that head of yours, Kurosaki? Or are you really just here to look pretty and bash things with your sword?
Ichigo: I don’t just bash things with my sword, asshole. And what do you mean— *realizes what Grimmjow said* *ichigo.exe has stopped working*
Grimmjow: Yeah, that’s what I figured.
#king’s court#bleach#grimmichi#this isn’t so much an incorrect quote as it is me imagining dialogue for my latest one shot#in this house we don’t think too hard about how old Grimmjow would realistically be#ichigo is also not thinking about it too hard don’t worry about it#no but really it’s like twilight. I struck with such despair every time a movie with STUNNING visuals and design are paired with the most abhorrently egregious script and plot. How could they do this to us.
#I'm not even going to bother naming all the movies that follow this example because there are simply far too many#And to be honest- I'm usually able to still enjoy and watch those kind of films regardless of the bad plot or dialogue or actor or whatever#Because a few flaws don't FULLY ruin the movie#but I mean sometimes they just kinda suck man.#Like- they ultimately made an okay film! Definitely worthy of the amount of love they got in comparison to the effort put into it.#But it could have been more than just an okay film

Rise of Lyric has by far some of the most consistently expressive character animation of any 3D Sonic game ever, and frankly I think Frontiers should be embarrassed that it isn't at minimum on the same level as it, if not better.
Because here's the thing: RoL still looks awkward at times. Mouth shapes can feel a little weird, the eyebrows don't always seem to know what they're supposed to be doing, little things that give off the impression that it wasn't quite as polished as it wanted to be. But it's still LEAGUES above Frontiers, even with the progress it's made over other mainline games.
And look, I really can't claim to know how the models they're using work because I don't have the ability to mess around with them myself, but at this point I'm starting to wonder if they're just... not particularly stretchy by nature?? Because I can't imagine any other reason for them to be so stiff even when the animators are doing their best.
To prove my point, let's compare a very similar expression and pose of Sonic's from Frontiers and RoL respectively.
In both of these scenes, Sonic is expressing determination to fight in order to save his friends. In Frontiers, this is from the Final Horizon update, right after Amy, Tails, and Knuckles sacrificed their corporeal forms in order to bring Sonic back from corruption. Sonic is currently feeling the weight of that sacrifice full-force, lamenting that they gave up their chance at freedom for him, and uses that pain to push himself forward to really save them this time.
In Rise of Lyric, Sonic is staring down a robot army led by Metal Sonic as the door in front of them closes. He's already ushered Amy, Tails, and Knuckles behind him into a suspicious temple of sorts, but he's prepared to fight in case it doesn't close fast enough. He was told twice not to open the door in the first place, but he was concerned for his friends, and decided to prioritize protecting them over their own desires to keep fighting.
With such similar framing, it's hard not to see how Frontiers' expressions fall short. Both Sonics have their eyes narrowed, the bridge of their eyebrows scrunched down to separate them into two distinct shapes, and they're holding their fists up. But in Frontiers, it's not very clear what emotions he's feeling just by looking at him. Sure, he looks kinda determined if you squint, but at a glance, he looks almost more neutral than anything.
And it just gets worse the more you think about it because by all accounts, he should be having a MORE intense expression than the one in Rise of Lyric! I mean come on, the guy practically died five minutes ago and is gearing himself up for another round of Titan fights. He should be looking exhausted and utterly spent but like he's still gonna keep going somehow.
It got to the point where, halfway through writing this, I decided that it wasn't enough to just talk about what his expression should have looked like, and that I was going to put my money where my mouth was and redraw it myself.
I scrunched his eyes and brows down closer to how they are in the Boom screenshot for the determined look, made him look upwards with his irises instead of staring blankly ahead, and pulled up his lower eyelids to add an edge of desperation to him.
I kept his mouth in the same position, but tried to make it look a little more... angry? by curling it up on one side and showcasing his top teeth more. Finally, I changed the position of his body and arms a bit, to make it look like his whole body was tensing up along with his face.
These are all Extremely Doable in 3D animation - the only part I'm uncertain of is the mouth, since I tend to draw mouths with a very 2D mindset. But on principle, it should not be hard to shape his eyes to match his emotions. That is the absolute bare minimum of what you want your character models to be capable of in a professional setting.
And it's driving me nuts that Frontiers, savior of the Sonic games' credibility among the masses, is still being outclassed by what's considered the "second 06" of the franchise. What is happening over there that this keeps being a problem
#sonic the hedgehog#sonic frontiers#sonic boom#sonic boom rise of lyric#analysis#meta#I FORGOT ABOUT RIDERS IN THIS POST AND I'M SO SORRY IT LOOKS INCREDIBLE TOO#But I'm standing by the comparison to Rise of Lyric because Riders is going for wacky visual comedy#while RoL is typically more grounded in the same way that Frontiers wants to be#(not in terms of dialogue but in animation)#Also I didn't talk about it in the post but you can REALLY tell that Sonic's mouth is not built for anything other than grinning on the sid#I'm looking at his open mouth in that screenshot and.
