Let's just assume that v5.2 is giving us a highly desirable 5★ Pyro character who is at least Raiden levels of versatile, and maybe Furina or Nahida levels of "changes what teams are viable". (I'll be using female pronouns but let's also assume it's not a Himeko expy. Expectation management etc.) Let's also assume no new reactions / buffs, etc. Worst of all, let's assume the "Pyro is passion damage" truism holds.

4 potential Pyro kits that I hope we don't get (and 2 I'm okay with)

1: On-field Pyro DPS

(Why I don't like it: power creep.)

You know the drill. Big numbers, Pyro infusion, low enough ICD (or fast enough attacks) for reasonable XQ+YL reverse vape setups.

Less shield-dependent than HT+Arle, less poise-dependent than Yoimiya and Lyney, faster than Yanfei and Diluc, and, idk, stupidly high multipliers. ATK buff that scales on ATK because why not.

Example:

Press E to enter the Fiery Fire state, gaining a Pyro infusion increasing ATK by 50% of her current ATK.

Talent: after dealing a certain amount of DMG, deal a blast of AoE DMG.

Talent: when in the party in the overworld, if playing on mobile, all enemies move at 50% speed

2: Off-field Pyro DPS

(Why I don't like it: power creep.)

Example:

Press E to summon a Pyronado (20s duration 10s cooldown).

Press Q for a few hits of burst damage (Miko but 2× speed and homing), which simultaneously count as NA CA Skill and Burst DMG.

Talent: Elegy of the End

(Why I don't like it:) Burgeon is a niche, Thoma. I love and respect you but it's a very specific niche.

Example:

Press E to summon the Salon Des Dragons[...], which deals frequent Pyro damage and also coordinated attacks.

Talent: Burning can stack up to 3× damage and remains even after the Pyro or Dendro aura leaves. The Salon's attacks do not deplete Hydro aura. Overloaded pulls enemies in.

When crafting Character Ascension Gemstones, 50% chance to refund a portion of the materials used.

4: ATK buffer

(I.e. power creep)

You know, Pyro!Bennett. Less circle impact and more Navia's deal (or a Nahida sized circle). Swap the healing for damage prevention, perhaps, or follow Furina's footsteps and throw in some all-Element DMG% or Crit DMG% buff.

Green eyes optional.

5: Debuff (Pyro!Mona, Pyro!Lisa)

If Pyro is the "more damage" element and we don't want a Bennett 2.0, how about shredding RES better that Zhongli, or a less front-loaded Mona, or... all of the above?

Apply a debuff however we see fit. Nahida (E), Arlecchino (E), Mona (Q), Hu Tao (Q or E+CA), all have reasonable debuff triggers, as is a passive off-field effect. For wave clearing specifically(*), Yoimiya's target-jumping burst aura would also be pretty reasonable.

(*) after 4.1 (Peaks and Troughs) and 4.4 (Triumphant Frenzy) I think an endurance wave-clearing mode might be a viable endgame mode direction, RIP Nahida.

As for the debuffs, RES shred and/or DEF shred seem fine (the former being a nice boon for transformative reactions). Status curse that lowers enemy level if you want to be fancy :P

6: Off-field chip damage support

Consider our favourite leyline disorders, Smoldering Flames and Tracking Fire Ball, I guess this would... work? Arle+HT already do a little bit in the "DoT" niche but that's not their main deal.

E: Grant party a Curtain of Smolder. While under this effect, gain a Morning Star every 0.8s. If there are 4+ Morning Stars, consume them and launch a fireball at a nearby enemy (prioritising high HP) for stupid amounts of AoE damage. Whenever a party member under the Curtain of Smolder uses a Burst, gain a Morning Star. Whenever a party member deals DMG (max once per character per 1s), gain a Morning Star.

Q: oh yeah also all the enemies are taking ATK scaling Pyro DoT. Yeah it ignores defence. Yeah not removable.

Talent: While in the Curtain of Smolder state, the active character's attacks deal additional poise damage if they're not a Claymore user, additional fixed DMG if they're not a Bow/Catalyst User, and have increased ATK SPD if they're not a Sword/Polearm user.

Oh gosh, the last venti ask made me laugh nervously since my Venti has been heavily neglected 😭

I got Venti and put him on my team when I got him during Ayato’s rerun. I then started saving up for Xiao for Yelan’s release and didn’t get him. I then got Kazuha on his rerun and immediately replaced Venti. Like, gave him his artifacts and spent more time fighting Kenki than Dvalin for their mats. Then I gave him Sucrose’s artifacts which is worse with 600 em than his old 800 em build. I even double crowned Kazuha so he’s currently my most spoiled anemo user.

Then Scara was released, I (un?)fortunately lost to Tighnari which honestly, I was happy about. And started spending my mats for Venti (exp books and crowns) on him.

He’s probably fuming right now. I’m sorry Venti, I’m not fighting that wolf since he’s immune to both Cryo and Anemo (I main Ganyu and Kazuha, Diluc and Yanfei aren’t really built well but they can do a decent amount of damage).

Honestly Andrius was and absolute bitch of a fight until I realized I could just solo him with Venti on physical damage alone, since having a long range character is incredibly convenient for his close ranged attacks

It's certainly not the quickest fight in the world but it's better than not being able to do it at all and Venti's wind current last for the exact perfect amount of time for me to avoid that phase where he runs around in circles and occasionally charges, it really couldn't be more perfect, so with that technique I've almost got his talents completely maxed out, I only have to fight him like 3 more times

I am incredibly looking forward to not having to do that talent domain for a while too, I hate fighting cryo enemies with shields because I have absolutely zero built pyro or electro characters, so I'm left stumbling my way through it

Anyway I do really want Kazuha, he's in like my top 3 priority 5 stars right now, Xiao is in the top 5 and so is Tighnari but that's more for his passive than anything honestly, I still don't really know how to use dendro characters and I'm too afraid to learn

But poor Venti getting neglected, tho honestly he's probably not too cut up about not having to go around solving other ppls problems, but least you can do is give him a pretty artifact set and a few apples every now and then, he deserves it solely for being pretty

You and everyone else who hasn't built him should hand them over so I can get ever closer to C6, I'll trade you with my many many electro character constellation and an unreasonable amount of 5 star Viridescent Venerer artifacts, totally not a bad deal just don't think about it too hard

I have so many thoughts about the in-universe implications of some things, if not removed for being video game mechanics. Artifacts especially. Also, the personal pocket dimensions. The Traveler definitely, cutscene confirmed, canonically has one they summon from and have since before Teyvat. In order for the field tiller quest to make sense, Dainsleif disappearing the eye has to be literal. There's just - no way for that to work with the entire ruin guard eye tucked under his arm, even if we just couldn't see it. Amber doesn’t have Baron Bunny following her around, and in the manga I believe she literally summons it. But, like, it's a real physical item, not an Oz. I feel we also see some other Vision holders' weapons summoned in cutscenes? Probably? maybe also in the manga, I'm not certain, but they do have weapons they weren't storing on their persons previously. Obviously there's idles but I'm gonna assume Diluc isn't magically summoning a whole live bird. In gameplay, Klee summons bombs, but she canonically keeps them in pack and hides them - why bother if she could just disappear them for safe keeping? Why not have a whole demand to have vision holders transfer bulk shipments for max capacity, and for safe keeping for likely-to-be-stolen items? How do you rob someone who can do that? How long can a non-Traveler vision holder keep something in there? What happens if they die? The visionless NPCs certainly can't - it would be utilized and completely undermine all the many, many quests and problems and inconveniences about carts and transportation and manpower etc they have. What happens if you try to out a non-magic alive thing in there? Lots of writers call it a vision compartment, but as the fandom is always asking on every topic every: what's up with Dainsleif?

Bursts and their names are voice line canon, but character do way many elemental things outside of their skill/burst abilities. ("Dandelion Field" specifically.) Are these just chosen descriptors for specific things you can do with vision, and not limited to them? Do they feel different? Do you make up the names? What's up with that? How many are actually called that in-universe - I'm sure not everyone would be designating fancy alliterative names to all their individual superpowers.

not what you were talking about, but in relation to the idea of Traveler having infinite magic pockets, one of my favorite Traveler-the-Character headcanons is the idea of them having food/resource scarcity trauma because... don't recall how much they strictly do need food or don't besides that they do eat, but they've been implied to be alive for a very long time. Something just tickles me about the idea of (near?) infinite worlds, and how even if 90% of them have things you can eat or are compatible with somehow, a theoretical "10%" of infinity is still the chance to go centuries upon centuries without encountering a world not hostile to you, or that hasn't deteriorated to a horrible state of danger. Even if it's not food, specifically, just... safe stuff. Teapot Nahida points out in-game that they apparently canonically grab all the mint and such they see. It's a joke about video game behavior, but also! We don't know what they had on them before being cast to Teyvat and that they lost when that happened! And if you need to be that prepared for any number of any type of worlds before you come across another one this hospital to you, it's a gamble to have enough no matter how many years prior you spend gathering. On one hand I feel like that kind of takes away from the whimsy-ness their travels are somewhat connotated with? but idk. Also when food comes up they have a reoccurring thing about saving money items etc. gotta level up those talents

idk perhaps something in canon we know about their traveling or the hoyoverse contradictes this, and feel free to disagree, but I like the concept. drop the pre-Teyvat Traveler lore PLEASE

I don't think I've answered a question like this one. I don't have a "favorite" genshin character because as you can tell, I'm very picky and critical when it comes to stuff. I actually dislike a surprising amount of the genshin characters. However, there is a list of characters I quite like. Oh, and I talk about their hug rating after each:

Razor because he was one of my first four stars from wishing, and I used him a lot in the beginning. I stopped using him for a while but I use him a lot now since he's C6, talents might be maxed, and his level is maxed, plus sometimes he'll do like 26K on his elemental skill. He's probably my best built character. Plus, he's an absolute babe, literally can do no wrong. He's just a silly feral little wolf boy. Gives awkward hugs, but once he's relaxed he won't want to let go. 7/10.

Itto. Do I really have to explain why? Because he's a himbo, and I love himbo characters. His voice lines in the English are the best, hands down, no other character can top his voice and dialogue. He's probably the funniest too. He's so stupid but kind that it's endearing. The latest event really reminded me of what a great character he is. Mihoyo did him dirty with his model though. Gives the best hugs, I just know it. Literally just big old bear hugs, you can hear him laugh as he squeezes you in a hearty hug against his chest. 10/10.

Albedo, because I main him and I also love his voice actor. I low-key relate to Albedo, especially with the way he acts or stuff he says sometimes. He was also my first five star, so he has a special place in my heart for that. And he's also a character with a lot of interesting lore and likely has links to Khaenri'ah. Probably doesn't hug, and if he does it feels really forced or lifeless. But he tried? 2/10

Diluc has really interesting lore and he's super underrated character wise. I don't use him often because I don't have him built, and while his personality and such may not have me hooked, he makes extremely valid points and he gets a lot of hate for no reason? Yeah, I agree with Diluc, the Knights are terrible and incompetant. [ spoilers ] Seriously, they covered up the death of Diluc's father and gave a traveler the title of "honorary knight" to not look incompetent. I don't think he hugs often but when he does, it's really warm and firm, but not too tight. Just right, you know? But maybe a bit tense at first before really holding onto you like its the last hug he'll ever experience. 9/10.

3.6 is about done, so here are the end results: 

On my main, I went from 20 pity to 65 pity to get C0 Kaveh. I have 240 rolls left, plus about 6K primos. Nothing notable, though I did manage to finish book farming and getting everyone to x/8/8 talents. 

My goal is both Eula and Klee in 3.8, after which I’ll really only be looking for new Mondstadt characters, Gorou cons, and maybe some weapons. I guess I might consider C2 Albedo at a stretch. Other Mondstadt 5 star cons are, how to say, not really appealing to me. 

On my alt... oh boy. 

I decided to see how close I could get to C2 Baizhu. There’s no specific reason except that saving is boring, I need a stock of stardust, and I think it’s very funny that he starts proccing his skill from off-field. I keep forgetting to switch to him, so hey, it would be convenient. 

Anyway, I’m going to pass on Alhaitham in 3.7, and 3.8 probably won’t have any men, so why not.

Conveniently, my rolling priority now is Childe (bow) > Zhongli (survivability if needed, can phys dps, spare me from geo traveler) > Ayato (super flexible combat option) > Xiao (cute, anemo option, cool skill) > Itto (cow) > Thoma (burgeon) > Alhaitham (skill teleport I guess)

(if anyone wonders why Qiqi and Xiao are on the lists, it’s because I made a special exception for Qiqi as Baizhu’s ward. It wouldn’t be fair to separate them! I need a second healer And then I thought that we might as well bring Xiao too, though it’s largely because I ended up never really using him on my main and I want to.) 

Thoma had been way higher before this patch, but I have Diluc for most pyro related things, and I remember from my main how hard it is to use Thoma’s shield and how bad his energy needs get at C0. He’s also a 4 star, so getting him at all might become an entire fiasco, to say nothing of cons. And of course, doing the pyro cube without Ayato is just not happening. 

Alhaitham, Itto and Xiao are all in roughly the same category of having little to their kit aside from on field DPSing, which is not really useful since they also really want specific supports that my alt won’t have. Alhaitham ranks lower than the other two because I already have two dendro men, Kaveh can do a knockoff version of the same DPS role, and his boss is super annoying to fight. 

3.7 has been remarked by everyone as looking super dry, but I will now have so much to farm on my alt... Kaveh artifacts, Kaveh Fav weapon mats, Qiqi artifacts, both their boss mats to max ascend... maybe even talent books if I’m feeling spicy, since they don’t use Mond book hell and Qiqi even uses Andrius, an accessible weekly boss.

Since I got Aquila Favonia I decided to have Kaeya be a mixed attacker, good in Physical and Cryo. I think that’s for the best in my team, he’s the most versatile.

As you can see what he’s really missing is having more Crit Rate. I’m trying to get him a better Sands of Eon for that but I haven’t got lucky so far. At least thanks to his C1 he can have better Crit Rate for normal attacks if the enemy is affected by Cryo, also if you have two Cryo in the team.

He’s C6 and has maxed talents.

one of them is from danganronpa. embarrassing! /lh anyways i loved danganronpa so much but i loved nothing more than hajime and/or izuru’s storyline. so royally fucked up. if u don’t know it and don’t care abt dr spoilers: hajime is average but wants to go to a school where talented people go but his family doesn’t have enough money to buy him into the ‘average’ part of the school so he gets a scholarship in return for becoming a human test subject for the academy to use as they please (and adding insult to injury hes named after the academy’s founder). they essentially turn him into an emotionless superhuman with no memory of who he was previously, however it’s possible some remnants of who he was before remained as we can see him cry after his former best friend’s death. but then this super weapon meant to be used by the academy is converted to the side of evil and manipulated into seeking destruction over protection all in the name of incurable boredom. eventually kamukura is put into a sort of “restoration program” where he and other students of the academy lose all memories beyond their first day at the academy, turning kamukura back into hajime and are put on a desert island in order to possibly help mentally rescue them, only for THAT to be hijacked and for hajime to live as himself only to discover in the end he was his own enemy. ANYWAYS after THAT long winded explanation: izuru’s character was just extremely interesting to me at the time and even now, i’ve read fics about alternative endings for him that i love and i really wish more was done with him tbh.. izuru/hajime is really an interesting character and i think he deserves a lot more love because he was FASCINATING

4. diluc ragnvindr from genshin impact

this one is actually gonna be very different from the others on the list probably LMAO but. first off. diluc made me realize i was gay and transmasc. so. there’s THAT SHAJSBAKD

but. anyways. i loved diluc’s story so much. like he’s such an interesting character. diluc was a prodigy destined for greatness at a young age, getting his vision at age ten, becoming the youngest cavalry captain ever, essentially doing everything his father never got to do. he was the perfect son, and he was happy. and then his dad died AND his adoptive brother admitted to being a spy both on his 18th birthday, causing him to become depressed and to abandon his vision, and soon after his post as a knight (along with some outside interference). diluc became a reclusive loner, distanced himself from the city he loved and even the people he loved. and yet, through all of it, he couldn’t stop himself from caring. from the shadows he helped to protect the city and put himself at risk numerous times for the sake of the people he loved.

and also, diluc is a BADASS.. like .. the bridge scene?? getting banned from fantasy russia for killing too many people??? idk. all in all diluc is and probably always will be my favorite genshin character and i think he deserves a lot more love in the fandom because GOD knows he deserves it

3. ashe bradley from witch’s heart

took out matty my apologies. i didn’t really talk abt him but was also crazy about him. ashe and matty (sorry got rid of his like 2 sentences) spawned the most batshit insane ocs of mine and they completely kickstarted me creating these horrible awful people. i’m not gonna go too in depth here cause i’m eepy but: ashe’s family was killed in a fire and he is trying to revive them by being a witch hunter. ashe as a character is so FUCKED and was the most fascinating factor of WH i think cause he just made it so much more interesting.. getting to see his motivation and how he was trying to do the right thing in the WORST possible way is soul crushing and amazing and i love this game so much for it. everyone in that game really deserved so much better than the hand they were dealt but. i’m a sucker for the ones who Cannot be normal about it.

2. shin tsukimi/“sou hiyori” from your turn to die

SPEAKING OF BEING INCAPABLE OF BEING NORMAL. literally. the first (second. fine.) unhinged motherfucker i loved. and he was so similar to ashe in some ways.. shin (i’m gonna call him that sorry) discovered he had a 0% chance of survival so he decided to pretend to be someone else and then pretended to be the most horrible bastard ever and i LOVED him for it. the atrocities were great. idc. but it’s also sad that it’s the circumstance he was forced into yk??? idk. anyways. shin had such an impact on me i was insanely mental illness about him for so lonnnggg i dressed up as him for halloween one year…. god. anyways. i just am a sucker for fucked up little guys and he was such a good one

hey that. that name is familiar. ohohohoho yea this motherfucker changed my brain chemistry i think . so let me explain.

u will not find a lot of characters like midori.. i love him and i was STILL!! cheering when he died bc he is such a HORRIBLE dude!!! he manipulated people (including CHILDREN) into unknowingly consenting to a “game” in which their lives would be toyed with for FUN, he faked his own murder and gaslit/ruined the life of the person who “killed” him, he’s not even a HUMAN anymore because he has DOLL parts (fun fact: another person has HIS human hands now!!!!!! yay!!!!!!) i believe he did a lot of human experimentation, he also stalked someone (the previous character) and pretended to be a high school student in order to manipulate him into doing things for him!! he created an ai who was programmed to be obsessively in love with him so he could use her for his benefit!! he enjoys seeing people uncomfortable and relishes in others pain!! it goes beyond him being apathetic towards others, he literally WANTS people to be hurt. the only time we see real emotion from him is in the face of death, because the only time he’s afraid of pain is if it’s his own. he’s an awful person all around but a FASCINATING one who although has driven me insane has also fascinated me for years. and. yeah. he’s my namesake. a very very interesting guy and i recommend playing yttd if you haven’t already cause it’s suuuuchhhhh a good game. pls

Genshin person, hi! I joined for a friend originally without interest but they left and I kept playing. Now I actually enjoy it! I started in May 2022 so I missed out on a lot, which is only sad when I think about Albedo as I dont have his weapon nor his painting he gifts you for the teapot.

I don't really technically main anyone as my goal is to level everyone's talents to 6 and to get them to level 80 at least. I still use them during and after to max their friendship and then move to the next. I'll make sure to file through them with domains so they don't get lonely!

I've been using Kazuha, Razor, Yanfei, Albedo, and Barbara for a while now, mixing between them. I'd switch them out but I've been in a lull state of just doing the necessary for BP. I'm starting to get more motivation though! I too want Eula though, I wish you luck once the day finally comes and the heavens open up.

Do you have any deep thoughts about the characters or lore? Anything that stayed with you? Favorite region? Personally I favor Mondstadt because it's the closest to a welcoming home we have.

hi again!! ough, i feel you with the missed content. i wanted to see the unreconciled stars event so fucking bad, but alas, i was too late. i actually started playing later than you, early august 2022! diluc was my first five star (not counting the traveler ig), and i've just been hitting since B). i have insane luck in the gacha for some reason so i've been able to get every five star banner i've been there for except for shenhe and xiao, which kinda sucks because i like them a lot, but c'est la vie :/. also oh man you have kazuha?? i missed his banner :( you're so lucky, he seems like such a funky dude.

and as for thoughts on the lore...oh boy do i!! i am Interested in learning about khaenri'ah and the abyss, as well as the tsaritsa and her motives. i personally have a theory that her and the abyss sibling were allied at some point (and maybe still are...) but i digress. my favorite region is sumeru!! it just reminds me of home, sort of. and also the aranara are so cute and if i could i'd just spend the entire game playing with them. answers? siblings? the fate of the world? no sir we're just playing hide and seek with little plant babies here.

favorite characters...my all time favorite is childe, though i cannot deny it is a very close race between thoma and kaeya as well. it's like; i like pretty boys with a horribly traumatic backstory and golden retriever energy and childe fits all three, while thoma and kaeya fit two out of three. i made a venn diagram about it here in case i'm not explaining it well hehe
