Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts
It’s real Good news that the manga  Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts (贄姫と獣の王, Niehime to Kemono no Ō) by  Yū Tomofuji gets anime adaptation:)
Tumblr media
So let’s see what’s its synopsis:
The King of the Beasts and Demons regularly receives female human sacrifices to eat in order to assert the dominance of his people over the human race. However, for the 99th sacrifice, the human girl brought to the capital, Sariphi, intrigues the Beast King. In fact she isn't afraid of him or any other beast and even accepts her death without begging or crying as she has neither home nor family to return to if she were released. The King finds her intriguing and let her stay at his side as his consort despite being human. This is the story of how Sariphi will become the queen of the demons and beasts.
The anime is produced by  J.C.Staff,under director Chiaki Kon is set to premiere on April 20, 2023, on Tokyo MX and BS11

For SMC, dk how much the director choice has an influence over adaptation quality (since I'm pretty sure going from an ONA budget to T.V./movie budget does change things), but everyone said Chiaki Kon supremacy when s3 aired. I say Takahashi supremacy
Tumblr media
Because Cosmos is looking to be peak in terms of adaptation from the manga

Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts #1 - The Sacrifice and the Night of the Ritual
Tumblr media
Screenplay: Seishi Minakami Storyboard: Satou Masako Episode Director: Ken'ichi Nishida Chief Animation Direction: Shin`ya Hasegawa Animation Director: Kasano Atsushi, Maehara Kaoru, Nagata Yuka, Tsuzuki Yukako
After what feels like an eternity, Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts have finally arrived. I was initially concerned about the animation quality and the challenge of fitting 15 volumes into 24 episodes, but the show has had a very strong start. As a huge fan of Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts, which is perhaps one of my favorite shoujo manga of all time, I was thrilled to see that the artwork and paint-like aesthetic were even more beautiful than what was shown in the PV. Additionally, the animation is much smoother than what was suggested by the PVs, which makes me question the shot selection in those videos. Nonetheless, I am extremely grateful for the show's quality thus far.
While I did admittedly doubt the show's debut at first glance of the PV and had concerns about the number of episodes the show would be adapted into, I think anyone can attest to the fact that I am a big fan of Chiaki Kon. I believe she is a very talented director if not one of the most talented at J.C. Staff currently working today. Many of the faults in a lot of her work honestly are not directly related to her, such as The Way of the Househusband or Gokudolls, many of which relied on producer input on the animation direction.
People tend to forget her works on Golden Time, Higurashi, or the various times she's worked on Sailor Moon or Precure. She consistently brings a fun vibe to the show. A lot of the cute expressions on Sailor Moon episodes she's boarded comes directly from her. So expect to see that when she does board her own episode. And talking about Golden Time, this show has the same designer as Golden Time in Shin'ya Hasegawa, and his designs really bring out the best in the characters. The manga covers have always had a paint finish to them, with very unique eyes and the way things are shaded overall. I think his rendition of the characters in this anime adaptation is really splendid. They're pretty when they need to be, threatening when they need to be, and look quite cute when they need to be. It's a great way to, I guess you can say, "anime-ize" the art style for a more general audience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The episode was storyboarded by Satou, who has a great focus on eyes. The artwork for this show is often cute with a very pretty aesthetic, so when they do close-ups of certain characters with dead eyes, it's genuinely haunting as a contrast. The decision to change the tone of colors in those scenes, perhaps thanks to Nishida (whom I'm not familiar with), contributed greatly to this effect. It feels cold, in contrast to the warmth that Sariphi and Leonhart exude.
Now to the actual story portion, the pacing so far feels just right for a series like this, it gets the whole set up right away in the first episode, without really feeling like it's rushing it, and establish the tone shifts that you can expect from the show throughout. Sariphi and Leonhart's relationships remain cute in the anime and I hope to see the development of them that I've read in the manga continue to be seen in the anime as time goes on.

So the Way of the Househusband anime announcement is far and away the most popular thing I have ever posted and it was fun reading people's reactions and getting excited and then forgetting and remembering again especially that final week leading up to its release.
But now that it is out for the world to see, and I'm not trying to be a negative nancy, Netflix really botched the adaptation... And considering the talent the had on hand it really is a shame...
Chiaki Kon, aka the person who made Sailor Moon Crystal more palatable with her turn around of the series with Season 3 and directed the two Eternal films among other things, is the series director for Way of the Househusband.
And JC Staff, of Utena fame, is the company that adapted it.
According to staff members, they were instructed to animate it the way they did (which I have a feeling is due in part for Netflix not wanting to spend a lot of money on it).
But unfortunately, it is basically a motion comic that, at least for the first two episodes does not deviate from the source material at all... So if you have read it, there isn't much difference watching it outside of voice acting (which isn't a bad thing because it does allow people who are not able to read the manga access to enjoy it), but it is a shame that Netflix seemingly botched JC Staff's attempt at adapting it and therefore did not give it the time or effort it deserves.

You'll be pleased to know that the Househusband anime is produced by Netflix Japan and licensed to Netflix International, but has virtually no chance of falling into "Netflix adaptation hell." It's all being released at once, but it's otherwise a standard seasonal anime production with competent staff from established anime studios. The director in particular, Chiaki Kon, has some serious chops.
Omg thank u for this info! I am too lazy to find it out myself or go get the manga but I have also very much wanted to show it to my spouse in a way that he’d enjoy. (And I think he would struggle with R-to-L reading) So I’m glad to hear that they’re just doing a clean one-and-done! I am VERY looking forward to it!

sailor moon crystal is a shitshow (but you probably already knew that)
incoming rant brought on by the anime matsuri interview because it made one thing perfectly clear: Toei has not learned a goddamned thing.
this post is not concerned with the animation style/quality/whatever. I’ve made my opinions on that quite clear and I am not up for fielding arguments about the merits of the animation. this is strictly about how Toei has been handling one of their flagship franchises. tl;dr:
Tumblr media
first, for context, here’s a quick ‘n’ dirty timeline of the series thus far:
series announcement: 7/2012, initially planned for 7/2013 release to coincide with 20th anniversary.
first delay announcement: 4/2013
toei claims they’re still aiming for a 2013 release: 8/2013 (20th anniversary has now come and gone)
jk! now it’s july 2014: 1/2014
dark kingdom: 7/2014-1/2015 (13 episodes)
black moon: 1/2015-7/2015 (13 episodes)
infinity: 4/2016-6/2016 (13 episodes)
1/25/2017 - yes, there will be more crystal
6/30/2017 - and it will be movies
late march 2018 (25th anniversary is later this year) - at a Q&A, editor Osano Fumio (”Osa-P”) and director Chiaki Kon estimate that the movies won’t be coming for another 1 to 2 years.
look at the pacing of the infinity arc. if they had gone at that pace this whole time, we’d have gotten through the end of the series some time in 2016, maybe early 2017 depending on breaks, etc. and still had time to do side stories, like Casablanca Memories or the Chibi-Usa Picture Diaries, that have never gotten a proper animated adaptation. hell, maybe Parallel Sailor Moon could get a short. as of this writing, we’ve gotten 39 episodes in 45 months (roughly 3.75 years). to put that into perspective, they could’ve aired one episode per month and we’d still be in the Dream arc by now. (by the way, if by some chance a Toei exec is reading this, that’s not a suggestion)
for comparison, let’s look at Dragonball, another Toei flagship franchise that got new content right around the same time: just over two years passed between the newest Dragonball films, Battle of Gods and Resurrection F (late March ‘13 and mid-April ‘15). DBSuper went into production in the intervening time and teasers started in June ‘15.
the difference is that Toei is managing DB like they actually give a shit about it. they’ve been appropriately pacing out the PR and hype to keep the fanbase engaged. they haven’t taken erratic breaks in production. the amount of time that went by between the end of infinity, the announcement that a follow-up would be happening, and that the follow-up would be a theatrical release does not suggest that Toei knew what Crystal’s next step was going to be. this isn’t a thought-out plan of action, it’s laying the tracks in front of the train (see above).
how about the Clear Card arc of Cardcaptor Sakura? it was announced in late November 2016 and began airing this January. no several-month schedule slips, no need for a bizarre airing arrangement, no “just buy the blu-ray” excuses. because Madhouse, unlike Toei, is giving one of its most well-known series the care it deserves.
Toei’s management of SMC has been slipshod and frankly baffling from the beginning. (Korra, Steven Universe, and Miraculous Ladybug fans, I know you know at least some of this feeling.) all signs point to Toei not knowing what they want to do with the franchise, much less how they’re going to do it, and not caring enough to either get their shit together in one fell swoop or know when to fold ‘em.
at this rate, I’ll be amazed if Toei finishes Crystal by the time I make enough lawyer money to singlehandedly fund a better remake (or a proper US release of the musicals, which, let’s be honest, are the remakes we actually deserved).
in conclusion:

I think all the little changes made to the characters, the planet symbols from circles to hearts; their character designs being closer to the 90's anime; Eternal Sailor Moon's brooch being the 90's gold brooch instead of the manga's pink brooch MIGHT have had something to do with all the people who complained that Crystal wasn't enough like the 90's anime (even though the wasn't the point), so Toei finally caved and was like, "Fine, you want it to be more like the 90's? Here you go!"
That, and I think Chiaki Kon, being the director and all, is also a huge 90s anime fan.
It's a slippery slope imo, fans of the series oughta work on Crystal/Eternal cus a fresh new eye could probably misinterpret things or miss the charm, however biases can get in the way of from the overall like, point of Crystal ie not to be in the 90s anime shadow and instead be it’s own thing.
Sakai I felt was able to balance a homage from blatant rip offs but he also didn't seem to put much care into the overall product and that charm was missing in some parts and can feel forced or rushed. can’t say for sure if due to Season 1/2 production schedule was or if he was kinda being a bad director
Same goes for Sakou, ontop of being a female character designer to avoid male gaze but also without being biased for a preference on designs, shes a fresh eye if you will. (Tho what fucked this up was she was a  EW character designer at the time and you can tell by her early settei's line work she was nervous af), but again she's missing that charm in some areas
Takahashi was this as well but then he just went way off in his direction, diving the fans even more imo. Partially Kon's fault here, she told him to make the designs cuter, but the reused stock footage was definitely all Kon, she storyboards them. (or is credited for them anyway) The charm was missing entirely for me not to mention I just thought Kons direction was just odd and strange during Season 3.It just didn't feel right.
Then we got Tadano whos the weird one, she said it was gonna be a more elegant style than what she used in the 90s but this style is way cuter than how the girls looked in the 90s. I can't say for sure if the charm is there since I haven't seen the movie yet, but some of the reused stock footages does feel incredibly forced than charming to me.... if that makes sense, like an obligation like you said.
Idk there needs to be a balance of some kind, but also fans working on Crystak/Eternal need to try not to be biased toward the 90s anime... New ppl oughta be put on to have a fresh eye cus 90s fan or not people wanna see something new but also not too new to the point its jarring, something familiar. Sdjvnsdjg  I'm talking in circles forgive me jednferjgn I hope I'm making sense
So yea like you said this could be big wigs interfering with the production as per usual cus the 90s sells so well cus fuck animation for the art of it all.
But it also could be Kon having a bias as well, cus she told Takahashi to make his designs cuter, who's to say she didn't say the same for Tadano? I'll check the credits when I find time, I notice a lot of big changes tend to happen  when the Producer changes
I'm also low-key convinced they chose Tadano cus they couldn't get Itou cus when it comes to the precious 90s anime thats all who anyone cares about (to the point many convinced themselves Itoh's style was the mainstream style for 90s animes when it really wasn't)
let's just hope they stick with Tadanos style cus I'm just kinda sick of the artstyle changing its so headache inducing this ain't Precure where every season is a soft reboot geez

The Way of the Househusband
Tumblr media
Title: The Way of the Househusband (episodes 1-5)
Director: Chiaki Kon
Provider: Netflix
length: 1hr (for everything)
Year: 2021
Sentences: A infamous yakuza member has turned in his katana for a apron. Simple animation makes the jokes hit harder and scenes light. The voice acting was spot on for the characters. I loved all the deadpan comments.
