Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts
It’s real Good news that the manga  Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts (贄姫と獣の王, Niehime to Kemono no Ō) by  Yū Tomofuji gets anime adaptation:)
Tumblr media
So let’s see what’s its synopsis:
The King of the Beasts and Demons regularly receives female human sacrifices to eat in order to assert the dominance of his people over the human race. However, for the 99th sacrifice, the human girl brought to the capital, Sariphi, intrigues the Beast King. In fact she isn't afraid of him or any other beast and even accepts her death without begging or crying as she has neither home nor family to return to if she were released. The King finds her intriguing and let her stay at his side as his consort despite being human. This is the story of how Sariphi will become the queen of the demons and beasts.
The anime is produced by  J.C.Staff,under director Chiaki Kon is set to premiere on April 20, 2023, on Tokyo MX and BS11

There is a lot about the Jenny series by Kawasou Masumi that hasn't aged well, but I'll be damned if it isn't bursting at the seams with badass moments like this featuring everyone's favourite artistocratic mercenary MILF.
Tumblr media
When I think about what's missing from Hana to Yume today vs. the magazine during the late 80s/early 90s it's not just Hollywood-esque action series, but the way titles like the Jenny series would follow up heart-stopping explosions or fire fights with moments of palpable attraction between characters (per above).
Which isn't to say I dislike the magazine now (it has some great series running in it at the moment), but I do miss the sheer variety of content we saw in the lineups from 30-40 years ago. I also miss heroines like Jenny who was always compelling even though her moral greyness made her difficult to root for at times.

Some sad news to share - Shoujo mangaka Hisaya Nakajo, best known for her long-running series Hana-Kimi (For You In Full Blossom) has passed away at the age of 50 due to a heart condition. Hana-Kimi ran from 1996 to 2004 in Japanese shoujo magazine Hana to Yume, and was officially released in English in the US by Viz Media. The series revolved around a girl named Mizuki, who becomes so infatuated with high-jump competitor Izumi that she disguises herself as a boy to attend his all-boy high school to meet him. The series was popular enough to get multiple live-action dramas, including in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. While Hana-Kimi was her only big hit, it was popular not just in Japan, but overseas as well. RIP to a beloved shoujo manga creator.

Anyway, the reason I got this issue of Hana to Yume was because the cover advertised two posters of Akatsuki no Yona and my brain zeroed in on that like nothing else lol god I love furoku. I wish more magazines offered it. The posters are gorgeous! I had so much fun unfolding them.

Hi! @angelbambisworld tagged you in a post abt the 70s shoujo manga with kiss in it and said you had more info! I really want to know more about it + where I can read it!
Thanks so much!
I have only information from the Internet, but it was serialized in the December 1977 issue of the shoujo manga magazine "Hana to Yume" and later published in a book titled "Ue wo Shita e no Rock 'n' Roll" (Rock 'n' Roll Up and Down). I'd love to read it too, but it's hard to find it for sale…
I'll write a more detailed setup.
Gene is 27 years old, a professor emeritus, a PhD genius, and wears high heels, a memento of her mother who died when she was 15.
Paul is Cupid, and Gene's mother becomes a goddess after her death, ordering Paul to shoot an arrow at her son.
Ace is an underachieving student at Space University, and because of his failing grades, he is assigned to find out why Gene is a young genius as a follow-up exam. He tries to cover everything with his own sex appeal.
PETER IS A CAT THAT GENE HAS WTF
Forgot to mention, the name of this comic is "Kiss is the Devil's Gift." Probably only sold in Japanese yen.

Easygoing by Kurata Emi (1976)
This has been in the works for a while... We are proud to bring you a true gem from 1976, Kurata Emi's striking one shot, Easygoing.
Tumblr media
This story, especially the last couple of pages, hit me on a personal level. What really impressed me even more is that this story was published in Hana to Yume of all things. Isn't it sad to see what the magazine has become after publishing good stories like this one, reduced to a shoujo magazine filled with tedious romance stories that doesn't even a single brain cell? Honestly, I wouldn't have expected to see such historical and social criticism in a 1970s shoujo manga magazine.
Also, apologies for the text left in Japanese on p. 29, because I couldn't make sense of them for the life of me. I even asked people. So, unless someone sends me scans/pics of the print book, we'll never know. Digitalization does old manga dirty like that.
Get your self-loathing here:
DDL MangaDex
Now, be on the lookout for 5MENP's releases, because I'm passing the baton to them to finish this compilation off. I don't want to ruin Kurata's works with my crappy TLs.

I became obsessed after seeing her in the back of Sukeban Deka’s first volume promoting other manga serialized in Hana to Yume magazine, but she’s from some baseball manga nobody cares about that I can’t even find raws for 😭

Here are the pages from Hana to Yume's 50th anniversary books (Gold & Silver) that got me the most emotional. Photos only.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's start with Silver! Unsurprisingly I always get a tear in my eye when Matsushita Youko contributes anything to Hanayume. She'll never finish Yami no Matsuei (though pics like this make me dream) but I do hope she's having a good time gaming and doing whatever else makes her happy.
Similarly it has been SO long since Saenagi Ryou has drawn anything (I think her ITAN series was over a decade ago now?) it's great to see the Yorozuya boys looking fresh! I think you really had to be reading the magazine in 1999-2001 to really appreciate how popular that series was. Anyway, she's still got it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ragawa Marimo doing Akachan to Boku art of the boys a bit older?? MY EYES APPEAR TO BE LEAKING. Love these adorable brothers regardless of age, but wow Ragawa's art is looking polished these days. Love it!
Meanwhile Yuki Kaori kind of still has it with Cain and RIff, but the Mudou siblings definitely look more along the lines of her art in the lacklustre Tenshi Kinryouku: Tokyo Chronos. I do think it's nice seeing her draw both series again though, definitely makes me nostalgic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moving onto Gold... I had a huge grin on my face just glimsping a new doodle of the boys from Greenwood by Nasu Yukie. Look at those adorable dorks!
It was so nice seeing Nakamura Yoshiki's two most prominent leading ladies sharing the spotlight together. While Kyouko from Skip Beat! has been a prominent figure in Hanayume over the past two decades, Tsukasa was the Nakamura heroine I first became acquainted with in Tokyo Crazy Paradise so this page made me happy.
Tumblr media
An honourary mention goes to Hiwatari Saki for providing an OK Shion and Mokuren. Not a patch on her art from the original Bokutama series, but this is quite cute.
Anyway, lots of great art from past & present Hanayume mangaka and some really heartfelt notes too. I highly recommend getting your own copies of these furoku books as they're quite lovely little keepsakes.

the really funny thing about that magazine cover is that Kyoko's jumpsuit in the original sample image is an even more garish magenta color. They had to desaturate her uniform for the Hana To Yume cover lmao
