March is #DisabilityAwarenessMonth ♿️
I've seen too many things in my town that are not disability-friendly.
There are people that just stand around on the sidewalk even though they see my wheelchair approaching. I can't tell you how many times I've had to go out into the street to get around these idiots.
All too often the handicapped access ramp is blocked.
Able-bodied people park their cars in the handicapped spots because they're "just going in for a minute".
My town is notorious for putting posts in the middle of sidewalks. Getting around those is very tricky.
I could go on and on but I think you get the picture.
And please remember that not all disabilities are visible.

Spinal Cord Injury Day (SCI) is observed on 5th September every year with the objective to spread awareness amongst the general public. It is presumed that awareness would facilitate an inclusive life for people with disabilities and ensure greater chances of success of prevention programs. The term ‘spinal cord injury (SCI) refers to damage to the spinal cord resulting from trauma or from disease or degeneration. Spinal cord injury (SCI) has devastating physical, mental, social, sexual, and vocational consequences for the injured. The injury also increases the economic burden on the person and on his or her entire support network. The common saying is, ‘Prevention is better than cure '. However, where a spinal cord injury is concerned, ‘Prevention is Cure’. In many cases, it is carelessness, recklessness, ignorance, or bad posture that causes spinal cord injuries. #UnitedSpinal #WeRollUnited #SCIAwareness #spinalcordinjuryawareness #spinalcordinjury #spinalcordinjuryrecovery #tophashtags #sci #spinalcord #paraplegic #quadriplegiclife #disabilityawarenessmonth #spine #spinalcordinjurysurvivor💚 #sciawarenessmonth❇️ #scpsusa🙌 #paraplegia #tetraplegico #accessibletourism #spinalhealthawareness #quadriplegiclife #paralysisrecoveryfoundation #quads #lifegoesonwheels♿️ #spinalinjury #bhfyp♥️♥️ #spinalcordpeersupportusaoninstagram #healthguideq8 #onecurestheothercare (at India,Pune) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTb6wEGsD3u/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Disability Rights are Human Rights.” I started designing clothes for neurodiverse people after the death of Freddie Gray, who was a disabled young man that was manhandled by unknowing police officers. I wanted to embolden the community with my designs - and to ensure incidents like Freddie’s never happened again. Although, I hear more cases about people with other disabilities enduring the same fate; onlookers unsure if someone’s deaf, blind, or handicap. So in 2021, I’m going to open my work to more conditions - starting with this one. It uses ASL, Braille, the neurodiversity infinity sign, and the disabled symbol. The aim was to invoke universality - to show that we’re all in the same crowd fighting for the same mission: Disability Rights. Two years ago, I started Assistees to embolden people who were considered different. And in 2021, I hope to do just that. #disability #disabilityawareness #disabilityrights #disabilitypride #disabilitysupport #disabilityisnotinability #disabilityawarenessmonth #disabilityadvocate #Disabilityservices #disabilitysport #disabilityfashion #disabilityjustice #disabilityactivist #disabilityactivism #disabilitylife #disabilityinclusion #disabilitylifestyle #disabilitystories #disabilityarts #disabilitycommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/CJl-YHxsRae/?igshid=1gwptl53n2ofc

When art students see a fun wall. ♿️ Disability Awareness Month ♿️ I want you to see my wheelchair. I want you to see my disability. My disability does define me, and that’s okay. My disability does define me, and so do many other things. I love my wheelchair. I love my disability. I am proud to be disabled. Please respect this. Comments like “I don’t even see your disability” or “I didn’t notice your wheelchair” are not compliments. Mobility Aid
Another thing, I struggle with the internalized shame of wearing a mobility aid. I carry a neck brace to wear when I feel my neck muscles giving out/shaking. I usually tell myself, I'll wear it once I get into the subway platform but I usually am in a cartful of people and..you guessed it, I don't put it on even though I feel a bit of incoming pain. There's always another day to try to live right by me so that I can actually improve my quality of life using my mobility aid. I hope tomorrow I can muster up the courage to use it when I need it. #chronicillness #MECFS #CFS #ME #mobilityaid #disabilityawarenessmonth #longcovid #longcovidhaulernyc

#Repost: @HolocaustMuseum - #DisabilityAwarenessMonth: “Robert Wagemann was born with a shattered hip due to complications during birth. His disability made him a target a few years later, after the Nazis began a program of murder to purge Germany of those deemed "unworthy of life."
“Robert was about five years old when his mother received a summons to come to the university clinic in Heidelberg with her son. By law, doctors and midwives were ordered to report children with mental or physical disabilities to the German government.”
“The staff was rough with Robert. “I think I screamed my head off because I was afraid," he later explained.”
“From the hallway in the clinic, Robert's mother overheard a horrifying conversation. “The doctor said when they come back from lunch, they would send home my mother and they would … have given me a needle and put me to sleep,” Robert said.”
“When the doctors left for lunch, Robert's mother grabbed his clothes and fled with him. The two sheltered in the reeds of a nearby river before going into hiding. ”If it wasn’t for my mom, I wouldn’t be here today," he said.”
“Robert survived the Nazis' mass murder of people with disabilities, but about 10,000 German children with disabilities were murdered under this Nazi program.”📖💔 #DisabilityAwarenessMonth 📷(Photo: USHMM, courtesy of Robert Wagemann)
