being disabled without having a diagnosis yet is so incredibly lonely. i’m unable to find community with people who understand what i’m going through and able bodied people don’t take me seriously when i explain what i’m dealing with. they expect you to be able to give them a name and i can’t yet. it’s so hard to get the proper accommodations and the right supports. it feels like purgatory.

TOMORROW!
October 23rd, 2024 is the 4th annual Disabled Ace Day!
Disabled Ace Day, which takes place on Wednesday during Ace Week, is dedicated to awareness, visibility, and celebration of the intersections of Asexuality and Disability and advocates for material and social support of Disabled Aces everywhere.
With a vitally important election coming up in the US, we will be talking politics tomorrow on the The Ace Couple podcast by discussing the laws that create marriage inequality in our country for Disabled people, for Asexual & Aromantic people, and for Black Americans.
Obergefell v. Hodges may have allowed for same-sex marriage at the federal level, but it does NOT mean that we have true marriage equality in this country.
We encourage Disabled Aces from around the globe to talk about your own experience, be it personal or political, to raise awareness this Ace Week.

Cripplepunk realization: paint markers exist
If you struggle with painting due to sensory issues, mobility issues, or some other cause, these markers can make creating art so much easier
Fabric paint markers also exist, which can make patch making and other customization easier
Go forth, paint and create!

I will truly never understand why some able-bodied people choose to treat individuals with disabilities like crap.
It's not a matter of "if" you'll end up disabled, it's "when" if you don't die early to other causes.
I've never met a senior who walks on their own until death. There's usually always the middle stage of walkers, canes, wheelchairs, oxygen tanks, or being bed-bound.
Chronic hypotension/hypertension, heart arrhythmias, chronic back/shoulder/hip pain, tremors, vision and hearing loss, arthritis, alzheimers/dementia. All VERY common if not consistent with old age.
I just can't see why these awful people would go out of their way to bully a disabled individual when, in the not-so-distant future, they'll end up in a similar predicament.

Disabled people get criticized and called lazy for being unemployed but nobody wants to discuss how employers won’t hire us because we’re considered a “liability”. Many companies also refuse to accommodate individuals with disabilities. Let’s not talk about how the government takes away our lifesaving healthcare benefits if we make more than $2000 a month and this the reason why most disabled people live in poverty!!!

The phrase "Don't let your disability stop you" has such this weird undertone of ableism to it as if you can pick and choose what your disability limits you from doing. As if what you're going through is a result of you letting it/allowing it to happen. Which is such an awful, untrue thing to accuse someone of.
Those who are disabled/chronically ill have a much better understanding of their bodies' limitations in comparison to able-bodied individuals because they've literally had to train themselves to recognize patterns, warning signs, flares, all of which can have a severe negative impact if not taken seriously.
We can't simply "manifest with positivity and optimism" to get through the day and push ourselves through something straining when it can result in a massive setback on both a physical and mental level.
If someone who is disabled/chronically ill tells you that they can't do something, they can't. That's the end of it. There's no "oh maybe you could just do it for a little while.." or "just maybe half an hour or a few minutes.." or "just a small outing/visit.." NO. No means NO.
I am not going to do something that I KNOW my body is not capable of handling just to compensate for someone elses feelings. At the end of the day, them giving up and going, "Alright, another time, maybe." will cause them about 20 minutes of disappointment. ME caving in will cause me months of recovery when things inevitably go south because I forced myself to do something that I knew my body couldn't handle.
