New semi-regular community conversations

So maybe some of you remember aaaaaages ago when I started a semi-structured biweekly community discussion called #DiscussionTime. It was fun! And for a time it was relatively successful. Then academics, and career, and real life got in the way, and it deteriorated.

Anyway, I wax nostalgic over this to say I’m giving the spirit of #DiscussionTime new life in the form of a new, less structured, discussion format. It’s going to be looser, and most importantly, I’m going to be jumping in to continue the conversation personally rather than simply mediating for others. Basically I think it’s going to be less serious and more fun! And it’s not going to be on any form of schedule because it’s not feasible for me. 

I’m looking forward to it! And I’m tagging all the lovely folks from the original #DiscussionTime taglist to see if you want to be tagged in this new format as well once I have my first opener ready. Anyone who wants to be added to or removed from the discussion taglist, please drop me a line! So…. The Dark Dangerous Man. What is it about this type of character which is so alluring? Is it just fantasy? Why are some women attracted to him? Here are a few of mine .. and no, I’m not THAT old I was just a weird teenager and had crushes on lots of dead film stars. Clark Gable as Rhett Butler, Brando as Stanley Koswalski, Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff and OF COURSE Tom Hardy as James Delaney. I don’t mind admitting this stereotype gets me hot to trot but is it reductive and cliched or should I just accept it as escapism? I would love to hear more thoughts on this!

This. 😂 . At the level of everyday interaction, I find most people inherently critical of women who wear makeup for pleasure. Most would say that it’s to get a man or to simply impress somebody, to be “presentable.” Ugh, no. 🤨😒🧐 In my opinion, makeup is simply an externalized extension and expression of the internal being, aka, this is how I feel about who I am and this is how I want to look today. Instead of it being for someone else’s consumption, let’s reframe the whole issue and simply remind ourselves that as women, we are the ones walking around looking snatched 💋(or not🤷🏽‍♀️) and that’s an essential choice that was made before we left home. This point of view I hold ties into what I learned in a second year feminist anthropology class, where we discussed French philosopher Michel Foucault. It was he who suggested that we perform ourselves daily, that we get up and decide who we want to be. I think there’s power in that, especially when we let go of the facade of the ego needing validation and move into the much more satisfying territory of self-expression. What do you think? Do you consciously wield this power? Do you decide who and how you want to feel today before you leave home? Initially I didn't want to post #MLBrealtalk today because... Then something I have been thinking about for a while came back to me. Why does it seem like this ummah is seeking mundane validation? First it was D&G with their Abaya collection, Playboy magazine with cover photos etc now it is Nike with their hijab. From a muslim girl who walk the runway for Kanye West, we keep celebrating the same thing Islam has come to correct. I don't know if I am sounding like a bore, but all these developments are sending some fears into my heart. #DiscussionTime Pt. 9 | "Dark Night of the (Creative) Soul"

Sometimes the inherently joyful experience of being a writer is painted in the harsh hues of sorrow. Self-doubt. Shame. I write on this particular topic this time around because this is where I have been the last several weeks. (Hence my unannounced and unofficial hiatus from the world of writeblr.) Imposter syndrome is all too real, and it sometimes strikes out of the blue. It tells you you’re a talentless hack. You’re vastly inferior to your peers and always will be. A delusional nobody with dreams far beyond your ability. A fraud.

Spoiler alert: None of that is true. But how do we convince ourselves of that? How do we combat that disparaging voice that comes slinking out of the void to slurp down our confidence? In my case, the feelings of inadequacy that accompany imposter syndrome make me shrink away from both my work and the writing community at large, so I’ve decided to simply be more intentional. I’m going to be more proactive about maintaining my presence in and interaction with writing circles because I know that’s how I’ll crawl out of this hole. I’ll remember I belong in the world of writers by reoccupying my place in it. I’ll rediscover the love and affinity I have for words by re-immersing myself in them. Basically, my plan is to take the effects of imposter syndrome and throw it back in its face.

How does imposter syndrome hit you? When was your last writing slump? What do you do to fight back? Do you have any advice for fellow writers who may need it right now?

#DiscussionTime Pt. 8 | "Disbelief, Suspended"

I'm a firm believer in not letting too much reality impede works of fiction. You'll always find that person who watches Star Wars and points out how there could be no explosions in space, or the sound of TIE fighters, or visible lasers, or what-have-you. (Don't be this person, please.) And yeah, we know that that's true, but... that's not what Star Wars is about. Scientific accuracy isn't going to enhance any story past a certain extent, and even other genres have their own version of this scenario. Every element of every character backstory may not be just super plausible. Aspects of travel, and worldbuilding, and action sequences may not be realistic to the nth degree. And that's okay... to a point.

The key is working out exactly where that line is. Through the magic of the suspension of disbelief, you can ask your readers to set aside the restrictions of realism in favor of the escapism of fiction, but there is a limit. Clearly you don't want key plot elements to require readers to set aside everything they know, and asking them to forgo skepticism too often can sink everything that's good about your story. 

How far is too far when it comes to expecting readers to suspend disbelief? What's too much? How often is too often? Are there certain elements of a story that should never require suspension of disbelief? Tell us all what you think!
