Moving blogs!!!

so i made this tumblr because i wanted to take my writing more seriously and treat it like a business so i can make money with it, and because of that i chose to make a pen name. but i think i just want my own name on stuff because people calling me lyra, like i thought it would be fine but im non-binary and it's making me feel icky gender-wise.

also, im going in a different direction than i thought with my writing, so I kind of want to start fresh. my main blog is @tombstuck and i want to be able to be logged in there, so I'm just going to post my writing there on a sideblog! it's @tombstuck-writes.

also i'm sorry to people (specifically @mischiefiswritten and @leisoree who were on my taglist for it) who were invested in my fantasy/mystery wip. the reason im abandoning it is that i don't read mystery so im struggling to write it! maybe if i can become more widely read in that genre i will tackle that project again.

i hope anyone who follows me here will hop over there, because i've been so grateful for the nice feedback i've gotten on this blog.

Happy STS!! Who are two of your characters who would probably benefit from absorbing some of each other's qualities? Why would it help them? - mischiefiswritten

Ooh, you know, this is a fun one because so many of them, even in purely platonic relationships, have that kind of dynamic! The real answer is really that pretty much any of the canon pairs would work, but I'll throw Scarlet and Gwendolyn out for this!

So, these two are already covering each other's weak spots. Gwendolyn is shy and insecure; Scarlet is impulsive and confident. Both of them are outsiders in their home, and while their friendship could seem like a very convenient one, it's never actually been that way. And absorbing some of each other's qualities could only help them make more well-rounded descisions in their own lives.

Gwendolyn could use a bit of impulsiveness, some of Scarlet's rash courage, so she won't hide away and try to plan her entire life. Not that organization is a bad thing, but it doesn't help when she's so busy planning that she doesn't actually do anything. And Scarlet could use some restraint, as well as some of Gwendolyn's willingness to listen to people, because well... let's just say that Gwendolyn is about 9/10ths of Scarlet's self-control as it is, and Scarlet likes maybe four people in the world. The rest are subjected to glares and possible axe swings so... Scarlet would get along much better with a bit of Gwendolyn's traits!

cygnus & harlan in every eingard series book

i was falling back in love with tes today and i had the idea to slap this together. i'm gonna do this with the other ships, it was lovely to revisit the boys i love so dearly :)

fyi only the first 4 books have been fully completed, i've planned and written snippets of the last 3 but haven't actually written anything serious for them since last summer

“I’ll be just a minute,” Cygnus said, attempting to bind his hair with one hand and pull on his cloak with the other. His hands were shaking, and after a minute of struggling he gave up entirely on the ribbon.

Harlan’s eyes followed the movement. “Allow me.” He stepped behind Cygnus, closer than necessary, and took the ribbon from Cygnus’ fingers. Cygnus shivered as their hands brushed. The heat Harlan was radiating right behind his back was torture.

Cygnus gathered his hair in his fingers and held it out, waiting to feel the ribbon wrap around it. But Harlan gently replaced Cygnus’ fingers with his own, leaving Cygnus stunned and breathless. Iron self-control was the only thing that kept him from leaning into Harlan as he swiftly tied the ribbon into a neat bow. Cygnus swore his hand lingered before pulling away. He was probably making this out to be much more intimate than it actually was, but did he imagine the thick air in the room as well?

“Thank you, darling,” Cygnus said, and craned his neck up to kiss him. Harlan smiled and adjusted his black spectacles, as he did constantly while he got used to them. They’d gone from spectacles he only used when stressed and sleep deprived to permanent, as ordered by the healer. Harlan was beyond frustrated about it, but Cygnus had tried consoling him by telling him they were the most attractive thing in the world. Harlan would always retort that they were the world’s greatest annoyance, but Amina knew Cygnus’ comments made him feel a little better.

“Hey,” Cygnus whispered, cutting off his train of thought, which was probably for the better. He placed Harlan’s hand on his chest. “Touch me. Feel me. I’m here, aren’t I? I’m alive. I’m okay.” Cygnus looked worse for wear, tired and weathered, but when he smiled, his eyes shone. Harlan’s heart pulsed so strongly he thought it would burst.

“I love you,” Harlan managed, because he didn’t know what else to say, and he needed to say it. In case this happened again. In case next time he wouldn’t get another chance. “Never leave me again.”

“Never, darling.”

“Harlan sounds like a god among men, the way you talk about him,” he comments over the rim of his coffee mug.

Cygnus smiles and sighs, picturing the hard, stern eyes of Cora and the off putting scent of Heath, the heat of Elio and even the smile of Nym. But that smile had been distant and strange. Otherworldly.

It’s all too easy, then, to picture the way Harlan’s eyes light up when he casts a spell, the way he shakes his head and fights off a smile when Cygnus has done something childish to warrant it. How he walks through the markets and befriends the merchants and their families to make them feel seen and appreciated by the throne, and just because he likes them. His unwavering patience, his unwavering determination to be fair in his job. The taste of his kisses. The security of his arms at night. His dark, mysterious beauty that intrigued Cygnus years ago.

“He’s better,” Cygnus says, not caring if he sounds like a fool.

Harlan insists on helping Cygnus bathe after Easthaven. Cygnus is in too much pain and too willing for a welcome and needed Harlan to take care of him to argue. He gives himself easily into Harlan’s waiting hands. All he has to do is move his limbs enough to undress and lie in the basin. They don’t speak.

Harlan is still furious with himself and with everyone. it shows in his sharp, jerky movements, the symbols of tight control, how tightly he squeezes the cloths to wring them out, as if he’s imagining placing his hands around not-Anson’s throat, his distant, thoughtful eyes, the hard press of his lips together. Nothing Cygnus can say will make him realize it wasn’t his fault, so he just lets Harlan fuss. Cygnus hopes he’ll tire himself out and they’ll fall into bed equally exhausted, one of them pained, tonight.

Evan knows she and Amina are the victims here, but that doesn’t mean the rest of them aren’t suffering in silence, too. In the midst of caring for Amina, in the few waking and sleeping moments when her thoughts aren’t filled with Amina’s too still face, Evan sees the exhaustion on Cygnus’. That’s nothing new, but it’s gotten better over the years. It hasn’t been as it is now since the days before Esther took him into her own hands, onto the training ground. Evan is again amazed by her brother, his ability to provide her so much support while giving it all to Cygnus at the same time. Evan sees them cuddled together under the same cloak by the fire night after night, grieving in silence like her.

At least they have each other at all. This ordeal has taught Evan to be thankful for that.

The Cael stares them down, trapping them between the certain death of the cliff behind them and certain death in a Caelish prisoner camp. Cygnus never takes his hand off Harlan’s chest like that alone will give him the support he needs. It does.

He turns his back on the Cael to say with a grin, “If we’re going down, we might as well go down together.”

Confusion flashes across Harlan’s eyes for the barest second before realization dawns.

Cygnus pushes them both over the edge.

They can’t die apart, but they can die together, on their own terms.

He kisses Harlan as they fall.

Key Takeaways - Neil Gaiman's MasterClass on Storytelling

I'm currently listening to Neil Gaiman's MasterClass on storytelling, and I thought I'd share some of my primary takeaways from the first few episodes.

There are a million bad lines inside of your pencil. Your job as a writer is to get them all out so that you can get to the good ones.

Your influences/inspirations as a storyteller are not just other fiction writers. Stop and think how musicians and other artists influence the stories you want to tell and how to tell them.

When you sit down to begin a new story or project, first take some time to write down everything you know about it so far. Write down all your ideas, sketch and doodle and annotate if you need to, and then look for connections. This is where a story emerges from a jumble of ideas.

What is it about? Every good story is saying something, even if it's not a deep social commentary. This is different from your concept and it will guide you as you go. Stories are about telling the truth through fiction (lies), so think about what truth you're trying to tell.

What do your characters want? This will help you establish conflict. Pick two of your characters, answer this question, and make their desires mutually exclusive. Characters will always get what they need, for good or ill, but not all of them can get what they want.

When you're stuck in your plot, you can also ask yourself what your characters want. They may just save you!

What happens next? This is the most important question, not just because you have to continually answer it to build your plot but because it's the question that makes your story matter. At the end of every chapter or at every shift in character perspective, etc., your readers should be asking this question. It's the only way to keep them turning pages. This question has to matter to you as well, because if the author doesn't care what happens next, neither will anyone else.

These were some of my favorite points or things that I felt were most foundational to young writers. I'm only partway through but I do recommend his MasterClass! It's very informational and uplifting, and he's easy to listen to. Check your local library to see if you can access it for free!

A Couple Of Questions For Fantasy and Mystery Readers:

Would you buy an e-book series if it were a mystery series set in a fantasy setting, each installment were only a novella of about 20,000 words, and each novella costed $0.99? If no, would your answer to this question change if the first novella was free, and you read it and liked it?

And hypothetically if you loved it would you ever buy a physical copy of the series that had a few of the novellas in each book?

The reason I'm asking all of this is that this is how I'm considering setting up my Odd Token series. I think each mystery could be a lot more interesting if it were more focused, and I would get that wonderful feeling of finishing a story about 3 times as often. Introduction

Hey, I’m Imogen and this is my writeblr.

I started this because I thought it was time given that I constantly look to Tumblr for writing inspiration. My favourite genres to read are sci-fi, fantsy and mystery. I mainly write fanfiction currently but do have a fantasy story going on behind the scenes. I will mostly be posting updates on whatever writing project I’m currently on (and will inevitably never finish), short stories, OCs and a lot of reblogs.

O and Q for the character asks, please! For whichever pairing you want to talk about most. -- @mischiefiswritten

So, I’ll do this for Acheflow and Tobias, because they are the pairing I absolutely love to talk about! (Also, because Theodore and Gwen can be very cliche, it’s a little painful sometimes)

O n Cloud Nine - What are they like when they are in love? Is it obvious for others? How do they express their feelings?

So, Tobias is a total dork when he’s in love. He’s a bit of a flirt, but for the girl he falls for? Not nearly as smooth. He’s also ridiculously obvious, from the random gifts (mostly small things, but some big), and declarations of affection to any and all nearby about his beloved. He may or may not wax on and on about them on the rare occasions he manages to get drunk. (AKA, the definition of the one who flirts with his SO while drunk, cries when they say that have a boyfriend, not realizing it’s him)

Acheflow isn’t nearly as obvious, but a big sign is that she actually tolerates -even enjoys- their company. Given her ability, she’s built up big walls and definitely likes her alone time. So her way of expressing her feelings is to actually give that up, have a conversation, and go out of her way to spend extra time just being there with them.

Q uirk - Some random ability they have that’s beneficial in a relationship.

Tobias is really good at reading people, even the ones who don’t ever show their emotions on their face. So, he’s really good at telling when Acheflow absolutely needs her space... and when she definitely should not be alone. (Also, have the uncanny ability to sense when her “secret” chocolate supply is running low)

Acheflow swears she isn’t trying, it isn’t planned, she doesn’t do anything special, but she automatically knows what meals someone needs at any given time. Big happy time? Coincidentally, she made their favorite meal. Getting a cold/sniffles/sick? Guess who had a desire to make a good soup, or someone’s comfort food. It’s random, it’s a little unsettling, but now that she has people she’s close to, it’s something that pops up around them.
