One LGBTQ+ book ends, but another one starts. Malinda Lo’s Ash is officially finished in the NR series, which means I can finally start on… Kacen Callender’s Felix Ever After! I recently finished reading the book (also for my class), and I admit that it made me cry, especially towards the end. I normally don’t reveal much about the books I post here, but I really want to recommend this to others and hope that they connect to it like I did.

Without spoiling anything, Felix Ever After is about a transgender teen, Felix, who struggles with their identity and self-discovery, while struggling to start on a portfolio for a Brown scholarship application. It tackles the ever so complex subject of falling in love. It includes themes such as racism, transphobia, and other triggering issues that some may find troubling. There are mentions of mature content, like sex and use of weed. It’s a pretty new book, too, so there are lots of recognisable references for today’s audiences. All in all, this book stirs your emotions and calls out to your vulnerability, and I hope me posting quotes will possibly ignite your curiosity and grab a copy of this book. 

Asides from this, most of us are prolly aware of the news regarding Texas and the official statement to report transgender youth. The governor of Texas has issued a statement that any parent or guardian will be investigated on the terms of child abuse, with reason that any minor under their care identifies as transgender (which may lead to separating them). Basically, any form of gender affirming care has been issued as child abuse. In regards to this, I feel like Callender’s book perfectly places the importance of trans people in the world. They deserve to exist like us and alongside us. People like Greg Abbot do not need to fight for their place in this world, because they have long known that they are ‘normal.’ But transpeople, like the rest of us, are also ‘normal.’ They are people with feelings who just want to be themselves, to be open about themselves.

For the transpeople out there, I hope you all stay safe. Remember that you are loved and deserve to be loved. You deserve to live in the way that you want. You deserve to exist.
