the way Ncuti has specifically talked about David being HIS doctor and also a huge reason he wanted to be an actor in the first place and NOW he gets a whole story and episode and show with him 😭😭😭😭
what i think REALLY works about dot and bubble is it plays with the genre conventions of doctor who itself. We've seen doctor lite episodes like this, we know how they work. There's person who needs to be saved who gets indirect help from the doctor, maybe they're flawed and learn a lesson at the end, maybe they're part of some flawed society that is just kind of set dressing or ends up being torn down at the end without examination. About halfway through the episode I was ready to brush this off as a fun but predictable classic rtd ep that wasn't really anything special. Then from the the betrayal of ricky September on its like watching a house of cards that has been built the entire episode without us noticing collapse into a perfect stack
“Oh well of course you could see them being racist the whole time” the thing is sometimes doctor who is just like that. RTD EPISODES have historically just been like that, either in that they are microagressions in themselves or have bigoted characters/worlds that go unexamined. And I think this episode performed an absolutely insane self aware slight of hand that relies on both you and the writers knowing that doctor who and sci fi in general has a racism problem. The ending recontextualizes things in the episode you may initially have brushed off as an unfortunate BBC or science fiction moment (all white cast, manifest destiny language) as symptomatic of larger societal issues, thus in turn recontextualizing missed moments of bigotry in the shows own history
certified gay episode of dr who. very queer. david tennant and neil patrick harris gave each other emotionally charged looks for 20 flat minutes. nph put on a silly little german accent and did a silly little drag routine to the spice girls. ncuti gatwa played high stakes catch on a rooftop in a shirt, a tie, his briefs, and a pair of high tops. the master's still kicking.
Oh man someone on reddit just made a really good point that I hadn't considered: Dot and Bubble is a story that could not be told without diverse casting.
In the past, this episode would have been impossible. The predominance of white casting would have required exhaustingly obvious exposition and would have ruined the brick-wallesque impact of the ending.
The only way this story can be told the way it is, is if you have a main cast that's diverse enough for a casting decision like "hey wait everyone here is white" to become obvious.
My gratitude for this story is going to continue growing and unfolding. I am so, so thankful that Doctor Who went so out of its way to give me such a really explicit demonstration of what racism looks like, so that my sheltered white ass knows for the very first time exactly how much I don't see.
I just (finally) listened to Time Lord Immemorial, an audiodrama featuring the 9th Doctor, the Lumiat, the Unbound Doctor and Liv... and oh my god. Oh my fucking god. My thoschei heart. Might have spoilers ahead, or not, idk, you've been warned.
I thought I couldn't love the Lumiat more but this audio showed how one of the many differences between her and her other incarnations (aka the Master) is that she's able to unapologetically express her feelings for the Doctor. Seriously everyone go listen to TLI every single time she spoke to the Doctor I could just hear her heart eyes.
Two quotes absolutely broke me.
"Hello, Thete!" - SPOKEN IN THE WARMEST, SWEETEST VOICE. MY HEART MELTED. All this made me think was that this is a snippet of what their relationship was like in their youth.
Oh and THIS:
"Say the thing, please!"
"Run!"
"With you, my friend, anywhere!"
LIKE!!! Imagine young Koschei loving Theta so much, hearing him ramble on and on and on about all the planets and stars he wants to see, and how they'll go together, and Koschei buys into that idea because yeah, it could be fun, but also because honestly? He'll go anywhere with Theta.
I have no words. I- I don't even know what else to say I just love them so much???
ngl I was expecting the episode itself to end up in some kind of commentary on how the Doctor and Ruby were technically also there to "cosplay" (faking who they were to fit in with the people and just kinda treat their lives like a game), but I guess since they weren't doing Cosplay Murder it's not really on the same order of magnitude and didn't need to be said

Ten minutes and forty-eight seconds.
There were eleven minutes and forty-one seconds between the time the tea shop called to let me know that you were on your way to my house, and the time which you knocked upon my door. In that time, I spent fifty-three seconds putting the kettle on to boil and setting up a tea service.
Can you imagine what I could do to ensure my safety with the remaining ten minutes and forty-eight seconds?
Okay it's two am here (happy pride everyone lol) but I just finished rewatching the new doctor who episode and I'm still blown away by how well done the "his last name is coombs" scene is. Like before that it was a kind of generic episode where there's a bad situation and people are escaping it and the main character seems kind of dickish and incompetent but presumably their arc is to grow and improve over the course of the episode and there might be a moment where this more capable person who's helping them sacrifices themselves to save them and—
And then we get the first big subversion and when I tell you that hit me like a fucking truck and the whole perspective shifts and you realize that this is not the story you thought it was
oh i can't wait to see what sexy bastard rtd has cast for the next version of the master. to pit them on screen against ncuti dr slut gatwa?? oh the bbc's gonna have to up the show's rating, it's gonna be amazing
