“Yes, but the thing is, I can’t possibly marry you, your holiness – I have a husband!”  Charley grabbed the Doctor’s hand.  She tried to blush.  It proved difficult to do on order, so she merely lowered her lashes and attempted to look demure instead.

The Doctor turned his head and she could see him opening his mouth, probably to say something that would ruin it, like, “Is this another little detail you haven’t felt the need to share with me, Charlotte?”

Charley squeezed his hand tighter and mouthed, It’s you.  She hoped that the rider of play along would go without saying.

He narrowed his gaze, and she thought he would argue, but then his face cleared.  He turned back to address the Emperor.  “Oh, quite, your holiness.  I apologise for not mentioning it sooner – Charlotte and I have been married for years.”

“Utterly devoted.”

“Mad about each other,” added the Doctor, in tones she didn’t entirely like.

Charley coughed.  She tugged at his hand and then stretched up to put her arms around his neck – it was much more of a way to go with this Doctor.  Once there, she kissed him squarely on the mouth.  His face twitched.  Somewhat to her surprise, he closed his arms around her, tighter and fiercer than the soft velvet, swirling-around embrace of her Doctor, and kissed her back with both vim and vigour.

“Gosh,” she said, once they were finally done.  She coughed.  “I mean – see, your holiness?”

Afterwards, once they’d made their escape, the Doctor directed a stern look at her.  “That, Charlotte, is what I believe they call taking an outrageous liberty.”

“I really am most awfully sorry.”

And that, she reflected, was what you called a whopping fib.

Also I have to say I LOVE that it’s not just in name or little references that this is Doctor Who’s wonderland, no the entire story is actively built as the sci fi version of it

I love that Charley literally isn’t herself because she is embodying characters in holograms so when someone asks her who she is at the end of the day, she literally answers that she hardly knows because she must have been several people since that morning

And the animals!! The animatronic animals I mean it’s a bit random to still make it akin to wonderland but it WORKS it becomes part of the plot and it’s brilliant

Down to the hologram/time skip thing to Rassilon’s workshop before Gallifrey’s existence ALSO CAN WE JUST TALK ABOUT THAT LORE

WE JUMP BACK TO BEFORE GALLIFREY’S EXISTENCE AND THERE WAS A VAMPIRE SPECIES THAT INHABITED GALLIFREY?! AND THE GALLIFREYANS WIPED THEM OUT?! ALSO THERE’S THIS OTHER HIGH PRIESTESS AND HER RELIGION THAT GALLIFREY ALSO WIPED OUT IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE AND WE LEARN THE SHABOGANS (they’re referenced loosely in dialogue) INHABITED GALLIFREY AND ALSO RASSILON INVENTED REGENERATION WE ARE SENT BACK TO THE INCEPTION OF REGENERATION

now I knew some of this lore, that the timelords engineered regeneration (of course this is rewritten by the Timeless Child plot, but honestly that’s done very easily because Rassilon could easily have learnt how to change their physiology from the scientist who kidnapped the Doctor, yes I’m going with kidnapped bc it gives colonialism vibes, the only reason timeless child still kinda sucks isn’t continuity it’s the Doctor Is a Special Snowflake theme we’re left with) and something about the shabogans (supposedly the race the Doctor could have come from?? Mentioned a lot in classic who but I don’t think there’s a specific basis for this it’s just fan theories bc they were mentioned during Jodie’s run?) but NOT the vampires and LET ME TELL YOU

This gives me ideas about a Whouffaldi gallifreyan Dracula AU ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THE HEAD VAMPIRE GUY DOES HAVE THE VIBE OF DRACULA

Dracula could be this guy, fled to earth, with an eternal grudge and bam Whouffaldi/Jonmina CROSSOVER idk why crossover fics keep occurring to me like I’ve even written the last one (I absolutely intend to I swear-)

Idk one of these ideas works maybe both just thoughts I am thoughting

Listen I don’t dislike Charley not at all. But I don’t quite…. Get the draw with her and 8? Yes devoted besties but why don’t I feel the…. Emotional investment with them, like with Clara and 12? I’m absolutely loving the plot but I can’t help but think rewrite this and put Clara and 12 in this situation and GOD it’s like 100000000% more painful and intriguing and interesting and compelling and complex like what’s missing someone help me here, what are Charley and Eight lacking in because this situation is even better with Donna and 14 we’ve SEEN that in Wild Blue Yonder, similar situation just not quite as dire but still!!

I feel like a key ingredient to Charley and Eight’s relationship was missing before we got to vows at the door of life and death, and the pain of betrayal, like they’re not flour but they’re pumpkin spice rn and they need to be at masala chai ya get me 🤌🏻☕️

The Master losing his mind with jealousy over anyone else getting to possess the Doctor. Those insides belong to HIM

(The fact that he’s never even managed to do it all the way either. Tragic)

The War Master once successfully wormed his way into the Eighth Doctor’s body! The Delgado Master and the Third Doctor also had a brief body swap.

But of course, these events weren't permanent. It was just enough to give the Master a taste of what it's like to he inside the Doctor, to own those insides. Just enough for him to fully believe that that is his territory.

So how dare anyone else encroach on that? How dare someone else take what is his? How dare others take possession of the Doctor’s body?

As soon as he finds out about each instance, it doesn't matter who was in the Doctor’s body - be it someone like Charley or Peri or a being more terrifying like the Mara, the Fendahl, or Zagreus.

He's going to kill them.
