As a dev, can confirm.
I've used multiple dev- or sysadmin-oriented software without understanding what they were for, but they were needed by some other parts of the system.

12. a trope you’re really into right now
haha well im gonna interpret "right now" as something i got into recently... dragon romance (YOU KNOW). also doomed friendship/friends-to-enemies arcs. does "the banality of evil" count as a trope?
17. talk about your writing and editing process
**OUGH**
okay so uhhhh for fic specifically its like. if its a new fic or a oneshot i write down a really rough summary like, i just ramble in my word doc as if i was telling someone this outline. sometimes if i already rambled about fic ideas in someone's dm's ill just copy paste it and use that as an outline. this was basically how me and mal wrote the outline for wedding fic, and also i did this with me and liz's dms when i first drafted solo au. and then i just start writing and keep fleshing out the outline till its done.
if its a chapter in a longer or ongoing work, like db:
prewriting; i need to know what main events happen in this chapter and also what key information is dropped. in chapter 11, something big happens, the steward shows up! thats something thats gonna build up to something in future chapters, so it was necessary to introduce it now. another big thing happens, when min encounters a denizen whose suffering he was complicit in. those are the big things that Have to happen, but then also in between that i want to drop some pieces of information that will become relevant in later chapters. when i get an idea for something gay i will find a way to work it in-- like, i didn't Need to make min kabedon ryan in ch11, but i had a vision. i had a dream. i did that for ME
writing; okay so first i lay down . then at 9-11pm i write in stimuwrite and then copy it into a word document later. then i lay down some more. if im REALLY feelin wild and i get into a groove i just keep writing till i pass out at 2 or 3 am. sometimes i go to my favorite cafe if i need to Lock In. writing is just mostly cleaning up and expanding on my outline. when i know generally what the trajectory of the chapter is and what stuff i need to make happen, everything else i kind of make up on the spot, like, the car settings and denizens are based off of whatever ideas or images were interesting to me recently. if i see an opportunity for fun banter or interactions i'll just throw it in. if i think of something funny or gay i'll put it in too. idgaf
editing; most fun part. so first i lay down. then i get up and look at a random scene of the wip. i edit it a bit. then i lay down. then i review the whole thing and fix any obvious #cringe moments or typos or fucked up syntax. then i lay down. then i edit some more until i can bear to show someone else
peer review. i show my trusted friends the fruits of my labors. they tell me if the vibes are off. they leave comments on my docs and reactions that help me gauge if my intentions/tone came through the writing. also frankly showing my friends a wip is nice bc the writing process can be very lonely and its a good motivator to show people and get amped up to finish
illustration; i've probably been sketching ideas up till this point, but i usually pick scenes if they're either important enough to the plot that i want to give an extra "oomph" to the moment, or if i just really have a strong image in my brain during a scene.
publish it. lay down again. sleep for a week. start thinking abt the next chapters

1/100 days of getting my life back together
Wednesday, July 3, 2024
So I decided to try to do a thing for the first time ever since forever - try to start having a blog(?) again, because, well, the brain rot is real. I've deleted twitter for now to give my brain some rest, because a lot of things were stressing me out.
My life has been a real mess the last few months and I really need to get my shit back together. This semester was the biggest flop so far (which is not to say that much - it's only a second one, but still) and I'm really upset about it.
I've come off one of my meds, that were making me insanely sleepy whenever I tried to focus (still have no idea whether that was a real thing or no, but they either way were not doing anything for me), got back on antidepressants, that are a-okay to me, at least side effects wise, and I was hoping that NOW I will be so much better at school. It got so much worse.
Tumblr media
Not my room, but the vibes sum everything up quite perfectly. Everything feels insanely hard to do. I feel like a failure. I'm stressed and lost, but we persevere to the best of our abilities.
Anyway, I am writing this post one day after the 3rd of July, because I figured I should start somewhere, and despite wanting to have the first entry be as perfect as I want to become later, I figured that I have already tried that approach earlier, and it always falls off. Maybe it's better to start bad, slowly trying to build up all the habits and changes.
After all it is 100 days of trying to get my life together, not 100 days of describing my life being together.
Anyway, on 3rd of July I wanted to do some document related work and do some job applications, but because of fucking up my sleep schedule days prior to finish an assignment (which I got 100% for, insanely), I could not resist falling asleep in the day and then waking up late in the evening. That then scaled to 4th of July night, when I could not fall asleep again until 4 am, and the cycle repeated again.
So, yeah. T'was a flop. I didn't do anything good or productive for studying. The only thing I managed to accomplish was tidying up the place a little, but not the dishes. Luckily, my boyfriend helped me with that. It feels so much better to be able to work as a team on tasks that feel this big and unbearable.
2/100 days of getting my life back together
Thursday, July 4, 2024
It is currently 13:44 as I am writing this. Woke up (or more so, thankfully, got woken up by my boyfriend) by about 12:30. Still feel very poopy, but in today's plans are to do some studying for the first out of my two exams, and maybe a little bit for the second one.
DB 2
DB 3
SE2
dishes
DB 4
Probably will keep editing this post for any relevant updates that are not shitposts.
15:08 - 16:02 finished the db2 and 3 bits, 3rd one was way shorter than I expected. it turned out that I already had a set of flashcards on quizzlet there on it, so that was a win. originally was planning to study for one hour, but then finished 6 mins earlier, because my brain was fried and finished the dishes on my break. now back to studying
16:17 - 18:01 finished working on the SE2, but the lecture was kinda short and won't be that important at the exam, so I can't say I studied it properly. i will put more thought into it later (maybe), but not for now, since my ass is BURNING from the heat of upcoming deadline for the exams and there are more complex things i need to learn. started working on DB 4, which was an addition on initially planned to-do list. a little more than 1.5 hours of trying to understand the lecture made my brain feel GONE. i started to feel very irritated at the end, so im gonna be taking a break.
18:36 - 19:52 some minecraft break for mindlessly and quietly doing some things around our base. cleaned up the ground for where i want to build our house, transferred some stuff and organized it in a new chests system. the project will take A LOT of time so yuh. did i spend too much time on it? yes. will i do it again? also yes, probably. then we ate some dinner and now im comming back to some studying and note taking.
21:09 - 22:22
did some more note taking on DB4, not finished with it yet, but I think I'll call it a day for today. I'll probably play some more Minecraft before sleep and reread my notes and flashcards too. overall I feel still kind of unsatisfied with the day and its' results, I think mostly because of this is 1.5 hour game break, but it is what it is for now. overall I guess I did do some stuff done today, so it's still a win, right?

Understanding NoSQL Database Management
Tumblr media
NoSQL databases have grown in popularity over the past decade, especially in modern, data-driven applications. Whether you're building real-time analytics, large-scale web apps, or distributed systems, NoSQL databases offer flexibility and performance that traditional relational databases might struggle with. In this post, we’ll break down what NoSQL is, its types, advantages, and when to use it.
What is NoSQL?
NoSQL stands for "Not Only SQL". It refers to a class of database systems that are not based on the traditional relational model. Unlike SQL databases, NoSQL databases are schema-less and can handle unstructured, semi-structured, or structured data efficiently.
Why Use NoSQL?
Scalability: Designed for horizontal scaling and distributed systems.
Flexibility: Schema-free design allows storing various data formats.
Performance: Optimized for specific use-cases like document storage or real-time querying.
Big Data Friendly: Great for handling massive volumes of data.
Types of NoSQL Databases
Document-Based: Stores data as JSON-like documents. Example: MongoDB, CouchDB
Key-Value Store: Data is stored as key-value pairs. Example: Redis, DynamoDB
Column-Based: Stores data in columns instead of rows. Example: Apache Cassandra, HBase
Graph-Based: Designed for data with complex relationships. Example: Neo4j, ArangoDB
Example: MongoDB Document
{ "_id": "001", "name": "Alice", "email": "[email protected]", "orders": [ { "item": "Book", "price": 12.99 }, { "item": "Pen", "price": 1.50 } ] }
Common NoSQL Use Cases
Content Management Systems (CMS)
Real-time analytics and logging
IoT data storage
Social media applications
Product catalogs and inventory

Streamlining Procurement in a Distributed Business: The Power of DB Sourcing
Tumblr media
Introduction
Procurement in today’s distributed business environment isn’t just about placing orders—it’s about aligning operations, people, and processes under a unified system. From creative teams to supply chain managers, stakeholders rely on a seamless flow of products and services to keep campaigns and projects moving forward. Yet, the reality for many organizations is far from efficient. Fragmented communication, manual quoting, and disconnected systems continue to stall productivity.
This is where procurement management solutions become essential. They offer a centralized approach to managing sourcing activities, reducing administrative overhead, and improving vendor collaboration. One standout platform in this space is DB Sourcing—a robust, scalable system built to empower marketers, distributors, and enterprise teams alike.
Why Procurement is Often a Pain Point
Procurement is one of the most time-consuming operational processes. Staff often waste hours sending quote requests, comparing prices, managing revisions, and tracking deliveries. Without a standardized platform, these tasks happen across spreadsheets, emails, and disconnected portals, creating opportunities for miscommunication, budget overruns, and compliance risks.
These inefficiencies not only slow down operations but also limit a company’s ability to be agile. In an environment where timelines are tight and budgets are scrutinized, every missed opportunity to streamline procurement can impact bottom-line results.
Procurement Management Solutions: The Modern Business Imperative
Today’s organizations require more than simple purchasing tools. They need procurement management solutions that centralize vendor communication, automate workflows, and provide visibility into every stage of the sourcing process.
Features such as pre-approved vendor catalogs, role-based approvals, audit trails, and real-time status updates transform procurement from a bottleneck into a strategic advantage. These platforms empower teams to make faster, smarter decisions—without sacrificing oversight or quality.
What Makes DB Sourcing Unique
Unlike generic procurement tools, DB Sourcing is designed specifically for the print, marketing, and promotional product industries. It supports multi-vendor quoting, creative collaboration, and job tracking within a system that integrates with your broader business ecosystem.
Here’s what sets DB Sourcing apart:
Streamlined Quoting Process: Easily request and compare quotes from multiple vendors, all within one interface.
Vendor Transparency: Monitor performance history, track delivery timelines, and enforce compliance with preferred supplier agreements.
Custom Workflows: Set up approval hierarchies and review protocols that align with your organizational structure.
Cross-Team Visibility: Ensure procurement, marketing, and operations are aligned with shared access to sourcing data and updates.
Real-Time Communication: Eliminate email chains by centralizing all procurement-related discussions and documentation.
How DB Sourcing Improves Organizational Efficiency
Implementing a centralized procurement system allows teams to:
Avoid project delays caused by late or unclear vendor responses
Reduce human error and eliminate redundant data entry
Scale operations across multiple departments or franchise locations
Provide leadership with spend visibility and vendor accountability
Optimize vendor performance through measurable KPIs
This level of control and agility ensures that your sourcing process no longer slows down production—but powers it.
Conclusion
With growing pressure to deliver faster and leaner, organizations must rethink how they approach procurement. Modern teams need tools that replace outdated, manual processes with real-time collaboration, automation, and visibility. Procurement management solutions like DB Sourcing don’t just streamline sourcing—they drive operational excellence.
If your organization is looking to enhance control, collaboration, and consistency in procurement, now is the time to explore DB Sourcing and build a foundation for smarter sourcing.

There is no deficit of PHP frameworks nowadays for a web development company to choose from. They come in all shapes and sizes for developers with different hosting capabilities, skills, application needs, and development time-frames. The common goal of all PHP frameworks is to make the development process faster and easier. PHP frameworks help to simplify complex coding problems by providing developers with a platform for developing powerful web applications in a short time. The PHP structure allows for rapid application development (RAD), which saves a lot of time and reduces the need to run coding from scratch, ensuring stable application development. Without the help of a PHP infrastructure, developing mobile and web applications can challenging for beginners when it comes to writing code and creating a connection between a database and an application that is being developed from scratch. The use of the PHP Framework reduces the workload. The best thing about PHP frameworks is the ease of adaptation, as well as the ability to learn them faster compared to other programming languages. Although, every developer that has ever worked with a framework before, knows that each of them is unique and should be chosen depending on the anticipated result. Below we will review the best frameworks out there in 2019 to provide everything you need to know to choose the best one for you. Choosing a PHP Framework Before making a choice in favor of one particular framework, you should consider its following characteristics: Functionalities and components; Development frequency; Learning curve; Community size. You want to choose a framework that is easy to learn and provides fast development with good looking frontends. Let’s see which ones out of our Top 5 list suit these requirements the best, defining strengths and weaknesses of each of them. Laravel If you start searching for a PHP framework, this one will most likely come up first. Laravel owes its wide popularity to its easiness of use and wide range of inbuilt features. Strengths Developer-friendliness (easy to learn); Innovative technology (relatively new tool); High speed of development; High security (strong encryption packages); Convenient files and code organization; Great documentation; MVC architecture (and PHP7); Unit testing (FAST on HHVM); Advanced out of the box functionality; Routing (the easiest to manage); ORM support; Large community. Weaknesses Higher bugs possibility; Not easy to transfer legacy systems; Does lots of queries on the DB; Does not work on shared hosting plans. Symfony This tool will provide you with a rich variety of features. Symfony has earned a reputation of a reliable and mature PHP framework through the years. Strengths High performance; Flexibility; Reliability; Great documentation, maintenance, and support; Large community. Weaknesses Not an easy learning process; Reduced speed of development; No MVC support. Phalcon This tool is different in its coding style. Phalcon coding is based on C and C++, not holding it from providing an advanced set of development features you can use. Strengths Easy to learn; Very high speed of development; Autoloading; Advanced security features; Traditional MVC code; Great documentation. Weaknesses Not as open source as Laravel; Does not work on shared hosting plans; Does not work with HHVM. Yii 2 It is one of the oldest PHP frameworks that provide support and efficiently to answer modern development needs. You can call Yii 2 a more developer-friendly competitor of Symfony 2 with its easy learning curve. Strengths Easy to learn; Flexibility; High security; High speed of development; Variety of configuration; MVC and object-oriented; Availability to build small CRUD applications immediately. Weaknesses The lack of built-in allowances; No AR queries; Too many libraries & dependencies; Doesn’t allow multiple relations built up.
CodeIgniter If you need a powerful tool with advanced features, this one might be for you. CodeIgniter is appreciated among developers for allowing them to focus on creativity. Strengths Developer friendliness; Standard databases use (such as MySQL); Easy to extend and customize; Supports Web Page and Database Caching; Good documentation and support; Requires little coding; Built-in security feature Weaknesses Does no support code modular separation by default; Lacks exhaustive libraries that are built inside the framework. Summary There are many programming languages you can use, but PHP is still the best option for server-side scripting. However, even if you are a PHP professional, coding all parts of each new project will take a long time. However, if you choose the best PHP framework for your needs, you can skip a lot of the basics and go straight to the interesting part of developing a new project. Although we have shortlisted top 5 PHP frameworks of 2019, you will have your own opinion on each of them, depending on the goals you have set for your project. Above are the main factors that might influence your choice. Consider them and decide which one is a match with your requirements.

slurm is easy once you get the hang of it, but training seminars etc are always damn near useless because they're written by folks with the worst communication skills ever and for some reason they're always directed at people who are borderline fucking technologically illiterate. I think that computing centers (rightfully) assume that once you can figure out how to run sbatch, sinfo, and scancel then you'll just go directly to the documentation for slurm to figure the rest out.
The first like two days of the training where entirely based on the user experience and the dude was like "so how are you guys submitting your jobs?"
"I never have and probably never will submit jobs"
"Oh so you guys are administrators"
"Yeah.."
But yeah, there was some shit he brought up that he said straight up was not in any of their documentation and I wanted to strangle him. Like write it down dude!!
The actual installation through rpmbuild with the specific modules isn't really that difficult, like getting a version with RestAPI enabled for a workflow management software some of the researchers need. My last lab we used MOAB w/ torque and pbs and I basically never needed to reconfigure that scheduler at all for the researchers other than building the sql db for it.
Honestly incredibly surprised someone that follows me is familiar with slurm, I have such a small amount of people I can talk about HPC with lol

Comprehensive Tutorial on Mongo DB in MERN Stack Development
The MERN stack has emerged as a popular choice for developers seeking a streamlined, full-stack JavaScript solution for web application development. Among its four core technologies—Mongo DB, Express.js, React.js, and Node.js—Mongo DB plays a crucial role as the database layer. This article provides a comprehensive tutorial on Mongo DB in MERN Stack Development, focusing on its integration, functionality, and best practices.
What is Mongo DB?
Mongo DB is a NoSQL database known for its document-oriented structure and JSON-like data storage format. Unlike traditional relational databases, Mongo DB uses collections and documents instead of tables and rows. This schema-less nature provides the flexibility needed for modern, dynamic web applications.
Setting Up Mongo DB in MERN Stack
Install Mongo DB: Start by downloading and installing Mongo DB on your local machine or setting up a cloud-based Mongo DB instance using MongoDB Atlas.
Integrate Mongo DB with Node.js: Use tools and libraries to connect your Node.js application to the database. This step ensures seamless data flow between the application and the database.
Define Data Models: Create schemas to structure your data, ensuring consistency and ease of management throughout the development process.
Working with Mongo DB in MERN Applications
CRUD Operations: Mongo DB simplifies Create, Read, Update, and Delete operations, which are essential for managing data in applications.
Data Population: Mongo DB supports referencing and embedding documents, enabling efficient data retrieval and relationship management.
Best Practices for Mongo DB in MERN Stack Development
Indexing: Improve query performance by creating indexes on frequently queried fields. Indexing helps optimize database searches and reduces response time.
Schema Design: Design schemas based on your application’s access patterns to ensure optimal performance and scalability. Proper schema design minimizes redundancy and enhances maintainability.
Environment Configuration: Use environment variables to manage database credentials securely. This approach protects sensitive information and supports better deployment practices.
Conclusion
Mongo DB’s flexibility and powerful features make it an essential component of the MERN stack. By following this comprehensive tutorial on Mongo DB in MERN Stack Development, you can leverage its full potential to create scalable and efficient web applications. From setting up the database to implementing best practices, Mongo DB empowers developers to build robust back-end solutions

What Is a DBS Check? A Guide for Employers and Individuals
A DBS check is crucial for employers and individuals to ensure safety, trust, and compliance in various professional and personal settings. Whether hiring for a sensitive role or volunteering with vulnerable groups, understanding what a DBS check entails can simplify the process and highlight its importance.
What Is a DBS Check?
A DBS is a background check conducted through the UK's Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). It reviews an individual's criminal record to determine their suitability for specific roles, particularly those involving vulnerable individuals or positions of trust.
The DBS replaced the former Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) 2012, streamlining the process under a single body.
Why Are DBS Checks Important?
DBS checks are vital for:
Employment Screening: Employers use DBS checks to ensure candidates are suitable for roles that require high levels of trust, such as in healthcare, education, or childcare.
Safeguarding Vulnerable Individuals: Volunteers and workers in roles involving children, older people, or people with disabilities often need DBS checks to comply with safeguarding regulations.
Compliance with Legal Obligations: DBS checks are a legal requirement for specific sectors, such as care homes or schools.
Building Trust: Conducting DBS checks demonstrates a commitment to safety and ethical practices.
Types of DBS Checks
There are three main types of DBS checks, depending on the level of detail required:
Basic DBS Check
Provides information about unspent convictions.
Typically used for non-sensitive roles, such as administrative positions.
Standard DBS Check
Includes details of both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and warnings.
Commonly used for roles in finance, legal sectors, or positions of trust.
Enhanced DBS Check
It contains all information from the standard check and any relevant information held by local police.
Often required for roles involving direct contact with children or vulnerable adults.
Enhanced DBS Check with Barred List
It consists of a check against the DBS barred lists, identifying individuals banned from working with vulnerable groups.
How to Apply for a DBS Check
Identify the Type of Check Needed: Determine the appropriate DBS check based on the role and the level of contact with vulnerable groups.
Employer Responsibility: The employer must initiate the process through a registered body or umbrella company for standard or enhanced checks.
Individual Applications: Individuals can apply for an essential DBS check through the DBS online portal.
Provide Necessary Documents: Submit proof of identity, such as a passport or driver's license, along with relevant forms.
Processing and Results: The processing time varies, but most results are delivered within a few weeks.
Tips for Employers and Individuals
Understand Legal Requirements: For regulated roles, ensure the appropriate level of DBS check is conducted.
Follow GDPR Compliance: Handle DBS results securely and responsibly.
Work with Registered Bodies: Employers can streamline the process by collaborating with registered umbrella companies.
Benefits of DBS Checks
Improved Safety: Ensures individuals in sensitive roles do not pose a risk.
Compliance: Helps organizations meet legal and regulatory requirements.
Trust and Credibility: Strengthens the reputation of employers and institutions.
Conclusion
A DBS check is indispensable for maintaining safety and trust in various professional and volunteer settings. Employers and individuals can confidently navigate the requirements and ensure a safe, compliant working environment by understanding the types, processes, and benefits. Whether hiring for a role or volunteering, a DBS check is a step toward accountability and security.

Review - Huda F are You? by Huda Fahmy
Tumblr media
Huda F are You? is a graphic novel by Huda Fahmy that hilariously documents a young Muslim girl’s mission to discover her identity now that she’s in a new school where being “the hijabi girl” is no longer unique. It’s recommended for grades eight through eleven (NoveList, n.d.). I chose this book for the graphic novel prompt because it was on the TLA 2023 TAYSHAS reading list (Texas Library Association, 2023) and because I can’t remember having ever read a book with a Muslim lead. I’m always trying to diversify my reading and decided to rectify that gap in my reading. Huda F are You? was a delightful book for learning about Muslim American culture. It shows us Huda’s struggles in ways that are universally relatable but still highlight unique experiences hijabis face growing up in America. The relatable story and characters are highlighted through cute, expressive cartoon illustrations and the humor is delivered through expertly crafted page layout and plot pacing.
The central plot in the book is Huda figuring out her identity amidst the chaos of starting at a new high school where her role becomes unclear. In her previous community, she was the only hijabi in her community, and though she has a larger community in her new high school, there are also several people who make their disdain for Muslims known in big and small ways. The relatable teen moments (like telling a boy you like them only to realize you mostly just want their approval) and the moments of Islamophobia (such as a teacher repeatedly describing Muslims as inherently violent) are seamlessly intertwined. I don’t want to make it seem that diverse fiction’s value should be based on whether white people can relate to it or not, but as a white woman I really appreciated that this book acts as a wonderful window into Muslim American girls’ experiences.
The characters are my favorite part of this book. Huda, our lead, is hilariously self-deprecating but isn’t a clown. She is a fully realized character who demonstrates intelligence, kindness, and grows a lot throughout the story. A particularly strong moment is when Huda realizes that she doesn’t wear her hijab and go to halaqa because she must, but because she likes those parts of her Muslim culture. It’s an empowering moment that reveals Huda’s values and her growth into a more self-assured individual. The other characters in the book are just as well rounded, with Huda’s mother having a heartbreaking backstory told in an impressive three pages. With identity and belonging being central themes of the book, it’s important to have realistic characters for the audience to love and root for, and Fahmy’s character development is wildly successful.
Fahmy is a master at storytelling through comics. Her cartoony style allows for funny, heightened expressions that do a lot to communicate characters’ thoughts and deliver punchlines. The page layouts also carry much of the humor by guiding the book’s pacing. The book is a very quick read, in part because the illustrations are cartoony with minimal detail and frequently take up full two-page spreads. This layout establishes a quick, energetic pace that supports the book’s humor by delivering punchlines with perfect timing.
Huda F are You? is a delightful read. The humor and characters offer a witty, accessible look into Muslim American experiences. It’s also a perfect book for reluctant or struggling readers because of the casual language and heavy reliance on visual art to tell the story. It’s a short, highly enjoyable book that is sure to engage any reader.
