with delicate unwrapping, the gift was revealed---a framed photograph, though not of them, as proton had so lovingly bestowed upon him. it was, in fact, a listing for a huge plot of land just outside of rustboro, nestled in the forest neighboring the great city, with a deed of ownership tucked into the corner of the frame, perfectly in sight but not sticking so far out to block the photograph.

' i feel you have been stuck at home long enough. i think with the new year, hoenn deserves a proper shelter for its dog pokemon, run by perhaps the most qualified person i know. '

A dog shelter?

Even Proton could see that an idiot like him was far from qualified to do this, even with the strongest love for canines and the best of intentions at heart. He didn’t have the financial responsiblity, nor did he have the smarts to properly spell ‘financial responsibility’ if he wanted to. He didn’t have the knowledge nor the experience to work with animals, couldn’t cover the costly funds for the vet work, and lacked the patience to find and work with the staff needed to run such an operation for a single day, let alone keep them without driving them away.

It was a project surely doomed to fail with a no-good criminal at the head of it.

“I... This is a huge leap from a bit of childhood dog walking and looking after my own pets, Atticus.”

And yet, he loved the thought of it all as his fingertips grasped that frame between both hands like it was a lifeline -- trembling under the weight of the sudden responsibility as he desperately wished he were better, so that he could see a project like this flourish into what it deserved to be.

“This could be something so good. What if I fuck it up an’ waste all your money?”

The thought terrifies, but perhaps he doesn’t quite realize that not wanting to fuck it up is the first step in starting to try his best.
