putting my prediction on record now that the coming decade is going to see the rise of viral-marketed fancy at-home water filtration systems, driving and driven by a drastic reduction in the quality of U.S. tap water (given that we are in a 'replacement era' where our current infrastructure is reaching the end of its lifespan--but isn't being replaced). also guessing that by the 2030s access to drinkable tap water will be a mainstream class issue, with low-income & unstably housed people increasingly forced to rely on expensive bottled water when they can't afford the up-front cost of at-home filtration--and with this being portrayed in media as a "moral failing" and short-sighted "choice," rather than a basic failure of our political & economic systems. really hope i'm just being alarmist, but plenty of this already happens in other countries, and the U.S. is in a state of decline, so. here's praying this post ages into irrelevance. timestamped April 2023

Man I wonder where the leader of the fear realm could've gone, it's alMOST LIKE NEVIN HAS AN
#had to re-edit the image real quick because the original edit was from a post I made about Drew years ago#and while the Drew thing is becoming less and less likely. #e#i'm sorry for this but i never make posts with essays in the tags so bear with me for once#every time i find a new Thing it eats me alive until i can forget about it#after i finished earthbound i cried for 2 days straight. u think i am exaggerating but i am not... it was scary. i could not stop bawling#when i read the locked tomb series i was literally emotionally destroyed for a whole ass month#while i had the books out from the library i just kept reading them. and rereading them. and rereading them#and i read really fast so i probably read each book like 5 times at least. and the emotional parts i read over dozens of times#anyway this time my Thing is lore olympus. i read all of lore olympus in two days and now i don't know what to do with myself#(ok to be fair i was caught up in like 2021 but it's been a while so i had to start from the beginning again)#side note: i can't wait for alecto to come out so i can be completely destroyed for the rest of my life

Every now and then I remember the times I would mention to my flatmate that I was thinking of buying myself something reasonably expensive (that I had been eyeing up for months and had budgeted for) and she'd tell me that I shouldn't spend that much money on something I didn't need and it would be stupid etc etc while she regularly impulse bought things that cost at least as much and she would use once (while complaining that she was under a lot of financial stress and couldn't afford <$3/week for 2 months for a rental washing machine when ours broke). She is... perhaps not my first call for financial advice
#like I get that you're financially stressed but also it feels a bit rich to complain about it when you're on student allowance (not loan)#and your parents still contribute to things for you even though allowance is supposed to be for people whose parents can't afford to help#and you get multiple scholarships a year even though you're technically not eligible for half of them anymore but then as soon as the money#comes in from those you spend it all on a brand new dress for your sister's hen's do picnic because you can't wear the same dress as you#will for the actual hen's night or the wedding. Better buy a full price one at an expensive store instead of looking in a single op shop or#borrowing one from one of your three sisters who are all roughly the same size#god life must be so tough for you getting the same amount of money as the rest of us on student loan except you only have to pay back half#like the only money you have to live off is the same as what the rest of us get + scholarships (plural) plus what you earnt in your summer#internship? how could you possibly survive??#anyway I am NOT a fan of people who are like 'oh you say you have no money for rent but you have a phone?' because that's bullshit#and the whole 'millenials need to stop eating avocado toast so they can buy a house' thing is also bullshit#however. If you pay $60/week for a gym when you have access to the free uni one (or any other gym in the country is like $20)#and you buy uber eats multiple times a week for like $30+ each time despite having a premade meal in the fridge. and you get multiple#scholarships which mean you are arguably among the more well off students. AND you impulse buy things that cost over $100 regularly#then maybe the problem is not that you don't have enough money to split the rental costs of a washing machine (<$3 each/week)#maybe you are just bad with money#which is fine like it's not like it's unfixable it's just annoying when you act like you're worse off than people whose only money is what#they get from student loan each week so they eat beans on rice for dinner for a week#because that's all they could afford (yes I know people who did this. Yes she complained more than them)#so no I don't think I'm gonna be taking financial advice from you babes because one of us has entertained the idea of a budget to help with#finances and it's not you xx#(she turned down offers of financial help/advice/books to borrow from multiple people multiple times. I 100% get that you might not want to#talk to people about it especially your friends but we had multiple books on finances lying around the flat which she always said she didn't#need. And then she'd continue to complain that she didn't have enough money#god forbid you suggest something like going to a cheaper gym (or worse. The perfectly fine free uni gym!)#again. Her gym cost $60/week for most of last year until they brought in a student discount which was 'only' $45/week#the next most expensive gym chain I can find costs maybe $30/week for the highest membership level#to get what she was getting she would only need like a $20 membership#BUT to be fair she wouldn't get such strong culty vibes at any other gym#lol anyway sorry for the rant. Okay I'm going to say it.
The MOST unrealistic thing about Supernatural are the motels in the show. The driving.
Can't just show up anywhere in America with 30$ and a prayer anymore.
#I'm so not kidding I grew up travelling and so I remember travelling pre phones pre GPS#Got a small taste between HS and College before Airbnb hit#Now it's a very depressing nightmare#Most hotels cannot book directly in person or have much higher rates than online from 3rd party sites#Some hotels won't even have a receptionist available unless you booked ahead#Most you have to let them know what 'window' you'll be arriving#and absolutely none of them are under 50$ even in the middle of nowhere -#but ALSO in the middle of nowhere some states car sleeping is illegal even if you need just 6hrs to be safely rested to drive again#Tumblr talks about how USA people don't travel#or they do but inside the country because our nation is That Big#but honestly travel isn't affordable or looked at favorably unless#you can afford to do it the 'acceptable' way#I think I should have been born even 5 years earlier#I'm still very much a liberal but as I've gotten older I've gotten sick of infrastructure housing rates phones hustle culture nightly renta#surveillance states etc etc#no wonder I miss Montana but even West and Bozeman are becoming worse... sigh

After long observation, this is all I can think with how much Disney fumbled Magnifico and what we really ended up getting
#wish 2023#king magnifico#dhaos#tales of phantasia#tales of#wish spoilers#PLEASE don't take this LITERALLY btw phantasia/dhaos-fans - it's the “tragic villain”-angle magnifico ended with ACCIDENTALLY#because Disney has lost their way of committing to a sincerely evil villain for real since eons ago apparently#had to make him do some weird 180 on his personality after consulting an evil book + a very tonally confusing villain song...#like#this benevolent and frankly wise king had to painstakingly rule a kingdom for eons while knowing how greedy and unknowing people can get -#regarding what they wish for VS what they truly might need - or some possibly having bad wishes/desires (which Wish hardly acknowledges)#And all of this is due him lost his family when young which motivated him to learn sorcery to build a kingdom so none could go through same#sorry but that's massive dhaos-vibes to me man#yet he's eventually driven to villainous breakdown due getting sick of people always wanting more from him#and clearly being traumatised by what happened to him in past and anxious for the kingdom he built so long to protect people from that#but Wish just has to paint his as “bad” and hold Asha's more lacking ethics on wish-granting as “right”? Is that a right message to send?#eventually he's ovethrown to gay-baby-jail mirror for rest of eternity by these very people and his wife (patented disney girlboss moment)#and possibly watch his long-preserved kingdom be destroyed by a wide-eyed wish-granter without any understanding of grey morality...#yeaaahhhh#I think Magnifico would eventually come to be a full-blown misandry and say that wickedness truly lurks in the hearts of men :7c#all I'm saying is#magnifico just feels like more like tragic villain in flavour of dhaos the more I think about the “treatment” he went through in the movie.#IDK should disney have committed on that because we already had enough poor twist villains or sympathetic ones as#but the way magnifico was marketed/hyped up as VS what we got just made me think Disney hasn't still got it and ended writing a tragic one

I've been reading about xiangqi a bit and now I'm even more obsessed with that one video of Jing Yuan
#Obsessed with the fact they made a point of him not leaving the palace#Anyway I was rewatching this because I still find very amusing that you can see when he steals that piece from the board#Which is something that makes I think more sense considering the ways in which you can check and win in this game#It seems pretty fun actually I think I'll try. Maybe with this being different this time I'll be able to convince someone to play with me#No one wants to indulge me when it comes to chess and I don't like playing online#Hmm actually this game seems less unpleasant to play non physically based on aesthetics#With chess I always have to take out a physical board and it's sort of annoying. The pocket chess I carry around is not much better#Yes I think I'll give xiangqi a try. And look for good books about it and its evolution. I hope I find something#It's always so hard to find things worth reading about topics like these. Like with fencing. Still unsure about what I got about that#After rewatching the video again I have half a mind to make gifs to keep track of his moves. I just really find it very amusing#I love how the move and what is happening in the rest of the video work with what we see him do in the actual game#Personality wise yes but strategically#I think I actually rambled about this in a post a few days ago? Yo! "The Lost Slayer" Buffy book series is crazy, in a good way. Buffy does something that causes an AU apocalyptic world to happen, that isn't unlike "The Wish," where Cordelia did something and caused an AU apocalyptic world to happen.
I read three out of the four books today. And granted, they're pretty short books. But still.
#Christopher Golden is so great#I don't know if I should mention what one of the main spoiler-y draws is or not#That I knew was coming right away. Because when I started reading Buffy books I just bought a box of a random assortment of them from e-bay#And the box had book three in this series and none of the rest (and I read the back of it) that tells you the main plot and probably the#biggest twist(?) so I don't know if I should share that here or let anyone who's interested find out for themselves

i've been a jane austen fan from a very young age but if people don't stop making pride and prejudice retellings i'm building a time machine, going back in time and physically stopping jane austen from ever writing it. i swear to god.
#there are MAYBE a handful that are good. MAYBE. but almost none of them capture the Spirit of the original#like i'm watching bridget jones' diary for the first time already knowing i wasn't going to like it but i'm bored and figured what the hell#and all of these article laud it the way they laud clueless of it being such a good modern adaptation except it ISN'T like.#clueless did such a good job in ways i can't explain. bridget jones' diary was like 'what if we cut all of lizzy's family (you know one of#the most important aspects of the book because of how tied they are to her story) and instead had her dealing with all of her issues on her#own. but that's not the POINT the POINT is that jane has entanglements with bingley which is a problem for darcy because the rest of her#family is so fucking nuts and jane is so shy that darcy thinks jane isn't good enough for bingley and the POINT is that kitty is enthralled#by wickham just like darcy's sister was and that's why he helps elizabeth's family and THAT'S what makes her change her opinion of him.#correction: not good enough just like. not as interested as he is in her#it's ALL tied to her family and if you remove her family from the equation elizabeth's character falls so flat bc her family is at the root#of half her fucking issues but also her relationship to jane is the thing that spurns her to make half of the decisions she makes i just#UGH! and it's not just this movie that does it. almost all modern retellings just completely write out the family as if it isn't central to#the story being told. it's so annoying. and don't get me STARTED on the dynamic between elizabeth and darcy i s2g#modern adaptation writers will be like 'this couple fights a lot. pride and prejudice retelling' and publish without a seconds hesitation#clueless is an emma adaptation btw. didn't mention it earlier bc i was fuming so it sounds like i'm saying its p&p it's not
