I think some people should be reminded that Riri Williams isn't 19 in the comics as she is now in the MCU. She's only but a teenaged child; she is 15.
Not only was this confirmed several times by editorial or the writer (see below), but her youth is relevant to a lot of her storyline. For starters, she's a part of the young Avengers mantle, with her peers being Miles Morales and Kamala Khan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of the Black Panther or Namor characters are, at the very least, supposed to skew early 20s (e.g., Shuri, who is clearly an adult in her 20s, especially if you review her older installments like Doomwar 2009 or Black Panther 2016).
Here are just some citations that confirm these ages verbatim:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a key reason why them using the team-name "shuriri" in Ironheart wasn't "canonizing" or coding the duo as a romantic pairing like some MCU fans presumed.
This is even ignoring the contextualization of their dynamic being that of sisterhood-general solidarity because maybe you can bend that: Shuri is an adult, Riri is a child. There's not a romantic connection between them here. They even squabble like siblings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know not everyone is a comic book reader, so I don't think most are using these panels or shipping their comic counterparts while knowing this glaring detail. Again, they probably just came from the MCU and decided to poke around in the comics.
They may not even know Riri is 15 and think she's an older teen (18-19), based on some interpretations of how she's drawn.
However, the fact still remains. The Marvel comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe shouldn't be conflated. Counterparts of characters aren't 1:1 the same. The MCU is not the comics, I can not articulate that enough.
When you treat them the exact same way, things like this happens.
It happens a lot.

The DoomWars
Tumblr media
Dr.Victor Von Doom had been a deposed monarch for several years, his throne usurped by none other than Dr.Victor Von Doom himself. Victor had woven scheme upon intricate scheme during his life, with only one of those plans going awry. His goal to live beyond his own death had worked too well.
The Latverian ruler had programmed one of his legion of Doombots to imprint his own memories and brain engrams onto his adopted son, Kristoff. When Dr.Doom was later presumed dead, the robot obeyed it's programming and Kristoff essentially became Dr.Doom.
Kristoff (referred to as Doom the 2nd) had inherited his father's arrogant pride, a serious flaw, and Doom II halted the memory transfer process before it was complete, this he gained only partial knowledge of his foes and the world around him. For example, Kristoff only had Victor’s early memories of Reed Richards and The Fantastic Four, plus his own more recent experiences. Once he had failed to destroy the Fantastic Four because he was literally unaware of The Invisible Woman’s force field ability. Doom II was captured and stripped of his armored metal exoskeleton by The Fantastic Four.
At the time, Doom was believed to be dead at the hands of Tyros the Terrible and the Silver Surfer, his body reduced to loose atoms during a clash between weilders of the power cosmic. In truth, Victor transferred his consciousness into a bystander’s body, and soon took steps to recreate his own form. After The Beyonder returned Doom to his rightful body, Victor soon attempted to use Franklin Richards’ reality-altering mutant abilities to free his mother's tortured soul from the nether realm of Mephisto. During Franklin’s kidnapping, Kristoff was able to escape confinement and also return to Latveria.
After Doom’s plans with his rival’s son dissolved, he found that Doom II had seized the reins of power in his homeland of Latveria. Victor Von Doom was forced out of his own country, an exiled leader foiled by his own plans. Since Doom II’s rise to power the two Dooms had clashed on numerous occassions. Both had used pawns and hirelings, and neither had much success. For the past year or so, the overt clashes between the two Dooms had reached a state of detente. However, both have been preparing for the next and potentially ‘final’ confrontation…

✧ Princess Shuri Comic Reading Guide! ✧
Tumblr media
The one and only Princess Shuri of Wakanda has long established herself as one of the most important players of the Black Panther franchise since her comic debut back in 2005. An heiress to the throne, a proficient warrior, and a genius to boot, Shuri is light-years away from being known as just "T'Challa's little sister". Can't get enough of her? Get to know her in the comics with this reading guide!
Tumblr media
please note: this doesn't detail every shuri appearance, but rather the ones i feel are must-reads for shuri stans with some fun ones thrown in as well! 💜
more in-depth discussion below:
1.) Black Panther (2005)
- Black Panther 2005 marks Shuri's debut and introduces us to her character, as well as setting the tone for her future appearances. I won't spoil it for those coming from the MCU and those who haven't read, but let's just say she's very different from her MCU self. Shuri appears in several issues, but to get the gist of her character, one only need read Issues #2-6.
2.) Black Panther (2009)
Tumblr media
- With T'Challa unavailable, Shuri dons the Black Panther mantle for the first time to protect Wakanda from threats. This twelve issue run details her journey as the BP, and is a must-read for Shuri stans. We're treated to several brutal yet epic Shuri fight scenes, as well as appearances from the likes of Storm, Doctor Doom, and (for the BPWF fans!) Namor.
Fun Fact: BP 2009 Issue #11 marks the first time Namor and Shuri fought. Thirteen years later, Wakanda Forever brought their beef to the big screen on Nov 11, aka, 11.11!
3.) Doomwar (2010)
- Shuri and the rest of the Wakandan Royal Family face off against one of Wakanda's biggest threats in Doctor Doom. Doomwar is hailed as one of Black Panther's more noteable runs, and Shuri in this arc is a fascinating character to say the least. Her ruthless and unhinged side is definitely unlocked during this story, and she is arguably at the worst we've seen of her yet. If you enjoy female rage, revenge, and more dramatic storylines, Doomwar is one you'll definitely enjoy.
4.) Klaws of the Panther (2010)
- Shuri travels to the Savage Lands and teams up with familiar faces as she works to finally take down Ulysses Klaw. This run really highlights the fact that Shuri's most dysfunctional flaw is her rage, and she learns that working around her worst trait is going to be as harrowing a battle as the one she's setting out on to protect Wakanda.
5.) The New Avengers, Time Runs Out, Infinity (2013)
- Though not center stage for this saga, Shuri is heavily featured in T'Challa's story and is Black Panther alongside him as well as reigning ruler of Wakanda. No spoilers, but let's just say this end only marks a new, exciting beginning for Shuri.
6.) Black Panther (2016)
- Wakanda's mystics and more spiritual side is explored in this run, with Shuri spearheading this specific field. She may or may not have new powers, as well as a new title (and a new hair color lol).
7.) Shuri (2018)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Finally, Shuri's solo run! This is Shuri's first solo without the Black Panther franchise attached to her name and her character has also been updated to be much more in line with her MCU self. This was truly written for her fans specifically, and we're treated to Shuri's endearing wit, epic action sequences, as well as team-ups with other fan favorites such as Tony Stark, Miles Morales, and Kamala Khan.
8.) Ironheart (2019)
- Shuri makes a guest appearance in Riri Williams' 2019 solo! Despite her appearance being fleeting, I had to include this because the way Shuri and Riri are juxtaposed and contrasted despite being so similar is so fascinating and allows a look into Shuri's more fascinating flawed side. Their friendship and also Riri finding another home in Wakanda is also incredibly heartwarming.
9.) X-Men X of Swords: Maurauders #13 (2019)
- Shuri's appearance is very fleeting here, but I thought it was worth including because she goes head to head against her ex-sister in law Storm in a tense yet amazing duel scene. For both Storm and Shuri stans alike!
10.) Black Panther (2021)
Heavily focuses on the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda, Shuri is heavily featured and gives you important knowledge you need to know before proceeding to Wakanda (2022)
11.) Wakanda (2022)
Tumblr media
- The Wakanda series focuses on the Black Panther characters without the titular Black Panther. Shuri's story explores how she protects her people even without the mantle. Explores the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda and has a nice, unique sci-fi feel.
SPECIAL MENTIONS:
• Shuri & T'Challa: Into the Heartlands by Roseanne A. Brown
Tumblr media
- If you can't get enough of Shuri and T'Challa's heartwarming sibling bond, do check out Into the Heartlands, a graphic novel for younger readers! It features a team-up in the brother-sister duo's childhood and a cute artstyle.
• Shuri: Black Panther Novels by Nic Stone
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- This Shuri solo by Nic Stone is not a comic run or a graphic novel, but rather a trilogy of novels with our favorite Princess taking center stage. It's for younger readers and adapts Shuri's MCU personality while going off of comic lore. Doesn't really add to the comics, but it's good fun and does provide us with our fill of Shuri content. Plus, she's absolutely adorable in these.
That's all for now, but make sure to always be on the lookout for more Shuri comic appearances! Rest assured I'll update should more content come out. Stream Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, available on Disney+! Thank you for checking this little compilation out and I hope it helps with your journey into getting to know everyone's favorite warrior Princess. Remember to keep showing Shuri all the support and love! Who knows, they might give us another solo run if we show we want more of her...👀💜

In honor of that stunning Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer drop. . . can you please send your favorite BP comic storylines? I need them to keep me company while waiting for the movie. 💞💞💞
Hey. I'm so excited for Back Panther: Wakanda Forever! Umm favourite storylines? I think you should read BP: Doomwar in the lead-up to the new movie.
Tumblr media
It will definitely set the scene for you (I hope - I've been speculating this arc for BP 2 for ages). At this point, it's the main story that I'll be recommending. Grab the TP and let it swallow you up.
And for something a little more lighthearted, Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda:
Tumblr media
It's fun, superhero team stuff.

Into the Anthill pt 44 - Avengers Academy
With Norman Osborn out of the way Steve Rogers was free to restructure the Avengers. We know Steve asked Hank to participate, but this is the first time the primary Avengers team was rebuilt without him. Hank instead set his sights on the next generation, opting to open Avengers Academy with several of his more "troubled allies." Who better to recruit as teachers than Magneto's son, Ultron's wife, and the guy who put iron spikes inside his costume to power himself up?
Flawless strategy as always, Hank. They don't call you one of the 8 smartest men on Earth for nothing.
🐜🐜🐜
Incredible Hulks vol 1 #607-610
M.O.D.O.K. and Leader planned to drain the cognitive function of Earth's greatest minds to ensure that no one could outsmart them again. With Reed Richards, Doctor Doom, Hank McCoy, and T'Challa already in their clutches and Tony Stark currently in a coma they targeted Hank. After a brief fight with Red She-Hulk in which Hank revealed that Bruce was secretly working with Red Hulk, Hank's mind was compromised and he was taken prisoner. Bruce gathered a team in the hopes of saving them but ultimately he failed, himself being added to the brain drain machine with the other captured geniuses.
Once freed from the machine and restored to their intelligence, Hank, Beast, Reed, and T'Challa worked with Bruce to destroy Leader's machines and restore their Hulkified allies to normal. The plan worked, but the only way to stop a catastrophic detonation of gamma energy was for Bruce to absorb it and become Hulk once more.
Avengers: The Origin vol 1 #1-5
A retelling of the Avengers' origin story that frames it in a more modern time period with newer characterizations and technology to support the plot. Janet did more than swoon this time, Rick Jones was a gun-toting hacker, Hank invented advanced mapping software using his ant-signals, and a lot of page space was devoted to Hulk making friends with a bearded lady. The final confrontation with Hulk took place in an underground weapons facility where Hank and Jan were able to trap Loki in a lead-lined explosives testing chamber. This time the idea to form the team was Janet's and Tony is the first one to call them Avengers. Hulk was also not invited to join, only making it onto the team because he showed up and insisted.
I get what they were going for but I really didn't vibe with this.
Avengers Academy vol 1 #1-2
On board with Steve Rogers's new Avengers rollout but not looking to serve on the main squad, Hank teamed up with Tigra, Justice, Speedball, Quicksilver, and Jocasta to staff Avengers Academy: a school dedicated to teaching the next generation of heroes. Their first class included Veil, Hazmat, Mettle, Striker, Finesse, and Reptil. While Hank intended to keep this from them, the teens quickly discovered that they were not chosen for this because of their heroic potential. They were selected because the heroes thought they'd go rogue.
Thunderbolts vol 2 #144
Tasked with finding reliable transportation for Luke Cage's Thunderbolts, Hank took this opportunity to partner Luke with Man-Thing. Ted's connection to the Nexus of All Realities allowed him to open portals to anywhere just like Hank's Pymspace doors. This would also keep the government from trying to kill Man-Thing again.
Minor/Cameo appearances from this period:
Hulk vol 2 #22
Doomwar vol 1 #6
Enter the Heroic Age vol 1 #1
Avengers vol 4 #1
Amazing Spider-Man Annual vol 1 #37
Invaders Now vol 1 #4
Iron Mas: Kiss and Kill vol 1 #1
Chaos War vol 1 #1
Age of Heroes vol 1 #4
Thunderbolts vol 2 #147

hi. doctor doom fan here with a question for you. i haven't really read any black panther comics, with one exception. doomwar. i'm just wondering how a black panther fan would feel about that being the basis for bp3.
i feel like it would make sense as a natural progression of the first two. in bp1, t'challa reveals the secrets of vibranium to the world. in bpwf, the rest of the world are searching for vibranium, i feel like a full-scale invasion of wakanda is a natural next step. furthermore, shuri trying to unlock the secrets of vibranium not only allows her to flex her scientific muscles that we saw in the first film, but also opens up the supernatural element that we know from bpwf shuri struggles with.
however, as i said, im a doctor doom fan, not a black panther fan (dont dislike bp comics, just haven't really read them), so i feel like my opinion is not only uninformed, but also inherently biased. im growing more and more worried about how they'll introduce doom to the mcu, and right now Ryan Coogler is the only person i trust to properly adapt the character, but i wouldn't want that to be at the expense of a better bp movie.
sorry about the overly long ask, i just wanted to get the perspective of a black panther fan.
hi! i'm so sorry i didn't reply sooner, i was ia on tumblr for awhile, i hope you'll forgive me 🥲. still, better late than never.
but this is a really great question, and i love speculating on where mcu bp's storyline is going to go myself, so here are my thoughts on this.
personally, i'm pretty certain bp3 will be after mcu secret wars, and will revolve around ta-nehisi coates's 2016 bp run. this makes a lot of sense considering shuri's our new main lead, and that run had some awesome developments for her character.
however, i could be wrong, and i honestly don't mind doomwar being included in a bp movie. it would make a lot of sense too, considering the story progression like you said. doomwar could be a really great challenge for shuri to face, and now that i think about it, it would be great for her to face some hurdles first as the new bp before transforming into the aja-adanna. overall, i don't think doomwar being the main inspo for a bp film would be so bad.
hope this answered your question! 💗
