Down syndrome (trisomy 21) is a genetic condition that happens when a child is born with an extra chromosome. Normally a person has 46 chromosomes but a person suffering from this condition has 47 chromosomes and this disrupts the way the body and mind function. Today 21/3 is chosen to represent the chromosomal defect found in Down Syndrome (triplication of the 21st chromosome) to raise public awareness and support the wellbeing of those living with Down syndrome. The doctor may recommend Down syndrome screening and/or diagnostic tests for pregnant women who are 35 years of age or older. The age of a mother is the main risk factor for having a baby with Down syndrome. The risk increases as a woman get older. But the baby may also be at higher risk if the mother already had a baby with Down syndrome and/or have a family history of the disorder. It’s always difficult when you’re told that something is wrong with your baby, especially if you’ve faced a painful decision about the future of your pregnancy. Your doctor will make sure you see the appropriate health professionals, such as a genetic counselor, to help you get all the information and support you need to make the right choice for you and your family.

Letter to my daughter. What down syndrome has taught me.

My sweet nugget

when we was told you had down syndrome I thought that my life was over. But you arrived at a critical time in my life. I cut ties whole family, and I was very alone. I was needy. I was depressed. I was full of worry. Pity. I was a martyr. A misery. I wasn't enjoying my life.

Today's society has taught me nothing about downs, and I honestly did not know what to expect.

Yet ,You have totally enriched my life. You completely changed me and our little family. We become stronger, closer.

I speak to people I'd never speak to because of you. I've made friends, I've learned to smile more. I've embraced my faith. I've allowed myself to be who I want to be. I go to church. I prey. And I don't feel that lonely gap that my family left anymore.

You have taught me to be unique. If I couldn't be unique myself or do things that I wanted to do and not what fits into society, how can I be a role model to you ?

You are just like any baby (I'm not going down the 'normal baby' route because you are normal ) but it's so wonderful all the mile stones you pass, make us so happy. You have turned into a bit of a drama queen and learned to pretend cry, you roll, laugh, smile, and your sisters totally adore you. I'm still not sure what society has taught me about down syndrome. As I'm always amazed at all the things you do.

I hope when you grow up, you do what ever you want to do. You push yourself to succeed at life and to be happy. I hope you laugh in the face of people that doubt you. And I hope you learn to never take life to seriously. I hope you always challenge yourself and others perception of DS. I hope us 4 girls will change everyones views on disabilities.

We my nuggets can change our world !
