revelations week day 5: no choice
"That can't be right, Jack," Mom hissed. "I mean, listen to what you're saying! We can't just give up!"
Dad's face was grim in the low, red emergency lights of the Specter Speeder.
"I don't know what you want me to say. If we want to get out of this, Phantom's the only one who can save us now." His laugh was bitter. "I mean, what ghost in their right mind would go out on a limb for their sworn enemy? It's hopeless."
Danny gulped. "Why's it have to be Phantom? Why not any of the other ghosts out there?"
"We had the Speeder keyed into Phantom's ecto-signature. It was supposed to be tracking him, but something in the code was scrambled when we crashed. How it happened is beyond me. It's less than one-in-a-millionth chance, but now the Speeder is refusing to unlock without Phantom's biometrics. Meaning we can't leave, and we can't start it up again."
"Can't we pry open the doors, though?"
Mom shook her head. "The doors are titanium and the locking mechanism is powered with a super magnet. It'd be no use."
"What about our biometrics? Aren't they programmed in too?"
Dad took off his glove again and pressed it down on the scanner.
The lights flashed and there was a high trilling alarm.
"They're all scrambled." He replaced his glove and the alarm stopped. "I tried reentering it manually, but Phantom's the only administrator the system recognizes. I'm not sure how long it will be until we run out of air, but chances are even if Phantom finds us in this corner of the Ghost Zone, he won't be able to enter the Specter Speeder because it's impenetrable for ghosts. He'd have to be on the inside."
Mom put a hand over her mouth. "No…"
"There's no way out of this one. I'm so sorry. I should've never—should've never brought us out here." Dad's eyes watered. "This is all my fault."
"No. It's not your fault," Mom said. "We all agreed to make this trip. This was nothing but a freak accident."
Danny jumped down from the stool he'd been sitting on. "Yeah, speaking of freak accidents—"
His parents turned to look at him, fear etched across their faces.
He walked across the Specter Speeder and pressed his thumb against the biometric scanner. Moments later, the engine roared to life.
"—there's a few things about mine I haven't told you about."
His parents' expressions were dumbstruck.
"How—?"
"I mean, of all the expeditions you could have roped me on you had to choose 'tracking down Phantom.' It was sort of funny at first, flying around in circles, but I guess it's sort of a fortunate thing that I was inside the Speeder instead of outside when we crashed?" He shrugged. "And to think I almost blew you off today and hung out with Sam and Tucker instead."
"Danny," his Mom's voice was low. "What did you do?"
"I unlocked the Speeder. I mean, all that business about suffocating to death didn't sound good."
"That shouldn't be possible," Dad said. "I mean, you're not Phantom."
"Sure. I'm not."
Mom sounded uncertain.
"... are you?"
He shrugged. "I mean, not on purpose. It sort of just happened?"
"Um." Dad looked uncomfortable. "What does that mean?"
"Look, if today's taught us anything it's that accidents happen, right? That's all it was. Just an accident." He lowered his voice. "Where I may or may not have turned the Ghost Portal on from the inside and died just enough to become a ghost but not enough for my body to shut down, so now I'm a walking philosophical problem walking the line of life and death and somehow—it's beyond me—got roped into teenage vigilantism."
Neither of his parents said anything for a good half-minute.
"I can't tell if you're joking or not," Mom said.
"Oh," he clapped. "I wish I was. But that's just my life. Half-life. You could say half-death too, but Jazz gets mad at me when I frame it like that because she says it's better to place the emphasis on the glass half-full approach." He shook his head. "I don't care which. So, are we getting out of here, or what?"
Dad's voice was hoarse. "Uh, alright. I—I can set coordinates for home."
"Cool." He leaned back onto his stool. "I wouldn't have told you like this if I had no other choice. Not ideal, I get it. But we're good, right?"
His parents stared as if they were seeing straight through him. He checked to make sure he hadn't turned invisible again and found that he was still quite visible.
Ah. That was the shock setting in.
"Mm. Looks like you still need time to process."
It was a good thing that the ride home was a long one, because they'd need it.

Phantom lay on his stomach, hovering a little over a foot off the ground, his cape draped across his back and hanging down on either side. His greatest opponent sat across from him, laughingly relating how her first day as a ghost hunter had involved catching two teens making out instead of catching a ghost.
Phantom snorted, saying absently, "That was just a fakeout-makeout. It had been Sam's idea."
Valerie inhaled a sharp breath and jerked her head up.
Phantom frowned as he looked at her wide eyes, tilting his head to the side in confusion. "What?"

DP Revelations 2022 Day 4 - Deliberate
Here’s a fic of mine that I think fits this theme tired quaranteens ch 6
5 times Danny tried to reveal his identity to his parents + 1 time he didn't use time travel to undo it. Formatted as a Choose Your Own Adventure fic.
(In order for the Fentons to adopt Dani, Danny decides to tell his parents about his half ghost identity. It goes about as well as you can expect.)
The fic is a (completed) multi chapter css styled epistolary / social media fic! The full fic is 7 chapters and 18,135 words.

Danny had no choice but to go to school today. He'd tried everything he could think of.
Unfortunately, he'd skipped school too many times in the past few months. With the number of absences he'd racked up, he was close to crossing the line into having to retake his freshmen year. Of course, he was still perfectly willing to stay home today, but this was important to mention.
Using invisibility to hide in his room didn't work—Jazz still had the Fenton Boo-merang. ...And the Fenton Fisher to tie him up with when he tried escaping to the park. She refused to listen to him at all, insisting that his education was more important.
Then, for some reason, Lancer turned on the school's new ghost shield right after Danny was inside. Usually, he would be able to pass right through it as a human, but today... well, it wasn't really working out.
He would've used his invisibility to hide inside the school until it was time to go home, except he couldn't get a moment alone. So far, none of his teachers would let him be excused to use the restroom, and he hasn't been able to duck into a broom closet or unoccupied restroom between classes. It was like there was something actively against him today.
His best friends were the only positive to the day. When Sam saw him just before first period, she handed him a pair of sunglasses. Then, partway through class, Tucker passed Danny his hat. In the hall before second period, Sam started giving away fake fangs to anyone who would take a pair, declaring it 'National Fake-Fangs Day'.
As Danny tiredly left the cafeteria's lunch line, with hat, sunglasses, and a lost-and-found long-sleeve shirt and pair of pants, he noticed Tucker selling elf-ear headbands, announcing that it was Vulcan Day.
Danny dropped his tray onto the table beside Tucker and put his head in his hands with a groan. "Now my ears are turning pointy, too?"
"No. I just happened to have all these Vulcan headbands, and thought I could make some cash." Then he shrugged, saying, "Besides, your ears might start growing points during next period."
Sam slapped Tucker as she sat down with her bagged lunch. "Danny, it'll be okay. We'll get through this."
"I hope so. Though, given the situation, 'going through things' could end up part of the problem."
Danny knew he should be back to normal by the next day, but it was this day he was worried about. If only he could've waited it out, rather than being in a school, surrounded by hundreds of people.
Fortunately, the last half of the school day went relatively well. (Besides the continual panic that his secret identity would get out any second.) The only other change that needed hiding was his legs turning into a ghostly tail and refusing to turn back. Another stop at the lost-and-found box gave him a long trench coat.
And a few comments about feeling really chilly today even stopped some of the stares.
Danny breathed a sigh of relief as the bell rang, announcing the end of the school day.
He'd actually made it through without anyone discovering his secret.
And the school's ghost shield switched off just as Danny got to the front doors, so he wouldn't need to wait another second to leave.
Or at least... he'd thought he could leave, until Dash grabbed him right outside the school.
Dash swung Danny up against the wall. "Hey, FenTrashbin, the closet wants its junk back."
"So... Are you implying I'm wearing stuff from a trashcan, or a closet? Because the mixed metaphors are a little confusing."
Dash made a face. "Shut up, Fenton." Then a grin came to his face as he wiggled his fingers in front of Danny's sunglasses. "Now, let's see what you're hiding under all this stuff. I'll bet it's a great big zit!"
Danny began to panic as Dash reached forward. "No wait— Dash!"
Just as Dash was about to reach the sunglasses, Danny's hold on his tangibility gave out, every real-world item he had on falling through him and clattering into a pile on the ground.
Danny's eyes widened—he was suddenly hovering before Dash in his jumpsuit.
Dash pulled his hand away—which had drifted through Danny's chest—and stumbled back a few steps, mouth dropping wide open. A tiny squeak came out.
"It's, uh, Dress Like Phantom Saturday?" Danny tried.
"Today's Wednesday! " Dash shrieked.
Dash brought his hands up, shaking, fingers clawed like he wanted to rip something apart. "It was you the whole time!" he shrieked. His face was sheet-white, his eyes wide. " With the window! And the mouse! And-and the ghost shoes! And my computer coming alive!" He continued to babble about different events. A lot of which took place while they'd worked together that one day, but also several other things that'd happened at different times.
Strangely enough, Danny's secret identity getting out no longer seemed like the end of the world.
Not in comparison to Dash having a complete meltdown in front of him.
It really put things into perspective.
Dash was having a much worse day than him.

Danny transformed with a stumble in the alley near the school, not even looking for possible bystanders, and ran as fast as he could. He was just so tired. He’d been up until dawn chasing both Technus and Desiree, along with all the appliances and wish-monsters that had been roaming the city.
He was so, so tired. His eyes ached, and his head felt staticy. He’d woken up late, and really needed to get to class on time, because one more tardy would mean a letter being sent to his parents.
He reached down to pat his pants, making sure he’d remembered to change out of his pajamas. He barely remembered to grab his backpack on the way out of his window. But he kept thinking there was something he was supposed to remember.
Something about today specifically…?
Or maybe he’d just forgotten his pencil. He could just ask Sam for one later.
He blinked, and the feel of closed eyelids felt so wonderful, he had to focus on making his eyes reopen before he could fall asleep on his feet. He saw double for a split-second, before the scenery in front of him lazily drifted back into focus. A large yawn followed, his eyes watering and mouth opening so wide that he was left with narrow, blurry slits of vision.
He slammed face-first into something as hard as a wall.
After a second or two, he started to tip backward. Not understanding what was going on, he just stared at the sky as he landed on his back.
That was when he noticed the laughter.
He could feel his face heating up as he pushed himself to his feet. Dash and a few of the other jocks were pointing his direction as they laughed and continued walking toward the front doors. And, of course, there was also Paulina among the crowd.
The other students walked around him—and right through the glowing green dome that now surrounded the school.
Ah. That was it. This was the day the school was supposed to switch on that new ghost shield his teachers had been talking about for the past week.
The laugher faded as the last of the students entered the school. Then the first bell rang.
He had to get to class!
He desperately pressed his palms against the shield.
He pushed hard against it, a strained whine escaping his clenched teeth. His tennis shoes started to slide, scrapping against the sidewalk beneath him.
He stopped, breathing heavily as he leaned his forehead against the shield, trying to figure out how to get to class.
He glanced at his bare hands, seeing that he was definitely Fenton at the moment, so that wasn't it.
Backing up a few feet, he craned his neck to see that the shield disappeared over the top of the school. He walked a few feet to the left, into the grass, before walking back to the right and doing the same on the other side of the sidewalk.
The front doors of the school opened, and Lancer walked out, and marched toward Danny.
“The Tell-Tale Heart! What are you doing?!”
“Um… Trying to get to class.”
It was kind of obvious, wasn’t it?
“You can explain your reasoning after school, in detention.” Lancer grabbed Danny’s arm and pulled him forward.
Danny again slammed into the ghost shield.
The laughter was back, though not as loud. Danny traced the sound to the school’s second-story windows.
He sighed.
Lancer turned and came back through the shield. He gestured toward Danny's backpack. “What do you have in this?” he asked, taking the backpack and setting it on the sidewalk. He tried pushing Danny through the shield, and again Danny was only pressed up against it.
“Empty your pockets.”
“I don’t have anything!” Danny insisted as he pulled his pockets inside out.
After fifteen more minutes, and Danny removing his shirt, and then his pants, the shield was temporarily taken down for him.
The next morning, Danny kept his head down as he walked toward the front doors with Sam and Tucker.
It took awhile to realize the hushed whispers following him weren't at his expense, but because everyone had come to the conclusion that he was Phantom at some point during the night.
At least the school decided against sending a letter to his parents.

It had been a few months since he'd had the accident which gave him ghost powers.
Every day, he worried about someone finding out, labeling him as a freak, not normal, inhuman. Afraid of his parents' reactions, afraid of his classmates' reactions, afraid of the strangers' on the street.
The stress was getting to him. He was beginning to take risks, doing impulsive things without thinking—transforming in plain sight, pulling his school books straight through his locker, slapping his hand onto the Fenton Finder. Just daring someone to discover his secret. To make the overwhelming suspense end and get it all over with.
He wasn't sure which was worse—someone discovering his secret, or him worrying about someone discovering it.
It couldn't go on like this. He couldn't keep it all to himself any longer, just him against the world. Not without doing something crazy and ending up dissected or worse. He had to tell someone. Anyone.
Just one person.
Maybe if just one person knew, if he had just one person's support, he would be able to keep it up. Continue on as both Danny Phantom and Danny Fenton.
It had to be someone he could trust. Someone who wouldn't tell anyone else. Someone who could help.
The day he asked to speak with her, he was jittery with nerves, practically shivering.
But then, when he told her, and transformed in front of her to prove it, her eyes lit up and a large grin stretched across her face. She thanked him for sharing this with her, looked genuinely happy that he had chosen to confide in her.
She wasn't afraid of him. She didn't think he was a freak.
Encouraged by her acceptance, he told her everything. From how scared and horrified he had been right after the accident, to how he thought he might should tell his parents but was too nervous they wouldn't accept him, to how alienated and worried he has felt at school.
And she was so, so understanding.
She hugged him and told him it would all be okay.
She thought it would be best for him to continue to avoid telling his parents, or anyone else for that matter—she believed he could be right about his fears; but she would be there for him. Always there to turn to whenever something came up.
It was strange, how relieved he felt every time he talked to her, but also, somehow, more miserable than before.
But she said that was normal; part of the healing process. And Danny knew it must be true. He trusted her, and she would never, ever steer him wrong. He would continue to speak to this understanding school therapist for the next three years, while he was at his very lowest. She was the only bright spot in his miserable life, and he was so thankful that he had decided to let someone in on his greatest secret.
