Video Essay Recommendations
Going to preface this by saying that, while I watch a lot of video essays, I do tend to go back to the same channels a lot because those are the people who change the way I think the most, so you’ll notice a lot of repeating names.
All video essays are on YouTube. List organized alphabetically.
AI Wars: How Corporations Hijacked Anti-AI Backlash by Alex Avila
incredible analysis on the nuance in the pro- or anti-AI debate
before watching this, i was of the firm belief that generative AI is bad, full stop, but he does a good job explaining a lot of misinformation in the anti-AI realm
one minor critique is that at times, he starts talking about analytic AI (which I support and supported before I watched the video) but he doesn’t outright state this, so it can be kind of hard to catch
astrology has a colonialism problem by Dr. Fatima
very interesting commentary on colonialism and the view of colonialism as a thing of the past vs an ongoing project
specifically interesting commentary on the colonialism of the Hawaii Islands
Conspiracy by Contrapoints
incredible insight into the modern political realm and how a lot of conspiracy theories have become mainstream
talks about how conspiricism works and how why people get so attached to their beliefs (she doesn’t specify it in the video, but I will say that this goes both ways)
The Cult in a Boarding School by Nexpo
one of those videos that just made me go “oh, so we live in a dystopia”
genuinely went to fact check some of this shit after because I was like “hey, this can’t be real” but here we are
Envy by Contrapoints
i don’t even know how to go about describing this video
it’s like a fever dream that makes you question everyone’s motivations but like, in a neutral way? like, not an “everyone’s out to get you” type mindset; more of “i think i understand things a little better than i thought i ever would” sort of way
Hamilton and the Death of the Obama Era by Alex Avila
I think this might be the video essay that I go back to rewatched the most
changed the way I think about political movements and how we enact meaningful change
How Conservatives Invented Gender Ideology by Alex Avila
interesting analysis on gender and society
Is there a crisis of masculinity or is it just capitalism? by Alex Avila
good analysis on the effects of capitalism and patriarchy on masculinity and men
very entry level analysis but still a good watch
"If you come away from this video feeling like you found the right person or group to blame, you’re doing it wrong. And if you’ve come away from this video feeling as if there are persons or groups who’ve done nothing wrong, then I haven’t done my job."
"If we’re going to be feminists who want to challenge the root of patriarchy, we don’t want to just target the way that power is distributed. We want to challenge the way we socially define power and the ideal citizen."
Twilight by ContraPoints
incredible analysis on human sexuality
"…lust is inherently perverted, and society’s role is to channel it into outlets that minimize violence. And those outlets may include novels, and movies, and erotica, and “problematic ships,” none of which are to blame for “perverting” sexuality."
Who’s Right About Pluto??? by Dr. Fatima
interesting view on how we have a hard time accepting scientific change because of our tendency to view science as an objective, unchanging way to view reality

she puts words & theory to so many things i've felt! especially the plurality of knowledge. and even the little science bro part of me that struggles to have faith in things. even though it sucks, i'm glad i'm not the only one❤️

I know it's a long one but it is worth your time! She weaves through the Palestinian struggle, the Hawaiian struggle, and the history and present role of universities as sites of active investment and maintenance of colonial projects so wonderfully. And so much more! It is genuinely a fantastic, informative, heartfelt, decolonial piece.

I just watched this video, and it really made me feel more reassured, even as it spurred me to action I am not yet ready to take. I'm getting my life in order and trying to do good, to be a good person and live a good life. It can be so hard to just be sometimes. There will be times when I must step up and take action. I'm young yet, so I think I can be excused in having a hard time with that part. Especially in America. Enough of my rambling. This is a good video. https://youtu.be/3NCSY85FqVQ

Dr. Fatima has a great video called "astronomy has a colonialism problem" discussing the telescope at Mauna Kea, Hawai'i.
It has an amazing section in the middle addressing various questions regarding Palestinian liberation and touches upon this argument too.
"I can't help but compare this "anti-science" characterization of Mauna Kea protectors to the unfortunately ubiquitous characterization of pro-Palestinian people as "anti-Semitic." In both cases a group is designating themselves the representatives of something as broad as science or Judaism, and saying that anyone who opposes their violence opposes the thing they say they represent, and only bad people would oppose that, right?... It doesn't matter who it's for, or what's the reason, they both just don't want their colonization to continue."
What is the best way to respond to someone who calls you antisemitic simply because you have this crazy notion that Palestine has the right to exist too?
I don’t hate Jewish people. I don’t even necessarily hate Israel or think it should cease to exist completely. I do think that the Israeli government needs to be held responsible for the decades of Palestinian oppression and should be required to give back stolen land. What happened last October was horrible and I condemn Hamas’s actions; but ultimately, I think the Israeli government is to blame.
I’m not sure there’s a “best” way because people can be generally unreasonable when discussing the topic regardless of how you approach it. Many equate antizionism with antisemitism which is not fair. You can criticize Israel, the state, and their Zionist campaign without being anti-Jewish.
Learning your history of the region is a key first step to talk with anyone about the topic. There’s a lot of “what came first, the chicken or the egg” controversy with the Palestinians and Jews and who is entitled to the land.

>oh look a new leftist youtuber who seems cool!
>checks their blog
>sees a video about "colonialism"
>asks them if they are talking about real colonialism or are just being antisemitic
>"what's the difference?"
>pulls out a chart explaining the difference between anti colonialism and antisemitism
>"it's a good video sir"
>look inside
>it's a 2 hour long rant about how (((they))) are in so many positions of power/are well respected for being good at their jobs and how that is allegedly bad because of palestine

really great vid about interpreting data, by Dr. Fatima 😁 i feel lucky to have had a decent Statistics class where i learned a lot of this, but Dr. Fatima puts it into words in a way they never did! plus: a great anecdote at the end about the curb cut effect of data accessibility.
this is also why STEM should be STEAM (A for Art). Art (creativity, design, music, etc) is so important in learning how to understand & communicate what we perceive!!

from earthseed by octavia butler.
thinking about this excerpt because of this very very good video essay by dr fatima, and the fucking epic reading of it by thedaintyfunk that precedes the essay.
if that video essay interests you, i also highly recommend this one. be prepared to get emotional at some point.
